Macbook pro can´t find/connect to my hotspot
Dear experts!
I recently moved to a new place and got myself a T-Mobile HomeNet Router. Everything works fine (WiFi and Ethernet) with all devices (iPhone, iPad, iMac, Linux-machine...) EXCEPT my MacBook Pro (specs below in the product section) :-(
Ever since I moved the Macbook can´t find or connect to my home hotspot. Settings on the router are as follows:
- 802.1 b/g (it IS capable of b/g/n but I found a thread somewhere pointing out that this could be an issue)
- channel 13 (deactived auto-channel because my neighbours had overlapping channel settings...this was the only one that worked)
- rate auto
- frequency 2.4 GHz
- 30% signal strength (same reason as above)
- QoS activated
- SSID hidden (tried broadcasting it, made no difference)
- WPA2-PSK
- AES (TKIP and TKIP+AES available as well...but neither made any difference)
I can connect via ethernet, however that´s not the intended purpose of neither my notebook nor the router :-/ Someone suggested it might be an encryption issue but even without ANY encryption the hotspot won´t show up in the list. Password contains special characters but even my old iMac doesn´t seem to have problems with it. I tried connecting manually via "other network" without success. Also via Controlpanel -> Network -> Assist me ...
I´m sitting right next to my router so the signal strength can´t be the cause either (besides all other devices work just fine anywhere in my appartement). Restarted all devices, each one is up to date. Last thing I tried was making the changes in Firefox cause someone suggested it might be a bug in the router software, still no success.....I´m out of ideas.
Posted this in another Mac forum already but no one could help me :-( You guys are my last hope ... does anyone know this issue and how to solve it??
any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
many thanks in advance

How to set up a wireless private bubble at paid hotspot? WTR54GS
Hi,
I have the WTR54GS travel router. Reading the manual I understand I can create a private wifi bubble with the WTR54GS to share a hot spot.
From the manual:
"You can also use multiple devices on a single hotspot account in a coffee shop or airport lounge and be protected with WPA Personal encryption or a powerful SPI firewall".
I've successfully used the WTR54GS as an AP with the router connected by cable to a wired Internet source.
But how do I set it up to receive one wifi signal then rebroadcast as a private "bubble" I don't see any specific settings in the setup or descriptions in the manual. Maybe it's easier than I think?
If possible I'd like to be able to use a B wifi device (my PDA) at a place that's only broadcasting G.
thanks.

Message Edited by tony_vancouver on 02-23-2008 10:03 AMThe WTR54GS (wireless travel router) is often confused with the WRT54GS (wireless router), because of their similar names.
The WTR54GS (Travel Router) can accept an Internet connection from an ethernet cable or an unsecured wireless network. This is set up using the very first item on the router's setup pages, namely "Incoming Internet type" which can be set to "wired" or "wireless". The key thing here is that the WTR54GS cannot use an encrypted wireless system for its incoming Internet connection.
It can then generate a secured (WEP, WPA, or WPA2) wireless LAN, under your own unique SSID, and you can connect several wireless computers to it. (If you have a switch, you can also connect several wired computers to it.)
If you are trying to use the router to share a single paid unsecured wireless connection, then it should work. Be sure when you sign up that you use the router, so the service recognizes the router's MAC address (and not your computer's MAC address) as a "paid" user.
If you are trying to use the router to provide security, this will not happen with this type of a "wireless network-to-wireless network" setup. The reason for this is that all your transmissions ultimately are passed unencrypted between the WTR54GS and the hotel's wireless router.
On the other hand, if you use a wired "Incoming Internet Connection", then the router works quite nicely at setting up a shared and secure wireless network. ( This assumes that the wire you are using is secure. )
By the way, your wireless b device should easily be able to connect to a wireless g network.

Hotspot core dumping during JVM garbage collection ?
We have an application which calls a 3rd party supplied server API which has recently been upgraded to use Java 1.5
We are getting the following error reported by our client application. The application is also now running Java 1.5 but references many classes in jar files which would have quite old code in.
The supplier of the API has stated that the problem requires us to recompile all our jar files using v 1.5 ( including things like jconnect and jms ?!?!? ). This sounds like a bit of a cop-out to me, not to mention being impossible since we don't have the source for things like jconnect.
I suspect that there is a garbage collection problem at the bottom of all this, but I'm not sure how I can "prove" this, nor do I currently have any real clue as to how to fix any GC problem that may exist.
The application is supposed to wait for a message on a MQSeries queue and then transforms it via Xalan XSLT and sends it to a Server application. I've tried playing around with heap sizes etc but that just seems to make it worse. If I leave it at the settings that the previous version used then the client at least manages to process a couple of messages before core dumping. There doesn't seem to be a consistent trigger event to cause the core dump ( it's not a message arriving on a queue for example ) but it does seem to be fairly consistent timewise, i.e. after
Any ideas gratefully accepted.

It looks like you are crashing with 5.0u3, and I'm pretty sure 5.0u16 is available. You
don't want to waste your time chasing a bug that's already been fixed. -
Iphone 4 personal Hotspot not working after update to IOS 7.1 India BSNL cellular
Iphone 4 personal Hotspot not working after update to IOS 7.1 India BSNL cellular
BSNL is not a supported carrier. Personal Hotspot requires carrier support and provisioning of the account to enable it. iOS 7.1 disabled the ability to manually configure Personal Hotspot on unsupported carriers.

And how am I supposed to answer my own question?
I can't figure out how to respond so ill go this route. I can't seem to find the button/place to which I can choose, to turn on a hot spot. I have been through every option and searched to no avail. Could it be that my iPhone 4 is not hotspot capable as I was led to believe by the apple sales associate? Is there an app I can find to make my phone a wifi hotspot? So I can get on the Internet to view the pages I want that require adobe which this piece of **** software monger won't even support?

How do I turn my Macbook Air into a WiFi Hotspot?
I have a 11" Macbook Air (MBA). While I am able to turn my iPhone4S to turn into a hotspot and connect my Macbook to the internet through this connection, I would like to use it the other way around as well.
At times I connect my MBA to the Internet using a 3G Wireless Modem/Dongle. I tried activating Sharing in network settings, but I do not see the Ethernet/Airport options - only items visible are WiFi, Bluetooth.
Is there a simple way of turning your MBA into a hotspot - something my iPhone can easily latch on to as a WiFi connection?
Thanks! The only way, and I'm not sure the air models can do this, is to have a ethernet adapter, usb or thunderbolt, and have it connected to a router by ethernet and then you can set the wifi card into the hotspot mode.
But if you have both a iphone with data connection and 3G dongle for the mac what is the purpose of connecting one device to the other for internet access? They both already have internet access and you are paying for both whether you use them or not. -
Personal Hotspot does not work after update to 10.10.2
Good morning!
After my update to 10.10.2 on my MBP (15" mid 2010) my connection to the internet via personal hotspot (iPhone 5s, iOS 8.1.3) does not work.
The MBP connect to the hotspot, but there is no connection to the internet. My iPad (Retina, iOS 8.1.3) works fine simultaniously with good bandwidth.
Rebooting Mac, rebooting iPhone etc does not work.
Anyone else has this problem?
Any suggestions?Just saw same problem with a client's computer.
MacBook Pro
WAS 10.5.1.
Installed 10.5.2, booted up. Fire up ichat, get your buddy list. Double click a name, says "Cannot Chat" in bold then says "Add at least one person to this chat before sending the first messsage." with an OK button. -

IPad does not find iphone hotspot
I have iPhone 4S and an iPad2 WiFi both running iOS5.1
I use the iPhone hotspot function to get the iPad on the internett when not at home. This workes great, I had to type inn the WiFi password the first time i connected the iPad, later the iPad connects without having to type the password.
Since iOS 5.1 the iPad sometimes have problems finding the iPhone hotspot. I turn on the "shared internet" function of the iPhone, open the smartcover on the iPad, but it does not connect (the two attached rings does not appear). If I go to Settings>WiFi on the iPad, the iPhone WiFi hotspot does not show up, the iPad just keeps searching. Then after a little while, the iPad suddently connect, ususally after I open Safari or Mail or something on the iPad. If I then close the smartcover, and leave the iPhone hotspot on, reopen the iPad smart cover, again the iPad does not seem to find the WiFi hotspot. I have to turn the hotspot function off/on on the iPhone, and then after a little while it works. When first connected, everything works OK.
Is this a problem with iOS 5.1?Just going to the hotspot screen on the iPhone puts it in host mode where it's easy for the iPad to find it.
You lose some speed due to bandwidth bottleneck of Bluetooth, but I found bluetooth tethering had fewer headaches and was more persistent.
