Only one sound source at the time works.
Not that long ago things used to be good. Things used to work nice. I was happy. My desktop was happy. Then, at some point during the summer, something went wrong. I can't remember when exactly it happened, but at some point a poison pill came from the updates, my computer got a bad trip. No error messages, warnings or anything else to prepare me for what was coming.
My hotkeys in sawfish for changing the volume just stopped working. After a while of scratching my head, I noticed that the mixer device that used to be in /dev just isn't there anymore. Gone like a fart in the desert. No idea how to get it back.
And if that wasn't enough, the sound also got generally cranky. If I have a youtube or any other similar tab open in my browser, totem is mute. So, if I want to watch a movie or listen to a music and it's not working, I have to figure out which one of the damn browser tabs has decided to hijack my audio and close it. It's sort of a problem in modern multitasking environment.
Any useful ideas? And no, reinstalling the system is not one.
If I get this back working, I swear to god I will never ever run updates again.

Instead of guessing, start playing mplayer and some flash source (youtube or whatever) and post the output of 'fuser -v /dev/snd/*'.
Is your mplayer using alsa? 'cat ~/.mplayer/config' might have the answer (if you use the config) or just check mplayer output:

Idea Centre K only starts up 50% of the time; I am confused.

I have a new Lenovo Idea Centre K desktop with 64bits and Windows Vista. Unfortunately, the computer only makes it past the "Lenovo" booting screen about half the time. The computer freezes on this screen, I must hold down the power button, then start again, where it will always start the next time. This freezing occurs before the beep part with the blinking cursor. If it makes it past the Lenovo screen, there is always only one beep. Usually, the times it doesn't start are after 12 or more hours when the computer is turned off. After I shut it down and try again, it will start every time and work fine thereafter. I checked that it is properly set to 115V for my regional power needs. This issue is annoying because I must watch the computer power up rather than push the button and let it power while I do other activities. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We can look into the issue generically and see if there are any thoughts on things to try. To make more progress, it would be helpful to know which model K series desktop you have, and a bit about your configuration, and whether this pattern is consistent.
Does it always fail to boot all the way through on first power up, and then always successfully go through on the retry? What, if anything has been added or externally connected to the system via USB or other ports?

How can I synch my ipod & iphone music (purchased from itunes on my old laptop) to my new laptop? I keep getting the same message on my itunes on my new laptop: " The ipod/Iphone is synched with another itunes library. An ipod/iphone can be synched with only one itunes library at a time. What would you like to do - Erase and Synch or Transfer Purchases?" What do I do?
A couple of other items:
1) I am guessing Apple does not keep a history of all my music purchases? As I did not have my entire library backed-up anywhere, and relying on the music I have on my ipod and my iphone as my only source of itunes music....I have lost over 500 songs!!!
2) I used to have an Apple account under another account name, and since have switched to a new account name. Is there anyway to find the history of purchases from my old Apple account name and transfer these over to my new account name and onto my new laptop?
I hope someone can help, I am having a very difficult time trying to obtain answers. AngieThe iphone/ipod is NOT a storage/backup device. Not maintaining a backup copy is a big mistake.
You can transfer itunes purchases from your iphone/ipod to your computer:
Authorize your computer for all accounts and then click File>Transfer Purchases -
I have an email account causes the machine to hang up after being in use for a day. It only occurs on my Macbook Pro and only one particular account. The problem account works fine on my iMac and Windows Machines. I have been to the local Genius bar and through trial and error we have determined that Mail is working ok but somehow the account is causing the problem. I have used this account for years. Any ideas what is causing this?
No idea why, but one thing you may try if you have the time, is create a new user, and set up the problem mail account in the new user space. See if it causes your MBP to hang as well. That will tell you if it is something wrong with your main User, or something wrong with MBP.
Assuming this works, I'd nuke the problem account in your main user space, re-start, and reinititate the account and see if that helps.
Depening on how many email accounts you have setup, it may be necessary to nuke the whole Mail folder in your User/Library.... Hard way to get it to work, but just my idea. -
The ipod 'harms ipod' is synced with another itunes library.Do you want to erase this ipod and sync with this itunes library? An ipod can be synced with only one itunes library at a time. Erasing and syncing replace the contents of this ipod with the contents of this itunes library.
I don't know what to do? I should save my library before I replace the contents, but I don't know how to do that! Same as you would if you bought a pc; copy everything from your old computer to your new one. Then you can just sync everything from the new computer, as you did with the old one.

Only one row appendable at a time in alv
I would like to limit only one blank row at a time in my alv grid. Means, if i append a row using the standard "Append Row" Button, the user should not be able to append a second blank row till he fills out the first one.
Any hints ??

i put some code in the ...AFTER event, but it seems it is not executed on clicking the append button. I set a breakpoint there but it did not break.

my main problem is that when i append multiple rows in the alv and subsequently save the data from this alv grid, somehow one field is getting cleared and not holding the value the user has entered. for example, if i add 5 rows and then put data in these rows and save it, second row shows an initial value for a date field in the table. rest of the rows hold the correct value. i don't know if it is a webdynpro bug or my mistake...i tried redoing everything but to no avail...same problem everywhere.
thus i m trying to restrict the user to one row at a time only. it will be ideal if i can somehow solve the original problem. if not, even restricting to one row will be good enough.

Want my JFrame to be the *only* one that can end the program when closed
Hi all,
I have an application that is essentially a launcher for other applications -- it's a holder to allow us to demo our work and other Java examples (not necessarily our work). The launcher will either run methods to launch an application or will find a class's main method and invoke that.
In all cases, the other applications open up their own JFrames, separate from my launcher (this is a good thing). The problem is that, in general, the other JFrames are set to EXIT_ON_CLOSE. This means that if the user closes the second window, everything will close.
Is there anyway to prevent this from happening? I'd like either a way to say that my JFrame is the only one that can exit the program when closed, or to say globally that JFrames can't exit on close, and then re-work my initial frame so that it is still able to exit.
Note that changing all the other applications so that they do not include the EXIT_ON_CLOSE line is not an option (several of the applications we have the right to use, but not the right to modify, for instance).
Any thoughts?

Edit: I found I can use Frame.getFrames() instead, but unfortunately I've discovered this doesn't solve my problem. One of the applications is listening to window closing and is calling System.exit(0) itself, and is not using EXIT_ON_CLOSE as I previously thought. So I think that launching a new JVM may be the only option.... Any advice on how to do this? I'm a little stuck with the ProcessBuilder stuff above.

I guess I was thinking this as a process-oriented question (I had already been thinking of the "different JVM" tactic), but the other option was to think of it as a pure-swing problem, like your solution above. Guess I should have just cross-posted -- everyone loves that! ;-)

We have a common scenario (I think this is common for SAP ECC in general) where we have 2 tables, *_ATTR (Attributes) and *_TEXT (descriptions). We extract these using extractors.
Initially when we tried to place 2 in a dataflow, we got an error saying 'Only one Extractor source is allowed in a data flow'.
To work around this, we created 2 embedded dataflows and everything seems to work fine. But when I do a validate all, I get the error:
[Data Flow:DF_ODS_MD_WBS_ELEMENT] Only one Extractor source is allowed in a data flow. (BODI-1116145)
Should I be worried ? My gut feeling is this is a bug in the validate all function, but I could be wrong. Everything seems to run fine, so is it safe to ignore this ?
This currently effects about 5 dataflows, but we have about 40 more to implement like this, so I don't want to get it wrong.

in the example doc.
Add a root node to the xml and you should be ok.

I have been trying to transfer some different movies from my PC to my IPad, but they are not showing in the "movie" folder. I have sync'd the movies (these are mp4 files) that I wanted transfered, but only one is showing in the folder. There are 13 other movies in the folder that have the ICloud symbol in the corner of their picture. I understand that I can pull those movies from ICloud any time I want to watch them, but I want to watch the ones that I've just sync'd with my IPad. How do I find them? After I checked the movies I wanted, I "applied" them and watched it sync and copy the wanted movies to my IPad. Now what? Thanks.
There are some good programs that you could use to convert the format, Handbrake or Mpegstreamclip are two good free ones. Convert them to MP4 and then try importing them again.

I recently bought a MacBook Pro, and I figured it would be pretty simple to move my iPhone to sync with iTunes on the Mac from iTunes on my pc, afterall it is the same program and both are designed for the iPhone.
I have been successful in getting the Contacts and Calendar to sync, but the Music, Applications, Video and a few other things give me this message when I check the sync box:
"The iPhone is synced with another iTunes library. Do you want to erase the iPhone and sync with this iTunes library? An iPhone can be synced with only one iTunes library at a time. Erasing and syncing replaces the contents of this iPhone with the contents of this iTunes library."
Obviously, I don't want to erase everything. Actually, I don't care about Music, Videos, Podcasts or Ringtones as I don't have any, but I do care about Photos and Applications. Actually Photos I can reload too, but I don't want to loose the apps I have purchased with the iTunes App Store.
I even tried going back to the PC and unchecking the Sync boxes on it, hoping this might disassociate it from the phone, but now even on that PC I get the same message.
How do I disconnect phone from the old iTunes and be able to sync it to the new iTunes? This should be simple right?I made an appointment with a Mac Genius and I will say that while it was better than getting to talk to India on a poor quality phone call it was just about as helpful. Why won't data merge allow more than one data source at a time?
I need to number tickets, 8 up on a tabloid page, in InDesign (CS5)
I have found out how to use data merge, but it won't allow me to select more than one data source at a time, therefore, making me use 800 sheets of paper instead of 100. That's not acceptable!! Is there a way to merge the pdfs if I make 8 different ones in the places they need to be? Each file that I export will have 100 pages, so is there a way to merge the files to put all eight tickets on each sheet, sequentially? This is driving me nuts!!!!!!!Past users have solved this frustrating problem. You can find their solutions with a Google search like "InDesign data merge multiple sequential items on one page" without quotes.
