Open apps sometimes not seen in highlighted in dock or in ...

I've seen this on 2 different Macs I have running OS 10.8.1..
ie lets say I have Safari and a bunch of programs open and I decide to move to Text Edit..
Then I need to go back to Safari, when I do command-tab I don't see Safari shown in the display of apps?
I then do to the Dock and there's no highlight under then Safari app?
Yet Safari is open..
I click on the Safri icon in the dock or just click on a Safari window and I'm back.
Happens with other apps too - Anyone else seeing this?
I'll send to Apple Feedback - just thought I'd bring it up here.

Sounds like automatic Termination.
Apps that aren't being used (no windows open) are terminated, but the remain in memory for a period of time. During this time, they don't appear in the open Apps, but if you start them again, they pop to life like they weren't terminated. After the period of inactivity or if the system needs the resources they are using, they will be fully terminated.

  • Indesign CS4 double click the file opens app. but not file

    One of our systems that is running Win XP Pro SP3 with InDesign CS4 loaded and file associations fixed, when an INDD file is double clicked the application opens but the file does not. If we open INDD and go to file open and select the file it opens. Just not when double clicked. If I put the file on another system everything is fine. Anyone seen this before.

    I'm pretty much at a loss. You might want to make sure that the open action is programed correctly in Windows.
    Open Explorer and go to Tools > Folder Options... and scroll to .indd, then click the advanced button and select the Open action. Click Edit, and make sure that the "Application used to perform action" line includes "%1" (in quotes) after the path to InDesign. I believe the "confirm open after download" box should also be checked in the edit screen.
    If that's OK, I'm guessing it has to do with SP3. Doe you have SP3 installed on the machine where it works?

    Delete background apps from memory and Reset. Press the home button twice quickly, then slide all the window panes upwards to delete them from memory. Then Reset, hold both home and power buttons for about 10 seconds until the iPhone restarts itself. If still problem, Restore iPhone with iTunes on computer.

  • Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps will not stay unchecked

    I upgraded my early 2011 model 15" MBP to Lion and this new feature is resulting in lots of strange behavior when it comes to system start-up and when i launch apps afterwards.  For now, I want to simply shut this feature off, so I go to System Preferences > General and I uncheck the "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps" control.  If I then close and reopen system preferences, the check on this control is back!  I have tried various forms of other work-arounds such as locking the folders on an app by app basis in the ~/library/Saved Application State folder for the apps that act wierd and it sort of helped, but nothing seems allow me to just shut this off globally and make it stick.  Any thoughts on why I can't get the preference change to stick?

    The Preferences selection simply stops the applications themselves from relaunching (previous state) windows when you launch them manually.
    The log-out check box is for something entirely different. It stops the applications from relaunching, if they were open when you logged out, or shutdown.
    There is no way to keep that second behaviour from occuring as a default. Apple will have to make a change in Lion to make the change something you can set as a permanent preference.
    I use an automator script application to perform my shut-downs with one click. I have an alias for the script in my dock, right next to the Finder icon. The same script also "uncheck's" the box of which you are speaking.

    Try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
    If the Mail app still doesn't work after the iPad has restarted then try closing the app completely and see if it works when you re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Mail 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.

    Apps says there are apps to update with the number 4, I go to the App Store nothing shows up on the updates tab.  When I show purchased apps tab all, I see two that need updating and tap the update button and then the apps icon drops to two but still nothing there when opening the app.  Tried shutting off and turning on and did not do anything. 

    There have been numerous reports on the forum today regarding this issue. It seems to be an issue at Apple, but no information has been posted on the status site.

    - Have you updated the apps?  Some require updating to be compatible with iOS 5
    - Sometimes downloading/installing a new all resolves the problem.
    - Sometimes resetting does too. Nothing will be lost.
    Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
    least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

    ... command tab only shows Finder. I can navigate to the other 9 apps that are open with the mouse. Strange. I have repaired permissions, activity monitor shows nothing out of the ordinary.

    Open System Preferences/Keyboard&Mouse/Keyboard Shortcuts. Click; Restore Defaults. Quit System Preferences and reboot.
    See if that helps...
    If not, try deleting this file: com.apple.finder.plist /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot.

  • Pages not opening, App Store not loading, can't work today.

    Hello, recent Yosemite upgradee here.
    When ever I open the app store i get nothing, all blank. some times it doesn't open at all.
    I went to start working this morning and noticed when ever I clicked to open a pages document nothing happened. No pages icon appearing in the launch bar. Nothing. Opening pages does the same, nothing. Panicking a little because I can't really work without it and im not covered for apple support.
    Strangely enough Numbers works fine. I'm using Pages version 5.2.2.
    Any idea whats happening? Apple menu tells me i have 8 updates pending, i think one may be pages, but of course i can't get to it.

    Any problem with a 3rd party app is the responsibility of the app developer. Contact Instagram customer or technical support regarding whatever doesn't work with their app on your iPhone.

  • Right click Open With sometimes not working (Photoshop Elements 9, Windows Vista)

    We recently upgraded from Photoshop Elements 7 to Photoshop Elements 9. We are running Windows Vista.
    Last night, my wife was right clicking on JPEG images in her My Pictures subfolders and choosing "Open With" to open the files with Photoshop Elements. In some cases, this worked. In other cases she would right click the file, Adobe Photoshop Elements would start, but the picture itself would not display.
    I tested one of these pictures and was able to open it with other applications, and was able to open it by choosing "Open" from Photoshop Elements' file menu.
    Has anyone run into this before? Why are some pictures not opening when you right-click and use "Open With"?

    you can make PSE9 default program for opening any image on you vista machine.
    Then it souhld work fine.

    I noticed the open applications remain running in the background even after the device is restarted.
    This happens in android. There are two options "power off" - quick reboot with no apps killed
    "Restart" closes all apps and restart the device?
    Arent we getting the other option in iOS :p

  • Can't open apps with contextual menu, or dragging onto dock icon

    I've recently reinstalled Tiger and updated successfully with the 10.4.11 combo installer.
    I've discovered that when, for example, I use the contextual menu to open a jpeg with Photoshop CS, nothing happens. If I try to drag it onto the Photoshop icon in the dock, the app will open but the file won't.
    Double clicking the file opens it in Preview (default), but I sometimes want to do more than view it in preview - I want to edit it in PS. I can only open it from within PS. Also, when using Iphoto, even when I select external editor it won't open in Photoshop.
    This is a new quirk and I've never had the problem before. I'd appreciate any suggestions of how I can solve this. Many thanks, Karen

    Before I start trashing things, just to play it safe ... what are the consequences/downside of getting rid of those folders?
    Just move them to the Desktop incase we need for some unknown reasin to put them back.
    Should I just move them out one by one to see if I can isolate the problem?
    Yes, you could do that, but... I think some prefs help rebuilding other prefs if present.
    I have created a new "test user" - I guess I should log out/log in to see if the problem is still there before doing any throwing away of prefs, right?

  • Apps list not showing in snow leopard dock

    I dragged the applications icon/folder from the user to the right of the hash marks on the dock, but all I get when I click on it is a line with Options and Open in Finder,no apps list (though it's set for sort by name, display as folder and vieew as list, just as the documents and download folders are set - which both work fine).     If you had done what Captfred thinks, i.e. used the Applications folder in your user home folder instead of the one at the root (primary) level of the hard drive, the difference is -
    The Applications folder in the user home folder holds apps segregated for use only by that user's account - it's how apps can be restricted for some user accounts. The privelege settings in a given account set that up.
    The apps in the root level Applications folder are available to everyone.
    Typically, in a system which has no additional user accounts added to it, the Applications folder in the user home folder will be empty, or nearly so. In a one-user setup there's no need to segregate anything.
