Open a pdf at a specific section

Hi,
I would like to open a PDF at a given section without using browser.
Is it possible? Which command line I may use and what is the required PDF configuration?
I hope you will help me,
Cordially, Alban

Yes , the feature is available in Acrobat.Any section on a page can be defined as a named destination. The panel to do so is available through View->Navigation Panel->Destinations. Also there is a list of PDF open parameters which can be given in command line , one of them is nameddest. So if you select a section on the page and name it X, and give acrord32.exe /a nameddest=X filename.pdf, the focus would be on section X. These command line parameters are honored by both Acrobat and Reader but destinations can be viewed and added through Acrobat only. Needless to say, this would work even if the page number changes.

  • Setting a way to open a PDF to a specific section from HTML?

I currently use InDesign CS4 to create technical manuals. And I have the latest Acrobat.
We now want to create context-sensitive help from the same content. One way would be to export the content to XHTML. But I think I'd get better looking results if I could get the HTML to open the PDF to a named location in the PDF. For example, I'd like to add a tag called "Feature X" in InDesign that is retained when the PDF is generated, and then be able to add something like <src="mydoc.pdf" openAt="Feature X"> in the HTML. Then I'd hope to see mydoc.PDF open to the location of that tag (and not to page 1).
Is such a capability available in inDesign? And if not in InDesign, then can the tag be added in Acrobat?
Even if I cannot do this with a named tag, is there any way for HTML to open a PDF to a specified page? And can this be set up in InDesign so that I don't lose the location every time I generate an updated PDF?
    Thanks for any help,
    John

In the PDF, create a distination, you can then add a parameter to the HTML link to the PDF to open the named destination.

  • LINK : open a PDF at a specific size (acrobat X)

    Hi all,
I'm creating links between several PDF files.
For some links, I open the PDF a new window (with regular link options).
But, I need to open the pdf at a specific size, as a HTML/ javascript popup.
Is ther a way to achieve this?
    Many thanks in advance .

  • How do I open a PDF to a specific page via the command line?

Several questions about opening PDFs from the Mac OS X command line:
    1) How do I use the "open" command to open a PDF to a specific page? (I know I can open a document via: open doc_name.pdf)
    2) How do I use the "open" command to pass multiple arguments (page no, zoom scale, view mode, etc...) to open a PDF file in a specific manner?
    3) Does Preview handle the same parameters as Acrobat Reader? If not, what are the differences in options?
I've spent hours searching for this answer and have come up dry. I've downloaded Adobe's "PDF Open Parameters" document -- it lists all of the parameters I need, however I can't get any of them to work from the command line.
My goal: Open a PDF from the command line to a specific page. At first glance, I thought this would be simple to do and find -- however, after a lot of searching I haven't found an example on how to do it.
Anyone have any experience doing this, and care to share?
    Much appreciated! ---> Kelsey

I don't know of any way to do what you want using the 'open' command. It can probably be done with Applescript, which you could call from a shell script. The Preview application doesn't seem to be scriptable. I don't use Acrobat, so I can't tell you anything about that. Looking through the dictionaries of the apps I do have, it seems that Skim (another PDF viewer) has an AS 'page' class. Below are a couple of links that may get you started. Look for more specific guidance in Applescript forums.

  • How do you open a PDF to a specific page number in Safari 8.0?

I'm using the command #page=33 to try to force Safari to open a PDF to a specific page number. While this works fine on just about every website browser, it doesn't seem to work in Safari. What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks!

The problem is most likely with the Safari PDF plugin, which doesn't process the open parameters correctly. To be fair, though, this is not a part of the PDF ISO specification but something that Adobe implemented on their own in their PDF plugins, so other applications are not obliged to follow it.
If you switch to using the Adobe plugin then it should work, even in Safari.

  • Do all versions of Adobe support opening a PDF to a specific page?

I am looking to append a url with "#page=x" in order to open a PDF to a specific page. Do all versions of Adobe support this functionality?

Well, we first have to define what we mean by Adobe.
Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat do, not in all versions but in recent versions (the last decade or so).
It works only in certain browsers, and only if the PDF is opened in the browser window NOT downloaded or opened separately.
I assume you are aware that there are many non-Adobe PDF viewers (e.g. those built into Chrome, FireFox, Safari, and IE on Windows 8); each will have their own idea of what to do.

  • Opening a PDF to a specific paragraph in a browser?

I create PDFs of software manuals with Indesign CS4. And I use Acrobat 9 to add features to the PDF.
My question is whether it's possible to assign a tag to a piece of text in the PDF's content and then be able to have the PDF open to that tagged text in a browser based on the way the PDF is invoked in the HTML. For example, can I insert a tag "ToolBar" in a paragraph and then put something like <src="MyDoc.pdf" openAt="ToolBar"/> in the HTML in order to have the PDF open at that paragraph instead of the default page.
If I can add the tags in InDesign all the better (because that way I don't have to recreate them for very new version). But if I can only add the tags in Acrobat, I'd still like to know.
I'd even like to know if I can open  to a specified page number from the HTML, and not something anchored to text, like a tag.
    Thanks for any help,
    John

Thanks for the reply. That sounds like exactly what I need. But I haven't yet gotten it to work, even though I've tried multiple variations on the exact syntax of the HREF. Details below:
    1. I have a PDF that was created in InDesign CS4 with a destination called: "dest_Mixer". That restination is currently on page 35.
    2. I exported a PDF and chose "Acrobat 8" as the compatible version (the highest version in the dropdown list).
    3. In Acrobat 9 Pro Extended, I viewed the Destinations and saw that "dest_Mixer" is indeed in the list.
    4. I created some simple HTML that includes the following PDF specification:
            HREF="C:/path/MyDoc.pdf#nameddest=dest_Mixer&pagemode=bookmarks"
    5. When I click on the link that should open this PDF, the PDF does open (and the bookmarks panel does appear, so I know IE7 is reading the whole URL, including the parameters).
    6. But the PDF still opens at the first page. I've tried formatting the URL in other ways, but the "nameddest" parameter never seems to affect how the PDF opens.
In an online search, I found as recently as April of this year references to a bug where the PDF open parameter for "page=" is not always working as expected in Acrobat 7. Does anyone know whether there's a bug in Acrobat 8 and/or 9 that makes the "nameddest=" parameter ineffective?
Or maybe someone can tell me that the HREF I provide above is not correctly formatted ... and how to fix it.
Thanks for any help you can provide,
    John

  • Open a PDF to a specific page from command line

I want to open a locally stored PDF file to a specific page from the command line. I have seen examples of accessing web based files using http and the #page= parameter but this does not seem to work for a file stored on my local drive.  I want to be able to use VBA from MS Access to control the opening page.

    Hi cfwoodbury,
When opening a PDF document from a command shell, you can pass the parameters to the open command using the /A switch with the following syntax:
    <Acrobat path> /A "<parameter>=<value>" "<PDF path>"
    For example:
    Acrobat.exe /A "zoom=1000" "C:\example.pdf"

  • Use servlet to open a PDF at a specific page

Is it possible to create a servlet to open a PDF file at a specific page?
The equivalent of myPdf.pdf#page=12 but through a servelt using header of the response may be?

This is easier solved outside of Acrobat. For example, if your clients download the PDF from a website, add a form with the text and an "I agree" button before you provide them the link to the file. Or if you send it to them by email, first send them an email to which they need to reply before getting the PDF.

  • Opening a PDF in a specific page from a PDF created in indesign

Hello, I'm working with CS4 and I need you to click on a button, or from a "hyperlink" in a text, open a pdf file but for a given page.
I can not change the target pdf and also I have to access a single pdf into multiple pages, put an example
persone one speaks at the pdf 1, on page 14
person two speaking in pdf 1, on page 15
I wish that when you click on the person 1 opens pdf 1 on page 14, and when you click on the person 2 opens pdf 1 on page 15
    Thanks in advance
    mateo

Thanks, I had not noticed in the new dialogue coming out. Thank you very much. A greeting.
    Muchas gracias

    Rectification
ohhh, no, the page references are to an indesign document, not a PDF
I have not indesign files where you created the PDF to which I have to jump and I can not add bookmarks to pdf, pdf files are protected.
    thanks

  • Opening another PDF from a specific path yielding error

    Hello,
I'm trying to open a PDF (child.pdf) from a PDF(main.pdf). If the both the main.pdf and child.pdf reside in the same directory, the code below works fine.
    app.openDoc("child.pdf");
However, if I move the child.pdf to c:\pdf_templates\child.pdf and modify the code to:
    app.openDoc("c/pdf_templates/child.pdf");
    I get the following error:
Exception in line 1 of function top_level, script XFA:form1[0]:#subform[0]:Button1[0]:mouseUp
NotAllowedError: Security settings prevent access to this property or method.
    App.openDoc:1:XFA:form1[0]:#subform[0]:Button1[0]:mouseUp
The error is to do with security settings preventing access to the another path. I have check and re-checked all security settings and I still get the error.
Any ideas on how I can overcome this issue???
    Thanks,
    Jose

    Hi,
the error message in Acrobat is misleading.
There is no security setting blocking you from opening the form.
You really have an raise error, because the path you provided is not correct.
The absolut path has to begin with a leading slash (/).
    app.openDoc("/c/pdf_templates/child.pdf");

  • Is it possible to open a PDF from the notes section in the iPhone/iPad calendar app?

If it's not possible, do you know if there is a third party app that can accomplish this? I am an administrative assistant and it would be very helpful to attach PDF documents to my boss' calendar in Outlook so then he could access it from his iPhone/iPad at meetings. As of now, I email him the required PDF documents before his meetings so he can then access them using iBooks. Any advice would be most appreciated.

Not directly as an attachment, but you can put a URL.  A web link.
E.G., a dropbox file link might be quick and easy.  It's how I would do it.

  • How to open a pdf at specific page from EXCEL hyperlink

I can open a .pdf from EXCEL using hyperlink. May I ask, if ever possible, how to open a .pdf at a specific page from EXCEL hyperlink ? I don't mean open a pdf then click on a bookmark or enter a page number. (I am using Adobe Reader v9.5.2 and MicrosoftOffice Profession Edition 2003.)

    Hello,
The parameters that can be used in the URL when opening a PDF document are

  • Using the "highlight" parameter in an URL to open a PDF

I have read the "PDF Open Parameters" document:
    http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/en/acrobat/PDFOpenParameters.pdf
I am trying to use the "page" and "highlight" parameter in a URL (called from Flash) to open a PDF to a specific page and then draw a rectangular highlight on a specific area on that page. According to the above document, I should be able to do this by using the following URL:
    http://www.MySite.com/MyPdf.pdf#page=10&highlight=10,20,30,40
This will open the PDF to the proper page (10) but I don't see any highlight. The "PDF Open Parameters" describes the usage of the "highlight" parameter as follows:
highlight=lt,rt,top, btm "Highlights a specified rectangle on the displayed page. (Use the page command before this command.)
The rectangle values are integers in a coordinate system where 0,0 represents the top left corner of the visible page, regardless of document rotation."
It sounds to me that all I'm supposed to do is define the left (lt), right (rt), top and bottom (btm) boundaries of the rectangle by a single integer.
But, why am I not seeing the highlight? Do I need to use co-ordinate X,Y sets? Are the integers I am supposed to be using pixels, or arbitrary units? If 0,0 is the top left corner of the page... what's the bottom right corner?

    Try this:
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/acrobat/pdfs/pdf_open_parameters_v9.pdf#page=7&highlight=100,2 00,600,400
(0,0) is the bottom left corner of the viewed PDF page.
    For an 8.5 x 11 page size; the x-axis ranges from 0 to 612 and the y-axis ranges from 0 to 792.
(points -- 72 to an inch)
In an AUC thread about placing an annotation to a specific location on a PDF page, Thom Parker wrote:
"There are several coordinate systems used in Acrobat.
The info window uses a modifed version of Rotated User Space.
There's also device space, which is the OS's window coordinate system, it also starts at the top left.
But for placing things onto a PDF page there are two main spaces "Default User Space" and Rotated user space.
Both put (0,0) at the bottom left corner, sort of."

  • Open a pdf in an url with parameters #zoom=scale, left, top

In the previous versions of Adobe Reader, it was possible to open a pdf in the web browser adding some arguments : #zoom=scale, left, top.
So we could open the pdf at a specific position, with a specific zoom.
But in the last version for windows, 10, the parameters 'left' and 'top' seem to be ignored. Only the zoom value is taken into account.
There is no error message, no warning. We could write the values we want for the left and the top but nothing happens.
So, I was wondering why it doesn't work anymore ?
And to be sure, I re-installed the version 9  of Adobe and it works, but not with the 10.
(and I hope that is not a fonctionnality which wasn't re-implemented in Adobe Reader 10).
    If someone has an idea...
    Thanks

So, nobody has an idea ?
Juste to be more clear, I give an example :
    http://www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/devnet/acrobat/pdfs/pdf_open_parameters.pdf#zoom =300,200,200
Then, if you enter this url in a new tab, considering you use the adobe reader plugin to open pdf in web browser, the file will be opened with a zoom of 300, and the letf corner position will be at 200 pixels of the right, and at 200 pixels of the top.
But it doesn't work with Adobe reader 10, that's my problem...
Could someone help me with this ?
