Only 8-bit images supported?

I imported RAW files from my digital camera into Capture One (software for processing camera raw files which came with my digital camera). I made my adjustments then saved my results as a 16-bit TIFF. When I imported my TIFF into PSE 7.0, a number of the usual adjustments I like to use  - Filter->Correct Camera Distortion, Image->Transform, etc. were unavailable (grayed out). When I changed my image mode to 8 bits/channel, these options became available.
The advantage of using RAW files is to use the full word length from your camera - usually 12 or 14 bits for adjustments so as to get the best results. If I process my RAW file into a 16-bit TIFF and import it into PSE, if I have to go down to 8-bit resolution to work with the files, then I might as well be using jpg.I lose all the advantages of shooting raw.
Am I doing something wrong, or is this (still another) limitation of PSE 7?

Here's one example of dulplicating the background layer:
1. select the move tool
2. press the alt key and move the layer up a little.
   (you'll see in the layers palette you now have a duplicated layer)
3.  do a select all and use the align options Align Vertical Centers and Align Horizontal Centers to center the layer
4. deselect

  • Smart Sharpen taking forever to load after PS 2014.2 update with only 16 bit images?

    Hello,
    I am using Photoshop 2014.2.0 20140926.r.236 and I have attached the fill info on the current settings within Photoshop.
    I am using Nvidia Titan as video card and the problem occurs whenever I am trying to perform a custom sharpen Photoshop will not respond for several seconds up to 5-10 minutes.
    The issue does not occur if I am using the 8bit however it does under 16bits.
    I have attempted the following and managed to resolve the hang however it still needs several minutes to process the sharpen.
    - Fully checked my windows 8.1 pro;
    - Fully cleaned the PC for any temp files, invalid drivers;
    - Performed a full system check and repair on windows;
    - Checked for any drivers updates for video card, motherboard and BIOS, none available;
    - Uninstalled Photoshop and reinstalled it
    - Tried all of the different advanced graphics settings including having it off and only using cpu.
    - Put useable memory low in Photoshop preferences and back to default.
    - Uninstalled my virus protection and tested it
    Please if you can help me resolve this issue that would be great.

  • Does " IMAQ Match Pattern 2 " support 16-bit images?

    Hi,all
          When I used " IMAQ Match Pattern 2 " to process 16-bit images, it didn't work. I tried  the " Pattern Matching example"  and have changed the IMAQ Create's "image type" to 16bits.
    Is there any method to solve this problem?
         Many thanks!

    Hello dazee!
    "IMAQ Find Pattern 2" only supports 8bit images! You can find this in the help.

  • Does Elements 12 support 32 bit images in a 64 bit OS?

    Does Elements 12 support 32 bit images in a 64 bit OS?

    Yes.  It makes no difference how your image was created - on 64 bit
    software or 32 bit software.  It is still a document and so it should
    load on any system running any photo-editing software.
    PSE is still a 32 bit software for windows;  Nobody knows when will 64
    bit version come out.

  • How can I use IMGPLOT to display a 12-bit image in false color?

    I want to use IMGPLOT to display a 12-bit image in false color employing VC++ 7.0 . Actually it is stilla grey level. The only difference is to customize a new palette. I guess Ni should have a API for me change the palette. I donot want to convert my image into color image since its processing speed is slow.
    Any people has the silimar experience to do this?
    Thanks a lot in advance!
    zmt

    Hi Bruce Ammons,
    Thank you very much for your answer. I still need your clear instruction.
    I can directly display 12 bit image in 256 grey level just using IMGPLOT function without any mapping operation. That is because IMGPLOT directly supports to draw a 12 bit image through IMGPLOT_MONO_12 flag.
    IMGPLOT prototype is imgPlot(GUIHNDL window, void* buffer, uInt32 leftBufOffset, uInt32 topBufOffset, uInt32 xsize, uInt32 ysize, uInt32 xpos, uInt32 ypos, uInt32 flags=IMGPLOT_MONO_12 ).
    Hence I just need a C++ function to change the palette. I believe that IMGPLOT automatically does the 12bit to 8 bit mapping for me. What I need to do is just to change the palette. The question is which NI'S API can change the palette and work well with IMGPLOT. Or I have
    to use IMGPLOTDC and change the palette in the selected DC by myself.
    Your great help is much appreicated!

  • Why is IMAQ USB Snap.vi constantly giving out a 32-bit image?

    Hi.
    I'm using some USB cameras (uEye) with Direct Show. I use the IMAQ USB camera tools (with Labview 7.1, Vision 7.1.1) as in the examples. In particular I'm working in the snap mode.
    I create an U8 image (IMAQ Create) which I use as input to IMAQ USB Snap.vi and I set the camera's video mode to grayscale (Y8) using IMAQ USB PropertyPage.vi
    But, I don't get an 8-bit image out of IMAQ USB Snap.vi. The image is always converted to 32-bit RGB. In principal It works like this, but it costs me valuable time to convert the image to 8-bit at some points of the program where I need the image grayscale array.
    Cheers,
    mirola
    Labview 5.1 - 2011

    Hi Elmar,
    Thanks for answering.
    Of course, the "not officially supported" thing is a killer argument. But the device shall work with a laptop and, as I know, the firewire cameras need an additional power supply when connected to a laptop 1394.
    The camera I use is grayscale and only works properly when I write 8-bit grayscale in its settings (e.g. using IMAQ USB PropertyPage.vi).
    As I said, everything I can set is set to 8-bit. The Snap.vi converts the input IMAQ image to 32-bit.
    But maybe you are right and it's just that NI's USB Direct Show dll is not treated with high priority (note: I use the most recent one, although I combine it with older LV and Vision versions.) Otherwise I guess I would get more answers here.
    On the other hand, if I ask the manufacturer he will probably say I should use his SDK which I don't want at this point.
    Best regards,
    mirola

  • 16 bit to 12 bit image

    I have Labview 8.51 full developmental version and it does NOT have IMAQ arraytoimage.vi!
    Anyway I have a camera that captures 12 bit images but the card that supports the camera only outputs 16 bit. So I am getting 16 bit tiff files and I am trying to save it as 12 bit image. Is there any other way of doing this w/o using imaq arraytoimage.vi?

    Hello sl2obel2ts,
    Bad news: The NI-IMAQ VI ArrayToImage.vi is available only
    with the NI Vision Development Module (see the Vision Development Module help
    for a complete list of included VI’s).
    Good news: There is a way
    to convert 2D arrays to grayscale pictures without IMAQ VI’s.
    Take a look at the linked KnowledgeBase article, and let us
    know if it works for you. I hope this helps

  • Camera RAW image support for Pentax K100D

    Hi,
    Firstly, let me just say I have a MacBook Pro which came preloaded with Tiger. A month or so ago I upgraded to Leopard and I have applied all the available Apple software update.
    I recently got a Pentax K100D digital SLR camera capable of taking images in RAW format (the pentax saves these with a .PEF file extension) and I have been trying to view these images in Leopard. I read the article below, which says that Leopard provides system-level support for the Pentax K100D camera RAW format.
    *Digital camera RAW formats supported by Mac OS X 10.5*
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306835
    Now, my problem is that I cannot seem to be able to open the .PEF files with neither Quick Look, Preview, iPhoto or Aperture. Basically, none of these programs seem to be able to display my .PEF files. Aperture says 'unsupported image format'.
    I have installed the software that came with my Pentax (i.e. Pentax Photo Browser and Pentax Photo Laboratory) and these applications can display the .PEF images just fine. For what it's worth, I installed this software before I upgraded to Leopard.
    If I right-click on a .PEF file in Finder, the only programs listed in the Open context menu are the above two Pentax applications.
    So, what am I missing? Clearly something seems to be screwy in my Leopard set up. Is there some way to 'repair' the RAW image support in Leopard??
    I would appreciate any help in fixing this as I would really like to start working with RAW images in Aperture and iPhoto.
    Finally, just be aware that I am not an experienced Mac user. I have always used Windows until now and so... if you have a fix for this I would really appreciate a slightly more elaborate response.
    Thanks in advance,
    Eddie

    I have done a little more research on this...
    As it turns out, my camera is a Pentax K100D Super - not a K100D. The K100D Super is not listed as one of the supported camera RAW formats in the aforementioned article. So I guess this means that my camera is as yet unsupported. Sigh...

  • Using Labview to save image from PCO camera(12 bit images)

    Hello,
     I have labview 8.5 version in my Winxp. I have PCO camera (pixelfly). So far I know that it saves 12 bit images. I used normal save pattern of labviewas png,tiff or jpeg. As .pngit saves the images as 32 bit and as bmp it takes 8 bit images. But the picture quality is not good. I used IMAQ to take single picture and to save it I used IMAQ Write File 2. I used the following mechanism.
    1) IMAQ ImageTo Array--> To unsigned word integer--->IMAQ ArrayToImage--->IMAQ Write File 2---> save it as .png file.
    Please inform where I made the problem. Why the picture is not as like as 12 bit images of PCO Camera.
    Thanks,
    Stuttgart University,Germany.

    IMAQ Create.vi supports Grayscale(I16) and RGB (U64). Both should be suitable for 12Bit Greyscale.
    Documentation of "IMAG Write File 2.vi" says:
    IMAQ Write TIFF File 2
    Writes an image to a file in TIFF format.
    Note  16-bit monochrome images and 64-bit RGB images are nonstandard extensions of the TIFF standard. Most third-party applications cannot read 16-bit monochrome or 64-bit RGB TIFF files. For compatibility with most applications, write 16-bit monochrome images or 64-bit RGB images into PNG files.

  • Cant work with 32 bit image files?

    Hi there, I am unable to work with 32 bit image files on our cs6 ? I am fallowing a tutorial and a person creates a new file with 32 bit channel selected from dropdown menu, and starts painting on it he is using CS5. When I create a 32 bit file and select the brush tool, it comes on with circle and cross line and error comes up saying that the brush tool is not supported with 32 bit image files, in fact, I cant use any tools on the 32 bit images, I can't even create a new layer on the file. There is one thing I can do, which is a great feature, I can save it! But it's not much of a use now is it? If the image is plane white sheet. Is this a special feature that you need to purchase seperetly? Could you please advise. Regards

    Hello again,
    so resetting the preference file makes no difference to the problem.
    I checked 6 of our macs. 3 of the macs can create the 32 bit images and allow paint and other tools with no problem. Jet the other 3 macs have the same problem as I have. I checked my 2008 macbook which has CS5, and it can also edit 32 bit files. Checked my PC yesterdey which has CS6 installed, can't work with 32 bit image files.
    I find this very odd, some work and some don't. Any suggestions would be great. Please also find a screenshot of the mac with the issue.
    Kind regards,

  • Setting the fg/bg color of a 1 bit image

    Is there a simple way to set the foreground and background colors of a one bit image? What I need to do is draw a bitmap on a Canvas component where all black pixels in the loaded (gif) Image paint as my custom foreground color and all white pixels paint as my custom background color. I'm thinking maybe something like drawing a filled rectangle using the bitmap as a mask?? I am porting code from Windows, and this is something that is kind of built in to MFC.
    Currently I have this working in Windows running Java 1.4.0, but it wont work on a Macintosh running Java 1.1 (or 1.2?). I'm wondering if I stumbled upon a quirk that only works in Windows?
    This is the code from my Canvas object paint() method:
    g.drawImage(bitmapUp, 0, 0, getForeground(), this);
    g.setXORMode(getForeground());
    g.drawImage(bitmapUp, 0, 0, getBackground(), this);
    'bitmapUp' is a one color gif image with transparency. Basically anything that is not transparent gets filled with my foreground color. It seems like this is not the best way to go about things (even if it worked on all platforms).
    Test it here if you want:

  • How can I keep overlay image on 8 bit image at video acqusition?

    Hi, I am using AVT camera Pike with Laview vision 2012
    When I use Example code 'Grab and Attributes Setup.vi' (<NI supported Example),
    I simply add the event case for overlay function (such as 'IMAQ Overlay Oval') with Image  by Local Variables connection (image input - output).
    Event case:
                 Image------[IMAQ Overlay Oval]--------Image
                 Rectangle Control ---|
    IMAQ Overlay should keep the overlay on buffer memory if I input the rectangle value.
    Problem is that the overlay disappeared if I use 8 bit image format?.
    but at the 16bit image format, the image keep the overlay image (colored overlay).
    It seems the overlay buffer is removed by acquiring new 8 bit image, but 16 bit format, the overlay is still alive.
    Is it bug or what am I wrong?

  • How to convert color image(24 bit) YUV 4:2:2 to gray scale 8 bit image

    I am using sony DFW-X700 color camera for one of vision applications.Does NI Compact Vision System(CVS) support YUV 4:2:2 format(8 bit each).I want to do gray scale processing, so i need to convert the YUV color into gray scale (8-bit) in the software(like Labview). Please suggest us how to do this conversion for better gray scale image clarity from color.

    In YUV color space, Y represents the gray scale; in RGB color space, R=G=B represents gray scale. You can simply set R=G=B=Y, to convert YUV to RGB. If the original color depth is 24 bit, then the result is 24 bit too.
    You can create gray scale color table like this:
    array size = 256;
    [0] = 0x000000;
    [1] = 0x010101;
    [2] = 0x020202;
    [255] = 0xFFFFFF;
    To convert 24 bit gray scale to 8 bit, check every pixel in 24 bit image to find the array index according to the color table, and replace the pixel with array index.

  • Broken PICT image support

    My users and I have noticed that PICT images with alpha channels are not being displayed properly after the update to QuickTime 7.4. The images neither display properly in the Finder preview nor in Preview itself. For me, this involves PICT image display in an application which utilizes QuickTime for image/video. The same improper display has cropped up here.
    Unfortunately, I cannot use another image format as the source application uses PICT images stored in resources or .rsr files. Is there any way to lodge a formal bug report with Apple concerning this situation?
    Cannot confirm, but this may be limited to Intel-based Macs.
    Thanks,
    Robert

    Just coming back to close this support topic.
    Well, with the help of a developer friend I was able to circumvent the QuickTime crapola support in lieu of a custom PICT reader. Apple is getting sloppy - QuickTime/iTunes issues, no true 64-bit MacOSX, no 64-bit Windows support. If this doesn't hurt Apple's computer market, I don't know what could. Projection: in about three to five years, the number of 64-bit Windows computers will easily be 10 times more than MacOSX computers - unless Apple acts soon this will spell their reentrance into the niche market.
    Thank me very much,
    Robert
