Only get 3.5Mbps internet over airport, should get 7Mbps

I have a 600mhz G3 slotloading iMac with the original airport card. When we got a cable modem a few months ago I got an airport extreme base station to network. My wife and daughters powerbooks can't hold the signal and my iMac only connects at 3.5 Mbps according to download tests at the cable company. My wife's powerbook (now connected to base station with ethernet cable) tested at 6.99 Mbps. The iMac gets 7 Mbps when wired.
What's up with airport?
Things tried: Move base station; Change channels; Reinstall older extensions; Wear hat made of alluminium foil...
Are there any other suggestions out there?

Hello R.W.R.,
Welcome to the Apple Discussions!!!
Wear hat made of alluminium foil...
Wrong hat. It must be made of stainless for this to work (I use my wife's collander, the holes match the ones in my head).
Do you have any cordless 2.4 MHz phones?
In my particular case, my Airport signal is weaker due to having lathe and plaster walls in a brick house for my Powerbook (the Mini is near to the AEBS so I get full signal for it, the PB only gets about 50% signal in the next room).
Have you tried power cycling the cable modem (remember to wear the right hat)?
Are you running OS 10.4.8 or 10.3.7 (change in your specs)?

  • IMac G5 isight Can No longer connect to internet over Airport

I have an iMac G5 that has been working fine on my Airport Extreme wireless network for 3 years. Suddenly, I can no longer access the internet over my Airport connection. The computer is on my local Airport network wirelessly (I can access it from my laptop and share files). I can connect to the internet from 4 other computers connected to the same wireless Airport network (2 MacBook Pro's, 1 Powermac G4). In addition, if I connect my iMac to my laptop via a twisted pair ethernet cable and turn on internet sharing on my laptop, my iMac can connect to the internet. All systems are running 10.5.5 and no firewalls in place. I checked my internet preferences and they have not been changed from what they were before when it was working. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEA WHY SUDDENLY IT STOPPED CONNECTING TO THE INTERNET OVER MY WIRELESS AIRPORT CONNECTION?

I have just experienced the same situation. Everything was working fine and now I can't connect to my airport from my macbook pro. I also have an iMac G5 working perfectly well on the same airport.
Could it be a latest update that has caused the problem?

  • Extremely slow Internet over Airport, good speed with Ethernet

I've been using an airport extreme router (802.11n) for a while and recently I've noticed an incredible slow Internet over wifi. When I do a speed test it shows numbers like 200 kbps and I have a 10 mbps cable Internet connection. When I connect the ethernet from the modem it's perfect speed. Obviously Airport is slowing down my Internet connection. I tried resetting the Airport by pressing the reset button at the back, and it worked perfectly for a while. But after a few days it got back to slow Internet. Anybody have any idea?

I don't know if this will help anyone else, but I came across some changes (purely by experimentation) that may help. I hope so, at least...
I opened the Airport Utility and I swapped channels. The default is channel 6, but every other WiFi router defaults to this channel, too. I changed my Airport Extreme to use channel 3 (as well as my Airport Express), and now things are back to what I would have expected for an 802.11g connection.
I will offer the suggestion that those of you with the same Internet slow-down observed on their iMac G5's try swapping channels. If you have an expanded WiFi home network vis-a-vis an Airport Express, be sure to update it first before you update your Airport Extreme.
    Best wishes and good luck!

  • Problems sharing internet over Airport extreme

I have a PowerBook G4 (OS 10.4.11) with a USB wireless broadband modem connected to the internet. I bought each of my daughters a MacBook (OS 10.5), and the idea was for me to have my laptop connected to the internet, then use internet sharing via my airport extreme card so that the girls could access the internet from my connection across airport.
I have no problem using my wireless broadband to connect to the internet. I have no problem firing up my airport extreme and creating the network, and I have no problem creating the internet share. I all seems to be working at my end. On the girls MacBooks, we have no problem firing up airport and connecting to the airport network I created. However, when we fire up safari, all we get it "you are not connected to the internet".
    I'm lost. Any ideas?

cdelahoy, Welcome to the discussion area!
On your PowerBook G4 do you have the firewall enabled? If so, try go to System Preferences-> Sharing preference pane and enabling Personal Web Sharing. That should open the ports needed to give Internet access to the MacBooks.
If that doesn't work, try disabling the firewall on the PowerBook G4.

  • Can't share internet over airport anymore

    I’ve got DSL hardwired to a G5.
It has an airport that used to share my internet connection wirelessly to several laptops.
The other day, I restarted the tower, and I was unable to reconnect to the web from the laptops.
The little airport icon with the antenna/up arrow doesn't show up anymore.
I can use the airport on the tower – the card still seems to work so that’s not it. Something in my G5 system (10.4.6) won’t allow internet sharing to airports anymore.
    HELP
    Eric

Have you gone to system preferences -->sharing-->internet
check to see if it is switched on.

  • Sharing Cable Internet over Airport

I'm working on some computers for a friend.
An iBook (dual USB) and a Dell Latitude D600 with the Intel Centrino.
THey have a Snow ABS (dual Ethernet). I don't know what kind of cable modem they have, but i'm assuming that it outputs to Ethernet.
How would I set up the ABS so that it would be a passthrough to distribute the internet wirelessly?

Connect the Ethernet cable from the cable modem to the ABS's WAN port.
Configure the ABS so that it distributes IP addresses.
Configure the iBook and Dell so that they use DHCP to get an IP address.

  • Periodic iChat audio dropouts over Airport on Intel iMac

When chatting with iChat, an audio dropout occurs exactly every 5 minutes on my new Intel iMac. iChat's Connection Doctor shows total loss of receive audio signal quality (and a halving of the receive bit rate) for about 5-10 seconds. Then normal operation resumes for 5 minutes and the problem repeats. This only occurs while using iChat over Airport. I can also force this audio dropout behavior at any time by clicking on the Airport status icon on the menubar. I wonder if others are having this problem or is this an isolated problem with my computer?
It took me a while to recognize that this wasn't a network problem causing occasional audio dropouts. My wireless D-Link router isn't the culprit as my G4 iMac and G3 laptop don't exhibit the problem through the router. Also, when connecting from the Intel iMac to any of the other nearby Macs using a computer to computer Bonjour wireless connection (thus eliminating the router) the dropouts do occur. After connecting, the dropout always occurs at a random time between 0 and 5 minutes but thereafter it occurs at exactly 5 minute intervals. If I click on the Airport status icon to force the audio dropout, the next dropout will occur 5 minutes later.
I also have a new Intel Mac Mini which doesn't exhibit the periodic audio dropout problem but does have a similar audio dropout whenever I click on the Airport status icon. The dropout lasts longer on the Mini - about 15 seconds average before the audio signal quality fully recovers. Because the periodic dropout doesn't happen on the Mini, it isn't really an operational problem, but it is instructive to note that only the Intel Macs exhibit this particular behavior.
In troubleshooting the iMac, I have turned off all timing related items that I can think of including, Mail (check manually), Set Date and Time Automatically (OFF), all sleep, hard drive and screen timers OFF, all iCal reminders OFF, etc. I have also turned all Dashboard Widgets OFF, corrected permissions, tried a different user ID, reset the NVRAM and SMC. I have even tried setting the iChat app to open as a Rosetta app . Nothing has solved this problem yet.
The iMac is a dual core 20" with 1.5 GB of RAM and the Mini is a dual core with 512 MB of RAM. Both are running Tiger 10.4.5 Wireless signal level in all tests is 100 percent.
    Thanks for any help.
    Bill

OK, I have my Intel iMac connected to the Internet via an Ethernet converter. What this means is that the iMac is connected via Ethernet cable to the Ethernet converter, which, in turn, communicates wirelessly with a wireless router.
This seems to clearly solve the wireless connection audio issue as the Intel iMac thinks it has only an Ethernet connection. There is no audio dropout after five minutes or so, but there may be other Mac to Mac connection issues related to Intel Macs.
I'm going to run with this connection for awhile to see if there are other problems, but this seems to be a good workaround for the moment. I'm using a Buffalo Technology WLI-TX4-G54HP Ethernet converter, which costs about $60 USD at most online vendors in the US.
Although $60 may seem like a lot of money to spend on an Apple-created problem, using the Buffalo high power device is almost surely going to provide significantly better wireless range. This increased range advantage may be enough to offset a large part or all of the $60 cost.

  • Comcast put in a new modem today and I reactivated my airport.  Even though I get a flashing amber light (not green) I still am connected to the internet.  What should I do?

Comcast gave me new modem today.  Synced with Airport.  Amber light still flashing, but I still am connected to internet OK.  Should I be worried the light isn't "green?"

Should I be worried the light isn't "green?"
    Yes, you should.
What version of operating system are you using on your MacBook Pro?  If you do not know, click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen, then click About This Mac.
Post back with the OS X Version number that you see there.

  • How do I get my new Mustek scanner to work over Airport Extreme?

We can't get our new scanner to even show up over our wireless network.
When I hook it straight to my iMac (2.8 GHz Intel Core Duo, OS X 10.6.8 [Snow Leopard]), I can use the enclosed software (ImageAcquire), but it does NOT show up either in ImageCapture nor can I add it via the Print & Fax preferences.  When I hook it through our (previous generation) AirPort Extreme, it doesn't even show up in the ImageAcquire software that came with it, and I get the message that a cable is disconnected.
The scanner is a Mustek A3 ScanExpress 2400, and is supposed to work on Macs, since it has its own drivers.  I have downloaded the most current drivers and software direct from the manufacturer.  Apple doesn't have it listed in Software Update.
We have successfully run our HP scanner/printer over AirPort.
    Any suggestions?  Thanks.

When you say that you are hooking up the Mustek device, I assume that you mean via the USB port on the AirPort. Is that correct?
If you are connecting the Mustek device via the USB port on the AirPort Extreme, and the device does not appear when you click Print & Fax, that would likely indicate that Mustek has not provided network drivers for their device.
The USB port on the AirPort is far different than the USB port on a computer.
You might want to ask Mustek support if they have network drivers available for use on an Apple AirPort router.
Keep in mind that in almost all cases, only the print function is supported when you connect an all-in-one or combo device to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme.
Unless something has changed very recently, you will not be able to use the scan function when you connect your other HP device to the USB port on the AirPorts.
If you are connecting the HP using wireless only or via Ethernet, then you should have full functionality that way.

Whatever the problem is you no longer have a bootable system. You need to try reinstalling OS X.
Reinstall Snow Leopard without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Trying to download yahoo messenger and I keep getting a connection error. But it stats must use internet explorer to fix. I only have firefox, no internet explorer.. anyway to get around it?

Once again, I am trying to download Yahoo messenger and It only has tips for Internet explorer We only have Firefox (mozilla) installed and so I need help getting around this in order to install.

And they do offer a compatible version. As I am running running Netflix on my first generation iPad just fine.
You'll need to first "purchase" the non compatible version  either on a newer device that can run it or on a computer running iTunes using the Apple ID that is on the first Gen iPad.
After that is done, you should be able to go into the App Store App, and find Netflix under the Purchased Tab. Tap on it to download it and you should be warned its not compatible, but will be offered the compatible version.
App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app

upgraded both my iphone and mac os and I noticed that when listening to internet radio I only get 1 channel whereas before I was able to receive 2 channels. Any suggestions?

I received my week 16 MBP yesterday morning. It has been perfect thus far. Quite the improvment over my old iBook. I do hear some noises rarely but not enough to make me think there is a problem, I believe they are just the standard purrs and ticks of a high-powered computer. It doesn't run hot. I'd say cool to rather warm if used heavily. I hope I have a problem free experiance. I would hate for this product to tarnish Apple's reputation, that would be unacceptable considering this product is amazing. I will say this; I called Applecare, more out of curiousity than anything else and told them that I had just purchased an MBP and, while mine was fine, I had heard allot of disturbing reports about noise and heat. I asked point blank if Apple was aware of any issues and if they where working to resolve it. The answer I got was surprisingly forward. I was informed that they were "VERY" aware and working to correct the issues. He then told me I was lucky to recieve one of the quiet MBPs. I hope they work it out soon.

  • Only Getting 2 Bars Off My AirPort Extreme

I'm only getting two, sometimes three bars, off my AirPort Extreme (802.11n) that is positioned less then 10 ft. away. This is tolerable for my Macbook thought is really hurting the internet features on my Xbox 360, Wii and web enabled Blu-Ray player.
My basic setup is an Airport Base Station, Printer and iMac in the bedroom; with everything else in the living room. Basically all there is to block the signal is less than 12" of drywall and wood.
Any ideas how I can get a cleaner, beefed-up signal?

    Welcome to the discussions!
On your Mac, if you are in the area where the game consoles and Blu-Ray player are located, please hold down the "option" key while you click on the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of your screen.
Note the values for the following:
    PHY Mode:
    Channel:
    Transmit Rate:
Meanwhile, you might want to download Air Radar and use its Scan function to get an accurate reading of your signal strength at various locations. (The "bars" at the top of your screen are not a very accurate indicator of the actual signal strength) Also look for any other networks and note if they are operating on any channels that are close to your network. Air Radar is not free, but there is a 15 day trial period.
Please post back with your results
