Open Buddy List instead of Chat Window

I remember at least with iChat, when you clicked on the icon in the dock, you could have it open the Buddy List to pick a name to start a conversation. Now with Messages, everytime I click on the icon, it just takes me to a new chat window. I've looked around in the options and can't find a way to default to opening the Buddy List instead of a window, even if I move a particular chat account above iMessage in the Accounts window.
Any workarounds? If not, I'd like to see this make it to the feature request list.
Thanks!

Hi,
The Window Menu (once Messages in Launched) and the keystrokes listed remains the only place that this can be done.
The option to Chose any Window that is Open from the DOCK icon has gone  (Used mainly when the app was Not "front")
The other method of using the Menu bar icon drop down to get to individual buddy List also does not work as it does not list which Buddy list is "Front"  (you can opt to show or not Show the Bonjour Buddies (making Bonjour the "Front" Buddy list but it does not tell which is when the Bonjour one is not)
Like you I am somewhat "iChat Centric" about this.

  • "Edit Original" opens in Paint instead of Photoshop (Windows)

I've found a solution to this problem, so I wanted everyone to find it. In the older Windows programs, you can choose which program opens in editing, but in Windows 7 that feature is disabled. If you download the following program, click File Type Settings > Context Menu > then, for example "PNG" extension-- you can choose which program OPENS a PNG, which program EDITS a PNG, etc. That way you can view a photo in Windows Photo Viewer, but edit in Photoshop. Brilliant!

Hi, I've downloaded the program, it's just sitting there and give this message when I double-click it! Even when using "Run as administrator".

  • Ichat 4.0.8.  chat windows will not open

Hi i have a weird problem with ichat 4.0.8. on mac os x 10.5.8. i can see my buddy list, and i have people added. i can video chat and audio chat with them.
what i can't do is type text in a chat window because the chat window does not open. double-clicking on the name, clicking on the "A" at the bottom of the buddy list, "send instant message" in the menu all don't work. Also, when my friends send me a message, all i see is a red number pop up on the ichat icon, but i can't read the message because the chat window won't open. any suggestions?

    Hi,
There are several possibles with this.
A Red Button at the top of a Window closes the window.
With Chats this normally ends them as well.
However some Windows become Hidden such as the Buddy List(s) itself.
If a window is Hidden then it will still be listed in the Window Menu of iChat (Below the Logged in Screen Names)
The Screen Names here have Keystrokes listed to bring them back.
Other windows you have to click on the Menu item itself.
This may not bring the window in to view - because of the next issue.
If you have two Monitors and have Mirroring turned Off you could have dragged the Window to the other monitor where it will be even if the monitor is not On.
A sort of related issue is if you had a Group chat with the Participants drawer open and then moved the Group chat window to the other side of the screen.
When the drawer is first used it pops out on the side nearer to the middle of the Screen so the Window can be placed further out.
Changing sides of the Screen will put this on the "wrong side" and it is possible that the window itself is Off Screen (Particularly if you use Direct IM to one Buddy).
If none of these explains the issue then delete com.apple.ichat.plist from your Home Folder/Library/Preferences (Little House iCon/Library...)
Restart iChat. Amongst other things this .plist holds the window positions.
    One Last thought.
    Chax.
This has the option to set an iChat Window as always in Front (Gets added to the Window Menu).
If the Buddy list is this Window and on the top right of the Screen then Incoming Invite will be behind the Buddy List. (Each iChat window if clicked to highlight can be set with this option and iChat will then keep the Last one set as the very front as well as keeping all those set in front of other apps (windows) )
    I hope this helps.

  • Buddy list shows up in dashboard rather than on desktop

strange. Selecting any command such as change picture makes the dialogue open in desktop correctly.
    Anyone have experience this?

    Hi,
iChat has always worked on the premise it Remembers where the Windows were last time it was Opened.
    For Instance.
You start up iChat and all the Buddy lists appear on the Desktop (presuming they are separate)
If you use a red Button on one of them then the Buddy List "Disappears"
iChat is Not Quit by this action nor is that Buddy list logged out (See Window Menu or iChat menu > Accounts).
If you then shut down the computer ichat will get QUit as part of this process (no matter which OS version)
When you Restart iChat, it will remember that one Buddy List was "Hidden"
The Window Menu will show it Logged in (As will the iChat menu > Accounts) and it will be ticked in the Preferences > Accounts.
Using the DOCK to bring up the Buddy List only does so for that session of iChat.
A similar effect is seen when you use the Amber button on the Buddy list window rather than the red one.
Using the Window Menu and the Keystrokes listed (CMD and a number) will bring it back "permanently"
Lion and the setting in System Preferences > General Section that refers to remembering Open Windows takes this to All apps.
    Summary.
The Red Button does not log out a Buddy list or Quit the App
    Same for the Amber Button.
Using either Button will either Hide or place the window in the DOCK
If iChat is Quit at this stage is separately or by a Shut Down of the computer when ichat is restarted later it will remember "where" the window was even if this is Hidden.
Use the Window menu and the Keystrokes to bring the window back Permanently
Using the DOCK item brings it back only for that iChat session (until Shut Down or ichat is Quit)

  • Changing buddy list font

Is it possible to change the font size of the names in your buddy list in iChat? I would like them to be a bit smaller than they are by default...

    Hi,
The Buddy List Status message Font (Lucida Grande) and the Buddy names font (Helvetica) are not changable. Sorry.
The Buddy list can be shorter if you choose not to Show Buddy Pics and the Show Audio and Show Video Status items in the View menu (when the Buddy List is the Front window)

  • My i chat balloon is on the bottom of my computer and it will not open - I have even called my daughter to see if she can open it by inviting me to chat and my buddy list is gone!!!!!  I don't know what I hit or where I go from here???   But it seem to me

I can not even open it under settings?   I am at a total loss??????  HELP??

    Hi,
With iChat open go to the Window Menu
This should list logged in Buddy Lists (Accounts)
Use the keystrokes listed to bring the Buddy list back in to view.
If there are no accounts shown to be logged in open the iChat Menu itself and go to Accounts and choose one.
A Chat window may show if you are using iChat 6 in Lion and closed the app with that chat window open (as Lion reopens the app in the "State"  it was in before it was Quit or the computer was shut down.)

  • How to get Buddy List window NOT to open upon startup of ichat?

I've got ichat to load automatically whenever I boot up, but I do not want the buddy list window to open when it does load. Is there a way to have ichat startup automatically whenever the system starts up, but NOT have the buddy list window thrown up onto the screen while doing so? Thanks for any help!

    Hi Ryan,
    Start up iChat.
    Close the Buddy list.
    Quit iChat.
iChat should now remember that the window was closed when the app was shut down.
Just ensure the Buddy list is closed when shutting down iChat.

  • Can I add my windows vaio to my i chat buddy list?

I have a sony vaio with a camera and would like to add it to my buddy list Is this possible. I have bonjour installed on the pc but don't know how to access it any help would be great.

Verizon can only add devices to a plan that have a VZW modem installed already.  If it was not designed for the VZW network then you will have to consider a Jetpack or some other mobile broadband device to connect to VZW for you first.
For a list of currently supported tablets:

  • How do I fix my ichat? My buddy list appears, but whenever I try to click on a buddy to chat, IChat won't let me. Nothing appears. When I try to click on "File" - "New Chat" Also nothing appears. What's wrong?

My buddy list appears, but whenever I try to click on a buddy to chat, IChat won't let me. Nothing appears. It won't let me chat regularly via text, or by video/audio chat. Even when I click on File -> New Chat, still nothing shows up! But, when I look at how many chats I have open, it says I have "X" amount of chats open! But nothing is there.........
If somebody tries to video chat me from my buddy list, I can see the request.... and then the video chat will work. But I cannot request anybody and if they send me a regular text ichat, ichat won't deliver it to me.
Somebody please help me I've tried so many things and nothing is working!!!!! :/

    Hi,
This sounds like it is about Window positions.
iChat has Default places for Incoming Invites.
Video is always top Center of your Screen
Audio and Text chats are Upper right with the Audio slightly lower than Text Chats.
Secondary invites are sort of Stacked like when you open multiple files from the same App.
Your outgoing Windows are "Remembered" as to where the last one was when you used it.
This can be an issue if you use your Mac with a second display and turn Off Mirroring.
You windows can get "left" on the other screen.
Go to System Preferences > Displays and turn On Mirroring and the windows should come back to one Screen/display.
If this does not help go to your Home Folder/Library/Preferences and delete (Drag to Trash) com.apple.ichat.plist and restart iChat.
Unfortunately you will need to reset any iChat Preferences you have changed from defaults.

  • How can I see my jabber buddy list as a default and not a new message window on my message app??

I recently got my OS reinstalled and since then I had a multitude of issues.
    1) my texts kept showing up on my macbook pro so I took my cell number off the preferences on messages on macbook.  Can I still have people facetime me using my cell phone number?
    2) I do see my jabber buddy list when I click on the message center as a default.  I keep getting the new message window, can i set a default that when i click on it I see who is online vs. having to go to windows and select buddy list all the time??
    3) what is bonjour and why would i want to use it?

    Hi,
    Re 1)
The settings for Messages > iMessages are separate from the FaceTime ones on both Mac and iOS devices.
    Re 2)
If you have a Jabber (Google or Facebook Chats included) ID in Messages > Preferences > Accounts you can go to the Window Menu and display them.
By default they are a combined list (Any AIM, Jabber, Yahoo or Bonjour account that is logged in)
In the Preference > General section you can untick the item that gathers them into one list to show them separately.
They also appear in the Window Menu separately with their open CMD + # keystrokes.
Once you have them On show quit the app that way.
It will "Remember" that they were on Show the next time you open the app.
    Re 3)
Bonjour is a process on the Mac that "sees" all other Macs on your LAN and shows them in the Side bar of the Finder window as "automatic" Shares.
In iChat and Messages it is an included account that cannot be deleted
If Enabled it can have it's own Buddy List (see 2) )
It shows the Names of the peopel singed in on the other Macs on your LAN that are also using iChat or Messages with the Bonjour Account Enabled.
The name is taken from the My Card in the Address Book or Contacts app.
The My Card should have the Mac User's details (you on Your computer when Logged in) and a head and Shoulders icon.
    I have three computers
One is running iChat 4.x.x and on that machine (running Leopard) the My Card calls me Ralph G4 as it is running on G4 tower.
My Laptop has me as Ralph MacBook Pro
This iMac I am posting from has the My Card of Ralph Johns
On this computer if I have iChat running on the other I see Ralph G4 and Ralph MacBook Pro as "Buddies"
It can do everything that the AIM and Jabber logins can do.
Text Chat, Audio Only Chat, Video Chat, Screen Sharing, File Transfers etc.

    Hi,
In the Finder use the Go Menu > Go to Folder and enter ~/Library/Preferences
Find the com.apple.ichat.plist and the associated .lockfile
    Drag them to the Trash.

  • How? - Chat "Participants" list on left of window, not the default right

The one way I have done is to click View --> Hide Chat Participants, then move the window to the far right side of the screen, then click View --> Show Chat Participants. This forces the list to slide out from the left of the window, not the right side.
This works perfectly but does not stay set that way. I was able to do this in the past, but how can I force the chat participants list to always display to the left of the chat window instead of the right?
This is a new issue since moving to a MacBook Pro from a G5, however the G5 was also running iChat 3.1.4 on OS 10.4.6. What gives?

    Hi Brent,
iChat will work windows like this.
All types of incomoing invites has specific screen places
Video is top center. Text and Audio is top right of the screen.
No matter what you do to these windows including changing the position and in your case the Participants drawer it will always open a new chat in the same place.
Out going ones are different. With these they will open at the point you last closed one.
The group Text chats also tend to remember which side the drawer was.
I know no way of changing this behaviour.
The defaults for this are held in com.apple.ichat.plist
In theory the App can write to this file and achive and edit.
Property List Editor that come if you install the Developer Tools is supposed to Edit them (.plists) and of course you get some hidden preferences in these files that can be edited by using Terminal like this one.
I have never found the Prpperty List Editor successful.
I don't know enough about Unix to suggest how to command the .plist from Terminal.
The Original .plist will be recreated if you delete the current one if you play with this yourself and have problems. (on the next restart of iChat)

  • How do I set TB's default startup view to show e-mail message list instead of only the latest opened message?

Hi, I just now installed Thunderbird 24.3 and am using Thunderbird for the first time ever. From having had Outlook Express before, I am used to the app opening to my full list of mail boxes (Inbox, Sent, Car, Cat, etc.) upon clicking the app's program icon. In TB, however, I am instead finding that TB opens showing the *latest e-mail message I had opened* -- no list of mail boxes. I end up having to click the upper left arrow in TB numerous times until I can no longer click leftward any more, at which point the tab appears that names the latest e-mail message that I had opened previously, at which time I can then *click* on that tab, which magically opens the list of my e-mail boxes that I wanted to show in the first place. I would like avoiding this rigamarole in the future. Thanks for any insights.

Thanks so much for your speedy, thorough, and detailed reply. I have done as you suggested, deciding to go with the "open message in existing window" option. How great is that! One reason I chose to go with Thunderbird when I changed from an XP PC to Windows 7 (besides TB being free) was the clearly written support and easy forum posting method I saw online. This continues to hold true -- Still so glad I chose Thunderbird! Thanks again.

  • Your client does not support opening this list with windows explorer - related to multiple uploads?

    Hi folks -
I've read through some threads regarding "Your client does not support opening this list with windows explorer" and it seems a lot of folks have a lot of solutions throughout the forum posts.  Is there anything official or semi-official regarding
    this?
I've tried a lot of the fixes including:
checking to see if the WebClient service is on
modifying so-and-so registry (I've since changed them back since they seem to have no effect)
and changing various settings in Internet Options including making sure the site is in the Local intranet zone.
I could live without this functionality but just recently my upload-multiple-files functionality in SharePoint 2010 has also gone away (red x instead of directory UI).  I wonder if it's related somehow and could give us a clue.
If it helps I'm using various browsers but of the IE flavor 8 and 9 32-bit as the base for testing this.

For SharePoint 2013 (so could apply to 2010 as well), my problem was that I was trying to "Open with Explorer"
something that probably can't be opened with Explorer. In my case, I just wanted to open my team's Shared Documents with Explorer. I found that when I first log into SharePoint and view the page, I'm presented with those Shared Documents, but also other things
    as well.
To get "Open with Explorer" to work, I must click "Shared Documents" under the Libraries heading on
the left. Then, all the other stuff (Links, Getting Started, etc.) go away and I'm focused on my team's shared documents. From there, I can go up to the Library Tools section in the ribbon, choose the Library tab in the ribbon, and click Open with Explorer.
    Works like a champ on Windows 7 64-bit, running IE 9 32-bit.
Unfortunately that's not what was going on in my case.  One obvious way to check is to see if other people or other computers can Open with Explorer.  In my case it was just this one machine on my desk that had the issue.
