Only one fan starts spinning

Got a msi twi. Frozr gaming 780 oc. SLI config.
When i turn on computer cold often only 1 fan starts spinning on either of the cards. Results in full speed of the working fan once in windows.
If i let the system warm up a little then turn of computer and turn on again all fan work fine.
Is it because the temps in computer are too low.. Approx 18 degrees c?

It seems as though the lube in the fan may be "gummed" up. I've had 2 MSI Twin Frozr cards in the past that had similar problem and returned them under warranty. Both fans should run the same speed at all times, if not the you have defective fan. Time to RMA under the warranty.

  • IMac 2011, screen freezes and fans start spinning

    Hello,
I have this really wierd problem with my iMac i5 2011 edition since a month or so...
A lot of times when I am downloading or watching a movie or playing games under OSX on my iMac my screen slowly freezes, it always starts with my finder and then te rest goes, I get the marble of death and shortly after that the fans start spinning like crazy, they start slow but after a minute or so they make a lot of nice. Take in mind then I am unable to use my iMac in anyway, the mouse moves but it doesn't respond to clicks and also my keyboard doesn't respond, I keep getting the marble of death still.
The wierd thing is that sometimes it doesn't do this for 2/3 days and sometimes it does it like 3/4 in an hour (have to restart manually). Also, this is very interesting, I have a version of Windows 7 installed on my iMac wich I use mainly for gaming and under windows it NEVER freezes in any kind, even when I game like 5/6 hours long straight.
Therefor I thought it must be a software problem so I did a complete system reboot 2 days ago but that didn't help, already froze 3 times since...
Can anyone help me? I still have 2 months of applecare but I have a LAN party soon so I am not to anxious to go 3 weeks without my iMac, maybe there is a simple solution that I am missing...

    Some things you can try:
    1. Try a new user account, create one in System Preferences -> Users and Groups, test to see if the issue still persists in this new user account, this will give us a lot of information. (if the problem is the same or it vanishes, let us know)
    2. Make sure all your software is up-to-date, Apple Logo -> Software update.
    3. Unplug all 3rd party devices, just keep in the necessary, Power, Keyboard + Mouse, no ethernet or external hard drives etc.
    4. Reset the PRAM http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    5. Reset the SMC http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    6. Boot to the recovery partition (CMD + R on startup until you see a spinning cog with an apple logo, then let go) -> Choose english as the main language -> Choose Disk Utility -> Select your hard drive from the left pane of Disk Utility (NOT Macintosh HD, the one that will look similar to: 1TB ST3200WAJS) -> Select the 'First Aid' tab -> Bottom right of the window it will say 'S.M.A.R.T Status: ________' ... What does it say after smart status?
    7. While still inside the Recovery Partition, select Macintosh HD -> First Aid (tab) -> Verify Disk -> Repair Disk (unless it says the volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK) -> Verify Disk Permissions -> Repair Disk Permissions (if there are differing permissions on the disk)
Let us know if the issue still persists, but make sure you do all of those steps correctly and post back as much information as possible (PRAM takes two chimes at startup, unplug the power cable for 15 seconds, plug it back in, wait 5 seconds, turn on... make sure you follow all articles)
    Good Luck!

  • Only one fan running?

Hoping somebody can help me with this,
I have a macbook pro, bought late 2008.
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.53 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 6 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
Ive recently got smcFanControl and I have noticed that only the left fan is running at 6196rpm with a temprature of 74 degrees.. and that is only with Chrome running.
Is that normal or is it time for me to get the fans changed?

Should I refrain from using the computer?
    Yes, backup and shut down.
I am planning on getting a new Macbook Pro in the coming months,
Now is the time, your tampering sealed it's fate.
but I just want to make sure that using the computer with only one fan won't harm it.
It will, it has dual cooling for a purpose, both sides of the cooling system need to chilled.
My computer is not working, is my personal data lost?

  • Yoga 13 i5 only one fan is running

    Hi everybody,
I had that one issue that none of the fans were running at first. I opened the laptop and checked the cable connections after that one fan was running again but the other one is off the whole time.
I tested a few things like playing a game to see if the other one will start turning but no. While the left fan is reacting on workload and temperature the other is doing nothing. I saw the right one spinning some times while booting but not for long.
Has anyone an idea what the problem could be?
I also tried the program called Notebook Fancontrol where u can manually set the fan speed, but even if u set it on 100% only the left fan is running.
I have the newest Bios installed btw.
Thank u very much for ur help :-)

  • Only one fan spinning R7850

    Card : R7850 Twin Frozr 2GD5.
The other fan only works if i set fan speed to 85% at afterburner. What should i do? Do i need to flash the bios or anything to fix this issue. The card is a year and half old.

    Hi
Might be card's fans going bad. If they are bearing fans, you could try to oil it. Else you might have to consider buying an aftermarket ones.
You can also ask MSI. If it's still on warranty, they might help you with this: >>How to contact MSI.<<

  • Extinction according to the only one of starts again of iMac

    Bonjour
A chaque fois - depuis quelques jours - que j'éteins correctement mon iMac 27" sous OS X 10.7.5, il se rallume seul au bout de quelques secondes ou de quelques minutes.
    Comment résoudre ce problème ?
    Merci d'avance

    Thanks, Eustace and Kirk.
To Kirk--I saw that screen when I was trying to troubleshoot before doing the smart thing and asking the forum--but do I have to have both drives plugged in at the same time?  It's (appropriately) only showing the one that's currently plugged in (whether "Oldie" or "Newbie").
To Eustace--yes, that's what I would assume would happen--it's what happened when I plugged in "Oldie" for the first time. I was caught off guard when it didn't prompt me this time. For plenty of people, "hey, if I plug in any external HD it asks if I want to use it as backup--sweet!  Because I [launched my old one out of a fifth-story window by mistake] or something.
I really appreciate both of your quick and helpful replies.  Thank you!

  • PC won't boot: fans stop spinning at start up!

    Hi all
I have a Compaq CQ5335fr that worked just fine for a few years (3).
Then one day, it went off suddenly and wouldn't boot any more:
When I power it up, fans (CPU and chassis) start spinning for 15 seconds then they stop spinning. Only GPU fan keeps spinning. I have still blue and amber lights in the front of the desktop.
I usually push the power up button until it powers off. Then when I restart, same thing!
I tried the following with NO SUCCESS:
    - clean & dust parts
    - Reset CMOS
    - Bought another PSU
    - Played with DIMMS (put one by one, inverted etc.)
    - Unplugged all components and replug one by one
    - And a couple of other desperate things
    - Put the hard drive in another computer to check if data are there: OK (although had "cant' access"  errors in the beginning
    Nothing worked.
NOW I NEED YOUR HELP TO LOCATE THE ISSUE IN ORDER TO SOLVE IT!
    Thank you in advance.

    Hello again Moyiize.
I can't safely say if other motherboards would work or not.  However, you should be able to get the same motherboard through HP.  Here is a link to your computer's HP Part Surfer page.  You should be able to order it there.
If you want to say thanks make sure to click the white star under my name to give me Kudos.  I really appreciate it!
I hope you have a great evening.

  • Only one of my fans are working on my macbook pro retina 13 inch late 2013 model. Is something wrong?

It appears that only one of my fans are working on my macbook pro with retina display 13 inch late 2013 model. Is some thing wrong? if so how can i fix it?

To my knowledge there is only one fan on all 13" Mac notebooks, Retina or standard screen. Not enough space for a second fan and no Discrete GPU to cool.
    So nothing is wrong.

  • Macbook Pro fans constantly spinning

My MacBook Pro's fans are constantly spinning.  I've spoken to support and they think one of my fans may be out of balance and that I should take it in.  I really don't have the capacity to be without my Mac at the moment, and I know I should get it sorted, but its not easy.
I've reset SMC, reset PRAM, checked the hard disk, cleared permissions etc....
Reason I did all that is because it's sluggish at times, especially when I have lots of apps open, but I have 16gb ram.  SSD Hybrid.  This shouldnt be happening.
Any ideas? I tried to find out about doing a hardware test but restarting pressing D doesn't load it up..
    Some details about my machine:
    MacBook Pro 15-inch late 2011
    2.2 ghz i7
    16gb ram
    OSX 10.9.3
Currently I have Safari open, that is the only app.  Although I do also have menubar apps running.
Just don't understand why the fan is always running.  It's also very hot too.

Try the Apple Hardware Test by starting the MBP holding the OPTION+D keys.
Also open Activity Monitor and set it to ALL PROCESSES and %CPU to display values from high to low.
    Install istat menus:
    http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/
When the fans start spinning fast, post images of both for inspection.
    Ciao.

  • GTX 760 one fan occasionally stuck (not spinning)

    Hello everyone.
Has anyone encountered this problem that I'm having with my only 2 month old MSI GTX 760 Twin Frozr Gaming OC Edition card?
When I start up my PC, only one of the two fans will start to spin, first at normal speed but then it will soon accelerate to full speed. I guess that the card detects that one fan is not spinning so it will automatically accelerate the other to full speed for heat protection. When looking, I can actually see the not spinning fan blades do very small movement (1-2 mm) back and forth, like it's trying to spin, so there is power at least. Powering off the PC and restarting multiple times will not help at this point.
The weird thing is that if I lightly nudge the blades the fan will then start to spin and work normally again for maybe a week (5-15 PC start-ups on average), before the problem re-appears again.
The problematic fan is spinning freely if I take out the card and spin the fan blades manually, there is no more resistance than in the normally working fan. So it's not a case of broken bearings or dust in them, or any kind of physical obstruction.
It's a pain in the ass, to get the fan spinning again I always have to open my case to physically touch the fan blades. And that workaround only helps for maybe a week. I didn't plan on having to open my PC case every week when I bought this card.
I have updated drivers several times, and can't really believe this could be a software issue. The card is is only 2 months old, and was working perfectly for the 1st month.
I'll soon send the card to warranty repairs through my retailer, unless somebody can suggest a software side fix for this problem.

    Thanks for your reply.
I'm not able to save the vbios, when I try it with GPU-Z, my PC freezes completely.
    The card is N760 TF 2GD/OC, S/N 602-V284-300B1409112019.
GPU-Z says BIOS version is 80.04.C4.00.2F (P2004-0010), MSI Live Update 6 gives Graphics card BIOS version as NV284MH.350 and does not offer any update.
Are you able to check with that information if there is a newer vbios available?
Would attempting to update the vbios void the warranty of the card?

  • Fan borked? Making funny noises when it starts spinning up

    All -
I'm fairly certain I have to take my PB in for service, but I'd like to verify that first, since my warranty expired two months ago.
For the past two weeks or so, every time I start up a video-intensive application (such as world of warcraft), the fan quickly spins up to high power. That's normal - but it's been making a high pitched buzzing sound that is definitely not normal. It originates in the upper left corner, at about the top of the speaker (which I disabled to verify it). Further, I run multiple desktops, and if I leave the game open but switch to another desktop (using Desktop Manager .5.3), the noise generally subsides in 10-20 seconds. This makes me think it's some sort of fan attached to the video card...? Comments? Thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Lance

I'm having the same issue, also due to World of Warcraft. I'm used to the fan being loud, but the high pitch sound you mention is definitely not normal. Honestly, it scared me so badly the first time I heard it, I think I actually jumped in my seat a bit. This was about a week ago.
I'm away at college, so with no means of fixing the problem at the moment, I started playing the game at the lowest settings possible (800x600 res, colors at 16-bit instead of 24, etc) That seemed to tame the beast, but only for a short time. In the past two days, I've attempted to start up, low settings as usual, but within a literal minute or two, the fan powers up and the strange sound begins.
I'm still trying to determine how I should go about solving this, (or if the problem is even rooted in the fan itself) whether it be via apple, or on my own, since my warranty also ended about 2 months ago, and I don't have Applecare.
It looks like you posted this a few weeks ago, Corbets... if you see this topic again, I'd appreciate it if you could reply with any information you gathered and/or how you went about fixing the problem... if you have yet.
    Thanks,
    Pam
Also, if anyone else happens across this topic, how much free advice and/or help can I get if I walk in to my local Mac store with my above problem... before they decide I need to start forking over some cash? I'm a bit nervous in that respect. As I mentioned, I'm currently away at college, and I try to save where I can.

I can't get Firefox to start up. I've downloaded a new copy several times and keep getting the error message, "A copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time". I do not have Firefox running anywhere.

See [[Firefox is already running but is not responding]], the image shown in that article is the Windows equivalent of the error message that you are receiving, but the information relates to the Mac.

  • 1. Does not start automatically  2. Only ONE user at a time

When I plug the IPOD it should start iTunes automatically (I have the box checked) but it does not. Never has done that. I have the latest 7.1 version.
Another pain in the rear is that only one user at a time can run iTunes. That stinks. If another user has it open you MUST log off, stop them, log on. They ought to make this work for all users as other windows pro rams do. If it is doing NOTHING with the library then I ought to be able to use it.

That may be true but it is a real pain since when it happens the only way to recover is to terminate all of the iTunes modules with task manager and start it manually. It also leaves the IPOD in a state that says do not disconnect. You can disconnect since nothing is really happening but there is no excuse for this not to start much faster. When you have multiple users it is a real pain. It ought to be able to either end when finished or better yet allow multiple users simultaneously updating from different libraries.
I guess i will just have to get in the habit of treating it as a single user and start and stop it every time I need it and be suer not to let it run. Not nice because that means waiting for larger Podcast downloads instead of having there ready for me when I sign on my computer.
