Open and edit PDF files like sharepoint

In sharepoint when we open a PDF document, an ActiveX control gets installed, and the file opens in Adobe Reader installed at the client machine. There is also an additional menu item that allows the file to be checked in back to the server.
I need to achieve a similar kind of functionality for my application. Can some one guide me on where I need to start?
The purpose here is to automate the task of downloading the PDF file, editing it and then uploading it back to server.
I am ok if there is any way the file can be opened in the browser itself and then edited and saved (like by using any activeX control).
Are there any tools or licenses I need to buy for this ?
Thanks

Adobe Reader won't but Acrobat Pro XI can open the same document in two windows and it updates both as you make changes "on the fly"...
The downside? $499.
Acrobat Standard is $299 and I  don't know if it can do the "one doc two window" editing.

  • When will we be able to open and edit PDF documents in Indesign?

    Hi
    It would be nice if Indesign could open PDF files.
    When will this happen (without a plugin)?
    Today I need to open the files in Illustrator. The customer prefers to use Indesign, so even though Indesign can export pdf documents I will have to tell the customer and the program can not open pdf files. This I find really weird.
    Hopefully opening and editing pdf files in Indesign will happen real soon.
    Have a great day!

    Paal, I'm sorry for that little out-lash. There is nothing wrong with inquiring the feasability of a new feature. The problem is that PDF has been an "output intended format" from the very beginning.
    An Illustrator file (from a fairly modern version) also is a PDF file, for all intents and purposes. You can rename an .AI file to .PDF and use it anywhere, with any software that supports PDF (so that's excepting Apple's Preview, probably ;-) ). Moreover, you can still open and edit this PDF with Illustrator and get all of your objects, symbols, layers, paragraph styles, and guides back!
    That's because in fact this file *contains* all this extra information in a data block marked "For Private Use Only". Other software, if adhering to Adobe's PDF specs, will simply ignore this (and thus my little jab at Apple's Preview). Does that mean you can edit such a PDF with *any* software? No -- the Illustrator data is "proprietary", and the details are not published to use by other software developers. Similarly, one could envisage InDesign to do the same. Yes, it would lead to *huge* files -- but hey, you would be able to open THAT file into InDesign and edit it. But not with any other software!
    The meta-problem is that an extremely large amount of this private data would be *extremely* dependant on the software that was used to create it with. What would an Illustrator file do with InDesign's GREP styles? What would InDesign do with Illlustrator's brush styles, or symbols? Illustrator allows slanted guides, InDesign does not.
    And let's not focus purely on a combo of ID and Illy; Photoshop *also* outputs PDFs, and its graphic data has yet another set of requirements.
    So all of Adobe's software would need to be able to parse *every others' data* to some degree. Well, it's still not "unconceivable" as all of this would need to be done in one office (note that in that single office there are still vast differences in something as straightforward as a User Interface across the CS suite). But there are lots of other software developers out there, and they *all* want to write out PDFs, all with their own internal data! (Think of the different requirements between an architectural app and one for graph plotting.)
    A *possible* solution would be to add "more" metadata to a PDF without crossing into the realm of "every single bit". Article tagging is an example of this -- it tells software that wants to know in which order *plain text* is to appear, and as such it serves as meta-data for plain text content. But the mind reels thinking of what more to add -- a list of used GREP styles per paragraph would probably be useless to anyone else.
    But such an idea will not solve the problem, as 1. this meta-data is optional (lazy programmers would be allowed to say "nothing to see here, move along"), and 2. this data would only get added to *newly created* files, and it would not retroactively make older PDFs editable ...
    (Now that's just the *short* version :-) h

  • Mark up and edit PDF files?

    You advertised to me that you could provide a product that enabled one to mark up and edit PDF files.  I spent hours trying to download it, install it and run it, hours and hours and hours of bitter frustration. Time and time again I had to agree to this, register that, click on this, scroll down to find that, install something, else, update something else, wait for this to run, wait again for the next thing to run, and then find something else in a something file, close this, open that, stop this, tell us what f===ing browser your'e using (Chrome) start that, verify this, confirm that, choose a f==== password, choose another f===== password because that one is not right, choose yet another f=====g password because it's the wrong shade of pink, choose a f======= userrname,  and in the end, nothing worked, Nothing changed, I still cannot edit or mark up any Adobe Acrobat files. Every time you open a file like this it pesters you to download updates and this is just a f====== nightrmare,  I have wasted hours when I could have been working and your product did not work or make any difference. I still don't know if you have to pay but if you do I resent you hiding that until the end. I accepted a supposedly free 30-day trial but that is not enough time to get the f====== product to download  install and work.
    Why did you advertise this?
    You started this situation by advertising a product and sending a pop-up. All it caused was huge waste of my time and effort.
    You are like a girl who stands on a street corner saying "Wanna hooker?" then when someone says "Yes" he is expected to produce his birth certificate, passport, health insurance card, Green card, national insurance card, baptismal certificate, take her out to dinner, take her out to dinner again because that wasnn't good enough,  register his name and credit card details, undergo an international credit check , choose five f===== passwiords, undergo a DNA test and marry her grandmother. Then she says "I've got a headache."
    It;s just not f=====ing worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Well we have no idea what you tried to do to install the trial version. There may have been a fundamental error in your process, but unless you let us know what was happening, we can't help. As for Adobe, we don't try to defend them, but try to provide help where we can.
    Sorry you ran into frustration. The package does a lot of things, but for you the trial would have been ideal to see what worked like you expected and what did not. A lot of people expect all sorts of things out of Acrobat that are not possible, thinking it is like a word processor. It is not like that, but a PDF is more like an electronic version of a piece of paper. Modifications are typically a pain, just as it is with paper.
    Over the years a lot of features have been added. The markup is OK, but some of the functions continue to be clunky. The forms is a major contribution to a standard PDF. The OCR feature is useful for scanned files. So there are many features. Reader is basically that, a Reader. It generally allows the completion of forms and possibly submission electronically (depends on the creation process).
    If you want to try again (assuming the trial period has not run out), then let us help. When you do the install, you need to be sure you log in as the administrator (on Windows) and disable anti-virus. There may also be an issue of the compatibility of the trial version and your OS (you never mentioned). So there are possible fixes that might be able to help you play with the trial.

    Hi Keith,
    PDF Pack is a conversion tool which would convert PDF to different formats and vice versa. It cannot be used for reading PDFs.
    If you want to open and read PDF file you can use Adobe Reader.
    You can download Adobe Reader from below mentioned link.

  • How to open and edit CRP files?

    Hi,
    at my workplace I see the following folders:
    C:\Program Files\Novell\ZENworks\Asset Management\bin\UsageLogs
    In this folder I see secret files like: 20090115.CRP and 20090115-web.CRP
    Each days ZenWorks create this 2 files.
    How can I open and edit it? Which software have to install at home for check it? I'm interested in very much what contain this files...
    Thanks,
    Gery

    Those files would be software usage metering files. There is no software to the best of my knowledge that opens those files. They are loaded automatically by the collection server into the database.

  • Any way to open and edit .MOD files on iMac?

    I am brand new to iMac, after wasting too many years on Windows. I have a Hard Disk camcorder that I uploaded from to my old PC. The movies are in the .MOD extension. I cannot seem to find a program to open and edit them on my new Mac. I used PowerDirector on my old PC, but that program doesn't seem to have a Mac version. Will iMovie be able to handle these files? I have quite a few home movies in this format, and I don't want to lose them! Thanks for your help!

    You can use a program called MPEG Streamclip to convert your MOD files to MP4s, which can be imported by iMovie. Also, you can change the mod file extensions to mpg which allows you to view the files with Quicktime (although, at least in my experience, they still need to be converted with MPEG Streamclip to be recognized by iMovie 08).

  • How to open and edit "*.txt" file with "Notepad"

    Hello guys!
    I'm facing problem with SharePoint 2010 Enterprise and got no clue how to solve it.
    What I want to do is to open "*.txt" (which is placed to "Documents Library") in "Notepad", so I could edit it and save (publish) directly to SharePoint from "Notepad".
    If I upload any Microsoft office File, such as "*.docx", "*.xls", etc - it works as it should - document opens in appropriate application and everybody is happy.
    But, when I create documents library, put some "*.txt" file there and click on it - it opens in new browser's tab as text, so I cannot edit the file.
    What I tried to do is to activate feature "Open Documents in Client Applications by Default" - not happy.
    Edit "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\TEMPLATE\XML\DOCICON.XML" - I've modified "txt" entry as follows:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <DocIcons>
        <ByProgID>
        </ByProgID>
        <ByExtension>
    <Mapping Key="txt" Value="ictxt.gif" EditText="Notepad" OpenControl="SharePoint.OpenDocuments"/>
        </ByExtension>
        <Default>
            <Mapping Value="icgen.gif"/>
        </Default>
    </DocIcons>
    Still not happy.
    So, how do I make this stuff work?

  • Acrobat 9 Pro Slow opening and closing pdf files - "Not Responding"

    I was responsible for pushing to get and keep 25 enterprises licenses for Adobe Acrobat Pro Vers 9. Corporate is pushing Blue Beam!
    We are on Acrobat Pro Vers. 9.3.1. Windows XP Pro 32 bit OS.  (PCs and laptops 1 - 3 years old, min 2 GB RAM, 2.1 GHz CPUs)
    Recently pdf files have been slow to open and close to the degree that windows .  It's to the point where I thought we were having network issues since this the problem is widespread.  However, it can occur when opening files on the local machine as well.  Worse, it's intermittent.  We do not run any add-ins, 3rd party or Adobe.  Most of these file run from 25kb in size to 2MB, rarely are they 5MB+.
    I just installed 9.3.2 and will keep an eye on it.  Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions as to what might be causing this or, what to look for?
    Thanks!
    Brian

    Thanks Brennao.  Our Organizer90 files were 7MB - 9MB.  I've deleted them on my PC and a couple of others.  Adobe help was no help for disabling the the Organizer.  I had to search the forums again to find out where to do that, and low and behold, the app apparently defaults to store data for 12 months!  I've change the setting to "Don't Remember PDFs", on the same PCs and am monitoring the performance to see if this is the "Silver Bullet".  If it works we'll put the instructions in our company FAQs.
