Oops! An untagged string (assertion failed!) got thrown far enough that we display it to the user. T

After installing the latest update to Lightroom 5, I started getting this message when I started Lightroom:
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5[4407]: Oops! An untagged string (assertion failed!) got thrown far enough that we display it to the user. This shouldn't happen.
From what I've found through searches, plugins may be related to the problem.
The problem I'm having here is the lack of any information - no crash log, no reference to what caused this - in any log file.  I've taken the most recently installed or updated pugins and moved them elsewhere to test and am still getting this message.
I assume that when I see "This shouldn't happen" as a message from the software, that it's a significant warning.  What can go wrong / is going wrong as a result of the related problem?  Is my data in danger?
All help gratefully appreciated.

Thanks for your thoughts, Rob.
You're welcome .

The few times I wrote something like this, I dumped as much data as I could somewhere to facilitate the debugging process and it's a bit dissappointing that there seems to be no such output.
No such output enabled for users. I'm sure the developers have some way of debugging..

I wonder what the output of the -tracebacks switch would be.
It shows the error in context (I've done it before, but it was a long time ago) - what Lr was doing when error occurred. For example, if plugin was executing, it would show that.

I'm not familiar with the .agprefs file
It's where Lr stores preferences - see your presets folder (location is accessible via a button in Lr preferences dialog box: "Show Lightroom Presets Folder..."). Look in 'Preferences' subfolder. It's the source of some aberrant behavior sometimes..

my catalog is backed up in two places, on two separate devices.  But if there's corruption within the catalog, then the backups are bad, too.
If you've been using Lightroom's built-in catalog backup feature, then it creates a new backup each time, so old backups, if not yet deleted, may not have same problem as newer backups. But I think we're getting ahead of ourselves now.

  • Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5[48444]: Oops! An untagged string (assertion failed!) got thrown far enou

    after installing v5.3, I'm getting this error on startup (OS X 10.9).  I did NOT get this error with the release candidate.
    Any ideas?

    Certainly possible and your suggestion is good.
    The only thing that changed, however, was Lightroom.
    It's possible that the new version exposed a problem in the other software, however it makes sense to me to start with "What's Changed", pulling from my days - long ago - as a programmer.
    The most prudent thing - I think - is to wait and see if I'm the only person having this problem.  If so, it's certainly due to my configuration and I'll have to break it down.  If not, maybe a common element will surface.
    Thanks for your suggestion.

  • Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5[56250]: Oops! An untagged string (assertion failed)

    I posted this error before and I worked with someone in Support to try to identify what is happening, where and why.
    Unfortunately, Adobe doesn't have the proper tools (for distribution to customers) to debug this and, using the available tool to monitor startup, nothing is found.
    But the problem, introduced in Lightroom 5, has never gone away.
    Me aside, anyone come across this message when starting up Lightroom (Mavericks)?

  • Disk failed, got a new one. How can I install the Windows 8 without paying?

    So I got this product and after a year and a half disk had errors and had to replace it. Now I'm struggling to install windows 8 again! how can I do it without buying Windows 8?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    In all probability you installed the wrong version of Windows that matches the key that was originally installed on your system.  Definitely it was not Pro but probably the standard, Windows 8.1
    You may download from here:
    http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/18309-windows-8-windows-8-1-iso-download-create.html
    If you cannot install with the proper key you will have to order recovery disks.  If you live in the USA/Canada, call HP at this number 1-800-334-5144, and see if you can still get a set of recovery disks.  Otherwise the WorldWide site:

  • On start up lightroom 4 fails with this message "Assertion failed" anyone have a solution?

    Thanks

    After talking to Adobe support, they say that because LR4 has so many new features the catalog update doesn't always operate correctly!
    Nice one adobe, provide an update path that "doesn't always work"!!!
    The only way around it is to create a new catalog and import all the pictures from the failing catalog. In the process losing all published services! Not ideal but I'll have to live with it.
    Surely the "assertion failed" message could write out to a log stating exactly what caused the fault. In the apple console all you get is
    "31/05/2012 13:49:23.006 Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4: Oops! An untagged string (assertion failed!) got thrown far enough that we display it to the user. This shouldn't happen."
    Come on Adobe this is poor!!!

  • Assertion Failed alert when exporting in Lightroom 2 BETA

    Please help! I am currently using the Lightroom 2 Beta on a Mac (OS X 10.4.11) and installed a plug-in to allow for a graphical watermark. Unfortunately, the plug-in wouldn't work properly (showed an internal error even though the plug in manager said it was working fine) and when I removed the plug in (through the plug in manager) I now cannot export at all through the export button in the Library mode. I get an alert saying "assertion failed". Technically I can still export through the file/export option but cannot get to the settings window (filenames, folders etc) to show what folder to put them into or specify the export settings.
    Console report: "2008-04-08 10:21:19.413 Adobe Lightroom 2 Beta[308] Oops! An untagged string (assertion failed!) got thrown far enough that we display it to the user. This shouldn't happen."
    I tried reinstalling but must have missed a file as the same error keeps appearing.
    Can anyone give me a hand?

    See the notes on the beta forum. Post this there.

  • Assert failed in /modules/streams/flv/TCFLVData.cpp

    Hi,
    We're running FMS 3.5.2 r654 on RHEL 5.2 and we're getting tons of errors like this:
    "2009-08-31      10:47:43        11394   (e)2581279      Assert failed in /modules/streams/flv/TCFLVData.cpp line 2033   -"
    Always the same line number.
    Can we safely ignore this error? What does it mean?
    We're only getting this since 3.5.2. We were running FMS 3.5.1 before, and weren't getting this error, but upgraded to get rid of the occasional "core experienced [x] failures"-crashes.
    Kind regards,
    Pieter Barrezeele

    thanks patrick for your interest.
    we're using the 2.0.3.
    this error code was never traced in the log file of the 2.0.2

    Markus,
    thanks for your quick response. However, I am curious to know what could be the problem. Please let me describe briefly what I have done so far.
    - Started with ./sapinst and went thru choose service, define parameters, check parameters steps
    - It prompted me to enter SolMan key, done.
    - It stoped here and prompted me to login as oram1s and start Oracle installation by executing /oracle/stage/102_64/database/SAP/RUNINSTALLER. done.
    - After completion of Oracle 10.2.0.1.0 installation, ran orainstRoot.sh  and root.sh as root. done.
    - SAP install manual suggests to apply Oracle patch set. Since I had downloaded 51031811 Oracle patch dvd from market place, I executed /sapsoftware/extract/51031811/DVD_ORACLE_10.2.0.2_Patches_LINUX/LINUX_X86_64/Disk1/runInstaller. It completed successfully so assume it applied Oracle 10g R2 patch set 1.
    - Now, I went back to sapinstall session and continued from there on.
    - It went thru a couple phases and "create database" and then came across this issue in "Create/Check tablespaces"
    NOTE: I came across few other issues in between so followed proper resolution for those and moved on.
    Have I missed something or done a mistake somewhere?
    As always, appreciate your help!
    thanks,

    According to your exception log, the exception is thrown by ValueBindingImpl.getValue().
    Why don't you set a breakpoint on it and debug stepwise?
    The code of getValue() is as follows:
    protected Object getValue(FacesContext context, String toEvaluate)
            throws EvaluationException, PropertyNotFoundException {
            Object result = null;
         ExpressionInfo info = checkoutExpressionInfo();

                info.setExpectedType(Object.class);
                info.setFacesContext(context);
                info.setVariableResolver(application.getVariableResolver());
                info.setPropertyResolver(application.getPropertyResolver());
    //** I guess here is the ground zero! **/
                result = Util.getExpressionEvaluator().evaluate(info);
                if (log.isDebugEnabled()) {

    thanks

    Why do you suspect an operating system issue?
    I'm guessing you are on Windows. If you look at fprintf.c and line 55/56 you should see:
    VALIDATERETURN( (str != NULL), EINVAL, -1);
    VALIDATERETURN( (format != NULL), EINVAL, -1);
    These are the checks for the file pointer and the format control string and if either is NULL an assertion is raised.
    Here's an easy way to see this:
    {noformat}
     * this will cause an assertion
    fprintf(NULL, "bad!");
    {noformat}
    {noformat}
     * this will cause an assertion
    fprintf(fp, NULL);
    {noformat}
    Have you confirmed that the assertion is raised from:
    fprintf(ptr,"Calculation Terminated Sucessfully!!!\n");
    Since you have "expression:str !=null" that is an indication that the file pointer is NULL. Perhaps you are not checking the file pointer before using it and it is NULL?

    Mark

    Any help/assistance on this issue would be highly appriciated.

    I ran into this exact same problem (on Solaris, JVM 1.4.1). Although I don't know the exact cause, I can tell you what I did to fix it..
    Of course, this happens when you try to load a native library (a .so in this case). I ldd'd that .so, and found that it in turn was linked to two other libraries in my control, and some other OS libraries.
    When I statically linked either one of my libraries, such that only one of the libraries under my control was still linked dynamically, leaving the OS libaries untouched, then the problem went away. Note that it didn't matter which one I linked statically- as long as one (or both) were static there was no problem.
    My guess was that there were some sort of cyclic dependencies with these libraries, but right now I'm happy enough that it works, so I'm not going to try and pursue this further..

  • Assertion failed Dump in ALV

    Hello,
    I am displaying a ALV report as POP-UP . Its developed based on OOPS ( gr_table->Display).
    The ALV displaying the output perfectly when the records are less. For example, the ALV pop-up  able to show the 50 records perfectly . If the records are more than 50 (example 500), then i have to scroll down to see the records  from 51 to 500. When the records are high , the Alv trying to display the output.. but in a second, its throwing the dump((ASSERTION_FAILED)). Few times, its able to display the data, when i am trying to scroll down to see the below records..its throwing the dump (ASSERTION_FAILED). I tried with all possibilities but no luck. And no idea about ASSERTION FAILED DUMP.
    Kindly help.
    Regards,
    Venkat

    Hello Both,
    Thanks for the reply. Please find the error details
    The ASSERT condition was violated.
    Error analysis
        The following checkpoint group was used: "No checkpoint group specified"
        If in the ASSERT statement the addition FIELDS was used, you can find
        the content of the first 8 specified fields in the following overview:
        " (not used) "
        " (not used) "
        " (not used) "
        " (not used) "
        " (not used) "
        " (not used) "
        " (not used) "
        " (not used) "
    Probably the only way to eliminate the error is to correct the program.
    If the error occures in a non-modified SAP program, you may be able to
    find an interim solution in an SAP Note.
    If you have access to SAP Notes, carry out a search with the following
    keywords:
    "ASSERTION_FAILED" " "
    "CL_DATAPTABLECACHE============CP" or "CL_DATAPTABLECACHE============CM00P"
    "TRANSMIT_PACKET"
    Any clue. Please.

  • DRG-50600: assertion failed Error

    I currently work on a project with a healthy sized document warehouse. We have roughly 280,000,000 XML documents stored in a CLOB column in a partitioned table. The operating system is HP-UX 11.23.
    We just upgraded to Oracle 11.1.0.6 from 10.1.0.4.
    When executing a "contains" query that searches two different terms within two different zones the following error is generated:
    ORA-29903: error in executing ODCIIndexFetch() routine
    ORA-20000: Oracle Text error:
    DRG-50600: assertion failed
    The exact same query runs fine with Oracle 10.1.0.4.
    The recommended action for DRG-50600 is to "Contact Oracle support for assistance" which I guess I will have to do. Has anybody had this issue with Oracle 11g?

    That shouldn't cause this particular error - instead you should probably have got a "query parser syntax error". Is it easily reproducable?
