Only sone picture icons show previews in Finder

I think it's only since Thursday's most recent security update, but when I open a folder containing pictures, only some of the thumbnails show previews. Others just show a generic thumbnail with the file type instead of a preview (jpeg, Raw, etc.). Some folders show all previews, some show some, and others show none. I've made sure that "show icon preview" is checked. Thanks... chas

Select one of the files that isn't showing a thumbnail. Press Command-I to bring up an Info Window. Click in the icon in the upper left corner of the Info Window. It should show a little focus ring hallow around it. Press the Delete button. Does the thumbnail appear in the Finder window? What about in the Preview section of the Info Window?
If it works, you can select all the files that are not showing thumbnails and press Command-Control-I which will bring up a single (Summary) Info Window for the entire selection. Click on the icon in the upper left corner of the Info Window and press Delete.

Firstly, go to http://iforgot.apple.com and sign in with the ID you use for iCloud. A new password will be sent to your associated email address.
If that doesn't work, for example because it's going to an address you can't access, then you will have to contact Support. Go to https://expresslane.apple.com ; click 'See all products and services' at the bottom of the page. In the next page click 'More Products and Services, then 'Apple ID'. In the next page select 'Other Apple ID Topics' then 'Lost or forgotten Apple ID password' and click 'Continue'.

  • Only some buddy icons showing

One of my users has only a couple of his buddy icons showing up in iChat. The rest of us show as a generic user. View buddy icons is turned on. Thoughts?

    Hi,
Providing the Buddies have Buddy Pics themselves then his iChat should be seeing them.
If he has the AIM Screen name  and has added  "Real Name" in iChat then he will have an Address Book entry for that person.
The Address Book will this tend to display the Buddy icon/pic from iChat (if there was/is one).
In iChat if you highlight a Buddy then do a Get Info (CMD and i Keys together) you do get an option about which pic you can use.
The Default is the one from the iChat servers, with the one from the Address Book being "next" although you can also chose one and "Set" it permanently.
I run an app called Little Snitch which will tell you which ports and IP address an App will try to connect to.
As well as the Login server iChat connects to a Buddy pic server.
Any change this is being blocked ?

  • Blue screen at start up, only few top icons showing at top

This is the white Macbook Intel with Snow Leopard installed.  One thing is the hard drive is very full only 2 GB opened.
At startup after the apple, the screen turns blue and the mouse works. At the top of the screen on the right are a few icons, spotlight, battery and a couple others.
The Wi-fi box comes up saying something about none of the networks available and I can hit OK. It leaves a Ghost image of any dialog boxes that do appear. Also the Restart / Sleep / or Shut Down dialog box does come up.
I tried to backup the HD using Restore with Disk Utility and it wouldn't let me "Error HD is a Read Only disk"
so I started in single mode and tried the commands to fix it but that didn't work either.
I zapped the pram and actually got part of the dock to show up.  and could take a screenshot.
I have no idea where it went since I can't see the hard drive or any other files.
Here is what I used to try to fix the permissions using single mode:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    /sbin/mount -wu /
    /bin/chmod 1775 /    < I also tried 777 and 755
    /bin/sync/
    exit
I would love just to make a backup of the drive to save all the files and then install a new drive or reinitialize the one in it.
Would anyone have any suggestions?  Thanks for taking the time to read!

    Hi-
Jean Baptiste mentioned that he removed extensions for the drivers.
Removing a conflicting driver is fine as long as the driver specific for the card installed remains.
In this case, I think it may have been a corrupt driver, rather than a conflicting driver.
Radeon drivers in OS X have a good track record of compatibility, and such driver conflict is not a historically common occurrence.
Hard drive maintenance with Disk Warrior is the best way to correct corrupt files, unless bad RAM is corrupting the files.....
In your case, it shouldn't hurt anything to remove the Radeon 8500 drivers.
Could it be the driver extensions that are preventing a proper boot. The monitor displays perfectly in safe mode so I don't understand why it would be the video card.
Booting to Safe mode unloads drivers. Only very basic core graphics rendering drivers are loaded.
No Quartz/Quartz Extreme, no Core Image, no 3D acceleration, etc.
This doesn't tax a graphics card.
Failure to boot, or failure of graphics when drivers are loaded are due to one of two things- corrupt drivers or failing components on the graphics card.
A reinstall of the OS can rule out the first.
Installing a different graphics card is the only way to rule out the second.
Before buying a new card, I would try a fresh OS.
Installing a new OS on a separate drive, and booting to that is an easy way to test.

  • Click on pictures and I only see the picture icon

Once you click on the picture icon and select all, the pics aren't showing only the picture icon. Also, the pictures have quadrupled butonly a few will open. please enligten me

You have an extended desktop.  If you move the mouse pointer off the edge of the MBPs screen it will appear on the TV.  Likewise you can drag windows from one screen to the other.  At present the MBPs screen is the primary display.  To make the TV the primary display open System Preferences ➜ Displays ➜ Arrangement.  You will see a diagram of two screens with a small bar at the top of the smaller of the two screens.  This small bar represent the menu bar on your display.  Drag the small bar to the top of the larger of the two screens in the diagram and then the menubar and dock will appear on the TV, making it the primary display and the MBP the secondary display in the extended desktop.

  • Icons not showing up in Finder

I have a strange problem: Saving files on my desktop (for example, but not limited to, saving attachments from my email application), there's no icon showing up in Finder.
I can see the files if I go into an application and open the files from there, but not directly in the Finder.
The next time I reboot the files show correctly on my desktop.

Ah... that'll be it then, they are 512 x 512. well i guess that bugs been hanging around for quite some time now, anyone got any ideas if anyone's trying to fix it? i guess making 128 x 128 icons wouldn't be the end of the world but it does seem like a step backwards.
one thing that still confuses me... an icon file contains icons of all sizes, why does cover flow not select the right size icon to display?
thanks for that info V.K., much obliged.
    regards, Pablo.

  • Cover Flow won't show JPG preview, only generic JPG icon

    Hello,
For some reasons, I don't see JPGs in Cover Flow mode. I can see them in Quick Finder no problem.
I tried the following and toggle the on/off the feature without success: Go to Finder, open a window, and click View>Show View Options. From there, CHECK "Show Item Preview," then click "Use as Defaults."
I exported photos from iPhoto into my desktop but I get the same result. Only generic jpg icon.
BTW, PDFs are fine, excel, word are all fine....
    Any idea?

    A reboot solved the problem.
I guess this is the workaround for now...

  • Showing preview column in icon mode crashes finder

Issue: Finder crashes and my icons on my desktop disappear then reappear when attempting to view a file of any type in icon mode with "show preview column" selected in "Show View Options".
I don't recall any recent updates or any changes to my G5. I can open a file in its application program (i.e. a .jpg opens in Photoshop) if I double click it quickly enough before Finder crashes. The only way I can get icon view not to crash Finder is by unchecking the "show preview column" box in "Show view options". I like the preview option and would very much like to get it back.
Any help in this matter would be appreciated.

Sorry, no idea how I missed your reply back on the 29th!
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.

Repair Permissions before & after re-install, then reboot again each time.

That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.

  • Organizer not showing previews or Thumbnails.  It is only showing hour glass icons. Windows 8.1 OS.

I purchased and installed Elements 13 on a Windows 8.1 PC.  I also have the Photographers version of CC (Bridge, Lightroom, and Photoshop).  In Elements, I imported my pictures, but they are not displaying the previews in the Organizer window.  They showed up at first, but they are converted to hourglass icons when I try to scroll through the pictures.  I tried to print pictures, but the picture package function does not work.  The hourglass icon shows up there as well, and nothing prints.

I'd delete the preview cache and rebuild - that may help (or it may not).
To do so, exit Lightroom, then delete .lrdata folder alongside .lrcat file.
PS - delete entire .lrdata folder, but do NOT delete .lrcat file or anything else.
(if it has 'Smart Previews' in the filename, don't delete it - just delete the other one).
Then, re-open Lightroom and rebuild previews using Library - Previews menu (optional, but probably worthwhile).
If no better, then you have an system/app problem as opposed to a preview-data problem.

Not all content types are available in all countries - in each country Apple can only sell what they are licensed to (and in some cases what a country's laws allows them to). A list of what is available where is shown on this page : http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3599

  • Slide show out of Finder, pictures in disorder

"hey, let's what the pictures on your big iMac screen!",
and so we attached the USB sticks filled with pictures from a PC notebook: the files appear, the "ICON-Preview" was perfect, just to press <apple-A> and start the slide show from the finder window! Oops! The slide show didn't follow the the correct order by the file name. Pretty messy because 3 events were mixed.
Later on I copied all files on the Mac HD and tried again, but same result. I found a "workaround" (I hate workarounds!!): When I started from the Finder-Window-MultipleColum-Mode then the slide show followed the selected by-file order.
Anything else I missed or I can do better?

Your use of Column View is the only solution I've seen for this problem.
I use the freeware Mike’s Thumbnailer @ http://homepage.mac.com/mdewalt/iWeb/Site/Home.html for slide shows. It also has a feature where you can add music to the slide show.

    Hi Giorgiovdb!
Unfortunately I cannot help you; all I did was test for you.
I did an upgrade over my Lion install with Mountain Lion which went fine. I just tested icon view in my Finder on different files and folders and here in my installation all stays fine; good readable like in column view!
The only thing you might try is change your Font in Finder and set it back to the original afterwards!
I quickly Google'd how to change fonts in the Finder as appearantly there's no obvious gui item for it:
    http://usermanifest.wordpress.com/2012/07/06/osx-finder-title-bar-font/
Try to see if it brings you anywhere!
At my post all fonts act normal after my upgrade to Mountain Lion; I don't do a clean install unless I really have to!
    Goodluck!

  • Disable / Turn off Thumbnail / Icon Preview in Finder?

Can't find any new/recent posts to solve this issue. I want to disable/turn-off the little icon preview in finder.
I have to access a lot of images on a server at work. Image files(jpeg, eps, tiff, psd, ai, ect) that are typically 50MB and higher. So you can only imagine the amount of lag I get and the time I waste every time I click on a folder in list view.
Is there any way to disable it? Just have it show a standard icon file type instead of it loading 100+ 8MB images in little tiny icons?
I've already tried the View -> Show View Options -> unchecked 'Show icon preview' and applied it as 'Use as default'
Its turn off for all folders but it is still loading the mini icon preview.
(I'm on a Mac Pro - Mountain Lion)

I've tried reinstalling Mavericks and I'm still having this issue. I'm considering wiping my drive and going back to Mountain lion. Qucktime player in Mavericks seems to suck. I'm having several other issues playing back older quictime files. Most play in Quicktime 7 but a lot have no quicklook previews. The sheer volume of prores files I shoot makes this extremely inconvenient for me. How can Apple not support their own Codec????

My images will not show in the Finder Pictures folders, but just display as jpeg thumbnails.  I have to open each one to see what photo it is.  This has just recently started to happen.

I made sure the 'Show Icon Preview' box was checked.  This is about all I can do, really, Frank, as i don't know enough about the workings of these machines to start fiddling about.
Strangely the images show as previews in some folders, yet not in others, even though they come from the same sources (my camera and my phone).

  • Problem with icon preview in finder

Lately I have noticed the odd picture would not display in preview in finder.  But today all of the jpg, pngs, and gifs in finder wont display, all I am getting is the default system image. Now I have show preview ticked in view options. I have deleted the finder plist file as suggested on a search for the problem online. But I am still having the problem.
The only images that show up as previews are the ones that have been created or edited through photoshop.  But as I have thousands of pictures on my HD i cant run them all through photoshop.
Can anyone help or point me to a thread with a similar problem?  Thanks in advance for any sugestions.
Oh I run Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on an intel imac

Download and run all of the free OnyX checks, maintenance and then cleaning and reboot at the end.
(Just one thing, don't delete the log files)
    http://www.titanium.free.fr/
Also if any of the initial drive checks gives a error, report back and backup your files off the computer (Not TimeMachine) and disconnect.
This will flush your system and let things rebuild, test things etc., nothing gets deleted but you should backup your files off the machine regardless.
