Only want to apply adjustment to one layer

When I apply an adjustment levels layer, all layers below are affected. I only want to apply an adjustment to one layer not all of them. How do I do this?
I am using photoshop CS4
Thanks,
S. Hamsun

To amplify that, an Adjustment layer will affect all layers below it. To restrict the effect to one layer, the adjustment layer must be clipped to the layer below. This can be achieved in CS4 by clicking the icon shown above in the Adjustments panel or Alt-Clicking on the border between the two layers in the layers panel.

    I only want to apply iMatch/iCloud to one of my iTunes playlists, not my entire library. Is that possible?

    Hello efisch81,
    As far as I know, this is not currently possible. It matches the entire library or none of it. For specific playlist syncing, you'll still need to sync traditionally through iTunes for now.

  • How do I set it up to remember my passwords on certain sites if I said no by accident? the tab only allows me to adjust the ones saved. I need to know how to make them if I didn't do so the first time

    I accidently did not save the passwords to some sites I would like to have the password remembered. I went in to try to maybe reset it so that the pop up window would come up again. but it won't let me do it again. How do I get the password to be remembered so I can stay logged in to the specific sites I want to be. I sure hope that made sense.
    Thanks for your help
    Christina

    Also, please try deleting the sites in '''Tools''' ('''Alt''' + '''T''') > '''Options''' > '''Security''' > '''Exceptions...''' (under '''Passwords'''). The sites listed there are those for which Firefox will never remember passwords.

  • CS5 problem Adjustment layers only affect one layer instead of all

    I am getting this problem with Photoshop CS5 I think one of the settings got changed by accident but for some reason I cannot get any of the adjustment layers Levels,Curves etc to affect all layers under them. Instead it just changes the brightness of one layer only which is the one just below the adjustment layer but not all of the others. I use Photoshop for Digital art and I was all of the layers under the adjustment to change the look of the full image instead of just one layer. Is there any way of fixing this problem? I dont know what to do

    I think I know what the problem may be:
    When you're adding a new adjustment layer the following checkbox is coming on by default:
    You probably changed the default for this.  Here's how to change it back:
    Make the Adjustments panel visible by clicking the Window - Adjustments menu.
    Click the little fly-out menu icon at the upper-right.
    Clear the Clip To Layer checkbox.

  • I'm using Lightroom cc, I'm trying to create a develop preset. I'm making changes to one photo that I want to apply to many other photos, one of the changes is to blur the background using the adjustment brush. When I am blurring I am going over the photo

    I'm using Lightroom cc, I'm trying to create a develop preset. I'm making changes to one photo that I want to apply to many other photos, one of the changes is to blur the background using the adjustment brush. When I am blurring I am going over the photo several times, when I go to create the preset the adjustment brush is not an option to check. How do I add the adjustment brush to the develop presets. Thanks Ron.

    The adjustment brush cannot be added to a develop preset.
    If you can replace the adjustment brush with a gradient filter or radial filter, you can add those to a dev preset.
    If a gradient filter or radial filter is not an option for you, you can at least create an adjustment preset to remember your brush settings.

  • I created a watermark in LR4 and it applied to all photos I only wanted one photo marked.

    I created a watermark in LR4 and it applied to all photos I only wanted one photo marked. How can I keep it from adding the watermark to all of my photos?
    I want to be able to add them manually to each photo in a location that I chose so the photo is still visably appealing.
    Thanks!

    I think it's a feature of the Web Module, since it is assumed that you would want the watermark on all images of a web-gallery.
    But, in this context (as always is the case in Lr) you have to take into consideration of how Lr works. Lr never ever changes your originals.
    "Watermark applied" means only that there is a set of data in the Lr catalog that says something like "when uploading the web-gallery the watermark has to be applied to the uploaded JPGs".
    Nothing has been done to your originals - even though they are displayed in te Web Module with the watermark. The orginals are ever unchanged.
    If you go back to the Library Module (within the same Collection) you won't see a watermark.

  • Applying feathering to only one layer

    Hi,
    I'm created a two-part ad.  One of the two parts (on two different layers) has a background image that I would like only the center to show up and the rest I'd like to whiten (about 90% opacity, leaving 10% of the background image visible) using feathering, as described in Feather Selections In Photoshop With Quick Mask
    So, does anyone know how to apply such feathering on only one layer?
    Thanks!
    -Ron

    Create a Layer Mask and apply Feather in the Properties Panel.
    Could you please post a screenshot with the Layers Panel visible?

  • Applying an adjustment layer / or adjustment TO a layer in a grayscale image is NOT happening!

    I'm a long time user of Photoshop, but must admit to being stumped here. I have a very high resolution scanned image from a B&W antique engraving, and I'm trying to "open up" some of the lines to bring out the details in the engraved image while keeping the image as close to the "line art" B&W of the original as possible.
    I have the image now "cleaned up," having taken out the yellow color casts, etc., and have a grayscale 8-Bit image in the Photoshop file.
    I've discovered that I can use an adjustment TO the layer itself, or an adjustment layer on the layer in the grayscale image to take away some of the density and "open up" the line art a little, so it has better details by effectively "choking" the dark lines back to make them less thick and dense.
    Here's the thing, though:
    When I tried making the adjustments via image > adjustments > levels DIRECTLY ON the layer (instead of using and adjustment layer to achieve this), every time I hit the OK button to accept the adjustments I've made that way, the dialog box closes and the layer seems to revert to looking just the same as it did BEFORE I opened the dialog box to adjust the layer!
    When I try making the adjustments by using an adjustment LAYER, and I try to save the Photoshop image as a TIFF file, I find that when I open the saved TIFF image, the layer adjustment I'm seeing in the source Photoshop file has NOT been applied, and the image in the saved TIFF file looks just as dense as the original, unadjusted image in the Photoshop file!
    What am I doing wrong here?  I want to be able to save out that adjusted image as a TIFF file to use in designs, but I cannot seem to save it as a TIFF that actually CONTAINS or reflects these adjustments after having MADE the adjustments!
    Whazzup?!!

    Well, I took the layered TIFF file you gave to me and opened it in Photoshop, reviewed the adjustment layer in there and its effect -- thanks: you get what I was trying to do -- and then saved it out as a flat TIFF image, and when I reopened it, voila!  it looked like the adjustment had indeed been applied.  So this IS a real head-scratcher indeed.
    I've now tried going back to my source file and doing the same thing.  One thing that I notice is that when I do the Save As of the TIFF with the adjustment layer in it (OR the PSD file, for that matter), when I go to Save YOUR file, the Layer Compression Options are grayed out, but when I go to Save MY file, the Layer Compression Options are active.  I've tried now saving both with RLE layer compression AND As a Copy ("discard layers and save a copy"), and neither works.
    I noticed, too, that your file had the layer below the adjustment layer still as a "Background," instead of a named layer, so I went back and applied an adjustment layer to a copy of my TIFF file, leaving the image in its layer as a Background layer, and still this did not work.
    The only other difference I saw between your TIFF file and mine, is that mine contained transparency, as I've silhouetted away a portion of the image to isolate the central image of the scanned engraving. But even when transparency is not a factor (i.e. I go back and start with a flattened, nontransparent image layer of my TIFF file with a single Background Layer, and I apply the adjustment layer to that, I get the compression options grayed out on Save, and STILL the saved TIFF image I get out of it has "reverted" to the unadjusted appearance.

  • Replace one channel by another on only one layer, leaving the others intact?

    Hello. In a CMYK image, I need to turn on only one layer one channel completely into another, while the others remain intact. The M channel (the M on that layer) contains information, but I can't print M in this place. I want to change it into an equal amount of K (or into C, in the present case, or even into a mixture of the two). I know how to do this to an entire image (change into greyscale, duotone or whatever may apply). But since I need this to apply to only one (or a selection of) layer(s), leaving all others intact, this is not an option here. I'm sure there's a way to achive this, but I can't find it. Any advice would be much appreciated.

    bustamant wrote:
    hello, thanks for your replies. As far as I understand, Channel Mixer (i.e., an Adjustment Layer containing a Channel Mixer applied to the layer in question) allows me to reduce one channel to zero,
    You are completely correct up to here...
    Then choose K as the desired output channel at the top of the palette and slide the M (source) slider to the desired value.  You can choose more output channels by going to each output channel in turn.
    The way it works is slightly confusing at first, but in a nutshell, you choose your output channel first, then mixture of sources.  Then move to another output channel and the sources will be at the default position for THAT output channel only.  Each channel has a set of source channels assigned to it.
    Default;  black output channel = 100% black source, 0% CMY
    So your example is black output = 100% black source plus 100% mag source (although I expect you are going to change black source to 0)
    AND magenta output = 0% Magenta 0% CYK source  (no mag output at all)

  • Scripting: One layer to adjust opacity of other layers?

    Hi there,
    i've a lot of layers in my comp which names start with "POINTER_".
    I would need those layers to fade out at the same time.
    But i can't subcomp them or use stencil alpha.
    I'm sure it is possible to do a script on an adjustment layer that would do just that.
    All it needs to do is enable me to do opacity keyframes on that adjustment layer which are then linked to the opacity to all layers starting with "POINTER_".
    I'm not a scripting guy so it would be awesome if somebody could show me how to do that.
    Thanks a lot!
    cheers,
    Chris

    You don't need a script for it; you need an expression.
    You can very easily link properties between layers with expressions. In this case, you would apply an Expression Effect Slider to your null layer (or just use the opacity property of an adjustment layer). Then alt-click the opacity property for one of your layers and use the pick whip to choose the slider effect or the opacity property of your controlling layer. Now, when you change the value of the one layer, the others follow. You can copy and paste the expression that resulted from your pick whip to the other layers. (You can even choose to copy the expression only and then paste that to the rest of the layers.)

  • Apply adjustment layer to different layer?

    Warning: I know just enough to be dangerous. And barely enough to explain myself. I've just managed to create exactly the effect I want, but...
    I have a layer (HEADER) to which I applied adjustment layers (curves and levels) using "Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask". So now, above my HEADER layer, I have the adjustment layers (with linked masks) with the little black right-angle arrow pointing down to my HEADER layer.
    Is it possible to copy these adjustment layers and apply them to a second layer (e.g. FOOTER)?

    Shoot, I knew someone would hone in on those names. This is an image originally created by a design agency. "Header" and "Footer" refer to "swooshes" across the top and bottom of the image. So ignore the meaning of the names...
    And I'm sure I'm overlooking something really simple... OK, I have the HEADER layer at the top of my layer stack. Above it are the Curves and Levels adjustment layers (actually there is a Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer also), with the little black arrows pointing down indicating that the adjustment layer is applied ONLY to the Header layer. (At least I think that's what those black arrows mean.) Cool.
    Then there are about five more layers of other stuff. The adjustment layers don't affect them. Cool.
    Then there is the Footer layer. There are several more layers below the Footer layer. I would like to take all three of those aforementioned adjustment layers and apply them to the Footer layer also. So I duplicate, for starters, the Curves layer. "Curves copy" appears above the original, with it's little black down-arrow. But when I drag it to be above the FOOTER layer, it loses its little black arrow and is now applied not only to the FOOTER layer but also to all layers below it. Not cool.
    Does that help? Thanks for taking me on...

  • Applying adjustment layer to a group of layers

    Is there a method to apply an adjustment layer to a group of layers?
    I have a curtain on one layer of a Photoshop CS4 document.
    I duplicated the curtain twice and repositioned the copies.
    Now I'd like to use an adjustment layer to change the color of my curtains without affecting the rest of the composition (and I can't move the curtains down to the bottom because they need to sit above other elements).
    I tried grouping my 3 curtain layers together and then applygin an Adjustment Layer>hue>colorize - but that's affecting the whole composition.
    And when the layers are grouped, holding ALT while hovering between the adjustment layer and the group does not bring up the special icon that lets you apply the adjustment just to the layer beneath it.
    Would apprecaiate andive on how to apply an adjustment layer to a group of layers.
    (I can go back and apply my adjustment to the original curtain then reduplicate and reposition, but would have to repeat that procedure every time change color preference).
    Thanks?

    Put your layers in a folder, and change the folders blending mode from pass through to normal. You can then put an adjustment layer on the top of the layers in the folder, and it will only affect what is in the folder.

  • Adjustment layer to apply to a previous layer mask

    i want to use a separate adjustment layer (curves) to apply to the previous layer luminance mask only rather than to the layer as a whole -
    possible or no -
    i can't see a way to separate applied curves from the mask -
    ta,
    d

    thanks for the quick replies - here is a more detailed explanation of what i want to do -
    i've made a luminance mask (command/alt/tilde) and applied it to the layer (to apply sharpening in highlights only) - now, i can also apply curves to this mask for a more precise application of the mask - i'm fine with all this - however -
    i'd like to make all of this into an action, still no problem - but i'd like to have the curves (applied to the luminance mask) as a separate layer so that they could be varied after different pictures are put thru the action -
    when i try to make a curve adjustment layer it will only apply to the complete picture + mask layer below - i want it to apply to only the mask so that it is tweakable after the batch action -
    does this make sense now, and if so is it possible, have i missed something -
    thanks,

  • Make only one layer of a video brighter

    Hi,
    I have few layers of videos, I am trying to make only one layer brighter.
    How can I do that?
    Thanks,

    Hmm, select the layer in the timeline, go to the effects menu, scroll down to color correction, in that menu choose brightness and contrast and adjust the brightness to your liking. It will only be applied to that layer.

  • How to make a script treat only tables of one layer?

    Hi guys
    Could anyone  point the way to performing the below code only on one layer in  Indesign CS2?
    I also need to treat tables on "layer1" only.
    with(app.activeDocument){
    for(  storyIndex = 0; storyIndex < stories.length; storyIndex++)
                var myStory = stories.item( storyIndex );
                for (tableIndex = 0; tableIndex <  myStory.tables.length; tableIndex++)
                    //do things here
    This works on the  whole document but how can I ask Indesign to treat only tables in  "layer1". The layer object does not contain the story object, so I cant  adjust the "with" statement above.
    Basically what I need to do is untag all XMLelements within a table of layer but i have given the obove code for simplicity.
    Can anyone guide me on this?
    Thanks

    CS2, huh? If you have not already, you should budget for an upgrade to CS5.5 (or better yet, CS5 right now and get the free CS5.5 upgrade,so you have both, assuming that offer is still outstanding).
    Generally using with is discouraged. It makes it hard to tell what's really going on in your program and is considered bad style [at least by me]. Better to use either a temporary variable or app.activeDocument.stories explicitly.
    Stories do not themselves have a concept of a layer, because they are composed of textFrames and those could be on different layers.
    But let's assume that you care about the layer of the first textFrame in each story.
    Then:
    var
      stories = app.activeDocument.stories,
      storyIndex, myStory,
      tableIndex;
    for (storyIndex = 0; storyIndex < stories.length; storyIndex++) {
      myStory = stories[storyIndex];
      if (myStory.textFrames[0].itemLayer.name === 'layer1') {
        for (tableIndex = 0;
             tableIndex <  myStory.tables.length;
             tableIndex++
          //do things here
    (I also use stories[15] instead of stories.item(15) and declare all vars at the top.)
