Oops.  Applications Folder Dropped by Mistake

Weeks ago...
While in Finder, I meant to drop another folder into another.. instead I moved my Applications folder into another folder.   I could still open applications from Finder, so I didn't want to mess with it.
Just now... after searching the forum here..
I deleted the dock application folder since it had a question mark on it.. , and was trying to drag and drop the application folder from my HD to the dock... but my finger slipped, and it copied the application folder to the desktop instead.
#1.  Can I drag the desktop Application folder to the Dock?
#2.  Did I just bog down my computer with a huge file?
#3.  Best way to put Humpty Dumpty back together again?
Thank you in advance!
Helen

Thank you both!!
I just tried a test.  Opening Finder, all the applications are still listed in the HD (root?) app folder, and all apps open. (whew!)
Went to desktop application folder (copy) and that opens the apps too - albeit, a little slower.
Your suggestion is to make sure it is in the HD file, and leave the other folder on the desktop as long as I have free space, correct?  Deleting it.. wouldn't hurt  from what I understand.
Kappy, I don't know how to restore the dock icon <..embarrassed..>   But I am not afraid to try!
I do apologize for my understanding of technical terms..  Sorry!  And thank you!

  • Can't drag-and-drop into applications folder

Just got a new iMac last week, my old ibook finally died. I'm trying to install firefox in the imac and i can't. It downloads fine, I can open up the .dmg file, but then I can't drag the icon into the applications folder. I can drag it, but nothing happens when I try to drop it. I've tried using the alias folder, the folder on the dock, just doing it in the finder window, nothing works! tried re-downloading, everything i can think of. Since it is a new machine, do i have something in preferences set wrong? Help!!!

Do you have "allow user to administer this computer" checked off in your account in System Preferences -> Accounts ?
Also, right click on your Applications folder, and hit "Get Info" Make sure that the group that owns it is "admin" and "admin" has read and write privileges. If it's admin, but it says "read only" click on the lock, put in your password, and flip up the group privs and change it to read and write.
If the group is NOT admin on the Get Info screen, you will need to launch /Applications/Terminal.app and issue this command:
    chgrp admin /Applications

  • How do I uninstall software not in my applications folder? The icon won't drag and drop to trash.

I received a fitness device and downloaded the software. It didn't download to my Applications folder and I wasn't smart enought ot make sure I saved it there. Now the device doesn't work and I want to uninstall the software. I tried dragging and dropping the icon from Launchpad but that doesn't work. This lomg-time PC user turned Mac lover needs hlep!

well this is strange, but hang with me a sec.  Some of these will sound obvious but i have to ask them.
    1)  Are you 100% sure it's not in your application folder?  (I have downloaded stuff and looked for a while without seeing the app RIGHT in front of me).
    2) The hard thing to believe is that it is in your launchpad but NOT in your application folder.
    3) Try downloding it again....it might find the detect the old version and overwrite it.  I have never downloaded an app that did not automatically download to the applications folder, but if this one did, check to see what option it gives you to dowload to by default.  That way you can see maybe where it was installed to, and thus find it and delete it.  then reinstall to the applications folder.

  • Missing application icon in applications folder

I drug my applications folder to my doc to make a shortcut and got the poof cloud. now all my icons are gone in Applications folder in finder and in all my time machine backups.how do I get them back. all I can find in trash is a folder called Recovered Files with 48 files like this one /var/tmp/tmp.0.BbdYw430645480 inside.

I'm guessing you didn't prep your new drive. Do the following (you will need to boot from your external drive:)
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
After formatting has completed quit DU. Now use SuperDuper! or your favorite cloning utility to clone your system from the external drive to the new internal drive.

  • Safari Not Visible In Applications Folder

I've not used tax prep software on my year-old iMac G5 (OS 10.4.8) until now. I just installed Tax Cut 2006. When I tried to use Tax Cut, it couldn't find Safari (which it requires) in the Applications folder, and refused to run. When I went looking for Safari in the Applications folder, I couldn't find it listed, even though I use it all the time, and it's on my Desktop. However, when I did a search, Safari shows up as being in the Applications folder. Can anybody help?

This isn't just drag and drop, is it?
    Yes, it is.
Probably when you put in on the Desktop, you moved it out of the Applications folder. To create an alias when dragging a file, hold the ⌘ and Option keys-a curvy arrow will appear under the icon.

  • Accidentally put documents in Applications folder, can't get them out

In Finder I accidentally moved a folder with two Word documents from the Desktop to the Applications folder. I can't move them back out. When I try, I get pointers to the documents in the Applications folder. I can delete the folder, but then the documents are gone.
Suggestions for undoing this welcome. (I should have tried "Undo" early on.)

Hold down the Command key when you drop it. You should see the badge disappear when you hold down the key. That indicates it will move as opposed to making an alias (default) and making a copy (Option key).

  • I cant get application fold to stay on the dock

hui i cant get the applications folder to stay on the doc.  I know how to drag and drop but all it does is copy to desk top and not on to the dock... can you help thanks

Place folders near the Trash can area and it will create a new "alias"
Just make sure it doesn't go into the Trash Can.
I lost my Safari /other on the Dock! "poof" "?"

  • Deleted applications folder in dock - how do I get it back??

    Hello
The applications stack in my dock has disappeared, can you help me get it back? If i drag in an alias of the applications folder it opens in finder, but i want to have it like the default.
    thanks all

If you put your Applications folder, not an alias, in the Dock (on the right part of the dock, you should get a stack of the applications popping up when you click on it. If you dropped an alias, this is no good, it will open Applications folder.

  • CD Burn Application has vanished from Applications Folder? Cannot burn a CD!

My CD Burn Application is no longer appearing in my applications folder. I would like to burn a CD but cannot since I cannot locate the burn application and when I insert a blank CD it is not recognized by the computer.

Go to File in the menu bar and select New Burn folder.
This will appear on your desk top.
Drag and drop the files you wish to burn to that folder.
Go to File menu and select Burn ... to Disk.
(You can change the name of the disk just before the burn starts.)
    Follow the directions.
Trash the burn folder after the burn is done - the contents are aliases.

  • Applications folder problems

    Hello,
Hoping someone can help me. I installed some software updates today and after doing so decided to install some new software, when asked to drag the application into my applications folder, I did, only to get an error message telling me that I don't have permission to modify the applications folder. I can however click authenticate and enter the password to install it. But I have never had to do that before today.
When looking at the folder permissions it tells me that I have read only permissions. Any idea how it got that way, and how I can change it back to read and write, easily and safely?
Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Did you repair your permissions after you installed the update and/or software? That might help. However I can't remember since I never run as admin and have to enter my password to install something anyway but it may have happened with one of the OS updates in regard to security (honestly I don't know).
It's really not a bad idea to have it that way but if you want to change it and you are in the admin account when you have your get info box up click on the lock in the box and enter your password and you should be able to click on the drop down box where it says you can read only and change it to Read & Write.

  • Re-organizing Applications folder

My Applications folder is getting rather full. It takes a noticeable length of time just to open it (nothing worrying, just a noticeable lag). I know this is due to the number of items. I'd like to organize the apps into 5 or 6 "category" folders (eg movie stuff, sound stuff, graphics stuff, etc.
Is there any reason at all that certain apps need to be at the top of the Applications folder (ie not in a folder in the apps folder)?
Is there any argument for ~not~ putting apps in a folder within the applications folder; that its not a good idea?

Is there any argument for ~not~ putting apps in a
folder within the applications folder; that its not a
    good idea?
Definitely not a good idea. Many apps require that they be located at /Applications, especially Apple's apps. The most common problem that occurs if they are moved is that they fail to update properly via Software Update.
What you can do is create a folder somewhere, organized any way you like, with aliases to your apps. That way you can have your custom-organized "Applications" folder, while leaving the real Applications folder untouched. You can also drop your "Applications" folder (the one with the aliases in it) into the right side of the dock, so that you can right-click on it and navigate to your programs that way, kinda like the Windows Start Menu.

  • Installed third party applications not showing Application folder?

    Hi,
i've installed third party application outside from AppStore. i chosen "Anywhere" option on Gate keeper. however its not proper installation process hence how can i install? if i install third party application which is get .DMG file from some one else and installed. if i install those application its not displaying inside the Application folder on my Mac OS X 10.8.3.
    Please anyone suggest me,
    Thanks in Advance,
    Suresh Balakrishnan.

if i double click on Xcode icon, Xcode application lauched immediatly. however Xcode is not there in the Application folder.
Because you didn't drag and drop copy the app into the Applications folder, so your running it from the DMG instead.
A DMG is basically a disk image volume, like any other seperate hardware volume like a USB thumb drive, a external hard drive, or another partition, except it's virtual and based all in software.
If you don't know your way around a computer you shouldn't be using Xcode to begin with.

  • Installing Adobe Creative Suite to Shared Applications folder

    Hello,
I have a client asking to install Creative Suite to a shared application folder on the server. Can you anyone with some experience on this provide any feedback on performance, issues, stability etc? Is it even doable with Creative Suite to host it on the server, without using Home Directories?

If it can even be done performance is going to be devastated because of the fact that everything that "runs" need to be loaded over the network as opposed to from the local hard drive. If you think it takes too long for Photoshop to open now, you ain't seen nothing yet.
Without actually trying it first hand I can say it's not likely to be easy. Simply running the installer on the server definitely won't work. Creative Suite isn't a simple drag and drop install. There are a lot of shared components that get installed into locations other than the Applications folder and the clients won't know where to find them.
I hate to think the worst but the only reason I could even suspect wanting to do this would be to utilize a single licensed copy amongst multiple users which would be a license violation. I'd be wary.

  • I am using iphoto 6.0.6 and after opening the application it drops below the dock.  I can see it when I use expose to reveal all open windows but once selected it drops below the dock.

I am using iphoto 6.0.6 and after opening the application it drops below the dock.  I can see it when I use expose to reveal all open windows but once selected it drops below the dock.

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • Finder crashes when clicking on Applications folder

VERY weird. Beginning a few days ago the finder on my Mac Pro crashes whenever I clicked on the Applications folder. It makes no difference what finder view I am using (icons, columns, etc.). Even if I click on the alias to the Applications folder in the sidebar, the finder crashes. I cannot view the contents of that folder by any method. The only way I can get to an item contained therein is to search for it using Spotlight.
Thinking that maybe my startup disk was hosed somehow, I ran Disk Utility (repaired permissions and verified the disk) and ran all tests within TechTool Deluxe. Both said the disk and filesystem were fine.
I tried copying the entire folder to another disk, but the copy aborts after the first few items (stops with Adobe Photoshop; the next item alphabetically is Aperture). In case Aperture was somehow a problem, I removed it (searched using Spotlight and then dragged it to the trash). No change in behavior.
I used Carbon Copy Cloner to replicate the entire drive to another, newly reformatted drive and made that drive the startup disk. No change in behavior.
It sure seems that the issue has to do with some kind of file corruption (that CCC dutifully replicated) rather than a faulty drive, but I have no idea where to look next for a solution (other than reformatting and reinstalling over 100 applications from scratch; ugh).
Does anyone have any idea what may be going on here? Until I can fix this, the Mac Pro is pretty much useless (luckily, I also have a MacBook Pro).

Hi - I too am having this issue.
When I click on any of the items in my sidebar (i.e. -desktop, documents, applications, etc...) this causes the finder to crash and restart.
I have tried trashing the com.apple.finder.plist and running disk utility but to no avail.  I also found this other forum discussion (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1336291?start=0&tstart=0) Where this was part of the post

Re: finder crashes when clicking desktop icon in sidebar - any help?
Feb 2, 2008 3:43 PM (in response to choegl)
choegl, that crash is the same place as andreas's but it got there in a different manor. In the manor I would expect it to. It is trying to retarget the window to your selection in the sidebar and setup List View according to the view options for that folder from that folder's .DS_Store. Its specifically trying to get the label for one of the columns in List View (i.e. Size or Name or Date Modified) but the value it gets from the .DS_Store is corrupt/bogus and causes the Finder to crash (specifically a component underneath the Finder call CoreFoundation via a call to CFStringGetLength). Here's how you solve your problem. In /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app type: +cd <path to problem folder>+
    +rm .DS_Store+
+killall Finder+ Pressing return after each line. You can get the path to the problem folder by drag/dropping the folder into the Terminal window. When the Finder comes back up, see if it still crashes when you click on that problem folder (i.e. your Desktop) in the sidebar. Repeat the steps above for any other folders that behave this way when you click on them in the sidebar. Hope that helps everyone...
btw, I wrote up a bug report on your behalf about this issue and sent it off to Apple (# 5721669)."
I tried this as well and nothing!
Anyone have any suggestions?  I'm at a loss and am hating this issue!  BTW, if I right click on any of the items in the sidebar, I can then click on open to get the folder to open.  HASSLE!  and if I forget (which is likely since I move too fast for my own good) then I crash the finder.  Also, this happens on all the users on my mac.
    Thanks!!!!
