Open app in current space/desktop option missing

After upgrading to Yosemite I now no longer have the option from the task bar -> app -> options -> This Desktop or Desktop on Display [#].  It looks like this option is SUPPOSED to still be available on Yosemite: OS X Yosemite: Work in multiple spaces
Every time I restart my spaces are all moved around and some, not all, of my apps open in different spaces.
I'd like to get organized again.  Am I missing something?

  • Bring Open Application to Current Space

Is there a way to bring an application to the current Space?
Situation: I'm actively working in Space A and I need to access information from an application that is in another space, Space X. I can easily enough click on the icon in the doc to switch me to that space and application. However, I would like to option to bring that application to the current window.
Has anybody out there come across a way to do this?

There are several ways to move a window into another space. Here are two:
In the all-spaces view (F8 by default), you can arrange windows into whatever space you want.
Or... go to the window you want to move. Grab the title bar to move it and shift spaces (Control-Arrow, for example) while holding the window. The window will move along with you as you cycle through spaces.

  • Shortcut to cycle open windows in current Space?

    Hi!
How can I get a shortcut to cycle only between the windows in the current space?
    Please help!
    /roda

"the default shortcut for this is control+F4 (or controlfnF4 depending on the keyboard you are using). You can change it to what you like in system preferences->keybaord->keyboard shortcuts->keyboard and text input."
Thanks alot -- this does exactly what I need!

  • Yosemite - Open App On Particular Screen

I am wondering if there is a way to always open an app on a particular screen in Yosemite. In Maverick you could right click on the app in the dock and select Options>Assign To>Desktop on Display 1 such as the  image below, I don't see this option in Yosemite. Is it gone? Do I have to enable this somewhere?

    Hi Kryptik Kode,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
The ability to assign an application to a specific space or display still exists in Yosemite, although the option does not appear unless you have multiple Spaces open.
If you are using multiple displays (monitors), you may need to enable this option in Mission Control preferences:
    Displays have separate Spaces
If you use the Spaces feature and have multiple displays, you can set up separate spaces for each display.
    From:
OS X Yosemite: Mission Control preferences
If you want to switch between multiple Spaces on your Mac display, try this:
To quickly see and go to your spaces, zoom to Mission Control.
    Create a space
Zoom to Mission Control, then move the pointer toward the upper-right corner of your screen. (If your Dock is on the right side of the screen, move the pointer toward the upper-left corner.)
To add a space, click Add . You can add up to 16 spaces.
Once you have created multiple Spaces, you should have the Options > Assign to option in your Dock and can follow these steps:
    Assign apps to spaces
If you assign an app to a particular space, it opens in that space by default.
Press and hold an app’s icon in the Dock. You may have to first open the app from Launchpad to see its icon in the Dock.
From the shortcut menu that appears, do one of the following:
Have the app open in the current space: Choose Options > This Desktop.
The app appears only in that space. However, if you open the app in full screen, it appears in its own space.
    From:
OS X Yosemite: Work in multiple spaces
    Best Regards,
    Jeremy

  • App Switcher showing only apps from this space?

    Hi everyone
I use cmd-tab exclusively (because I have a windows and linux computer at home) and I integrate space into my workflow.
I am quite annoyed by Cmd-Tab (Application Switcher) because it displays all app windows from all spaces.
Is there a way to get App Switcher to display only apps from current space?

If you want to report this issue to Apple's engineering, send a bug report or an enhancement request via its Bug Reporter system. To do this, register as an Apple Developer—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Since you already have an Apple username/ID, use that. Once a member, go to Apple BugReporter and file your bug report or enhancement request. You'll get a response and a follow-up number; thus, starting a dialog with engineering.

  • Open app space

In leopard my apps opened up in different spaces, now in lion my apps open up in the same spaces (or desktops) but I can not set up what desktop to use.
I could set this in Preferences> Exposé and Spaces but now it missing. How can I do it?
    Sorry for my english.

You now have to create the new Desktops/Spaces and then add the apps while in the desired space.
    - Go to Mission Control and scroll up to the upper right hand corner of your display.
    - Click on the '+' sign to create a new Desktop.
    - To assign an app to it, go to the new Desktop and with the app active and running in the Dock, right-click on it and move to Options and 'Assign To:' This Desktop (or All Desktops if you wish)
You'll have to do this for every app and new Desktop.
Unfortunately, it's a step backwards in initial setup when compared to Spaces in 10.6.x

  • Disable force-space-shift when opening Apps/Docs?

I like it sometimes, and others not, so for me the solution would be greater control over whether I my space shifts to the Applications space, of which I just opened.
As it is, when I open Safari, while in Space 1, and Safari is set for Space 2, I'm automatically forced to Space 2. I don't always like this. Is there some right-click menu to open an app without going to it's space?

Me too post. This is driving me nuts after having used Virtue for a long time on Tiger (where you can turn this 'feature' off). Most frequently I just want to open a new terminal on a new desktop, it used to be a matter of cmd-tabbing to terminal and hitting cmd-n, now I have to zip to the last desktop with a terminal, make a new one, then go into spaces (or use cmd click on the title bar) and drag it to the new place. PITA.
I do like that Apple wants to make things simple, but removing basic configuration options has perhaps gone a little over the top in Leopard. I guess its easier for the (politically) to add stuff in later if there's a loud cry than to support tons of stuff no one uses untill the end of time.

  • Pages app unexpectedly quit whilst I was in the middle of a document. I can now not open it AT ALL. I find it's not just that particular document that won't open, but any of my Pages docs will not open using the current version of Pages. Any help?

Pages app unexpectedly quit whilst I was in the middle of a document. I can now not open it AT ALL. I find it's not just that particular document that won't open, but any of my Pages docs will not open using the current version of Pages. The reports of the app unexpectedly closing each time, automatically went to Apple, but I am not sure what happens with them then. Does anyone know how to help me with this? We live in a very isolated region so rely on internet help. Thanks

I also managed to read a few other discussions about Pages and files not being able to open. I actually went to the last back-up and restored the computer from that and everything seemed to work ok again, which is great!...advice from another discussion I think you may have been involved in PeterB. Thanks for the advice...also this advice, as I will make a note of trying to open using the Shift key if it happens again and see what happens...might be an easier first option than restoring from a back-up. Thans heaps for the help!
I was interested to read some of the other discussions where it was stated that Pages '09 seems to be a better option to use. I have both installed, so I will lkeep this in mind. Thanks heaps!

  • Apps not opening in the assigned Space but in the active Space

I'm not sure if this is normal behavior in Spaces or not:
I have Acrobat assigned to Space 1, Chrome assigned to Space 2. When I download a PDF via Chrome and then click to launch it, Acrobat opens in Space 2, not where my other Acrobat files are located and assigned (Space 1).
Is this the way Spaces is supposed to work? That an application or file opened via another application opens in the active Space rather than the assigned Space? With this behavior, I then need to drag the PDF document from the wrong Space to the right Space if I want to see it side by side with other PDF files. It seems to work this way for all of the different files as well as when I launch an application for the first time. It too opens in the active Space, not the assigned Space.
I've tried this with the "When switching to an application, switch to a space with open windows for the application" checked and unchecked and it makes no difference.
Am I missing something? Is this the way it's supposed to work?

Sometimes if you open a PDF through a web browser it opens as a window in the browser rather than the app. I don't have Acrobat or use chrome but if I open a PDF from a web site in Safari it just opens as a page in Safari rather than in Preview. Therefore if I assign Preview to a certain space and open a PDF in Safari it will open in any space that I have assigned to Safari. Or the active space if I haven't assigned any.

  • Can I prevent Mac OS from switching spaces to already-open apps?

I want to move to a space, and regardless of whether an app is open in another space, open a new window in the current space.  My context is that I'm setting up Automator workflows to open apps for each of my common tasks, and I want a space per workflow, but several workflows use some of the same apps. I'm using 10.9.4.

  • How to open Photoshop App CC on Mac desktop?

Downloaded CC trial onto my Mac OS X 10.8.4 yesterday.  From there, how do I open the Photoshop app from the CC on my desktop?  There is not the option to click on the app from the app list.  I can click on the "More Information" below the app which takes me to the internet.  I need to open the app itself on my desktop. Thank you!

Well, well, well.  For all of you newbies out there, on your apps page, just like an iPhone, there's a second
"dot" indicating a second page.  And there is the app.  Right there.  Thanks folks.

  • Where is my "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps" option?

I want to turn off the "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps" option but I don't see it in my General pane of the System Preferences, unlike what the on-line posts say. What am I missing?   Running 10.8.4

    Quit all of your apps.
Navigate to here: ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.loginwindow.*.plist (whereby * is a bunch of characters)
Click the file, do a File > Get Info and lock it using the Locked checkbox.
To reverse this setting, simply unlock the file!
Another helpful hint as well: Lion, by default, hides your ~/Library/ folder. To make it visible again without showing all of your other invisible files, simply open up Terminal and type:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library/

  • Desktop is missing and can't open finder since upgrading to 10.9.5

Since upgrading to OS 10.9.5 my desktop is missing (no drives or files) and I can't open finder or empty trash. I can only access programs in the dock. I tried zapping the PRAM and it fixed it but the next time I restarted same problem.
    iMac computer

    You might have corrupt .plists.
    Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist and com.apple.desktop.plist.  Move the .plists to your desktop.
Re-launch Finder by restarting the computer and test. If it works okay, delete the plists from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plists to where you got it  from, overwriting the newer one.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

I am in the same boat. I tried repeatedly to contact iTunes support, but was told each time that I had contacted the wrong deaprtment and they could not help me. There must be a way to still be able to use the iTunes store without paying for a system update. If not, I hope they will reimburse me the money I have in my acount.
