Only using WiFi for connecting to the internet

I'm hoping to get a Pay & Go iPhone in January. O2 provide unlimited browsing for the first year, but after that you have to pay £10 per month, or you can opt out. I would want to opt out, and just use the internet in free WiFi hotspots (like College, for example).
Do any applications (like Mail, for example) use the internet of their own accord, or will I only be charged if I actually use them (outside of a WiFi hotspot)?
Furthermore, is there a way of disabling internet access over 3G, EDGE, and GPRS?
Thanks,
Will

The answer to all your questions is no. Unless you put the phone in Airplane mode it will use whatever data connection is available - so if you are on wifi and it hiccups, you will use GSM/Edge.
If you open mail, safari, maps, weather or anything else, it will try to do a data connection and it doesn't care what is available.
Some carriers will put a data block on the phone - at least in the US, and they way the phone will NOT do data over GSM/Edge/GPRS. I am not sure if O2 offers this, but you can ask. Just make sure to ask if Texting (SMS) is still available if you care about that.
10 pounds per month is about half what we pay in the US.

Can I use only WiFi to connect to the internet, like web surfing and downloading?
I'm not in the US so I don't want to use the service provider's EDGE, because it is too expensive.

If you don't have a BlackBerry Data Plan, you will not have access to any of the BlackBerry data features and applications.
Some third party applications (like Pandora radio or BerryWeather) will connect via WiFi.
The Opera Mini browser will work, and can use GPRS settings, if you set the TCP connection for your current service provider.

Yes, I could connect them by ethernet if all I wanted to do was transfer files, but I would like to network them so I could use wireless internet.  The machines are not always so close together, I did that to simplify the testing.  With the very slow transfer speeds I am reluctant to move ahead with the internet step.

Yes, that is the Tetheringn or HotSpot option.  Some models have this.  You will have to set up your phone to do this, and your carrier will likely charge you an extra fee for the tethering service.

  • TS4268 I've tried the listed troubleshooting procedures to activate Facetime and iMessage, but no luck. Are there any other options? If it helps, I'm currently overseas and only using WiFi to connect.

        lovethoseleaves,
Oh no! I am saddened to hear that you are having troubles with your MMS pictures. I know that this can be an important thing to be able to do. I appreciate you working with us to get this matter resolved as well. I see that you have spent time working with us, and I know that can also be frustrating. There are a few things we can check though. Are these to any specific numbers or all? A factory reset certainly should've resolved this. We can check into the account set up as well for that if need be. Please share any additional details that you can think of. Thanks.

  • My AirPortExBS n-type will create a network, but not use it to connect to the Internet

I just got a new AirPortExtreme, n-type, and I can create a successful network but cannot use it to connect to the internet.  I can do both with my old APEx, g-type.  I can connect to the internet directly via Ethernet.
I've been in chat all **** day with Comcast, who insist it's Apple's fault, despite all the evidence to the contrary.  They just want an excuse to charge me a setup fee.  Jerks.
    Salient points:
g-type wireless network (while it's useful to tell the two apart, I'll miss the whimsical UFO-shaped device) works.
n-type device will create a network my MacBook can detect, but it can't access the internet.  I got my APExpress in the mail (two days later, even though they were ordered at the same time) today and I haven't tried bridging that in yet, too many headaches already, but I can print wirelessly over the new network when my printer is attached to the square APEBS.
I have power-cycled the **** things almost a dozen times at the behest of my Mac's setup guide and Comcast's chat people.
My best guess is that my modem, because I did not buy Comcast's (jerks) "Wireless Self-Install Kit" is somehow not compatible with the faster AirPort...  though why it wouldn't broadcast at the 2.4Ghz band, at least, I don't know.
I will be thoroughly grateful if you guys could help me out here.  I've never had a problem with any of my Apple products before, so this is a little disturbing.
    Thanks, Jenna

  • Can I use Time Capsule and keep my Telstra router for connection to the internet?

Can I use Time Capsule without changing, to keep my Telstra router for conection to the internet?

You can either bridge the TG or the TC.
For the TC.. I explained it in the previous post.. and it is posted again and again and again.
For the TG782T.. open it directly from a pc.. select configuration wizard and choose bridge.. it is as easy as that.
Then setup pppoe client for the TC with your Telstra username and passwork.
Post again in Whirlpool forum if you have issues.

  • Using iPad when connection to the internet is by ethernet cable

I'm going to be at Oxford this summer and hoped to leave my laptop home and just use my iPad2. There is wifi in the public spaces but to connect to the internet in the dorm, you must bring your own ethernet cable. The second part of my question is that I have the 3G iPad. Is there anyway to make that available in England?

It is the protocol used for most all US cellular service. GSM is the protocol used in Europe. Unless there is a cellular provider in England that can provide CDMA service and is a partner with whomever provides your cell service in the US, then you would not be able to use your cellular capability. This has no effect on your other wireless.

Suddenly, my time capsule will not allow more than one computer to connect to the internet at a time. On the Airport Utility on the internet tab, Connection Sharing is "Off (Bridge Mode)" When I try to change it to sharing an IP address, I get two messages that the beginning and ending DHCP addresses that the DHCP addresses I've entered conflict with the WAN address of my Apple wireless device."

I use a DSL to connect to the internet. The modem is a Westell C90-810030-06. Two things happened in connection with the fail. I upgraded the firmware in both my Time Capsule (connected to the DSL) and the Airport Extreme (connected to my printer--used to extend the network). I also upgraded my Colof Nook to the Android Faux Tablet version. I can't imagine that that is creating some sort of mismatch.
I have now downgraded the firmware on the Time Capsule to 7.4.1 which is what I had before. Fortunately, I found the trick to downloading the older airport utility to find the older firmware. All the older versions disappeared from my computers.
I still have the same problem. Wifi works fine. If a second device connects to the wifi, then it works fine, but the first no longer has a connection.
And my Airport Extreme is not working at all. It cannot be seen by the computer. I tried resetting it. I'm going to connect it by ethernet and downgrade the firmware on it.
I appreciate any help. This is so frustrating.

  • How to use an iPad 2 for web search (via 3G only) while using AirPrint via Airoprt express wifi (NOT connected to the internet)

Heres the setup: I have an IOS 7 iPad 2 that I want to use 3G only for web searches/ emails while using an Airport Express generated wifi bubble (without any connected internett) to print web seraches via airprint to a wifi printer.
The problem: the ipad deafults to searching via the AE's wifi and vainly waits for the non existent interent to connect. It ignores the available 3G internet.
The workaround: a) turn off the AE's wifi, search the web via 3G b) once I have something to print, turn the wifi back on and print via airprint and the AE's wifi to the printer.
The question: Is there a way to turn off the AE's internet access. Using Airport utility, I have tried setting Bridge mode and static IPs to no avail. There is no turn-the-internet-off tick box.
In the ideal setup I would like the ipad 2 to search the web via 3G only (straight away versus waiting vainly for the AE to find it!!) and then print the results via the AE's wifi and airprint without having to toggle wifi on and off all the time.....
    Thanks in advance,
    Bill...

  • Everytime I use firefox to connect to the internet I get an alert saying that firefox could not initialize the applications security component. What does this mean and how do I fix it?

When I use firefox to get on to the web I get the following message everytime: "Alert: Could not initialize the applications security component. The most likely cause is problems with files in your applications pforfile directory. Please check that this directory has no read/write restrictions and your hard disk is not full or close to full. It is recommended that you exit the application and fix the problem. If you continue to use this session, you might see incorrect application behaviour when accessing security feactures." Once I click the "OK button" at the bottom of the alert box firefox starts but does not act right. For instance it will not let me look for software updates. When I click on "Check for Updates" from the "Help" drop down menu I get a message stating: "There were problems checking for, downloading, or installing this update. It pains me to hear about your experience with the Home Phone Connect.  This device usually works seamlessly and is a great alternative to a landline phone.  It sounds like we've done our fair share of work on your account here.  I'm going to go ahead and send you a Private Message so that we can access your account and review any open tickets for you.  I look forward to speaking with you.
