Open .BMP files
Hi
On SP 2013
Having some BMP files ...now it opens up within IE
- how do I force it to open in Paint?
Issue
When you inserted an image, it was displayed as a thumbnail instead of a full image.
Solution
If the image you insert is not associated with the MS Paint application, it will not display correctly
To correct this issue, you will need to force a .bmp file extension association with MS Paint. Follow these steps:
In Windows Explorer, find a .bmp file and select it.
Right-click the .bmp file. Click Open With.
In the Open With dialog box, select MS Paint if it is in the list. If not, click Browse and search for the MS Paint application. It should be located in theC:\Windows\system32 directory.
Select the Always use this program to open the selected file check box.
Click OK.
Now the .bmp extension will be associated with MS Paint.
If you are not able to associate the .bmp extension with MS Paint, you can override the setting in the registry:
On the Start menu (Windows), click Run.
In the Run dialog box, enter regedit.
In the Registry Editor, locate the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.bmp
Right-click the (Default) entry. Click Modify.
In the Edit String dialog box, under Value data, enterPaint.Picture.
Click OK.

Opening bmp files in Lightroom 3.4.1
I have a bunch of bmp files that I made by scanning old 35mm slides. Photoshop opens them with no problem, lets me modify and save. Lightroom can't see them (NO photos found). LR does see tiffs made from the same bmp files. Do I take away from this that LR cannot deal with bmp files, or (I hope) am I just missing something basic?
I recently started scanning my old 35mm negatives and slides and use LR to process and catalog them. I purchased a fairly inexpensive Plustek 7600i scanner with Silverfast software, and use 48bit mode with ProPhoto RGB profile. This is about as close to RAW mode as you can get with a scanner. Even inexpensive film scanners use a 10bit/color (30bit) or higher bit depth analog converter, and 24bit scans (8bit/color) are throwing away the extra data. This helps to prevent "gaps" in the histogram from processing, which can cause posterization.
If you plan on doing any scanning in the future, and your scanner and software support 48bit mode, you might want to try using it along with a wide gamut profile like Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB. I import into Lightroom and make most of my adjustments there, but find Photoshop's cloning tools better for dust spot removal. I usually do the major spot removal and any cropping or rotation "destructively" in Photoshop, and resave the file. LR automatically updates and uses the new modified file. You can go back and forth between the two applications real-time and with relative ease. That way you can use the best of both applications.
You can also use this method to for further processing of your converted bitmap scan image files. -
Photoshop 7 can no open .bmp files?
Hi:
When I try to open a .bmp file using the PS7 file open method with the file dialog window set for all formats, no .bmp files appear in the list of files.
If in Windows Explorer a .bmp file is selected then the right click option of open with PS7 is used PS7 gives an error message.
I've read other posts about saving .bmp files in 8 bit mode but can find nothing in the forum or manual about opening a .bmp file.
How to do it?
Have Fun,
Brooke Clarke-------SOLUTION------
Thanks to Ed pointing to the file BMP.8BI I've found the solution.
That file was missing from the folder at:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop 7.0\Plug-Ins\Adobe Photoshop Only\File Formats
so PS7 could not work with .bmp files. The reason it was missing was an earlier version had a security bug. Adobe came out with a new version the top of the page looks like:
Photoshop CS2, Photoshop CS3 and Photoshop Elements 5 updates to address security vulnerabilities
Release date: July 10, 2007
Vulnerability identifier: APSB07-13
CVE number: CVE-2007-2244, CVE-2007-2365
Platform: All Platforms
Affected software versions: Photoshop CS2, Photoshop CS3, and Photoshop Elements 5.0
http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb07-13.html
I downloaded the patch zip file for Photoshop Elements 5.0:
http://download.macromedia.com/pub/security/bulletins/apsb07-13/win/ps_security_update.zip
and after unziping it moved BMP.8BI into the File Formats folder and it seems to work fine in PS7.

"foxit" took a notion to auto update - Adobe will no longer open scanned .bmp files
So, Foxit had apparently been installed on a users PC for some time. It decided to update itself over night? Anyway, the woman came in the next morning and Adobe Reader was no longer installed, assuming foxit had uninstalled it *so thankful*. Foxit would open the .bmp files and allow view as a pdf. Of course Adobe is what she was used to and needed.
So,
Re-installed Adobe reader XI
Scanned files would open normally from .bmp and give an option to "save as pdf" - (I'm not sure what she was able to open the files in (im assuming adobe))
After the Adobe re-install this will not work any more. I've taken the scanned .bmp file straight from the scanner and set it to .pdf and get error message " either not a supported file type or the file has been damaged. could have been sent as email and has been decoded incorrectly"
Could this have anything to do with fox it changing something?
*I've set .bmp file association to default to reader*I can't tell exactly what you have going there but Adobe Reader does not and never has opened .bmp files. So whatever you were using to open the bmp and save to pdf is what is having the problem here. That wouldn't be Adobe Reader but something else.

You can't just take a .bmp file and change the extension to .pdf. That is why Reader is giving you that error.
Assuming I understand what you are asking here...
Also, I would strongly suggest that the user disallow updates like that happening when she doesn't give permission first. Set an administrator password that has to be entered before the update. Not doing that is a recipe for disaster. -
Client can't open my BMP files
Howdy,
I've been using my current system to create software interface graphics (buttons, icons, etc. ) but recently my clients who are all on Windows are not able to open my BMP files. They can open PSD and PNG and JPG files, to problem. I need the BMPs because of the alpha channel.
Now, don't laugh, this "old, basic" system has served me well for many years and I'm in no mood or financial situation to upgrade, so I'm hoping that the problem is not related to the age of the system. I'm running:
CS1 (Photoshop 8.0, MIcrosoft Bitmap File Format 8.0) on a G5 iMac with system 10.4.11
Thanks for any suggestions you might have.I imagine that that error code 14 was accompanied by some verbiage. It is often the case that said verbiage actually points you in the right direction as to what the problem is. The error code alone is only going to be meaningful to people who have run into it. I don't think there's a place to go where the error codes are explained -- although there might be.
Ask your client what the complete message was.
Also, have her hold down Command and choose About InDesign from the InDesign menu. She should see something like:
Adobe InDesign Version CS3(5.0.3.662)
immediately under Application Info. Compare what she has with what yours says.

[CS3] can't open or save bmp file
Help, i can't open or save bmp file in my CS3 extended. It is saying that is impossibile operate the request cause the file type is wrong.
That's unbelievable !!!
Even if i try to save a total new and blank work does not allow me save in bmp ( the option is even not shown !!)
I guess some update has screwed up the configuration but i don't now who to solve it. i'm going MAD !!!!
Thanks for your help, i'll appreciate it
Andrea ( from Milan )I found the Solution. Please read the entire post.
Same Problem, I can't save the image. I just made a new desktop wallpaper, and I go to Save As.. and it does not show ANY image formats.
-I can choose to save as..
--Photoshop
--Cineon
--D3D/DDS
--Dicom
--Large Document Format
--Photoshop PDF
--Photoshop Raw
--PNG
--TIFF
That is all there is in the format drop down menu.
Image is 1024x768, Locked background layer, 16 bit colour.
I recently installed Xp Service pack 3, and as far as I know, I could save them before that.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, so please reply to this or send me an email at ---(Email Addres Deleted)---
*EDIT*
Turns out that the image needs to be 8 Bits/Channel. To do this, select the image and follow these menu instructions..
-Image
--Mode

Feh showing black images when opening certain .bmp files
Hi all,
I've been using feh (I'm using imagemagick too) from quite a bit and today I noticed it shows plain black images when opening certain .bmp files, those files are obtained from a Java WebService and they may not be correcty formed, still firefox can correctly visualize them. Would it be possible to make feh correctly display them ?I've set Photoshop to ask me if there's a conflict with embedded color schemes but it doesn't ask when opening this file. So I presume it doesn't use any specific profile. (Can I check this directly somehow?)
EDIT: I've now set to ask if there is no profile embedded and Photoshop now says that the image has no embedded RGB profile.
My color profile within Photoshop is set to sRGB which is the default for my display.
When I try switching to other RGB profiles in the list, the colors change but the distortions are still there no matter which profile I choose. -
How to open a BMP file in a JLabel???
Hi all,
My problem is that I want to set a BMP file as icon of a JLabel, but the Class ImageIcon doesn't support BMP files.
Thank you all.
Marco Aurlio
from Brazil
we'll win the FIFA World Cup!!The easiest way to do that is to get a graphics package that can convert a BMP file to a JPG file. Some versions of Microsoft Paint will do that, but you should be able to find another one if you need it.
I hope Brazil wins, but if they don't it will be because the referees give it to Korea. -

Double-click and drag don't open image files
Hi,
I'm having problems loading images in Preview and Adobe apps (CS1).
From Finder, I can double click to open an image in Preview but it only opens the first image, and won't load more than one. I've tried changing the preferences to "open groups of images in the same window" or "open all images in one window." Neither solve the problem.
My adobe apps won't open a file when I double click it from the finder at all. I have to use the "open" command from within the application to open an image file.
I am a designer and photographer trying to browse groups of images at once and this is driving me crazy! I have tried copying over different preference files from my old computer (a powerbook G4), and I'm wondering if I either failed to copy the right one or copied something that is interfering with the shortcut actions.
The interesting part is, that the same actions are working fine for other kinds of files -- for example, I can open multiple word documents by double clicking their icons in Finder.
Any suggestions appreciated. Thank you.
Amy HengstHi Amy
What kind of files are these? If I wanted to open multiple images in Preview (be they BMP, JPEG, PSD, whatever) I would select them and drag onto the Preview icon in the Dock which opens the first image in a single window with the remaining images in a 'thumbnail drawer' to the right (like you get with big PDF documents).
On the other hand if I double-click, 10 to 1 it would launch Photoshop which I use as an image editor only, not an image manager or viewer. You can of course change the application which any document uses to open it, with the Get Info window. But if you use more than one application (as I do - PS to edit, Preview to just view), then click-and-drag onto the Dock might be your best bet. -
Read BMP File Requires Absolute Path
I noticed something today regarding the Graphics Formats, Read JPG File, Read PNG File and Read BMP File vi's. It seems that when reading a JPG or PNG file, a relative path is OK, but when reading a BMP file, an absolute path is required. When the path only contains the filename, it returns:
Error 1430
"Open/Create/Replace File in Read BMP File Data.vi->Read BMP File.vi->ReadImageFileTest.vi"
I tried a simple test that uses either the relative or absolute path, trying to read 3 different files in the same directory as the VI. Only the Read BMP File errors. Of course, the simple work around is to always use the full pathname to a file. Is this only on my system? Is this a known bug or feature or expected behavior?
I'm using LabVIEW 8.2 on Windows XP.
Thanks!
B-)

Can't open .3DS files in CS6 extended
Hi, I'm trying to open .3DS files in Photoshop CS6 extended, but it is giving me the error message: "could not complete your request because 3d functionality is currently disabled due OpenGL being disabled"
At first it opened a few files and worked fine, then it just stopped opening them and now only displays the error message.

Even in a video card you have to get a high end version to have enough power to do that. But almost all video cards have 2 connectors.
If you look at the back of the nVidia card it should have 2 connectors for monitors, but they are probably not the same, so you may need an adapter for one. If you do not have the manual type in the model number on line to see how it works. -
Converting multiple bmp files to PDF using acrobat 7.0 from DOS prompt
Hi,
I have a requirement to convert multiple BMP files in a folder to one PDF.
I can use multiple file conversion option in acrobat to combine and convert them to one PDF .. but I have 2000 such folder to conver to PDF.
PDF should be name after the folder name.
Is there a to automate this in acrobat.. or can we run this conversion from DOS prompt using commands.. so that I can create a bat file and have them converted. Pls let me know.
Thanks
PugazhI have not tried BMP files, but do JPeg, GIF, TIFF, and PNG files regularly. I simply open Acrobat, then select the graphics files in explorer and drag & drop to Acrobat. I then organize the graphics if needed (using the pages tab) and save to a PDF.

I had had CS5.1 and CS6 on this PC. I uninstalled CS5.1; now, I can open common file types (eg.g, *.jpf, *.bmp) directly from CS6. However, Bridge 6 triggers an error message to the effect that "Windows cannot find (....\CS5.1) - in other words, Windows still wants to associate file types in Bridge *^* to CS 5.1 - not to CS6. As a result, bridge is effectively dead in the water.
Yet another case of what happens when you uninstall an old version with a newer one present.
The old version takes a lot of registry items with it on the way out, leaving empty pointers to itself rather than the new version still present. It's as if the old version uninstaller can't imagine the possibility of anything newer, so it just says to the OS "Photoshop is no longer installed". It's not just file associations, Lightroom users have reported similar problems with "Edit in Photoshop".
Sometimes these pointers can be easily re-established, but more often a full uninstall/reinstall is needed, maybe with a run of the CC cleaner tool tossed in for good measure.
This happens all the time, posts like this trickle through the forum at a steady state. I can't imagine why this has never been acknowledged, and why Adobe officials keep saying that it's perfectly safe to uninstall previous versions. It's not. Yes, it could well be that the bug, or whatever you prefer to call it, is ultimately in the Windows registry. But this happens with such solid regularity that some official recognition would be in order.
The safe procedure is to always uninstall in strict reverse version order, then reinstall. -
Photoshop cs6 running extremely slow on opening a file. have reset prefs and set type to none. have to force quit most of the time.
I'm experiencing the same trouble. Photoshop takes 5 minutes to open then runs fine.
I recently bought a new iMac AND updated to Adobe Master Collection CS6. My concern is that PhotoShop now takes 5 minutes to open. The Photoshop desktop pops up immediately, but the moment you click on a tool or try to open a file (no matter the size) results in the spinning wheel for five minutes before you can do anything. After that, Photoshop appears to work fine.
What I’ve done:
Ran Adobe updater
Reset Photoshop Preferences
Validated all fonts and removed any trouble fonts
Ran the font test
Set font preview size to none
Cleared the Photoshop type cache and system cache
Disabled Symantec Endpoint
Tried running with the GPU processor on/off and in basic
Tried opening Photoshop with optional third party plug-ins turned off (still took five minutes but this time I didn’t even get the Photoshop desktop view until AFTER the five minutes)
I’m wondering since I migrated the files form my old computer (and older versions of Master Collection) did something get corrupted.
