Only Black Ink, Please!

Officejet 6700 Premium and Windows 7. Keeps using color ink even tho Grayscale is set to Black Ink Only and Print All Text as Black is set to Enable. What's wrong? How can I fix it?

So explain this new development to me: I was in the middle of a new print job just a few minutes ago and the yellow cartridge became depleted. A message appeared on the printer's screen saying that an cartridge was depleted but gave me the option of pressing "OK" if I wanted to print in black only. Given the previous explanation about it being impossible for the printer to print in black only, this is a little mind boggling. For the record, I did select "OK" and the pages came right out of the printer without any hesitation without any need for yellow.

  • Make Sure Only Black Ink is Used?

Hello folks, first time posting here so bear with me.
Just bought a Laserjet Pro 400 M451nw and am using it on a Mac with Yosemite (even though the driver I installed said it was for Mavericks, it installed ok and is up and running though), my question is how to ensure only black ink is used even if there's some colour on the page I want to print? I hardly ever need colour so want to keep it's usage down to a minimum.
I'm connected through WiFi, any help would be much appreciated.
    Thank you.

The PSC 750 requires both cartridges to be present, you will need a color 78 cartridge to be installed.  The printer will work with an empty color cartridge but it must be installed and electrically sound.

  • C5380 - I want to print using ONLY black ink cartridge. Is this possible?

    Hi Folks,
I now understand that this model, HP C5380 and I'm guessing many others too, are programed to use an amount of colour ink even when selected to print in Black.
My question is:  Can I somehow program the printer to 'only print using the black ink cartridge' and not use the colour cartridges at all?
I have heard that this is possible with some models but need the specifics.
I am even willing to permanently disable the colour function if needed. The replacement ink catridges are so very expensive, if I'm unable to do this then I'll be looking for another printer and it won't be HP.  Thi is unfortunate because I think they make a good quality product - however they need to be on notice that their customers 'good will' and return business will not be forthcoming when they (and other compaines) continue to use money making strategies like this.
Many Thanks in advance for your time, B

  • Printing with only black ink

when i bought the hp 8600 officejet pro plus,  i was toil that you didnt have to replace the empty color catridges to print in black ink only.  i have jsut found out that is not true.  is there a way to make printer print without replacing collor cartridges?

Most likely the confusion is caused because the Office Depot sales person and the bushiness associate did not distinguish between the different kinds of printers.
There are generally a few different technologies used for inkjet printers - those like the Deskjet 6940 that have printheads and ink supplies integrated together are called Integrated Print Head (IPH) printers.
Another style has separate individual ink supplies and printheads.  This style has printheads that may be permanent and non-replaceable, or they may be replaceable after some number of ink supplies.  These are called Individual Ink Cartridge (IIC) printers.   An Examples are the Photosmart C7280, which has permanent non-replaceable printheads and the Officejet 8600 and 6700 which have replaceable printheads.
Most IPH printers will happily print with one (or even both) cartridges low on ink or empty.  Recent models will often allow printing even if one of the cartridges is removed completely, switching automatically to "reserve mode" or "ink backup mode".
IIC printers have long life printheads and generally have plumbing to connect the ink supplies to the printheads.  These printers (whether from HP or other manufacturers) generally require ink available in all colors to prevent air bubbles in the plumbing ar printhead.  Some ink is also required to keep the nozzles from clogging.  Even in the case of printing black only the color printheads are waving around in the air and may dry out.  Some ink is required to keep the printhead from drying out.
The document here has some information on how ink is used.

  • Deskjet 3070A - Why can't I print only black ink?! (Wastes so much ink/money!)

Hello. I have already posted this in another forum and the conclusion was to post it again here. The full post and replies are here. http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Ink-Toner-Cartridge-Printhead-Issues/Deskjet-3070A-Why-can-t-I-print-on... (will open in new window)
Basically, printing in black only seems to use almost as much color ink, forcing me to buy ALL the cartridges when I need only black. I understand that some color ink is used to keep the heads clean, but seems that quite a lot is used. I print "black only" but maybe Im not doing something right in the print setup or maybe this is a known issue. In any event, it is way too expensive to buy all cartridges and will have to scrap this printer if I cant fix it. Hope there is a solution.
    Best,
    R

    Hi rdbot,
To setup black ink only I would recommend the following:
    Open TextEdit.
    Click on File, then Print.
    Select the printer.
Then next to presets, select Show Presets (it will be in a drop-down menu).
Look for Color/Quality and select it.
Then you can find options for black and white only.
You can see this guide, OS X Yosemite: Save your print settings to use later, as an example.
I noticed that there is not any full feature software and drivers for this printer for Mac OS X. So you will need to use the built-in driver through Apple. I would make sure all your Apple updates have been completed. Update OS X and App Store apps on your Mac.
If that still does not work, I would also recommend, resetting the print system, and then verify and repair disk permissions.
If you need to download the driver manually, you can find it at this website, HP Printer Drivers v3.0 for OS X.
Hope this clears things up for you, and have a wonderful day!

  • How do I setup my printer to print with only black ink in a pages document

How do I setup a document to use black ink only in Pages?

This is a Printer setting, rather than a Document one.
For my Canon Inkjet, it's done in the Print Dialogue:
As you can see from the second pop-up menu, I have saved this setting as a preset.
The setting itself has only a single change from the supplied "Standard" setting—checking the Grayscale Printing checkbox.
Going by appearances, the printer uses only the Black cartridge when printing in this mode, unless I have set "Use color cartridge" in the printer's utility software, a setting intended to allow you to print using only one cartridge when the other is out of ink. Greyscale printing using only the colour cartridge has less contrast, and usually shows a colour cast. Setting the printer utility to specify using only the K cartridge shows results essentially the same as those done in grayscale using the Print dialogue setting and not bothering to change the printer utility setting.

  • My mx452 is out of color ink. How can I print with the MX452 using only black ink?

    Hi
    I have the MX452.
I only use it now to print in black and white.
But I cannot get it to print despite a new b&w cartridge.
Do i have to buy a new color print cartridge or can I overide the error code "Check Color Ink 1688"  ??
I dont want to spend $30 on a color cartridge that I will not use.

  • In the C309, How can I use just the regular black ink cartridge only?

    Hi
I just bought a HP C-309 a short time ago.  I bought a HP reg black cartridge XL quite quickly.  This thing is a sweet
machine, works perfectly, but is a terrible terrible ink hog.
Had I known, I would have gone for the Kodak which touts much lower ink costs.
I only use this thing for documents.  I do not want to keep putting color cartridges in.  They are all on low except for the black XL cartridge.  How can I set it up to use only this cartridge for black and white..and just leave the color ones on empty.
I will have to get rid of it if I have to keep feeding it this way.  The ink levels seem always low.  By the way, the help asks me for model number.  They want to know whether it is 309n or 309g.  I see no way to find out..no notations on machine or purchase documents.  HP, if  you need this info...make it easy for the consumer to FIND the info...gheesh!

    Hi   lyn1360
There are several circumstances when color ink may be used—primarily to improve print quality, and sometimes to improve printer reliability—even if the document appears to be only black text-and-graphics. Many HP printers utilize chemical interactions to improve the quality and permanence of plain paper black text-and-graphics by adding small amounts of color ink to certain black areas. Some dark images which look black to human eye may contain a combination of black and color inks. For black and white images and photos or grey black which we think as black, a blend of colors called "composite black" may be used to achieve significantly better image quality and smoother gray tones than can be accomplished with black inks alone. Some inkjet printers utilize pigmented black ink, which is incompatible with some inkjet photo paper. In this case, dark or black areas are made up of color inks.
For users who wish to print utilizing just black ink (despite the reduced print quality), many HP printers offer options. For example, a driver color setting (by selecting "print in grayscale with the black cartridge only" in printing preferences) specifies printing using only black ink. In addition, many IPH printers can operate in "reserve mode," which allows the user to continue to print with just the black cartridge when the color cartridge is removed or not installed. In HP IIC systems like your printer C309, all supplies are required to be installed in the printer for the printer to function.
To find the correct model number for your printer, you can just open the carriage access door and on the right side you can see the model number. For OJ Pro printers, we need to open the cartridge access door on the front left side to see the model number.

  • I can not print black and white only documents and I have a full black ink cartridge

I have been an loyal HP customer since the orginal laserjet in the early 90s and then many inkjets from HP after that.
I bought an HP 6600 All in one for the house and have only ever printed in black and white.
For some reason one of the color ink carts is empty after a few months of black and white only printing.   No problem - I only print in black and white - or so I thought.
Nothing I have been able to do (aside from buying a color cart I don't need) is able to tell the printer to not worry about color and only use the black and white cart.  Past inkjets from HP didn't have a problem with this.
Please tell me HP didn't do this on purpose and is going to trying and justify the need for me to buy any color carts if I never print in color.  HP - if you did and you are going to try and tell me you neeeded to do this for any reason then someone please sign me up for the class action lawsuit if you are an attorney looking for plaintiffs.
However, I am sure I am overlooking some simple setting on the 6600 to move past this annoyance.
    Thanks!

    Hi Atlanta90210,
We appreciate your brand loyalty, and I'm very sorry for the frustration this has caused.
There is a lot of good information in Cannot Print When One of the HP Ink Cartridges is Empty. It explains how your printer works and how it is designed. Another good resource is posted here.
In the first link I mentioned, there are steps to print with black ink only. I have a similar printer to this at home (with the same print mech), and I have found that the steps to print with black ink only have saved me lots of ink.
There needs to be ink in all the cartridges for this printer to continue printing (after the cartridge's reserve mode is depleted). Once you have replaced the empty cartridges, you can change the print settings to print with only black ink so the printer doesn't use color ink. Until then, there is not a way to bypass this.
I know this is not the answer you were hoping to receive, but I do hope it was helpful.
I'd be happy to help you with any other questions or concerns.

  • How to get my C309a printer to only use black ink cartridge?.

I have changed my ink cartridges 3 times.  ALL of them.   I haven't had the printer for that long.  I only print TEXT so only BLACK INK. And not that much of it either.  SO why does all of the cartridges get used up?  I cannot find anything where you can adjust or fix this problem.  HELP as I don't have the money to keep buying all this ink.

The Photosmart c309a does allow printing in black if a color ink is depleted - I have one here.  What is your printer model?
HP and other printer manufacturers have different printer technologies for different needs.
Some have printheads built into the ink cartridges.  These printers can typically print with one or more of the colors completely empty, or even with color or black (but not both) cartridges removed. The Deskjet 6980 series is an example.
Other printers have separate ink supplies and replaceable printheads.  An example would be the Officejet 6500 printers.  The printhead in these printers can be replaced if they are damaged by running the printhead with colors out.  Some of these printers will allow printing with a color out, other will not.  If the printer is run without ink in one or more colors the printer may be damaged, but the user may be able to recover without having to send the printer for service.
Other printers have permanent printheads.  To run these without some ink in all the colors would risk causing damage to the printhead due to clogs, air ingested in the printheadvor burned out printhead firing resistors. The Photosmart 3310 series is an example of this type of printer. For printers with fixed printheads this could require service to get the printer to print properly again when the ink is finally replaced.
The document here has information on how ink is used.

  • Only want to use Black ink, not color

I have used all pro 8500 with black ink only. other colors are empty . I dont want to print with color and only Black ink needed. black ink is full but still calling out needs ink fill

The Officejet 8500 has separate ink supplies and printheads.  When printing (even in black only) the color portions of the printhead are waving around in the air and would dry out and clog if no color ink was available.  For this printer you will need to replace the color ink to allow printing.
HP and other printer manufacturers have different printer technologies for different needs.  For inkjet printers:
Some have printheads built into the ink cartridges.  These printers can typically print with one or more of the colors completely empty, or even with color or black (but not both) cartridges removed. The Officejet 8040a is an example.
Other printers have separate ink supplies and replaceable printheads.  An example would be the Officejet 8500 printer.
To run these without some ink in all the colors would risk causing damage to the printhead due to clogs, air ingested in the printhead or burned out printhead firing resistors. The Officejet 6700 is an example of this type of printer. For printers with fixed printheads this could require service to get the printer to print properly again when the ink is finally replaced.
The document here describes how ink is used.  While the document is written for HP Inkjet printers the same principles apply to inkjet printers from other manufacturers.
If you never print in color a laser printer would likely be a better choice.  If you occasionally print color but mostly black an IPH printer like those in the first category above may be a good choice.

  • HP Officejet 6700 Premium, Won't print in black ink only

Hello I have a officejet 6700 premium and im running windows 7 home. I recently ran out of the color cartridge yellow but i cannot afford to replace it right now and would like to know if there is a way to print only in black when my color cartridges are depleted. I tried selecting 'only black ink' under setting but when I tried to print it said i must replace the yellow cartridge before I can resume printing. Please help!

The Officejet 6700 premium has separate printheads and ink supplies, with plumbing to connect them.  If one of the colors has run out completely printing will be blocked as ink is needed to keep the printhead from clogging.  While printing even black only the printhead would be waving around in the air and the color portion of the printhead could become clogged if there were not sufficient ink available for servicing.  Sorry, but you will need to replace the color cartridge.
The document here decribes how ink is used in HP (and other) inkjet printers.  In the language of that document the Officeejt 6700 is an IIC printer.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 - Now won't print in Black Ink Only!

Hi! After previously owning the Hp Officejet 8500a pro and experiencing numerous issues related to the 'Black Only' printing! We then decided to scrap the HP Officejet 8500a and move on to a new printer! We did a LOT of research into the new printer and at the time of purchasing the 8600 around August 2012 last year, we found no online content of similar issues relating to the 8500.  We even contacted Live HP support to check if the 8600 would print in Black Ink Only with the colours cartridges levels at empty. The HP live chat representative informed us the printer WOULD indeed print in black only with all COLOUR cartridges installed and empty. Since we bought the new 8600, we have replaced just the Black setup cartridge with a Genuine HP Black 950xl. A few days ago all colours where at about 10% levels, apart from the yellow which then ran empty. We have been printing in Black Ink Only with the following message appearing, since the yellow ran out: "Yellow Cartridge out of ink, click continue to print in Black Ink only" As of this morning, the below message appeared with no option to print ink black only! "Depleted cartridges must be replaced to resume printing" The Yellow and now Magenta where out of ink, with no option but to purchase both cartridges, we replaced them and ran off 8 order sheets in Black Ink Only.  Both cartridges where replaced with Genuine HP. Directly after printing these 8 pages, the current Ink Levels are now: Magenta - 100% fullCyan - Has now ran out with a Red X (Annoying!!!)Yellow - Is showing a 10% Ink level with a brand new cartridge installed!!!Black - 40% full 1. Why am I no longer able to print in Black Ink Only with the empty colour cartridges installed?2. Why is the Yellow showing 10% full with a brand new ink cartridge installed full of ink? Does anyone have any advice on how to resolve this, I would very much appreciate some imput. Kind RegardsKev Challis

I know it won't print without a cartrige. I was trying to explain that this "problem" is one that needs to be prepared for in advance by not having empty cartriges installed. I am not trying to find a way around the way the printer is made to function. My printer came with the color cartriges that I plan on having for a long time because I rarely need to print anything in color. The link Jason posted clearly states that this printer, being a IIC, needs all cartriges installed in order for it to print. Here is the section:  For example, a driver color setting (by selecting "print in grayscale with the black cartridge only" in printing preferences) specifies printing using only black ink. In addition, many IPH printers can operate in "reserve mode," which allows the user to continue to print with just the black cartridge when the color cartridge is removed or not installed. In HP IIC systems, all supplies are required to be installed in the printer for the printer to function. (empahsis mine) Why it needs all supplies installed to function? I don't know and don't care. Why does it not print with empty color cartriges installed (the first question of the person that started this thread)? I don't know and it doesn't really matter. Have one set of color cartriges on reserve in case one of the ones you have runs out of ink. Don't want to hassle with this "problem"? Own another printer that is not an IIC inkjet printer.
