Only other storage

Hello,
I use a Mid 2011 MacBook Air with iOS 10.7.5.
I recently got the notification on my macbook air that my "small disc space" is full.
I checked my About this Mac -> Storage file and it shows that I use 59.81 GB of my 60.7 GB Flash Storage for Other and every other format (Audio, Movies, Photos, Apps, Backups) show Zero KB.
I clearly have photos in my library and songs in my itues folder and therefore no idea what this means.
Second thing that confuses me is the fact then when I open my /volumes folder it shows MacintoshHD and MobileBackups. The Macintosh HD file is 1 byte big and the MobileBackups file contains the omelette 59.81 GB occupied space I mentioned above. Is that right?
I hope you can help me.
Sincerely,
Nico

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
          iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation—not the mythical 10%, 15%, or any other percentage. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ignore any other messages that appear in the Terminal window.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Lumia 620 and other storage problem

    Hi,
I own a L620 and I'm having a lot of problems with the "Other" storage. Currenty it is occupying 2GB. I have reflash it and hard reset it a lot of times but it always keep growing...
Is there any fix? What can I do?
I'm thinking in but another mobile phone because of this...

Have you tried copying many files to the intrenal storage? this should make the phone release space from other storage and once freed it will remain so. After this you can simply remove the files you copied.
Otherwise a reset would be the only thing I can think of. This is an OS issue and it's MSFT who will (and should) be fixing this.

I also ran into a problem when the "other" has grown to nearly 7 gigabytes in about two weeks of periodic use.
If it's cache and temporary space for applications, sorting, and other things - how the system adjusts its?
Under what conditions is it decreasing?
For example, if the "other" has grown to 10 Gb or even more, and I was left with only 7 Gb free capacity, the only way to regain the 10 GB - this is reset and recovery? It's not a very convenient way...

  • "Other" Storage taking up too much space

I have a macbook pro that's almost 2 years old now. When I checked storage, it said I have 187GB of Other storage. How can I find out what these files are? My HD seems to be running out of space. And Others is the only thing left for me to check.

Other is just that; everything besides the categories listed.
OSX, it's work files, caches, logs, etc.
Everything in user accounts other than the categories listed, such as documents, spreadsheets, emails, contacts, etc.
See Lion's Storage Display for details.

  • ATP check avoid block other storage location

    Hi Gurus,

  • Need Inspection lot creation at only one storage location level - QA07

    Hi,
I have shelf life expired material at different storage location. When ever i run QA07.System generates inspection lot for all storage location. But I want to process the inspection lot for only one storage location. Please guide me how can we map this reqmnt.
Thanks in advance for your relevent response.
    Thanks & Regards
    Kundan Kumar

    Hi,
Next inspection date is maintained at the batch level, not at the storage location level.
You can suggest the following solutions if it is feasible in your business scenario.
Scenario 1: Batch is inwarded in one storage location"A" & stored for some time, then it is transfered to other storage loactions B & C (like production storage locations).
In this case suggest to transfer the batch to storage loactions B & C just one or two days before the actual consumption of the batch & also keep the opening period  in QA07 sufficient days (between 10-15 days), so that the sytem will create the inspection lot in one storage location "A" . Since the batch is still not transfered to B & C, the system will not create inspection lots in B&C.
Scenario 2: Batch is inwarded in all the storage locations with the same batch number.
In this case suggest to inward the same bacth with different batch numbers, keeping the all other characteristic values same
    With Best Regards

  • I have paid for Creative Cloud membership Photographers Plan but only 2gb storage is showing in my apps

Why is only 2gb Storage showing for my Creative Cloud account when I have paid for the Photography plan and should be entitled to 20gb?

The new Creative Cloud Photograph plan and Photoshop Photography Program are two different plans with different entitlements. The Photoshop Photography Program was a limited time offer and the Creative Cloud Photography plan is a permanent offering.
Why are the offerings in Creative Cloud Photography plan different from the Photoshop Photography Program? For example, the new plan has 2 GB of storage when PPP offered 20 GB. Also, the original PPP offering provided users with a Behance pro membership, which CCP does not.
Are you sure you do have the old program? Can you check on your order...

  • Why does other storage build up so fast?

I just did a complete restore and back up yesterday, 'cuz I had no storage space remaining.  I have no movies, no music, barely any photos or apps installed.  After the restore I freed up almost 9 GB out of 12 GB of storage space.  The only thing that I have used the iPad for since is to watch YouTube and surf with Safari.  So, why have I accumulated over half a GB of other storage already?
    THanks!

    Hi Bubba314,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
You are able to view how much each app is taking up storage space, which can help you determine what is taking up space on your iPad.  Take a look at the information in the article below for more information.

  • 1.93 Gb of Other storage

I've been having trouble converting a couple of videos from quicktime to iPad format. I thought the conversion worked but when I tried to play them on the iPad they wouldn't play. I'm going to redo the conversion so that isn't really my question. But after I deleted the two videos that wouldn't play from my iPad it seemed as if the "Other" storage jumped up quite a bit. I'm worried that the space for the movies didn't all get reclaimed. As I recall Other storage used to be under 1GB but now its 1.93. One of my goals is to squeeze as many movies on the iPad as I can for a long trip so every GB counts.
I realize its possible I was mistaken about how much Other space was allocated in the past but I don't think so. I'm guessing my only option would be to restore the iPad. If I do that since everything is backed up on my Mac I won't loose any iBooks or Apps correct? Is that my only option? Am I correct that 1.93Gb for Other storage (out of 64) is a lot?

Thanks, I thought it was a lot. I just remembered the "hard reboot" option from the documentation (holding down the home and sleep/wake buttons at the same time). I did that and it reclaimed the space! Now Other is back down to 426Mb which is more or less what it was. thanks.

  • "other storage"?

My iphone 4g has 9GB of "other" storage - what is this and how do I get rid of it? DiskAid doesn't work with my operating system. I have tried restoring but I am reluctant to do a complete reset.

You are probably using (a lot of) apps which download stuff like YouTube downloaders and UC browser. All these downloads are stored there and they can only be removed through the respective apps.

  • "Other" storage 261GB, how can I reduce this?

I have a MacBook Pro early 2008 2.4GHz with 4GB memory and a 500GB hard drive, running Mountain lion 10.8.
When I entered the "Storage" section in "About This Mac", I found out that 261GB are in some yellow bar called "Other", and another 85GB are in the "Backups" category. This is srtrange because I don't have any backups on my computer, and I've never backed up my computer using time machine or any other software.
44GB are movies, apps, photos, etc...
I ran the OmniDiskSweeper and it only found 137GB in my hard drive. That means it didn't find 255GB of storage.
How can I reduce this "Other" storage? and where can I find those backups?
    Thank you,
    YanivWolf.

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved. ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. The application is in the folder that opens. ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid. After installing ODS in the Applications folder, drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. When you're done with it, quit it and also quit Terminal.
