Onscreen posterization

In Aperture, and only in Aperture, I get really dramatic posterization in the shadows of my images (both raw and jpg.) The same file, opened in any other application shows a smooth transition. In fact, even if I open the file in external editor from Aperture, the opened file has smooth transitions.
At first I thought I might have an onscreen proofing problem, so I checked that and I am confident that onscreen proofing is disabled. Is there anything else that might be going on to cause display problems? (This happens on both my primary and secondary monitor, if that matters.) Both of my monitors are freshly calibrated w/ xrite hardware.

Sean, I'm right there with you - I'm still having that exact same problem myself.
I've turned off the proofing, cleared the preferences - everything - Yet, I'm still having the same posterization issues myself, still. Once again, It's not on every single photo - but just most of them, particulary the darker ones, but I've had perfectly exposed images (without much darkness) do the same thing.
I've already upgraded to 1.1 as well, but STILL having the same crazy issues.
I did however read on some other Aperture forums & OSX forums, that it's really looking like it's the 'OSX 10.4.6' update that's causing most of these issues - PLUS, many others in other programs. Apparently another issue with the new 10.4.6 update is it's sometimes causing the 'dock' to not open applications 'automatically' (where it does the little 'bounce') - instead, you have to open them by right-clicking on them, and open them manually. Oddly enough, after reading that & about 6 hours later, guess what? - mine started doing it as well.
This is just what I've read in other forums concerning these issues, and most of them seem to be pointing the finger at the OSX 10.4.6 'bug'. Who knows?
At least you're not alone on this one.
Please keep us posted if you or anyone else in here, hears the 'fix' on this one. It sure would be nice to use Aperture to it's fullest potential. For a flagship 'photo imaging' program like Aperture, - 'posterization' is pretty much one of the LAST things one would want to plague a program like this. That's about like saying, "I just bought this new, 12 mega-pixel DSLR camera, but it ONLY shoots in 'sepia' mode, not color - other than that, the camera works great!
I'll let you know if I read or hear of anything alse myself.
*(ps) I went to my local Apple store yesterday & told the people there about this issue & they said they had never heard of it or had any problems like it from Aperture. I took the guy over to one of their powermac G5's & opened a stock image in the external editor (CS2), and on the 3rd try - there it went, right in front of the sales rep. (He couldn't beleive it either!) he made an immediate call to Apple headquarters, & they DID tell him that OSX 10.4.6, WERE starting to get a lot of 'bug' issues reported -worldwide. This also included the 'posterization' issue within Aperture, but apparently, there's a lot more problems going on with 10.4.6, then even we've all heard of.
I just hope that they can get this problem fixed as soon as possible for all of us who are having to deal with this little bug.

  • Bad Posterization With Onscreen Proofing

    Hey Everybody,
I just recently got Aperture and I LOVE it.
I'm only having one problem: I shoot RAW with my EOS 5D and need to output in the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 color space. I know I should have Onscreen Proofing turned on set to sRGB IEC61966-2.1 in order to correctly adjust my images for printing, but when this feature is turned on, the images in the preview pane show SEVERE posterization and poor image quality. Can anyone help me out with this?
    Thanks,
    Nick
iMac Intel Core Duo 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Thanks for the input so far. The color profile I'm
using for proofing is sRGB IEC 61966-2.1. This is
because I don't print at home and my photo lab
requests all files to be in this color profile.
Even if you submit your files in sRGB for printing, using that for proofing will not help you understand what a print will look like, because most printers do not have as wide a color space as even sRGB. That merely helps them not have to do profile conversion before printing.
You need to either get a profile from them, or figure out what printer they use and find a profile for that yourself.
The weird thing is that when I export the image, it
doesn't seem to have that posterization. It's only on
    the preview in Aperture.
I'm not sure why you get this effect, I don't get anything very noticable when I use the IEC61966-2.1 sRGB profile.
If I can think of any reason to proof for sRGB, the only one would be perhaps to see what an image might look like on a web page after exporting to that space. Still you should not see posteization you do not see outside Aperture after exporting.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS2 posterization problem on vignette

I am having a problem with posterization in my image. When I try to vignette my photo (with black) it starts to block up in areas, mostly in the darkest part of the gradient. It ends up not making a smooth transitional gradient and leaves a line where it blocks up. It shows up on the screen as well as on the print. I have a calibrated LaCie CRT 19" monitor, G5 and I am working from digital raw files from a Fuji S2 that are AdobeRGB and also film scans that have done the same thing. What can I do to prevent this? Is it something to do with my G5 or is it the software in Photoshop? If there is any info that left out to help solve the problem please let me know!
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

If it shows up on screen and in print, then issue is with the software.
Adobe has forums. Might try there.
    best wishes

  • IdeaPad Yoga Windows 8.1 OnScreen keyboard does not stay open

    hi
I just bought a new ideapad yoga and upgraded from windows 8 to windows 8.1. Unfortunately, I can't open the onscreen keyboard. After it opens, it immediately closes itself. This problem has also been described here, but wasn't solved:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-tms/ideapad-yoga-13-virtual-keyboard-does...
Is this a known issue? Does this have anything todo with drivers? - What can I do about it?
    Thank you!

Anyone got some tips? How can I contact the Lenovo support otherwise?
I am thinking of selling my Lenovo and buying another (definitely non-Lenovo) device. They always have troubles with their drivers (and have poor support)!! Something like that never happened to my Dell notebooks.
    Thanks.

  • Yoga 2 Pro stuck volume, missing cursor, onscreen keyboard unusable

I'm having several issues with a Yoga 2 Pro laptop running Windows 8.1 that's about a year old.
    1) Volume is stuck at 0. I can raise the volume, but it automatically lowers back down to zero, as if the volume-down key is stuck. The volume indicator is always onscreen.
    2) Cursor is missing, however I can still right click/left click. Also, the cursor will reappear when I uninstall the Synaptic touchpad drivers.
    3) The onscreen touch keyboard is unusable. I can click on the icon and it pops up, but it immediatly goes back down.
    4) Side screen charms won't stay on screen (example: pressing the F10 key or project screen the side menu pops in but immediately pops out, similar to the keyboard). Also if I swipe in from the right and try to use anything (devices, settings, etc.) it does not respond
    5) Pressing the start key doesn't bring it to the start screen, but holding it down for a few seconds does.
The above problems still exist in safe mode.I'm thinking it's a hardware issue or a bad connection of some kind. I've tried:
    1) Removing/reinstalling various drivers (touchpad, audio, graphics)
    2) Disabling services (YMC comes up often when looking at trackpad problems, but this hasn't worked for me)
    3) Uninstalled/reinstalled programs (Energy Management, Transitions, etc.)
    4) Did a complete factory reset at one point, had no effect.
I've had the problem a couple times before, and one thing that DID work was to hold down the power button for ten seconds while the computer was off, then let it reboot. Unfortunately that solution is no longer working. The threads I've linked below have been the closest I've found to a problem like this, but neither of their solutions worked for me.

Any help would be much appreciated! Definitely affecting my usability of this otherwise wonderful machine.

Update in case anyone else comes across a similar problem: I ended up sending my laptop into warranty, and it came back a week later working completely. No idea what the problem, cause, or fix was, although they didn't replace any major parts (battery, cable, cpu, fan, hard drive, keyboard, touch pad, display, memory, motherboard...going off the list they sent back, none of those were replaced), so I'm not sure what to think. Not even a factory reset. I'd love to know what the issue was, in case it comes up again but am happy that my laptop is once again functioning in either case!

  • Yoga 2-11 Onscreen Keyboard won't stay up when in tablet mode

I have seen many topics about the onscreen keyboard not staying on when in tablet mode but most of it from 2013. I am having this problem and I cannot find a solution. I have to go to laptop mode to sign in and then go back to tablet mode. The keyboard pops up but as soon as it does it goes away.  What is the fix? Yoga 2-11 purchased Dec 2014 from Best Buy.

Thank you for your swift suggestion! I think it has worked I will monitor it for a couple of days

  • Help! Colour banding graphics problem /posterization?

    Hi.
I've been having a few problems lately with colour banding/gradients/posterization. I first noticed it 3 or 3 days ago in photoshop, and seem to have noticed it's mostly system wide. I ask her because you're all clever and I don't have a clue what to do next! So please help me!
Quoted from my thread somewhere else that I've had no luck with and was recomendded to try here...
Since yesterday whenever I'm using Photoshop and there is blurred edges/gradients etc, basically not solid colours, there is really noticeable sharp colour banding lines around it.
It's happened before and I've accidentally had it on 8-bit instead of 16-bit, but I've checked all that and it's on 16-bit.
I've googled it and the only suggestion was about duplicating the layer and blurring it then adding noise, but that didn't even work.
[EDIT] SINCE THEN I HAVE REALISED IT IS AFFECTING SYSTEM WIDE GRADIENTS AND COLOURS
My system is set to Highest 32-bit too. I changed it to 16-bit to see what happened and it made the banding 10 times worse.
    An example of the problem
Posted: Thu May 03, 2012 7:32 pm    Post subject:
It's supposed to be a smooth gradient. I didn't use the gradient tool, I used the brush tool with solid white and then smudged and blurred it like I always do.
That's a good point, and actually I did start it as an 8-bit originally (my photoshop has been starting as 8-bit, grayscale for a few weeks now and I don't know why) but then after I remembered and changed it to 16-bit, and noticed the banding, I closed that document and started a new one and changed it to 16-bit RGB when the pop-up for a new document came up.
The resolution is always 72pixels/inch, and the size 256x512, colour mode RGB.
In advanced it says colour profile Working RGB: sRGB IEC61966-2.1 which I have no clue what means, and I never usually click advanced so I don't know if that is usually that or different.
When I use the brush tool and blur and smudge it it's fine, with no banding. It's only when I lower the opacity of that layer, or use Hue/Saturation and Lightness to darken it so it's hardly visible that the banding appears.
I've just tried it again with a fresh new document and it's still the same. Even in 32-bit it's exactly the same.
It's done it before, and all I did was close and reopen Photoshop and it was all fine again, but this time it happened last night and since then I have restarted my computer, had it turned off for hours, and I've even tried it on gimp and it's the same.
Ruled out that it's my monitor, tried a different one that I know works perfectly and it's still the same.
I've double checked all drivers, and monitor profiles, and drivers for my monitor, and colour profiles, and colour management, my graphics card settings, device manager for problems with any hardware, and everythings coming back fine. Could it be that my graphics card is old and just needs replacing? I'm not good with which one to buy so would getting a new one the same be of any help? The computer is about 6 years old, and the only thing changed on it is the RAM and hard drive.
I don't really want to end up not using this computer anymore if it's a simple graphics card issue, I just don't know how to tell if it is.
The thread that is from is here if you want to see some suggestions I've already had.http://www.imvu.com/catalog/modules.php?op=modload&name=phpbb2&file=viewtopic.php&t=423942 &postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
My username is 'Ao'  on there so that is me explaining the problem.
    To add to that...
Here is another example of what is happening.
I'm thinking from all the answers I got from google its a graphics card problem. Only problem is all the updates are installed, and I can't find anywhere that sells my graphics card to buy a new one. So I need to know which graphics card will work with my system right now?
I've done some tests so you can see my system details. Im clueless with which one to buy so please help.

Thank you for the reply, you seem to know what you're on about.
When I go to color managment in the first tab, devices, where it says profiles associated with this device it is empty, and 'use my settings for this device' is unticked. It says device at the top and mine says 'Display: Generic Pnp Monitor - Intel(R) 82945G Express Chipset Family'.
I did try to set up my monitor and had the .icc file for it in that list that pops up when I tick use my settings and click add, and I think I did set the profile to be the one for my monitor. I can't remember exactly how I did it and where I get that .icc file from, I've been through so many settings and websites trying to fix this.
It's not like I've recently changed any hardware or anything or my monitor, I was on photoshop one minute and it worked fine, then the next it just didn't. It's so strange because all I was doing at the time was using photoshop and I don't understand how it can go from working fine to all these problems with graphics and the banding. It's so confusing.
I can noticeably see banding on that image. It is still a gradient and smooth to a degree, but there is obvious lines of colour differences, and a harsher line on the outside.
Is that smooth for you? For me there is very obvious banding, especially at the top on the white on black.
I just don't know what else to do. I've tried everything I can think of, and spent hours upon hours on google. I've even tried a system restore to put it back to how it was when it was working perfectly, but it's still the same. I tried it on another monitor, just plug and play, and it was the same. Is there an easy way to install a monitor properly so that it should in theory work perfect? Because you're talking about the monitor profile, but with the second one I tried to test it all I did was plug it in and it was still the same. I've even tried it on my tv, and as I remember I think it was less noticeable, but then again that might be because of my tv settings because my tv is quite dark.
Just clueless as to what else to do now. I don't want to go out and buy a new computer for £100's over this, as I don't really have the funds to do so but I need a computer so the only option would be to sell my new iphone that I only got last week! Which I obviously don't want to do. That's how desperate I am to fix this though.

  • Can you create a keyboard short cut for the dictation mic with bluetooth keyboards? The multi-button requirement to open the onscreen is annoying and unintuitive.

(Using an "iPad 3", i dont care what apple calls it) There should be a built in one button access to this from EVERY keyboard since this function is used to replace typing. An inherent Apple shortcut like copy and paste. I set my iPad up on a framed photo holder and use it like a moniter screen when I write, my Bluetooth keyboard is separated from it and makes writing comments and long articles less efficient because it requires extra steps with every dictation, while taking up screen space to have the on screen open. There needs to be a way to access dictation without the onscreen keyboard open, via any standard keyboard.

I was "reasonably frustrated" for having more than one answer offered for a question that not only didn't I ask, but made it clear I was aware of the information it appears they cut and paste at me.
I see it as: the title of my post should inform any person with an elementery handeling of the english language that I not only have this type of keyboard but am well aware it has a button for the ONSCREEN keyboard. That makes it look like they were just "approval hunting" #1. 2nd Grampa Joe's generic sounding response as a zero level newbie already who found "this" post where the first line is about keyboard shortcuts......WHEN there are better posts with more views and commets for exactly that. Approval hunting #2. I'd say based on both, my suspicion is darn reasonably justified sir.
"couldn't find the answer he wanted" no sir, I didn't get an answer at all, they answered OTHER questions. Questions I didn't ask, even after having explained myself more clearly. If anyone is a Jerk, it's you for jumping to eronous conclusions and attacking me for them on personal level. I made a justified claim based on the BLACK AND WHITE TEXT, that it still appears to me is well supported, you just flung mud.........who's the jerk?
Finally, your first post answered my question directly. Thank you. However under General/Keyboard, at the bottom you can make keyboard shortcuts. They may not function how I'm asking, but you can make them.

  • Keyboard (hardware & onscreen) suddenly don't work anymore - only factory reset helps

I have my Passport for about a month now and just experienced the following problem for the second time: all of sudden the keyboard (both hardware and onscreen) don't work anymore. I cannot enter my device password anymore, I can focus the password dialog, but then simply nothing happens when I press keys.
After a restart of the Passport it asks me for my SIM card PIN. Again, I can focus the text field in the dialog, and I can touch numbers of the onscreen keyboard, and the number keys light up, but no input gets to the dialog.
There is simply no way to activate the device anymore. I can do a backup using BlackBerry Link, and I can access the device with BlackBerry Blend - but the device itself is useless. No kind of restart or reset helps. The only solution is to do a factory reset, after that the device works fine again - for some time.
Once this happened while I was on the road, without doing anything with the device. The second time it happened when I was trying to deploy a self written app using the Momentics IDE.
    Additional information:
    - development mode is on (needed since I want to develop Apps for BB10)
    - Snap is installed
    - a handful of Android apps from Google Play store are installed
    - two BlackBerry World apps are installed (whatsapp and HUB++LED)
Did anyone experienced similar issues or has an idea what might cause this problem?
    Thanks!

Have you tried using a usb keyboard/mouse?
I don't use any usb, only use PS2. Maybe it is possible to use some sort of a PS2 to usb converter, but I would rather like the PS2 to work.

  • AIR/Windows 7 Onscreen Keyboard

    Hi
Any reason why the onscreen keyboard would stop working when a TextInput is being focused?
    * AIR 2.03
    * Flex SDK 3.4
    * j3500 Motion Computing tablet (http://www.motioncomputing.com.au/products/tablet_pc_J35.asp)
The onscreen keyboard is the default version that comes with windows 7 Professional...The interesting thing is we did not have this issue in the AIR app in the past up until the our latest app update.
There are no definatley no programmical modifications to the default focus behaviour of any text editable fields or anything that would interrupt the default behaviour of the flash/air integration with the onscreen keyboard and the operating system....it should be transparent AIR/Windows 7 function and totally out of our hands...
The soft keyboard will still enter text into input fields, however the keyboard needs to be manually opened. The standard behaviour was...when the wacom pen tapped into a text input, a keyboard icon would appear next to the input and open the keyboard over the AIR app, now that does not work..
We are really at a lose with this issue and need to know which direction to look into. The tablet has all windows and motion computing specific updates applied to it...and can be replicated on other tablets etc..
We have not tried linux or mac installations troubleshooting because do not have direct access.
    Any ideas much appreciated.

I am havin the sam eissue as you can tell I have set al setings to fast..and still it skips keys randomly. I have reinstalled drivers and what else can I do? This keyboard came with bundle HP Pavilion s5310f. I need a fix for this issue. I type for a living and this is unacceptble sppeed and tuypps...shew. Any info, help, or new keyboard appreciatd...thisis no working

  • How do I stop the onscreen keyboard from popping up when I click on a text box?

I have a yoga 2 pro and the onscreen keyboard is irritating. How do I stop it from popping up every time I touch the screen? I am only touching the screen to get to the spot where I want to type--- I don't want the onscreen keyboard.
Sometimes it obscures the screen so I can't get to the right spot. Usually it disappears when I start typing, but sometimes I'm not even trying to type-- I'm trying to select something and I can't see it any more because the keyboard has popped up. I close the keyboard to get it out of the way, but it pops up when I try to touch the screen again. So I can never get to the spot I want unless I absolutely hit the exact spot on the first try. It happened even while typing this. I wanted to touch a certain spot in the paragraph, but then the onscreen keyboard popped up and I couldn't see the paragraph any more.
    Thanks,

Did you turn off any of the Lenovo software?
I closed a random McAfee process via the task manager in an attempt to stop the notification from popping up every ten minutes telling me to restart.
I also deleted a lot of the tiles from the colorful windows screen. I think some of them were Lenovo apps. They all seemed to be for some specific purpose though, that I knew I would not use. I have forgotten what they were. I did not delete many-- only a few that I knew right off that I would never use. Could that have affected something?

  • Activating onscreen keyboard while connected to bluetooth keyboard

    Hi,
I have the Apple bluetooth keyboard connected to my iPad 2 and I was wondering if there was way to activate the onscreen keyboard other then pressing the eject key on the top right of the bluetooth keyboard. Its not a concern when I'm close to the keyboard but when I'm further away and want to type something quick without the bluetooth keyboard it can become a hassle. I don't want to disconnect the keyboard and reconnected it either. Any input would be appreciated.

I have found another post that talk similar topic.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/12847503#12847503
Looks like the only solution are to either physically turn on/off (the keyboard) or press the eject button on physical keyboard. But when I am at the password screen, swiping up from bottom will not bring up the Control Center to allow me to turn off the bluetooth onscreen. Again I need to open the physical keyboard.
Probably an easier solution is to simply remember to turn off bluetooth before putting away the devices.

  • When I disconnect my bluetooth keyboard, Safari and Notes won't open the onscreen keyboard

Hi, on iOS 7 when I've dismissed the onscreen keyboard because I'm using my Bluetooth one, but then disconnect my Bluetooth keyboard, I can't get the on-screen one to pop up again in some applications like Safari and Notes. Other applications such as Mail are unaffected.
I Googled this a lot but mostly what comes up are "x tips and tricks for ios 7" articles which don't have anything to do with the problem. The only relavent result that I found recommended I restart my iPad. OK, so I restart my iPad and now the software keyboard works in Safari... That's ridiculous! I don't even want to use my bluetooth keyboard if I have to restart the iPad every time for when I'm not using it!
This apparently affects all bluetooth keyboard models, I use a Logitech FabricSkin folio, but I also have tried it with my Apple Bluetooth keyboard with the same problems.
Tapping in the text area used to bring the keyboard back up, but no more.
Please tell me there is some alternate solution, or a gesture to bring up the keyboard, or something? This is probably the stupidest thing I've seen in iOS 7.
    Thanks

I also have the same problem.  If you turn off Bluetooth, the virtual keyboard won't come back, especially if you're using Bluetooth speakers as well.  Heck, it even rebooted my iPad when I tried this.
I'm very tempted to dump my iPad + Logitech Keyboard if this doesn't get resolved in a timely manner.

I'm having problems (1) selecting onscreen text, (2) resizing menu boxes and selecting menues with the cursor. I'm not able to select menus and move them. I'm not sure how to correct this.

    1) This is because of software version 1.1. See this
thread for some options as to how to go back to 1.0,
    which will correct the problem...

    2) This tends to happen after videos. Give the iPod a
minute or two to readjust. It should now be more
    accurate.
    3) This?

I think 3,4, and 5 are related. Try the options I

I just noticed that one of the restore methods you posted was to put it into Disk Mode First rather than just use the resstore straight off, I Have tried that and seems to have solved the problem, If it has thank you. previously I have only tried just restoring it skipping this extra step. Hope my iPod stays healthy, if it doesnt its a warrenty job me thinks any way thanks again

  • How can you enter a line-break when using a Bluetooth Keyboard or onscreen Keyboard?

In Pages & Keynote the only way to force a line break I have found is to put your finger at the end of a line until the select/insert option appears and then selecting insert, then select line break.
This is frustratingly slow when typing a presentation or document so I bought a Logitech Ultrathin Bluetooth keyboard assuming that would have the Shift+Enter shortcut to make a line break. It doesn't, nor can I find any key combination that does, it's always a new paragraph, or nothing happens.
I have an Ipad3,  IOS 6.1.3. I've spoken to Logitech support - they said talk to Apple iOS support, I spoke with a chap at IOS support who didn't know what a line break was, didn't know shift+enter on a PC made a line break so didn't understand my question and ended the call.
Anyone know how to create the shortcut as an alternative to the onscreen slow way?

    Yes

You can also download the remote app if you have an IOS device
