OPEN Captioning in DVDSP

I have searched and searched and was wondering if there is a way to open caption in DVDSP. I have gotten scc captions to play but cannot get a difinitive answer if there is a way to imbed the captions in SP so that they are always displayed with no choice or decoding with the TV or DVD player. Yes, open captioning. PLEESE, help.

The only way I've seen this done is to use a third party software, (like Mac Caption PRO) which is very expensive and burn the captions into the video, prior to Mpeg2 encoding. This mantains the positioning and scrolling characteristics of captioning in the video. I have done this, with some educational video's I've done in the past.
The cost for Mac Caption Pro is high, ($5000.00 US.) Being that I'm an educational institution, our cost was about half the list price above, (educational price breaks can be negotiated directly with the company, which makes the software.)

  • Closed and Open Caption

Does anyone know if there is a way to display closed caption with in FCP??? I work with allot of captioned spots and will normally have to make low res files where my clients will want to see the caption data on screen. At this point I have to output to tape through my caption decoder to make a open caption version, then re-encode that to send out.

there's no function within fcp to read the CC data to make an open caption master. you would need Closed Captioning software such as Mac caption to generate an open caption dub in software.

  • AS7100 Open Caption

Trying to get the AS7100 (6.3.0.30702) to stream H.264 TS with Open Caption.  If I select 608: CC1/CC2 and view the stream I can see captioning on subtitles track 1 through VLC.   If I then select Open Caption to burn caption in, the resulting output does not contain the Open Caption.
Wondering if anyone else has managed to get Open Caption to work?
    Thanks,

    Yo B,
Since I'm the developer of Subbits, may I ask what you find difficult in spotting?
You have JKL control (although on the numeric keypad, use 4 5 6).
Use (numeric keypad) 7 and 8 for MarkIn and MarkOut.
There are also shortcuts to preview the title, or go back a few seconds and start playing, all while you still have full control over the keyboard to type in your translation.
Also, there are functions not found on a regular title generator, like moving parts of the text to the previous or next title, or join/split titles.
Extremely fast IMHO. It was written EXACTLY for the work you need to do now.
(btw, 100 titles is nothing. A normal half hour show has an average of about 300 titles, the show i'm working on right now has close to one thousand...)
Subbits is in use with the Dutch broadcaster VPRO, for web (flash) video as well as FCP to output to tape.
Perhaps you don't grasp the concept. Feel free to give me a call. 024 3553311
(and yes, I do speak Dutch)
As for the GUI bug, I'm working on that, but since I'm not able to reproduce it here, it is a bit of a wild guess what is happening. I hope to have worked it out in the latest version. (Still in beta, as it can also output Closed Caption files)
    Try this version:
    http://www.videotoolshed.com/?page=products&pID=36
(It is set by default to NTSC and CC mode, you must switch back to Pal and normal subtitle mode)

  • Open caption a video

    Hello,
I have a short video and a .scc file for closed captioning and I need to turn the video into an open captioned video for compression.
Is this possible in Final Cut Studio Pro?
    Thanks

No. You need to get MacCaption to embed the file into the QT. But then you can use FCP to output that to tape. But you add the file to whatever FINISHED QT you have..be it small web or full res for output to tape.

  • Quicktime Will Not Open Caption Files??

I tried to locate this specific issue in the dicussion forums, but did not find sometihng similar or an answer. My apolgies in advance if I overlooked a similar post.
I have videos that I have captioned that will not open correctly on other computers (in QT), besides my own. I have added captions as a text track and made adjustments to their positioning on the screen. When others open the QT files from another computer, you can either just see the text track and the movie is a white box, or QT will simply not open the file stating this is not in a format that QT understands.
I noticed there is additional codecs listed with these problematic files, specifically VP6F, MPEG Layer 3, Text codecs.
My question what is the best way for me to remove or change the codec so anyone with QT can view? I have a workaround where I place the captioned QT into Screenflow and re-export, which removes the text codec and will work fine on other computers. I just want to see if there is something I can do in QT/QT Pro to avoid this workaround.
    Thank you in advance.

Your files are MPEG-2 and you need additional software to view them in QuickTime:
    http://apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2
and a different application than iMovie to convert the audio portion:

  • Can't open caption properties

I cannot open or view the properties for caption boxes in a
Captivate 3.0 file I'm working with. I've tried double-clicking the
object in the timeline, right-clicking it and choosing Properties
in the stage area, and selecting it then clicking Edit, Properties.
    When I try, nothing happens.

    Hi LeeannHill
I see you replied after this post with an issue where
Captivate was closing. I'm guessing that it's probably related to
this. So let's wait and see what results from that before tackling
    this one.

  • Video with subtitle from DVDSP export to quicktime?

Need to know how can I export video with subtitle (specific clip) from DVDSP to quicktime for website? I use FCP to edit the video but not have subtitle on FCP. I want to see video with subtitle as open caption on web. How?

In DVDSP, turn on the Force Subtitles button to embed them into the video.
Burn a Disk Image instead of a DVD and rip to your format of choice in MPEG Streamclip.
You can go back and uncheck the Force button if you want the final DVD to have the option of playing without subtitles should the viewer choose to do so.

  • How do I convert a MS Word doc into Closed Caption scc (or other) format?

I have already constructed a number of videos and we now want to add sub titles. I have the complete transcript on a word document.
I've seen all the videos on how to do it. But how do I get my content into Closed Caption formats so I can add them?
    Any help would be appreciated.

If you mean wanting to work with subtitle "Open Captions" , Premiere pro does not support subtitle Open Captions" right now.
If you are talking about adding "Closed Captions" -- you can add captions from scratch to your project using Premiere Pro. Go File-> New-> Captions and pick CEA-608, CEA-708, or Teletext, and off you go. Go here for more information:
Adobe Premiere Pro Help | Closed Captioning
If you have a lot of captions, I suggest you find a caption authoring solution from a 3rd party -- there are some free/ shareware ones out there. Look around the forums to see what other people are using to author closed captions.
    Good luck!

  • Does Closed Captioning display differently from one Player/TV to another?

    Hi Everyone,
We just completed our first project at our facility that involved Closed Captioning from an .SCC file produced by CPC and when we preview a DVD Test of the project, the captions are not displaying as expected. We received a VHS preview copy which display the captions fine, but when we look at the DVD Test in the Apple DVD Player, the captions are not justified in a consistant manner, and sometimes a couple appear as if they were haphazardly placed on the screen.
Is possible that Captioning as how it is interpreted/displayed might vary from one TV or DVD Player to another?
Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance, everyone.
    Regards,
    -James-

    UPDATE:
So far I've tested the DVD created with Closed Captions from the *.scc file, and my findings are that the PC software I've tested in closely match that of the VHS open-caption dub that the captioning company provided us. I have tried the VLC Player on the Mac, but have not had success in enabling the captions, nor been able to find any posts on the VLC support forum.
I've also been successful at finding and testing a DVD Player that can display the captions on the DVD, and find that they play similarly to that on both the VHS open-caption an PC Playback, but the position on the screen is slightly different.
Does anyone have any other experience with Closed Captioning that could either offer insight to the working theory that each TV/DVD Player/Computer DVD Software platform interprets closed captions differently from one another?
    Regards and thanks in advance,
    -James-

  • Premiere will not import any of the recommended Caption formats

I have so far used qt.txt files to add open captions to my video projects.
I would like to work with captions within Premiere Pro and have watched Adobe's video on how to do it.
Recommended formats are .scc but several others are supposedly supported.
I have tried to import .scc files and various flavors of xml files and adobe caption files.
None of them are recognized as valid formats in my application.
Do I need a plugin that is not installed? Or enable something or another? or why would I not be able to import the files?
    Thank you on beforehand.

By the way I am using CS6
That would be the problem. Closed Captioning support was completely overhauled in CC 7.0. Previously, support for captions was very limited. The workflow was simply to select a sequence in the Project panel, go to Sequence>Closed Captioning>Attach. You could then enable display of the captions in the Program Monitor, but you could not edit the caption content or control timing in any way.

  • Movies in the right format and closed caption

As you know, movies in iTunes are not formatted to be watched using a regular TV Screen, but rather to be watched using ipod. As a result, the quality of the picture of movies purchased in iTunes but watched on AppleTV in a regular TV is very poor, rather awful indeed. Can you tell me when are you planning to sell High definition Movies, or at least a higher picture quality format, in iTunes?
Also, isn't it a federal requirement to have closed captions in movies that are presented on TV for the hearing impaired? When are you planning to closed captioned your movies? Thank you

As you know, movies in iTunes are not formatted to be watched using a regular TV Screen, but rather to be watched using ipod. As a result, the quality of the picture of movies purchased in iTunes but watched on AppleTV in a regular TV is very poor, rather awful indeed.Strange. I have no problem watching them on a 42" plasma screen. My only complaint is with my oldest "Baseline" rofile (320 x 240) files which I created at half the recommended dvideo data rate to save storage space on my iPod. Even then, these files are "viewable" if not up to the minimum standards demanded by some users. In this case the answer is obvisou -- don't buy or use the product if it doesn't measure up to your espectations.
Can you tell me when are you planning to sell High definition Movies, or at least a higher picture quality format, in iTunes? The manner of your question seems to imply that you consided this forum to be an Apple Corporate area for direct communication between employees and the general public -- it isn't. We, like you, are just fellow users. While it is true that Apple owns and maintains the boards, they are for the purpose of peer-to-peer self-help.
Also, isn't it a federal requirement to have closed captions in movies that are presented on TV for the hearing impaired? When are you planning to closed captioned your movies? The best place to answer this question would be by reading the ADA regulations which are available on-line. Even if specifically covered, it would then behoove you to address your question to the party or parties resposible for creating the media in question and not the the store that sells them. While Apple may distribute the files, it does not own the copyrights for them nor have a creative say in their production. While I believe Apple is working on a hardware/software means of delivering CC when/if the studios choose to emplement such for on-line delivery. In fact, I doubt studios would actually object to such if the means were already in place to do so. Unfortunately, at this time "Open Captioning" (AKA Subtitling) is about the only means available at this time and means that all viewers would be required to watch subtitles (unless the studios should offer CC/non-CC versions). Same answer could apply to your format problem -- merely point out to the major movie studios that they should sell their products in multiple formats with and without captioning.

  • How to export webcat captions selectively?

    Hi,
Our client have a requirement where in we need export the dashboard and report related captions selectively.
Like when I try to export my shared folder from catalog manager, it is also exporting <catalogname>\shared\<foldername>\_portal\<dashboardname>\_selections\1ima3t7ti0fvoe4j\_defaults\*.atr
Our client doesn't want these to be exported.
Is there any way to do this??
    Thanks!!
    Vasantha.P

Closed captions are by definition not on all the time; what you want are open captions: for more info, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Closed_captioning.
Premiere Pro CC added support importing, editing, and exporting closed captions. Burning captions into the video is not currently supported, but it's on the product backlog.

  • DVD Closed Captioning

    Hello, quick question...
Is it possible to have a button from the menu of a DVD lead to a set of Closed Captioning (or Open Captions!) that keep them "Force Displayed"?
I believe that the captioning is a function of a decoder in the television, but i'm not 100% sure.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks.

You are correct. Captioning is strictly controlled by the decoder in the tv.

  • Capturing closed captions

I have a client who has a series of Betacam SP tapes with closed captioning that he wants put onto DVD. I have a Betacam SP deck connected to my MacPro with a Canopus box (not ideal, I know). Is there a way to capture the video with the closed captions signal intact into FCP. And if so, what should I do after that to burn the DVD with closed captions (using DVDSP). Thanks in advance.

pg. 611 of the user manual
Adding Closed Captions to a DVD
With DVD Studio Pro, you can import closed caption files as part of a track. This is the
most reliable way to include closed captions with your title.
Do not assume that just because the closed-captioning information was present in the
video during the MPEG encode that it will be available when the disc is played by the
viewer. Be sure to perform a test before relying on this method of adding closed
    captions to your title.
Some MPEG encoders can create separate closed caption files that DVD Studio Pro can
use to add the function to your disc.
DVD Studio Pro supports closed caption files in the “.cc” and “.scc” formats.
