Only have the pdf file

I have recently inherited our companies tech writer position. A task I have is to update a manual that had been created in FrameMaker. However the only file that exists referring to this manual is the end product - pdf file. Amazing but true. I have searched everywhere available on the network.
Is there anyway to use the existing pdf file to "reverse engineer" this manual, by either importing or otherwise into FrameMaker? It's almost 170 pages and I'm not anxious to try to recreate it from scratch.

If you enjoy wielding a text editor, and if the document isn't littered with tables*, you could – not a recommendation, just a suggestion! – save out the .pdf as .txt, thereby discarding all potentially troublesome second-guessed formatting that might arrive with the .rtf version.
Then, move briskly through the .txt file to add mml tags for your preferred styles; open the tagged file in FrameMaker, import the style definitions from another document or set them up from scratch, and enjoy the weekend <rofl>. This is what I did yesterday, in fact, to recreate source from a .pdf as you have found yourself obliged to do. Alternatively, seeing as we're already in 2009, I suppose you could tag the raw .txt as xml – rather more work, though.

You should be able to just place them in your Books library in iTunes and check to ensure that your Book library is configured to sync to your iPod when you sync your iPod to iTunes.

Picture this: A client gives me two zipped archives; one archive has a SWF file and another has HTML5, JS, and CSS. Both were published after checking "Scorm 1.2" in the reporting tab in Captivate. I'm just one developer and all I have at my disposal is html, javascript, and css.

The 'built-in method' is called Self-paced Learning, and it usually has a message window that appears when you resume the lesson which asks the user whether or not they want to resume from the last visited slide. However, as has been mentioned before on this forum, as soon as you activate LMS Reporting in Quiz Settings then Self-paced Learning is disabled. It's only designed for situations where an LMS is NOT involved. LMSs typically have other mechanisms for resuming playback and having more than one mechanism active at the same time could result in conflicts.
SCORM-compliant LMSs have the option of using Resume Data Bookmarking, but not all LMSs implement this in consistent ways. The new SCORM drivers with Cp6 do a much better job of implementing bookmarking than previous versions, so I encourage anyone to upgrade to Cp6 if they haven't already done so.
Since it sounds like you're trying to roll your own LMS I'm assuming that your Cp modules will have Quiz Reporting turned on, which means Self-paced Learning is NOT going to be an option. You'll need to work with the SCORM Resume Data to achieve your goals. But this is NOT an area for the faint-hearted or the non-programmer. In SWF content, the scoring variables are passed from within the Captivate runtime to the Javascript SCORM API. In HTML5 content this will all be JS code, however, it's going to be quite complex JS code and messing with it at all is likely to break something. Personally, I wouldn't go that route. If you're going to build your own LMS, make it the LMS that picks up the scoring and resume data from the Captivate output, rather than hacking the Cp code itself.

Can you have the PDF file do calculations in a fillable Acrobat PDF?

I want to create a hot lunch form for our school. I want to be able to have the user fill in the QUANTITY, but have the form automatically multiply the quantity by the cost to and give the total amount due. Is this possible? Should I create the form in Excel, and then convert it into Acrobat?

Hi there, yea thats easily possible. and lots of ways to do it.
The easist way i think is as follows
1. create a field thats contains the cost of the lunch and hide it if necassary then in the total cost box;
2. double click the field with the select object tool and go to the calcualte tab (far right);
3. click the button next to 'value is the' and change sum to product; and then
4. click the 'pick' button and choose the fields (ie quantity and price) you want to multiply and whola!
another way (and neater) is
1. Choose the 'Field' that will have the total cost in, go to the 'calculate' tab and choose 'simplified field notation' (this only works if your field doesnt contain space or special charactes)
2. click 'edit' on the right
3. type for example; quantity * 2.75
Quantity is name of field * = times and 2.75 is the price etc.
4. close dialogue box and whola :-)

How can users who have Acrobat Reader only save scanned pdf files so that the text on them is searchable using ctrl-F? I just use the recognize text with ocr feature in the full version of Acrobat and this seem to do the trick. Reader doesn't work!

Our users have scanned pdf files they want to be able to search using ctrl-f. I got them to be searchable by doing a recognize text using ocr with Acrobat Professional vesion 8. They want to know if they can make the files searchable with Acrobat Reader only or if they need the full Acrobat Professional software to make the files searchable.

To clarify a bit they need to have Adobe Acrobat, not Adobe Reader. Reader has not been associated with the Acrobat name for 3 or more versions. The process you are asking about is a creation process - the purpose of Acrobat - and NOT a reading feature.

I'm developing an application where a file is need to be saved as pdf. But, if there is already a pdf file with same name in the specified directory, I wish to overwrite it. And in the overwrite case, read-only files should not be overwritten. If the duplicate(old) file is opened in windows (Win7) explorer preview, it is write protected. So, it should not be overwritten. I tried to get the '
FILE_ATTRIBUTE_READONLY' using MS API 'GetFileAttributes', but it didn't succeed. How Adobe marks the file as read-only for preview? Do I need to check some other attribute of the file?

Saving as a PDF file for some users have been a problem. If you boot into Safe Mode and run iPhoto you can create undamaged PDF files. We don't know why the problem but this is a workaround.
This problem prevents many from ordering books, calendars and cards since iPhoto creates PDF file of them for uploading and printing. Booting into Safe Mode lets them successfully order those items.

In transfering pdf files from my old PowerBook G4 to my new MacBook Pro, half of the pdf files now have a blank page as an icon. Also, all pdf files that I now create through print in Safari are blank. Nevertheless, all of these files open properly with Adobe Reader. This is the only type of file that lacks a proper icon. Why has the proper icon been lost & how do I solve this problem?

When you transfer files from another computer or over an FTP site or email, some of the info is sometimes lost. It's actually pretty rare from computer to computer but just about always happens on Internet transfers, although those mostly lose their icons.

I am getting messages that I can't download and read .pdf files since I have the wrong Adobe reader. I know about their security disasters of course, but I downloaded the latest version of Adobe Reader from the Adobe web site and I have other ,pdf file readers as well, and for some reason they won't work either. I have 5 computers running top end processors and RAM. By this I mean I have one, this one which I am using that has an AMD Phenom Black 3.2 Quad-core with 8 GBs of Corsair top DDR2 RAM, my other two AMD have either an Athlon II triple core with 4 GBs of DDR2 Corsair RAM, one with the Phenom X4 965 3.4 GHz Quad-core with 8 GBs of their best DDR2 RAM, and two Intels with the i7 920 Processors using the triple channel 1366 socket processors and one with 8 GBs of low latency DDR3 RAM and the other with 4 GBs of the same RAM. I am getting the message on this one, which has a fresh install of XP Pro X64 operating system, as do the other 4 as well. I have run Avast Business Pro Anti-virus on this one, which I am getting the message on with a single result which I deleted, and also both Spybot Search and Destroy, which came back clean as well as Malwarebytes Antimalware, which got a lot of tracing cookies now removed, and SuperAntiSpware which also found a few cookies also now deleted. Can you tell me what I need to do to get these files to show as .pdf files rather than as a clean blank page. One other issue is that I wish to know how to turn off my downloads so they are saved and Mozilla will give me the option of returning them instead of me losing them all together as it does now. I have Windows 98 and need Acrobat to open up the pdf files for 5.0

I have the old system, Windows 98 and presently have the free Adobe 5.0 version on my Compaq Presario Computer, and it is a 5242 model desktop.
I have inadvertanly switched over to Compaq Carbon Copy 32 Version 5.0 but since, have uninstalled it and now, on each of what was the pdf files initially of which I have, of which is at least 16 or more, on each of those files, an error message comes up and says "PROGRAM NOT FOUND," and states the following: "Windows cannot find CCW32EXE. This program is needed for opening the pdf files." And then it has a dialogue box with the computer operational symbol in it as C:\ and then it wants me to locate it. I cannot locate it through the "auto" because, this sytem being so old, doesn't have a magnifying glass or a "search" tool to do this in the "My Computer Icon on the Desktop as the Compaq people wanted me to do. I would have to do this manually. I have already talked to the Compaq people on their chat line and because of this, they said they couldn't help me with this problem and referred me over to you.
I've tried to find a download for 5.0, though I really don't think I need one since it is currently installed. I believe the proper way to fix this is to just convert the CCW32EXE over to the Acrobat pdf files and have those files opened and should open up all of my 15 or so files altogether at the same time because they all converted over to something else at the same time prior.

But I believe to alleviate this problem, if you could just give me the information to be able to open up the pdf files to 5.0 and find out what download I may pursue, it might be able to correct this problem. I already have the 5.0 Acrobat installed, however.

I have followed your directions and I have the old system of Windows 98, so I had to go to "programs" and come up to Acrobat 5.0 and once in there, all of the Window there is greyed out, although I can still go to the tool bars above in it. I went to "file" and went to "open" and from there, I received an "open" window with a dialogue box in it and in that dialogue box as I scrolled down, it wants me to put in there, one of the following, "desktop," "my documents," "3 1/2 floppy [A:]," "[C:]," "system _save [D:]," ""[E:," "[F:]," ete; of these which do I pick in the "open" dialogue box? and down at the bottom, is the FILE NAME and what do I put in there? Just below that, it has the FILES OF TYPE which has there Adobe pdf Files, in it's dialogue box. I hit these, but I still get an error message of which basically says, "NOT FOUND, please put in proper file name given." And I don't know actually where it is given.

Not stupid you! To, from PDF--it gets confusing!
To edit a PDF file, you need to use Acrobat. Depending on how much work needs to be done to the PDF, it may make sure sense to edit in Word, and then reconvert to PDF. Acrobat doesn't function as a word processor, so while limited changes to the text should be fine, extensive updates may not yield the results you're looking for.
That said, if you don't have Acrobat, you are welcome to try it for free for 30 days. For more information, see www.adobe.com/products/acrobat.html.
