Only adds music after 'Ipod Reset Utility' - No choice in what is selected

Hey all,
To add to the masses of problems.
On my second Shuffle 2gig (replaced first one because of this problem)
I can only add music to it after using the ipod reset utility.
When going back into iTunes it works fine, except for the fact I have no say in what goes on nor what order.
If I want to add or delete music afterwards I get the infamous "Cannot sync 'Ipods name' as required disc cannot be found"
I've tried everything on the forum, except for unplugging mouse as I don't have it plugged into a USB port.
I've tried the ipod on all ports available.
It's starting to get extremely tedious.

OK, did the SMU resets- more then once because the first time I plugged everything back in and the iPod reset didn't work; an additional time,with nothing but the iPod plugged in, it seems to have worked. I say seems because it's blinking orange and I'm worried about unmounting/disconnecting it to try to play it- the last time I thought I had fixed it, it was doing this...
Oh, and I'm running 1.0.3 software- thankfully,I had kept the old reset software...
I'm going to wait a bit and see if the blinking stops. Maybe it's just recharging, but I've barely played it, so it seems unlikely it needs much, if any charging.
Not to be looking a gift horse in the mouth, but since the first reset, including after the two subsequent resets, the fan has become noisy- isn't this supposed to stop a noisy fan, not make it noisy?

Not sure if this helps:-
The music files, were they bought from your iTunes account or did someone gift them to you after buying from the iTunes account? If they are yours you can download them again if you clear or de-authorise the ipod, it has to be done by whoever gave you the ipod to do this (the registered owner). If they were bought for you on another itunes account I don't think Apple let you use them as they are copyrighted and they don't belong to you, they belong to the person who bought them. If the music files where ripped from music cd's then click and drag them to a new folder on your desktop and have the person who gave you the ipod to de-authorise and unregister it. Then you re register it and put your files back from your desktop folder in your iTunes folder and synch. Hopefully that would work. Any files which you did not buy, I would not know how get around this, best bet is to take it to you nearest Apple Store and explain that they were gifted to you and ask how you can use them. The best way to gift music files is to buy the gift tokens and give these. Hope above helps.

After 5 R's and Ipod reset utility, what next?

Nothing has worked so far to make my 1-gen iPod operable. (It has worked fine in the past.) I get a blinking orange light when it is plugged in to a usb port.
It shows up in System Profiler but not in ITunes or on my desktop.
The iPod Reset Utility either crashes when I run it or tells me I have "two iPods" attached to my computer, and that I should remove one. I do not have two iPods attached to my computer.
Thoughts on next steps?

There are several different things to consider here:
a) Disk Utility will only see your iPS when and if it's present as a mounted volume. Yours isn't mounting, it won't be seen. The fact that it's seen in the Profiles really doesn't mean anything at all.
b) Disk Repair won't really do anything at all to a Shuffle.
c) Re-formatting should NOT be done in your case. The only case when it's ever called for is a few cases where Windoze users have inadvisedly followed their own OS prompts to 'help out' by formatting this new drive that's suddenly popped up on their system. Even in those cases the Reset Utility will do the same thing and, beyond that, we're back to (a) above: If your iPS can be seen by Finder and Disk Utility then it can also be seen by the Reset Utility.
d) You need to get to the stage where you can reliably open and use the iPod Shuffle Reset Utility. You might have to d/l a fresh copy of it, you might have to Repair Permissions, you might only have to log out to a Restart. What you DO have to do is to get it so that it will open and run.
e) Once you do that, you have to make sure that you're exactly, exactly, following the instructions for its use. Severe cases absolutely require that it be run from a clean, fresh system start with nothing else at all going on, that it be given enough time to work, and that more than one run might be required.

Ipod can not be synched even after the "Reset Utility" has been run

Mt second generation ipod was working fine for about two weeks and then it just stopped working. It won't charge, it won't synch, nothing. I ran the Reset Utility software downloaded from the Apple website and I get this error message "the ipod "name" cannot be synched. The disk could not be read or written to".
What can I do to remedy this problem?

IPod shuffle 2nd gen not recognized in Mac either Finder or iTunes (but is detected and works perfectly fine on Windows)... i tried using iPod Reset Utility, but no luck...

i've been working on this for the past few days, and still no luck... iPod Shuffle 2nd generation (i know it's old).... not detected in my home MacBook... but works perfectly fine on Windows....
i tried using iPod Reset Utility, soooo many times... and i only had twice the luck of having it formatted... but even though it is formatted, it still isn't recognized in iTunes or even in Finder.... other than the 2 times of having it formatted using iPod Reset Utility, i had seen all the reuslts, like: Error ressetting the ipod blah blah: iPod has been reset, keep plugged in, until reset is completed blah blah: iPod has been reset, unplug and replug your iPod blah blah... etc, i have seen all the possible effects of iPod Reset Utility, but still no luck getting it recognized in iTunes or Finder....
and then , i tried connecting it to a windows computer (but i didn't restore it from there, and just ejected it from windows iTunes), after ejecting it from windows, and then connecting it to Mac, it worked miraculuosly.... perfectly synced and able to put music and listen to them... ejected iPod... after a few minutes, i wanted to add some other music, but when i connected it again, Bam!!!! not working again... even after connecting to windows, it didn't work anymore... guess the magic trick has been doomed...

Hey, I hear ya and can sympathize. I have the same
issue. The difference is that my computer can "see"
my ipod but it refuses to show up in itunes itself;
therefore, I can't put anything on the ipod (from the
computer) and vice-versa. Apple support is clueless.
This is very frustrating to say the least. Itunes
keeps telling me that my ipod is synced to a
"different" computer, which isn't true. It's the
same computer. The difference is that when I first
got the 'pod and used it with this computer (and
everything worked fine), I was running XP. I
installed Vista and after that, all the problems
started. If I ever get this resolved, believe me,
I'll post something here.
I'm guessing that somehow, itunes "sees" what
computer it's hooked to by "looking" at something in
the OS. Change the OS and it "thinks" it's seeing a
"different" computer.
Try reformatting it.

Shuffle 2g and iPod Reset Utility

I recently was unable to get my Shuffle 2nd gen to connect to my Mac ( SnowLeopard ) and iTunes 9. It kept giving me an error.
Running through the Support section for the Shuffle 2g I came across a link for the "iPod Reset Utility" found here.
I downloaded and installed it. Connected my Shuffle ( note it would only work when connected directly to my Mini through one of the rear USB plug-ins ) it read and identified my Shuffle and I reset the unit.
All is working GREAT as of now. Installing music via iTunes.

IPod reset utility ( not compatible )

Pls help me with this... my operating system is windows vista, itunes cannot able to read my ipod, it said that i have to reset it with "ipod reset utility" but it is not compatible with my O.S.

well the only problem with that is that

I can't even run the installation program. I keep getting a message saying that "iPod Reset Utility requires that your computer is running Windows 2000 or Windows XP".

**iPod Reset Utility 1.0 is not supported for use with Windows Vista.
That said, some have had success, in using iTunes with Vista.
However, this article lists some important information on that configuration:

And you may be able to use iTunes to setup your iPod. Have you tried that?

Ipod reset utility

My iPod Shuffle (2nd Gen) needs a reset. iTunes won't recognize it and gives me: "iTunes cannot recognize this iPod at this time. You must restore the iPod with iPod reset utility before it can be used with iTunes." So I downloaded the installer for the iPod reset utility and ran it, only to discover that the installer is for 32bit operating systems, and I am running 64bit Vista. Anyone know of a 64bit iPod reset utility? Or am I S.O.L.?

Ok, so I just re-read the literature for the iPod reset utility and noticed this: "**iPod Reset Utility is not supported for use with Windows Vista." So maybe it doesn't matter if I'm running 32 or 64 bit...I'm operating Vista so I guess there's no way to reset my shuffle, unless I can find a friend who still runs Win XP. I'm open to any other suggestions though...

Can only add music with Autofill from Library (not working with playlists)

I can only add music using the Autofill feature and it will only work when the main music library is selected. Autofill does not work when a playlist is selected and I can not add music directly by dragging songs from a library or playlist as described in the owner's manual.
Is there something wrong with iTunes, the iPod or is this user error?

You're right it's the same for me.
I don't know as you mentionned whether it is an user error or not but I've got 2 iPods now, one is 60 Go color display (60Go) and the other received yesterday is 2G iPod Shuffle (Clipod). I can't drag songs from 60Go nor to iTunes Library neither to Clipod Music. The autofill function works only from iTunes Library where I've got 5 songs only (new MacPro), somebody knows how to export 60Go music to iTunes Library ?

HT1238 Is there a version of the iPod Reset Utility for 64-bit Windows?

Is there a version of the iPod Reset Utility for 64-bit Windows? The only 1 I could find says it only works on 32-bit. I tried the compatibility utility, but still no joy!

I recently reset my Ipod Shuffle 2nd gen to factory defaults and now it is not being recognized in Itunes. I currently have Windows 8 and no capability to get a 32-bit version of windows. What are my options for making my 2nd gen Shuffle to work?

Cant run ipod reset utility

I have been having some issue with my new first generation ipod shuffle; i was advised to reset it but it has continually failed. i have gone through the whole updating software, trying different usb ports, reinstalling itunes, restarting computer, etc and nothing is working. i am trying to use the ipod reset utility for my version but i cant even run the program i get an error message saying i need a 32 bit version of windows. i have windows 7 the most updated version currently so i dont really know what thats about. the ipod is new to me but its an old, used version so the warranty is most certaintly up; in short i have no clue where to go from here.

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .
