Oooops, Info Gone...?

In a nutshell, I decided to change the Admin. name on my PB 17" (not a good idea at all). After doing so I realized that I'd lost (so I think) alot my pref's, iCal dates, a few apps. etc... After many hours of re-installing music apps & Serial #'s, I did a spotlight search for ical & found most (if not all) of my dates in the metadata folder. So my question is (drum roll please) how do I get my info from the metadata folder back into iCal? Please keep in mind that I had to basically start from scratch with most of my apps. (or did I NOT have to do that). And why would changing the admin name be like creating a new user account. (or did I do something else in between that I'm not aware of)? Funny thing is just last week intuition told me to back up my entire drive, BUT OBVIOUSLY I didn't listen. I'll be glad when "Time Machine" gets here (lol). Anyway thanks for your patience in reading all of this, I'll be just as patient in waiting for your response. (pretty big nut ay...lol) PEACE...

Hi there,
Did you change the name of your "Home" folder? As this should never be done (as you now know) as all the files associated with the old name will not be updated to the new one - so effectively will be lost to the system. Not mention it'll confuse your Mac somewhat!
I don't use iCal much myself, but other iLife apps (as well as mail & Safari) have files in your User Library folder that if done correctly can be copied from one HD to another or from an existing system to a newly installed version of the same system. I've done so with my iTunes, iPhoto, Safari & Mail apps. Including copying iTune's playlists & prefs, Safari bookmarks & prefs, Mail mailboxes with sent/received messages.
As my HD had a directory error & needed a reinstall, I copied all the files I needed to an external HD & after the Clean Install I copied these files back to the original places but on the new system - it worked a treat! No errors, no problems, no missing data, no corrupted apps!
All you need do is search for the relevant files from your old setup & find the location of the current folder & swap them - so long as you do it carefully you should be OK. Do not modify the Root Library Folder without good reason! & never touch the OSX System folder!

You need to boot the computer from another source, e.g. a CD or an external drive. Then run Disk Utility, select the drive you want cleaned up, and run Erase. Note the security options: "write zeroes" will erase the drive completely.

Contact info gone when I sinc

I just upgraded to a 3G and want to fix something that has been a problem for about 2 years before I add all my contact info. Here's the deal.
In contacts I put in a company's name then their main number. I then add a phone and put numerous names and numbers in there. Some companies have 10-15 names and numbers.
Example:
ABC Company
bob smith 614-555-1212
bob smith cell 614....
larry smith....
Larry Cell
Amy smith
Amy cell
Now all this shows up on my I-phone fine but it doesn't show up in my outlook address book. Outlook only recognizes 3 numbers per contact. If anything happens to my phone and need to sync up I will lose all but 3 of the numbers. Per my example, Bob's numbers and one of Larry's numbers will be there all the others will be gone.
I tried an apple store, e-mail to apple and everyone else, nuttin. Everyone says "I never heard about that". Today someone said there is box/menu to change the number of phone numbers in outlook but I’ve spent an hour looking and can’t find a thing.

What you need to do is create every person at ABC Co as a separate contact on your iPhone and include "ABC Co" in the company line. They will each then become a separate address book entry in Outlook when you sync.
To quickly find everyone at ABC Co in your iPhone contacts, use the search function (at the every top of the contacts list), enter "ABC Co" in the search box and by the time you have got part way through entering the company name, a list of everyone at the company will have appeared on your screen for you to select the one you want to call. This will also enable you to include more information about each contact (e-mail address, cellphone number, notes or even a photo) should you want to.
You may also want to create a separate entry for the company itself to avoid having to enter address, main switchboard, website details etc for every contact at the company.
Incidentally, even if all the information in a contact entry on the iPhone doesn't sync with your address book, it will nonetheless be backed up when you connect the iPhone to iTunes. Should you lose the phone, you can restore everything that was on it when you last backed it up to a new one.

Problem: Loupe View Size & Histogram Info Gone

Somehow I pressed something that changed a setting and I can't go back. When I go to the Loupe view of a picture, its really small. The shooting info on the Histogram is gone now too. Even when I click over to the develop module is still small.
I can't figure out how to just reset the default settings for fix whatever got messed up. I can't find anything on google either. Thanks in advance for the help!

Help! Performed software update, now emails and account info gone.

Yesterday morning I performed the software update (Java, couple of security updates, QuickTime), and restarted.
Essentially, every e-mail received between early November 2006 and yesterday is gone. All folders created since then (and since I have started a new business, there are a lot), as well as new account info (new provider for second business, separate from first) is gone, or at least missing in action.
I've been backing up monthly, but for some reason there is no backup since one in January, and Backup (the software I've been using) apparently can't restore even that one – not that that will solve more than a small part of the problem.
ANY suggestions on retrieving the missing emails will be gratefully received, as well as any ideas on how this happened in the first place.

Problems arising right after installing a system update are usually the result of some filesystem corruption that should have been fixed first, or not having installed the update properly (e.g. applications running while installing it), or having ignored Apple’s "Important: Please read before installing" warnings, etc.
Although you may have lost the account settings as a result of some preferences file corruption, you shouldn’t have lost any actual messages or mailboxes. Have you tried searching for them in Spotlight? In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Can you see the missing mail there?
If the messages have really been deleted for some reason, and they are not on the server and you don’t have a backup, your only option in the case of Mail 2.x is to try to salvage as many deleted *.emlx files as possible with a data recovery tool such as Data Rescue II, TechTool Pro, or FileSalvage. Of these, the only one I know for sure that can currently recover deleted *.emlx files is FileSalvage. Stop using your computer right now if you want to try that, as anything you do with the computer may cause the deleted files to be overwritten.
And you should also verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described in the following article, in case there is something amiss in the filesystem that has a bearing on what happened:

MobileMe/Iphone Contact Info Gone!!! Out the blue...

I use MobileMe Push service as my primary email ([email protected]). When I unlocked my iPhone a few minutes ago and went to "Recent" calls, no names were there...only a list of phone numbers. When I go to "contacts", same thing: all the info is GONE except the name. *** just happened?? Has anyone else experienced this??
I still have my Macbook with all of the original contact info and I also have Time Machine backups, but when I power up tonight, I don't want the "cloud" to overwrite the Macbook and remove all my contact info!!
I have no clue as to what's going on. Any suggestions??

Well..my original post was at 11-something this morning, Eastern time. It's 7:15 now ...and still..no luck. I'm relieved it's not just me however. That said, I just turned "off" MobileMe Contacts on the phone and did a manual sync via Itunes and ..viola...all contacts are back, but still...this *****.
The problems is actually worse now. Before, at least my contacts were on the phone, just w/o the additional info (phone number, address, etc.). Now, when I turn MobileMe Contacts "on", ...absolutely nothing happens. I logged in to me.com and all my contact info is there, 100%. Nothing is getting pushed to the phone. Oddly enough, the other apps (mail, calendar, etc.) seem to be working fine.
I think I'll just go w/o MobileMe Contacts for a day or two until Apple can sort this out...

TS3999 calendar info gone

For some reason all my calendar info in icloud has been wiped, the same for my ipad mini, strangely though the info still exists on my mac mini but only up till April the 21st and then is't wiped clean. Can't seem to get peoples birthdays back on even though all the info is in contacts.
Whats happening, it's really frustrating and I can see no reason for whats happened?

Do this:
1) Make sure you are connected to Wi-Fi
2) Go to Settings/iCloud and turn on Calendars and other if desired then scroll to the bottom click on Storage and Backp turn on iCloud Backup
3) Now go to Settings/Mail,Contacts, Calendar and click on your email account turn on Calendars
4) On Mail,Contacts, Calendar scroll all the way down on Calendars/Sync select All Events.
Let iPhone and iCloud sync. This could take 5mins to 1 hr. You should see an Infinite circle by the 3G logo (top left on the screen). Once is gone then you should be able to view your calendar history.

External Hard Drive not in finder, but in Disk Utility, info gone? recover?

My external hard drive shows up in disk utility, but not in finder. Usually, in disk utility, there will be visible the model/make of the hard drive (such as 232.8 GB MDT MD25...etc), and then below that, there be the actual name of the hard drive that I gave it (such as Jack's External Hard Drive). In disk utility, it only has the first one (the MDT... name) and not the other.
How do I fix this situation? Is my hard drive dead? I don't think it is dead because I can hear it spinning and it shows up partially in disk utility. Oh and by the way, it doesn't give me the option of repairing the disk.

Alright, so I bought an external hard drive enclosure. The screeching noise is gone. Disk Utility sees the same "232.9 GB MDT MD25..." stuff, but now also "sees" "ROCK" which is the name I named the hard drive. But the lettering in "ROCK" is gray, not black. Also, its not showing up in finder. When I start up the computer with the ROCK hard drive on, finder says something like, "The disk you have connected was not readable by this computer." I try to verify disk in Disk Utility but it says "Disk Utility Stopped Verifying ROCK because the following error was encountered: Filesystem verify or repair failed."
So buying the enclosure, helped, but it seems the hard drive is damaged or the information is corrupt or something.
What is the problem I am having? (Is it not mounting or is the data bad or whats going on?)
Is there something I can do right now that can make this all better?
My last resort will be to try data recovering software (last resort because it costs around $100).

Mac Mail header info gone

How do you put the header info back? Sender, Subject, Attachment save option etc are suddenly missing from incoming email.
The email just displays the letter portion only.

Open up the Mail preferences. Go to the "Viewing" section. There is a dropdown listbox for Header Details. You can set that back to default.

What the.. where the.. Can't reconnect media files??? Source file info gone

This is bizarre. Many files went offline and now it won't tell me what is offline to reconnect.

Out of this 90 minute video, there are two 5 minute sequences that went offline. (I'm color grading every 5 minutes of the whole project using Color.) At some point without realizing it, it went offline and now the auto save doesn't have the file old enough for me to recover. (In the auto save vault, I just changed my # of copies per project from 40 to 100!)
My files are still on the drive (they were never moved!) but the source names are lost in Final Cut's sequence. A couple of files within the sequence with the offline file are still online. I don't know how 95% of the sequence went offline while the other 5% didn't.
I'm able to look at my original sequence (before exporting to Color) to compare I'll have to import the file one by one and then sync it up. HUGE TIME CONSUMING!
How did the media source name from my clips vanish? (I still love FCP.....)

I haven't moved any media files. Even if I did, I could easily reconnect the files.
The problem is the clips in the timeline and browser lost it's metadata on the name of it's source file. The clips has no idea what the original file's name was. In the picture, the list of offline files won't list. It has no idea what to look for.
I'm reconnecting them one by one. Here are the steps I have to take to get back on track:
1 - Go to last sequence (before send to Color seq.) and see what the clip looks like
2 - Find the media on the drive and get it's original name
3 - Go back to FCP and manually relink it.
This has happened before but only to a couple of clips which was quick to fix with this same method. I'm wondering how the clips lost it's info?

All info gone after software update, how can i get it back?

New G3, notified me I needed to sync w/itunes to get the new update. After syncing, and various problems and errors, it said i needed to restore my iphone... everything would be wiped clean +but i could get it back+ after the update was complete. Update is complete, where is the option to put all of my stuff back on my phone? My contacts, my appointments, my alarms, my life... aargh!

Turns out those error messages it gave me were because it didn't sync properly and create a backup. Which is why when I restored from backup it didn't reload my old info. Instead of assuring me that I would have the option to restore my info, it would have been nice had it told me that a backup hadn't been completed and that restoring my phone without it would leave me with nothing.
Tech support had me use my old SIM card to import my old contacts. This worked, but I've entered contacts since getting the new phone that aren't on my old SIM. And doing so left me with a bunch of re-organizing to do (deleting, combining, entering First and Last name fields...) it took me several hours.
I didn't get my appointments back, cause my old phone was just a phone, and that info wasn't on the old SIM, but I'm REALLY glad I got my contacts.

Some Track Info Gone Missing in AAC

Recently I trasferred 4000 songs from one computer to another. All but 100 transferred without problem, but 100 tracks came over missing album and date info. I re-transferred these 100 with the same result. All are AAC. Any idea?

That worked, by golly. I followed your advice and changed the "missing" fields and then reverted to the original info and the missing fields transferred correctly. Unfortunately, this fix requires one to go to every missing field in every track, change it, save it, revert, and save it again. I tried changing/adding other info, but this does not work. Strangely, when the original (seemingly fine) track is copied out of iTunes, then deleted in iTunes, then transferred back (on the same computer), the info goes missing! The tag must be corrupt, I suppose.

New account, Entourage info gone...

I'm working on a client's mac, and 2 users need to work on the computer, so I setup another account. No prob. I'm no Entourage expert though. The administrator account has Entourage, with 2 users in it, so the ladies were simply opening Entourage, and choosing which user they were and bam.
So, I setup the new account, and when I opened Entourage, it retained no settings from before. Fine I went to Entourage on the admin side and exported everything. Didn't work. I re-plugged in all the settings for the one user - same thing. It connects, but all the stuff they had on the sides and whatnot is gone.
I know this is more an Entourage question, but also an account question. I even copied the Microsoft User Data folder or whatnot into the new account.
any ideas?

Ok-- you gotta be kidding me! After a little more research, I read somewhere that by "re-naming" the "Microsoft User Data" folder with all the Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac files, it will erase the email Entourage email database? All I did was re-name it with a "Z" in front of it to push it down in my folders list. That can't possibly be true, can it? I can't restore, rebuild or "switch identities" to get my data back!!! Somebody help, if you can. Thanks. Worst case, is that I have a much older harddrive back up that I think I can restore my folders..... Ugh.

Library and info gone

Hello I've been having a very annoying problem with iTunes lately. This is now the second time this has happened. When I start up iTunes like I normally would everything is simply gone (music, playlists and other settings) and back to the first install settings. All my music ect is still fine, but I have to import the old library which is very time consuming. If anyone knows what I might do to fix this I'll give it a try.

I did a defrag yesterday and lost my entire library, ratings, etc. I now know about the XML files and will probably not have this happen again. However, I re-added all my songs, which have no ratings now. I have ratings on my Nano, but if I try to sync it will give the message about this Nano never syncing with this version of Itunes (and will wipe the Nano).
Anyone know of a way to get the ratings, etc off the Nano so I don't have to redo them yet again?

I received an email from [email protected] asking me to update my account info. As my cc expiry date had just changed so I thought oh damn I forgot. I put in my updated info, then when I hit submit, at least I think that was what was on the bottom, don't honestly remember, any way a screen for "Reported Web Forgery" popped up. I got out of there I did not go any farther but did my information go anywhere? Looking closer at the email, there it DHgate.com web address at the bottom. Please put my mind at ease! Thank you. I just need to know if my info went any where.
