Only showing one program at a time?

I used to be able to have firefox open behind the word program I was working on, then click to the firefox to do a quick search (would go on top of word document, but word doc could still be seen) then I could click right back to the word document & vice versa. All of a sudden when I click word only the word will open & hides firefox. When I open firefox it makes the word document disappear! How to fix this!?!?!

You can stretch one window horizontally and one vertically so it's a little bigger than the other one, then click on the window behind the window to make it active. You can also just click on the icon of the desired app in the dock.

Screen/Desktop Only showing one program at a time...

My mom called me in to look at her iMac earlier today. She said she was moving her illustrator window off to the side when all of the sudden it was "sucked" away to the left side of the screen. Now when she tries to bring up more than one window for different programs, it will only show windows from one program at a time. I have no clue what she has done and can't seem to find a way to fix this... Does anyone know what she has turned on and how can I turn it off?

sounds strange. I would try resetting dock and spaces preferences. delete the file homedirectory/library/preferences/com.apple.dock.plist and log out/in. your dock, spaces and exposé will be reset to the defaults.

My Viewing area only shows one photo at a time now :(

Yesterday I noticed that my viewing area only shows one photo at a time. It used to display thumbnails of all the photos in the selected event - or library. Now, I'm forced to scroll down and view them one at a time or go into edit mode to see some thumbnails across the top of the screen.
Did I accidently do this? Was it part of an OS update? (I've been away for a month and just don't think I did anything to cause a change...) Can anyone tell me how to view all the thumbnails in the viewing area again?
I'm using iphoto 08 version 7.1.5 (378)

Only opening one program at a time?

I was wondering if there is a way to restrict a program so that only
one instance can be opened at a time. I have two pieces of motion
control software that control the same piece of equiptment (one is for
maintenance and one is for normal operation). I would like to
make sure that only one of the programs can be opened at a time.
I thought of putting them into a single program with a tab structure,
but that suggests that you can switch between the tab, and I don't want
to allow that. I also thought of having a pop-up when the program
first launches that askes which program you want to run, that way you
can only choose one or the other. But you could still open
two instances of that application, one of each.
The only thing I can think to do would be to use a global variable as a
flag and only allow the program to launch if the flag is off.
However if the program crashed and didn't exit properly the global flag
would be left on and the program wouldn't start.
Does anyone know if there is a good way to do this in LabView?

You're welcome. I first used tabs in LV 6.1, before subpanels were available. I didn't want to run subVIs as popups, as a rule. The filetab was a good solution. The selected page obscures front-panel objects on the other pages, so each page is like a separate screen. I labeled the pages according to function, and the user could switch pages accordingly. Switching tab pages is easier than clicking a button on the main VI's front panel to pop up a VI enabling one function; then clicking "End" to disable; selecting another button on main VI's FP for another popup VI; etc.
But there were certain things I wanted to do without interruption (hardware interactions), so I disabled all pages but the active page as long as the critical task was ongoing. Also, I would disable certain controls even on the active page ("Start" button was disabled until the test was over, etc.). I don't think that strategy violates the spirit of the filetab.
The only trouble was that most of the pages had complicated functionality, so many of them had clusters full of option buttons. User would click one, I'd have to hide the option menu, show a bunch of other controls, etc. Straightforward but tedious. Subpanels make that kind of thing easier, because the VI running in the subpanel is responsible for its own front-panel display. And different people can develop different subpanel VIs at the same time, without too many problems merging.
Anyway, I'm glad your problem is solved. I just tried to run two instances of an LV 7 application under Windows 2000 and I couldn't. So that's good to know.

Finder only shows one application at a time...

Hi all,
Hopefully someone can shed light on my dilemma.
After a system crash today I'm having problems in the Finder.
I can only have one application visible on screen at a time.
When I click the Desktop the Finder and any windows there come forward and the previous application is hidden.
If I'm in Safari and click the iCal icon in the Dock iCal comes forward and Safari is hidden.
Icons on the desktop are visible at all times and can be clicked / opened etc.
The only way to have other app windows on screen is to go to the Application Menu and choose "Show All". Clicking a window in another application hides everything again.
Hide "App Name" / Hide Others are both greyed out and I can't use Cmd-H to hide an app either.
I've deleted prefs for everything I can think of (Desktop, Dock, Finder) and opened most com.apple. prefs up to find a flag that's been tripped somewhere but to no avail.
It's acting like the old Mac OS where you could have this as an option in the General Settings Control Panel (from memory...)
Safe Boot didn't help whilst logging into my other users show none of the symptoms. Obviously It's something in my log in that is causing the problem but I don't know where else to look!
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Edit Appraisals: Notes only shows one row at a time

Under the Employee Review tab of MSS-->Edit Appraisals, when I click to create an appraisal, the appraisal form in our system has areas to add notes. However, in the portal, the area to add notes is only 1 row. It is scrollable, but you can only see one row of text at a time. How can I expand the notes area/editor to show multiple lines of text?

Turns out the configuration is on the R/3 side when setting up the Appraisal. There is an option for number of lines for notes.

My iphoto library is only showing one picture at a time

While working in iphoto today my library browser went from multiple pictures to only one. The library shows 5K plus pictures, but can't budge off the one picture. What's up?

Show one color at a time

right now i am just brainstorming my next art project so i don't really have anything specific (which might make this harder to answer but bear with me)
ok, i am hoping to create a pretty complex peice. lots of shapes and detail, no gradients though.
is there a way to only show one color at a time.... that makes no sense, let me grab an example...
ok, i'll try again, if i was going to do this in illustrator, i would have that gold on top all on one layer. then on top of that i would have the red eyes on one layer. is there a way i can see all the gold but only the gold that will actually show up when i print it? basically like when they do prints, they print one color at a time and it's not like they overlap a bunch of layers. can i do that like on screen?
i guess if i had to i could do it in photohop, make a brush out of the red layer and erase those parts of the gold... but i dont want to do it that way, can i do it in illustrator?

ALWAYS state what version you're using.
It sounds like you simply want to preview color separations on screen. If so, and if you have Acrobat Pro, you can:
1. Save the file as a press-ready PDF.
2. Open in Acrobat.
3. Preview the separations in the Advanced>PrintProduction>OutputPeview dialog.
Understand: "Color separations" means color as it will be sent to the individual printing plates, not individual "colors" you've used in the design (unless the design is entirely spot color). If that's what you want, you can:
1. Select an object of a particular color.
2. Use one of the Select Same commands in the Select menu.
3. Store the selection. (Select>SaveSelection)
4. Object>Hide>Selection (leaving other-colored objects visible)
5. Similarly store selections for each different color. Use the Hide Selection command on which every ones you don't want to see.

Embed pdf in website, show one page at a time, with forward and back controls?

Not sure if this is possible (or if this is the right place to ask), but I need to take a multiple page pdf, embed it in a website so its on the left half of the screen, have it only show one page at a time, and have the forward and back page controls.
Is this possible, and if so, could someone point me in the right direction?

Typically you would save it to a JPeg and post those on the web site. Expecting a PDF to show up depends on the client computer configuration and browser. This is too risky, unless you don't mind getting nasty little notes that it does not work. If you do it with JPegs, then all the browsers I know of can handle it. Then simply put the PDF separately for those who prefer to download the PDF and look at it separately.

Well, I rebuilt the entire workbook... that was a few months ago and so far, the problem hasn't resurfaced. It really wasn't fun to do, but whatever glitch there was in the file, I eliminated it.
I think I should mention that I am using Office v.X, NOT Office 2004. I got a new Intel iMac this week and yesterday when I opened up my files, it opened up the test drive (a JOKE of a program if you ask me) Anyway, some of the very minor issues I had with Office v.X were solved in the 2004 version. (When opening up large multi worksheet files without Excel being already opened, the tabs have white text) Anyway, I am still going to wait for the universal version to come out, but it seems that the newer versions may have fewer glitches (as is to be expected)

I lost my only navigation tool bar, so I can only open one window at a time, and can't use google. Help.

I'm not sure what I did, but I right clicked on my google tool bar (which I use since I can't find the Firefox navigation toolbar) and I somehow disabled it. Now I can only use one window at a time, and if I go to a website, I can't go to another without closing my current one so I can go to my homepage, which is google.

If the Menu Bar is hidden then press F10 or press and hold the Alt key down to bring up the "Menu Bar" temporarily.
Go to "View > Toolbars" or right-click the "Menu Bar" or press Alt+V T to select which toolbars to show or hide (click on an entry to toggle the state).

Try this general troubleshooting procedure:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents the following folder: User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: For Mavericks and Yosemite, go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.

I just spent several hours dealing with this when switching to a new PC. It was extremely frustrating as I knew my files were on my external HD but no matter how many times I copied my old iTunes folder over the files were still missing...because dummy me had forgotten to "unhide folders" on my new PC and my old files were actually stored in a hidden folder created long long ago.
This is how I did it on Windows 7 with iTunes 10
1. Look in iTunes Advanced Preferences to see where iTunes is saving files. (Edit, Preferences, Advanced)
Example: C:/Users/Woildbill/My Music/iTunes/Music
2. Ensure you are able to see hidden files - Control Panel, Folder Option, View, Show Hidden Files
3. Use Your Computer's Search Function to Locate the Missing File (Start, Search, type name of song - I started my search in "My Music" folder but be sure to expand to entire Computer if not found right away)
4. In Search Results, right-click found folder and select properties. This will tell you where the file is actually stored.
5. Use Windows Explorer (right-click start) to navigate to the location of the file. It is likley your other missing files are in the same location.
6. In Windows Explorer, copy the newly located files to the iTumes location from Step 1 and everything should work again.

I am tring to mirror ipad2. I just upgraded to IOS5. Is it an apple TV problem or an Ipad2 problem?
What should I try to fix the problem?

I think i found the solution. I got mine working.
Reboot the iPad by holding down the Home button and power button at the same time for 6 seconds. The screen will turn black, apple logo will appear, and it will restart.
Then restart the Apple TV. (I just unplugged the power)
Then restart your wireless router. (again, I just pulled the plug on it)
After doing that, i tried the mirroring again, and it worked great. As soon as I turned it on, it appeared on my TV and is working very quickly. (well, everything I do on the iPad is delayed on the TV by half a second)

Can only print one item at a time

Hey everyone,
Bit of a Photoshop novice here, use it for DVD covers and labels. I have been using CS3 previously but upgraded to CS5.5 last year. The thing is on CS5.5 I can only print one page at a time even when I input say 20 copies to be printed, only one will print. That goes for the regular printer for printing covers and the disc printer.
I can open CS3 up and right away it will print however many I ask it to.
Is there something I am missing? Something so painfully obvious that it is staring me in the face but I am just not seeing it?

It isn't a printer setting. I have 3 different printers connected to my system and all of them worked with CS3 fine. And when I delete the preferences folder for CS5.1 it works as it should but only once, then afterwards it only prints one copy, no matter how many I ask it to print!
So if it works when the preferences have been removed, then fails to work afterwards, how can that be a printer setting?
I have read elsewhere that others have had similar issues with CS5 and Windows 7.
