Only right speaker working when doing audio on iChat...!

Hello,
I just got the new MacBook Pro and when I use the audio features of iChat the audio of the person I am talking to only comes out of the right-hand side speaker! Other sounds come out of the right and left, such as message alerts, and my speakers otherwise are working fine. Only when I engage someone in an audio chat does the sound from their end come out only on my right speaker...
Any ideas anyone?!
Chris M.

Hi CM!
That is normal when video conferencing with the Macbook pro. The microphone is located on the left hand side, and to reduce feedback the left speaker is muted when conducting a video chat.

This being the Mac mini forum, I naturally presumed you were asking about a mini. But in any case, there's only speaker in an iPhone as well.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It sounds like a hardware failure. I'd give Apple a call or make an appointment with the guys at the genius bar at your local Apple store if you have one nearby.
Apple is liable for your repairs, so it will be free.

  • Only right speaker working while chatting

While using a chat program, e.g. Skype or Google Hangout, the left speaker turns off (MBP Retina 15")!
The left speaker still works for other simultaneously running tasks, like music, but is off for the chat app.
Therefore it has nothing to do with the speaker balance in Settings panel (which btw is set to middle).
As you know the microphone is enclosed in the left speaker, why some think it is logic to close the left speaker while an app needs the microphone to avoid echo.
But this is not true. All of the chat programs, like Skype and Google Hangout do have echo reduction in its software and does not depend on the computer hardware. Apple should not need to close the left speaker because the microphone is too near. To prove this I have used Skype and Google Hangout in Windows/Bootcamp and there both the speakers are enabled, as should, and without causing echo to the other person!
This means it is OSX software fault/feature/bug that closes left speaker while an app is accessing the microphone! How to solve this? It should not be like this and is proven not necessary.

    I have a 2009 MBP.
Same behavior you just described when using internal speakers.
Seems logical to me that left speaker should be shut down while accessing mic due to proximity.
When running on headphone port, external speakers, both speakers active.
This also seems logical, and it would be the user's responsibility to set reasonable distances.
It may be possible to force left speaker on using Audio MIDI Setup utility, if you really want to.
Otherwise, if you're just looking for more sound from right internal speaker while using Skype, go with Boom app, available from the App Store for around $10. Works great.
BTW, new retina models have WAY better speakers and out-of-the-box volume capability.
    Hope this helps.

  • Why does only my right speaker work?

I have had an Iphone 4 & a 4S. With both phones, only the right speaker works. Can anyone tell me why?

That's because the left "speaker" is actually a microphone. The right one is a speaker. Kind of weird... but there's nothing wrong. It's so you can talk on the phone

  • I am trying to print labels from my address book, and when I change it to have the first names first, only some names work.  Does anyone know what the problem is or how to fix it?

I want to print labels from my address book, but when I try to put first names first, only some will work.  Does anyone know why this is happening and how to fix it?

    Hi MollyPhloot07,
I'm glad you found the coupons.com app and you might also want to take a look at the GroceryIQ app from the same company.  Please note that at this time, printing is only support from iPad to HP wireless inkjet printer.  That's most likely the reason why your Canon isn't displaying when attempting to print.  The other way to go might be emailing the coupons you want to your email address, then open that email and print from a conventional desktop or laptop computer.
    Hope this helps!

You can try cleaning the headphone jack. However, I suspect that th headphone jack needs replacement.

  • Only Right Earphone Works

Just today, after having my shuffle for about 6 months, I can hear out of the right earbud but the left one doesn't work. Sound comes out of it once in a while so it goes on and off. Believe me it's not the headphones because I've tried several headphones and it's the same problem. Even with my speakers, the right speaker works but not the left one. Sometimes it works if i don't touch the iPod but that kinda stinks. It is fully charged too. If anyone has the same problem or has an answer to it please post.

I think I have found out what's wrong with the headphones. (I know this might sound a little disgusting) I think the sound is blocked by earwax. I discovered that you can still hear the sound if you turn the headphone around. I will see if I can clean them somehow.
Edit: Wohoo! It works! Soap and water=Working Apple In-ear headphones! God, why didn't I think about this before? (They have been "broken" in over a month now)

  • When I plug in headphones or use audio jack only one speaker works.

I have an iphone 4g.  When I plug in headphones only one side works.  When I plug into my car audio jack...only one car speaker works.

There is only one speaker, the other side is the microphone.

  • Dell laptop headphone jack does not work when playing audio and video in Firefox 27

My problem is similar to the one posted in this thread: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/986978?esab=a&s=laptop+headphones+don%27t+work+with+firefox&r=2&fpa=1&as=s
I believe it has little to nothing to do with extensions.
I have just installed Firefox 27 on the Dell Inspiron 3520 laptop of a friend. She is an unsophisticated user who has a computer for email, simple web browsing, and watching YouTube and other online videos. Because she frequently seems to end up with junk on her machine, I wanted to switch her over to Firefox so I could install ad and script blockers that would hopefully slow down the frequency of adware and malware roosting in her system.
The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 3520 with an Intel celeron CPU (64-bit), running Windows 8. There are standard end-user applications installed (Adobe Reader, VLC Media Player, etc.), but no tweaking utilities, etc. The audio drivers are Cirrus Logic High Definition Audio.
I've been troubleshooting the laptop today trying to track down why the integrated speakers continue to work when the headphones are plugged in, with no sound coming through the headphones. Because I had run a series of virus / malware / adware scans just before installing Firefox, I thought I had mistakenly deleted some system audio files.
It finally became clear after toggling multiple settings, playing with Windows and Dell sound settings, and experimenting, that the headphone audio jack still works as it should in the system itself (for example, playing videos through VLC Media Player) and in Internet Explorer. It is only in Firefox that plugging in the headphones does not send audio through the headphones nor cut out the integrated speakers.
Sometimes there is a silencing of the integrated speakers for a few seconds, but then the audio kicks in again. (I am using YouTube and a certain movie streaming website to test the audio).
However, if the headphones are plugged in before starting the videos, the sound comes through the headphones, but unplugging the headphones, then reinserting them, stimulates problem again. Not only that, but then in YouTube the video will stall and can't be restarted until the page is reloaded.
Again, this is a fresh Firefox install of less than 24 hours, with only Adblock, Adblock Plus Pop-up Addition, Flashblock, and NoScript installed. There are no themes installed and most of the Options are the defaults that are set upon installation.
I have both disabled the add-ons and uninstalled them entirely before testing the headphone funtionality. In both instances the problem persisted. I've also uninstalled and let Windows re-install the Cirrus audio drivers.
Does anyone else have any insight into this problem, and any potential solutions other than "start in Safe Mode" and "reset Firefox"?

Firefox can switch audio devices within ~ a + or - 10 minute period or so (Just a guess). At which point it latches onto the audio device and will never change until the entire process is shutdown (read last paragraph, there is an exception)
Ive had this problem for a few months now, at least. And I switch back and forth from my sound system and my wireless USB headset.
If anything will fix this i believe it would be disabling "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" in the properties of your default audio device, but i doubt it. I think this is an issue regarding the code in firefox itself.
I'd like to see this turned into a default feature, being able to disable and enable the ability to stay on whichever device was the default at the time of launch, or to always play on the current default device, even if its changed. That or being able to choose a specific device/devices (WOULD LOVE TO THIS).
Other than that I dont really have a solution, and I kind of doubt anyone will unless its addressed in the next update.
Oh I thought of one solution that doesnt require restarting firefox, disable the current audio device and the sound will automatically switch to the next available device. Or possibly when a new device is introduced?? I havent done much testing on the matter though. This is just my best guess based on my personal experience with firefox.

  • Why does my iPhone 4 . only 1 speaker works???

Does anybody know why.  And how can I fix that?

There is only one speaker on the iPhone 4 - the other side is a microphone.

  • Only Left Speaker working in MacBook

Brought laptop into Apple store to replace screen and after I got home when listening to music or watching a movie only the one speaker works. What should I do?
    Thanks

I'm experiencing a similar problem, if not the same, on an Inspire 2.1 3300. Granted, they're great speakers, but the right speaker--well, the one in the right speaker woofer port--is shorting out, and now provides three types of sound: functional, breaking up, and very very quiet audio. If I move the speaker cord around, it often provide better results. I'll assume the problem is in the speaker itself... No cut wires and such.
