Only one core working in Core Duo X60

I bought a 2nd-hand Lenovo/IBM x60 Thinkpad about a year ago on Craigslist. Perfect condition, nice price, all legit-looking, and I'm using it now -- except that the guy had replaced the legit XP Pro with a bootleg installation of Windows7, without saving any backups or making rescue disks or anything. It worked fine and updated and everything, but I didn't want to run bootleg Windows, so I was determined to reconstruct the legit XP Pro SOMEhow. I had various Windows disks (incl. a non-legit install CD some vendor stuffed into my shopping bag) and a full set of recovery disks from my T40 Thinkpad.
It wasn't easy or quick, and didn't go smoothly, and I don't think I saved detailed notes on all the steps I took, but I finally got it running smoothly. XP Pro, SP3, with the same ID# as on the sticker, and enough updated drivers to run properly. I've been using it pretty happily for the past year, except that the speed has been disappointing. Recently, it's finally dawned on me that I'm only using one CPU core in the 2-core "Core Duo" CPU. That's presumably because the T40 only has a single-core CPU, and I used its XP setup (with some updated drivers, etc.).
Device Manager says my Computer is an "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC", not an "ACPI Multiprocessor PC".
Other than converting to Linux or buying a copy of XP Pro. . . is there a way I can educate this computer to use both of its CPU cores??
[Here's more details, and what I THINK I know about the problem:]
I think the problem is in the HAL = Hardware Abstraction Layer, and I've already tried using XPud Linux to substitute-rename the multi-core halmacpi.dll file from the SPFiles\i386 folder, making it the Hal.dll file in the System32 folder (which was formerly identical to the 1-core halacpi.dll in that folder -- no, not the halaacpi.dll file I expected to be identical). But the computer wouldn't boot Windows afterwards, so I substituted-renamed the Hal.dll file back -- successfully, without having to restore from an image. I'm guessing that there's another file or two that refer to that Hal.dll file that don't match up, but I can't find any advice online other than to re-install Windows. Since I still don't have the "real" Windows install CD for this Core Duo computer, I don't think that's a good option.
I feel a bit victimized here, because I'm going to a bunch of extra trouble to be legit, but I'm not being treated (by MS or Lenovo/IBM) as a valued customer. (I must have gotten at least 5 or 6 "You're a pirate!" error messages while I was trying to restore the computer to its original legitimate OS!)
Lenovo/IBM will sell me a new Rescue disk for $50 -- I bought one for an earlier Thinkpad, my T22, IIRC -- but I'm not confident that I'd get joy from that, either. (As I recall, the old one I bought didn't do everything I'd hoped it would do.) Plus, I'd rather not have to reconstruct and reconfigure all my software unless I have to.
BTW, I've wiped out the traditional IBM Rescue partition I had originally set up and merged it with C:. (I wanted the GBs.) I do still have an image backup of it, and I could restore it (and try using it), but there's no reason to believe that it would help, since it presumably came from my 1-core T40, not from a Core Duo machine.
Any suggestions?

Have you updated the BIOS to the latest version and checked the CPU Core setting in the BIOS?

You can try cleaning the headphone jack. However, I suspect that th headphone jack needs replacement.

  • 2 thunderbolt displays worked fine daisy chained, moved one to work in other room, now only one will work.  both work independantly or both plugged into my macbook pro.

I have 2 thunderbolt displays and have had them daisy chained for months where I only would plug one into my macbook pro 15" retina and both displays have worked great.  The other day I moved one of them into the conference room, connected also a HDMI cord to a projector to do some work with staff on software design.
I brought my thunderbolt back into my office and plugged it back into the other thunderbolt dispay, then plugged the other display back into my macbook and started it up and now I can only get one to work daisy chained.  They both work great independantly or if both of them are plugged into my macbook pro, but not daisy chained any longer.
Is there a setting I need to look at to maybe reset so that my macbook pro will use both thunderbolt displays daisy chained?
Thanks for anyones advice and sharing any similar issues and how you fixed the issue.

    Hi there,
The first thing that I would recomend is resetting the PRAM on your portable.
OS X Mountain Lion: Reset your computer’s PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ph11243
If the issues persist, then you may need to force the device to detect displays.
OS X Mountain Lion: About the Display pane of System Preferences
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5369
    How can I detect displays?
If the detect displays option is not available, hold down the Option key while you are in the Display pane.

  • Why is 1080i the only one that works for my slideshow.

Well... I'm getting to my breaking point.
    First my system.. Mac Pro 2.66 2x300gb raid 0. x1900 ACD 30
    5gb Ram
I have read many many posts.. but I still need your help.
I have found that the only thing that gives me a marketable slideshow in terms of quality images is to make a slideshow in imovie under 1080i.
The problem with this is that it really really slows my computer down, and I don't want to do this with a slide show of about 150 images per client, and then have wait more for transistions.
    Shouldn't I start a new slideshow in "DV" setting for a 4x3?
I have tried reducing res from 10.2 mp to a 1024x??? settting for images (depending on orientation). All I seem to lose here is a bit of sharpening as I reduce the image resolution, which makes sense if I understand correctly.
So... Where to go from here.
I read the posts.. and have determined that I can use Photo to move (which I have) to make clips and import them into Imovie. Again, a slow process as each clip has to be done seperatly. Is there another way with PTM, because it does render the best Ken burns effect I have seen. Again 150 images is too long to wait to make a slide show of a wedding, not cost effective for me.
    Hope someone can help.

    Anyone??
When I make a movie in 1080 or 720.. it takes alot of resources and slows things down.
Just wondering why choosing those options are the only ones that seem to work
I really need to get it into 4x3 format too.

  • HD slideshow is the only one that works for me.. WHY??

I have a new mac pro with lots of hd and ram 5GB.. so I don't think its my system.
What I need to know is that I can make an acceptable slideshow if
    1) I lower the resolution of my photos from 3884x2600 to about 1024x1024
    2) I create a imovie 720hd or 1080i HD.
ANY other format creates a lousy final picture quality when viewed on the TV. I get a shimmering, but not so noticible jaggies as some have posted. If I keep the photo still and not use KB.. the still images are ok, but not fantastic. The KB kills them. This seems opposite of what I have read of the bug in imovie6.
Can anyone explain why if I use the HD formats for Imovie the photos turn out ok?
I would like to keep them in a 4x3 format but can't if I use the HD formats. Is there a way to make it 4x3 after?
Anyway.. I have done a lot of testing and this is the best I can get so far.

Is your mplayer using alsa? 'cat ~/.mplayer/config' might have the answer (if you use the config) or just check mplayer output:

  • Only one channel working - fixable?

Recently my ipod starting playing only one channel through headphones or a speaker jack - eg I can hear only whatever is coming through the left side speaker. I've verified that the problem is with the ipod, not the headphones. However, if I put pressure from a specific angle on the headphone cord right above where it connects to the ipod, both L and R channels work. This goes away again when the pressure is released.
Has this happened to anybody else? Is it a fixable problem?
    Thanks!

You need to replace the headphone jack on the iPod.

  • Only one speaker working with Airport Express

    Hi,
Hoping for some help. I just connected an Airport Express to my stereo but only one speaker (left) is working. I plugged in headphones to the jack in the AExpress as suggested in other postings and both left and right work there. I have checked and updated Airport Extreme base station and Airport Express firmware software.
I have an older amp (connecting the RCA cables to the TAPE ports since there is no AUX) but both speakers work for everything but the AirTunes.
I am hoping there is a fix since I would really like this to work.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Thanks for your response and sorry for the delay in
responding. I did take the first set of cables we got
(Y-adapter 2-male to 1-mini) back because we thought
that was the problem. However after I exchanged for a
new cable we have the same problem. I am thinking
that the chances are that we would get 2 sets of bad
    cables are pretty slim.
In both cases only the red cable worked for both
speakers but if we only plug in the black cable into
either speaker channel in the amp you can faintly
hear the music and some static.

Did you ever get the problem with airtunes just playing through the one speaker? I have the same problem...reckon it is a faulty input port on the express. Did you try an optical cable? It might work as it works differently.
