@djszapi
hi,
the error message is very simple.
'OnTV' could not be loaded.
An internal error occurred and the applet could not be loaded.
that's all. and the icon is still the gnome foot.

my return key is sticky as though something is under it.  Can i pop it off somehow and clean underneath?

If you pop it off you may not be able to reseat it properly.
Better to get a can of compressed air and aim just around the edges of the key.
Most computer or office stores carry cans of compressed air for cleaning keyboards.

  • Printing Problems (Brother HL2140 under XFCE)

I can't get my printer to work under Arch (I'm using XFCE). It works under Ubuntu fine, and it used to work under Arch before I did a clean install (a couple weeks ago). I've spent too many hours trying to figure this out. Can someone help please? (I've already tried everything on the Arch wiki page for the hl2140 printer.)
    I first installed these packages:
    cups
    brother-hl2140
    system-config-printer
Then I tried installing a bunch of other "cups" packages.
    After that, I installed these:
    hplip
    brother-lpr-drivers-common
    brother-lpr-drivers-laser1
    brother-cups-wrapper-common
    brother-cups-wrapper-extra
    brother-cups-wrapper-laser1
    Output of lsusb:
Bus 002 Device 006: ID 04f9:0033 Brother Industries, Ltd
I'm using system-config-printer. When I try to add the printer, it starts to search for drivers and then crashes. (I run system-config-printer with sudo. I've tried adding my home user to lp and a bunch of other groups, but I can't figure out which one will let me configure printers). Here's the output when it crashes:
No ID match for device usb://Brother/HL-2140%20series?serial=123456789:
    MFG:Brother;MDL:HL-2140 series;CMD:PJL,HBP;
    (system-config-printer.py:21895): Gdk-WARNING **: system-config-printer.py: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0.0.
Fail. So I tried using hp-setup, but it doesn't find anything, even though system-config-printer and lsusb do:
    Searching... (bus=usb, search=(None), desc=0)
error: No devices found on bus: usb
    Searching... (bus=usb, search=(None), desc=0)
error: No devices found on bus: usb
I've also tried using the openprinting driver (which worked before I reinstalled Arch). Here's my steps:
    cd ~/Downloads
    wget -o "hl2140.ppd" https://www.openprinting.org/ppd-o-matic.php?driver=hpijs-pcl5e&printer=Brother-HL-2140&show=0
    sudo lpinfo -v
    sudo lpadmin -p 'HL-2140' -E -v 'usb://Brother/HL-2140%20series?serial=123456789' -P "$HOME/Downloads/hl2140.ppd"
It installs fine, but when I try to print, it says that there's a problem printing it.
    Does anyone have any guidance?

Yeah I tried that one too, but still no luck unfortunately. There's no option for my model numer (HL-2140) on there.
    -----edit-----
Lol wow I figured it out. I was using wget instead of curl. I was using wget -o, which just makes an output log. No wonder cups couldn't use it! Lol I'm finding this way too hilarious that after all that work, it was that little command.

  • Not a dead pixel.....but actually something stuck under the screen

I just got home from the Apple Store where they swapped out my iPhone because on some phone calls there would be a crackling sound like the earpiece in the phone was blown or something. I got home and was getting it set up and on white screens a see a little dark dot. I thought it might be a dead pixel but when you turn it off and look at the screen and turn it just right you can actually see something underneath the glass. I don't want to be a pain but this is really going to bug me. Should I take it back again?

Yes I have had this problem
The first phone I had, had a "stuck" pixel (it was always whiteish/blueish/greenish on any black/dark background). It was only one pixel but they exchanged it.
The next had another bad pixel and a piece of lint or something...they exchanged it again, though this took some arguing and second opinions. Finally I found the manager who agreed with me unlike the guy at the "genius" bar.
This one AGAIN had Many pieces of noticeable debris. They exchanged this one right away, no questions.
Now I'm on my 4th phone haha and it has Several "stuck" pixels. Around 5 or 6 actually noticeable ones. Its really driving me nuts. I want to have a phone with a good screen and have all this exchanging nonsense to be over. It also has another piece of dust you can see on white screens and when the phone is off.
I brought it in and they said to give it a few weeks and see if it gets better or worse. I said okay and left. It's just too upsetting for me. The thing was over 600 bucks. I'm going to another apple store tomorrow. Hopefully they can fix or replace it with one I can examine before I leave.
Did they replace yours with a good one?

  • [SOLVED] Thunar slow to start under xfce 4.10

    Hi,
Today my xfce updated to 4.10 and Thunar was slow to start. So I opened up the smb-browse.mount file expecting to see automount set to true but in fact it was still on false. So it looks like the usual trick to fix slow startup of Thunar is not working for me.
I am certain that gvfs is still the issue though because if you open a terminal first and do
    #gvfs-ls network:
there is a delay of similar length and any attempt to start thunar is instant

  • Something may be stuck under "ctrl" key

The right side of my ctrl key doesn't move when I press the key. If I press the left side, then that half goes down, but I get no response from the computer. I can only assume that there is something stuck under the key.
While this isn't exactly imperative - I use that key only as part of a hotkey combination to access other programs - I would prefer to have a fully functioning keyboard.
Can Macbook keys "lock up"; that is, have they been known to have a malfunction in the hinges beneath them?
Is there some way I can remove the key?
What are some suggestions for looking under or safely removing something stuck under there?
    Thanks in advance.

It pains me even mentioning this, but take a look at this set of visuals on removing a key:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88106
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/69631394@N00
Before that, however, I'd use a blower as a less invasive way of dealing with the troublesome key. Easily available, online and on the street. Hold down the keys surrounding the Control key, and shoot quick bursts on all sides. Do it upside-down, too, while a friend holds the keyboard steady.

  • Horizontal video tearing in xfce and ion graphics (nvidia)

    Hello all,
I have arch + xfce running no problems, but there is significant horizontal video tearing when I play videos (in vlc or firefox/flash). I have already enabled 'Sync to VBlank' within the nvidia-utils control panel. I think the problem arises from the xfce monitor settings window that only allows the frequency output to the monitor to be 50Hz. Can someone confirm this and/or offer advice?
    Thanks again,
    DF

Since Devotedfollower is using a nvidia ion card he will get the best results without compositing at all.
If you want to use a nvidia card along with compiz without tearing, I found these additional steps to be necessary:
    put
    Option "TripleBuffer" "True"
under Section "Device" in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf (if you don't have one, run "nvidia-xconfig" once as root)
put "nvidia-settings -l" into your startup applications
install and launch ccsm, open up the general options and look for a tick called "Sync to VBlank" and activate it
within these general options there is a tick called "recognize refresh rate" (or something alike); deactivate it
try playing around with the refresh rate slider (I got the best results when using the exact refresh rate for my display or something higher)
Note that these steps are only necessary if you really want to use compiz on nvidia cards. They worked with several GTX cards for me. Don't know about your ION though.
My netbook has an ION but it was one of the first ones. As far as I can remember it had no tearing on xfce without compositing but on compiz it had a bit tearing at the top of screen even with all the steps above.
Nevertheless I wish you best luck!
P.S. Tearing has always been a huge problem on Linux for me. After a lot research I found compiz being the only compositor able to almost eliminate tearing. So the only choice for nvidia users to get rid of video tearing is either to use no compositing at all (which results in teary desktop graphics) or to use compiz along with vdpau...

  • [SOLVED] Xfce and gtk-sunlight (rsw in the AUR)

I'm yet another refugee from Gnome 3. I've got Xfce set up almost exactly the same after a day of fiddling, but I can't figure out this thing, and there's nothing on google or the forums about it.
I'm trying to use the Realtime Sunlight Wallpaper app that updates the desktop background every 30 minutes. I assumed, it being gtk, that it would work in Xfce, but it doesn't appear at all. When I run it from the command line it seems like it's running fine with no errors. I feel like I'm missing something huge. Can someone tell me if this is even possible with the way Xfce does the background vs Gnome?
    Thanks!
Last edited by JohnnyRogers (2011-05-12 21:55:04)

I've had a look at this and rsw uses this command to change the wallpaper:
    gconftool-2 --type string --set /desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename
    (+ the actual filename appended.)
Under Xfce, xfDesktop is responsible for displaying the background, and it probably doesn't care much about gnome settings...
Try changing the code in support.h from
    #define GCONF_SET_WALLPAPER "gconftool-2 --type string --set /desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename"
    to
    #define GCONF_SET_WALLPAPER "xfconf-query -c xfce4-desktop -p /backdrop/screen0/monitor0/image-path -s"
It should work... However there are other commands (GCONF_SET_PICTURE_OPTIONS, etc. in support.h) that you may have to change to fix everything.

  • Utl_file under unix

    hi,
how ro read a file which is under windowsNT
    from a sun?
    how is the location-string?
    locaten = '//server//computer_name/my_dir'
    or so?
    thanks for answer

I did it once from a NT server with Oracle to a NT workstation. Then the file-string was:
    \\<pcname>\<sharename>\<the rest>
The UTF parameter in the init.ora must be set correctly (in my case it was * (I know not very secure)). For UNIX it must be something alike (i think).

  • Do I need to add new users under sun-web for declarative security to work?

    Hello,
Do I need to add a <principal-name> element under sun-web.xml whenever a new user registers on my website? I am planning to use declarative security for my website, so I went ahead and created a custom realm that uses JDBC to get users information from MySQL. To do a simple test I added a new user under a new group that does not have a mapping under sun-web.xml. However, web.xml has the needed security-constraint and security-role elements that define the role and the protected resources. The problem is that when I deploy the application under SJSAS PE9 I get the following warning: "No Principals mapped to Role [jdev]". Does that mean I have to add each and every use to sun-web.xml for the declarative security to work?

Good question. I am having the same problem with my LDAP realm. Funny thing is that the exact same approach worked fine and dandy with Sun AS 8. Sounds to me like something broke under AS 9 ...

  • Probably broken initrd, how to create one anew under Arch

    Hi again,
I managed to install Arch on my USB flash drive which I partitioned /dev/sdb1 to be /boot,
/dev/sdb2 = PV of vgarch with one lv_root and one lv_var, and swap as /dev/sdb5 (first  partition in extended part.)
The FTP install went fine after I had mounted /boot and the LVs / and /var.
I also successfully ran the setup afterwards, editing each config file, even those where I didn't apply any modifications.
Finally, I installed grub in the MBR of the USB drive, viz. /dev/sdb.
When asked during the configuration what modules I would require during boot
I confirmed LVM, RAID and included dm-mod manually in the MODULES array.
Nevertheless, the initial RAM disk must have been created incorrectly.
Because when I boot from the stick
the grub menu appears and when the default entry gets started I get the error message:
    Booting 'Arch Linux'
    root (hd1,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
    kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/mapper/vgarch-lv_root ro
    Error 15: File not found
    Press any key to continue...
I know that something must have gone wrong while createing the initrd file.
Sorry, right now I cannot even mount my USB stick in the running Xubuntu from where I write this posting.
The reason is pretty daft, as I was too unwary.
Being used to the RHEL/CentOS initrd image files (where absolute path names are stripped)
I instantly did the following mess and buggered up my running Linux.
    # mkdir /tmp/arch
    # cd /tmp/arch
    # gzip -dc /media/disk/kernel26.img | cpio -di
Ouch, this overrode many important binaries
I should have first piped it into
    ... | cpio -ti | less
    or at least
    ... | cpio -di --no-absolute-filenames
    Did I mention that I haven't made a backup
Never mind, this is a surf only installation anyway which I quickly can replace.
After having extracted the cpio image with stripped absolute paths I looked at the init script.
On RHEL/CentOS there is the mkinitrd script to recreate the initial RAM disk more easily
    than from scratch.
    Exists something similar under Arch?

    MKINITCPIO(5)                             MKINITCPIO(5)
    NAME
mkinitcpio - Create an initial ramdisk environment
    SYNOPSIS
           mkinitcpio [OPTIONS]
    DESCRIPTION
Creates an initial ramdisk environment for booting the linux kernel.
The initial ramdisk is in essence a very small environment (early
userspace) which loads various kernel modules and sets up necessary
things before handing over control to init. This makes it possible to
have, for example, encrypted root filesystems and root filesystems on a
software RAID array. mkinitcpio allows for easy extension with custom
hooks, has autodetection at runtime, and many other features.
    OPTIONS
           -c config
Use config file to generate the ramdisk. Default:
           /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
           -k kernelversion
Use kernelversion. Default is the current running kernel.
           -s filelist
Saves a list of all the files in the initial ramdisk in filelist.
Default: no; This means the filelist will not be retained if this
option isn´t specified. Useful for debugging purposes.
           -b basedir
Use basedir as a starting point for gathering information about the
           currently running system. Default: /.
           -g filename
Generate a CPIO image as filename. Default: no; this means nothing
will be written to the filesystem unless this option is specified.
           -a filelist
Append to an existing filelist. Default no.
           -p preset
Build initial ramdisk according to specified preset. Presets are
           found in /etc/mkinitcpio.d
           -m message
Print message before passing control to kinit.
           -S hooks
Skip hooks when generating the image. Several hooks should be
           comma-separated.
           -v
Verbose output. Outputs more information about what´s happening
           during creation of the ramdisk.
           -M
Display modules found via autodetection. mkinitcpio will
automatically try to determine which kernel modules are needed to
start your computer. This option lists which modules were detected.
           -L
           List all available hooks.
           -H hookname
           Output help for hookname hookname
           -h
Output a short overview of available command-line switches.
    ABOUT HOOKS
A hook is a script that executes in the initial ramdisk. The order and
which scripts are executed is found in the HOOKS=() array in the
mkinitcpio configuration file. A hook will, for example, set up the
udev device filesystem, load IDE modules, etc...
    ABOUT PRESETS
A preset is a pre-defined definition on how to create an initial
ramdisk. Instead of specifying the configuration file and which output
file, every time you generate a new intial ramdisk, you define a preset
and use the -p switch to generate an initial ramdisk according to your
preset. Presets are located in /etc/mkinitcpio.d
    FILES
           /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
           Default configuration file for mkinitcpio.
           /etc/mkinitcpio.d
           Folder containing mkinitcpio presets.
           /lib/initcpio
Files related to creating an initial ramdisk.
    EXAMPLES
           mkinitcpio
Perform a dry-run. This will generate an initial ramdisk but will
not write anything. Use -g to create the real image.
           mkinitcpio -p kernel26
Create an initial ramdisk based on the kernel26 preset.
