Open CHM file

hi2all
I want to open .chm file when i click on help menu. I had already tried
Runtime.getRuntime().load("C:/html/help.chm");
but this throw an exception that "C:/html/help.chm" is not a win32 application.

If you are using java 1.6, use can simply use it's new desktop integration to open any file with an associated application... If you are using older java, download and use jdic library...
it's
desktop.open(file);
where desktop is a java.awt.Desktop (or org.jdesktop.jdic.desktop.Desktop) object... that simple... :)

This could be a Launch Services issue. The following article describes how to manually reset Launch Services — the notes at the bottom of the article also provide information about the side effects of deleting each of the files involved:
    Resetting Launch Services
If you prefer using a cache cleaning utility instead of following the manual procedure described in the previous article, take a look at this other article for general troubleshooting and cache-cleaning procedures. Actually, you should also verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described there:
Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption
The most appropriate utility for this particular problem probably is Tiger Cache Cleaner, but you may also want to consider other utilities, such as OnyX, or Cache Out X, which are free. Whatever utility you choose, be sure to read this first:
Side effects of System cache cleaning
As an example, this is how you should proceed with OnyX:
    1. Quit all applications.
    2. Launch OnyX and enter your administrator password.
    3. Go to Maintenance > Reset and check LaunchServices database.
    4. Un-check any other pre-checked options.
    5. Click the Execute button.
    6. Restart the computer.
BTW, if you’re running Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), as your profile indicates, it would have been more appropriate to discuss this in the Mail & Address Book - Tiger forum. If the discussion applies to both Mail 1.x and Mail 2.x, it doesn’t really matter, but it’s difficult to know that in advance.

  • 896358: Cannot open CHM files

I hope this isn't indicative of MS's patch quality continuing to take a nosedive.
I need for certain users to be able to open CHM files from a network share.  Easy cheesy.  Sadly the 'workarounds' seem to function (or not) wildly differently across OS versions and architecture.
I have Win7 64 and 32 bit machines.  64 bit work fine when the 'allowed' URLs are specified in the registry (HKLM\Software\Microsoft\HTMLhelp\1.x\ItssRestrictions - value UrlAllowList).  No zone modification needed.
    However;
32 bit Win 7 machines do not work with this method.  Unless the user is a local administrator (not happening).  I cannot get them to work at all.  Can anyone please help me understand what needs to be done differently for these clients?
    Thanks!

    Hi n4,
Have you tried to add a MaxAllowedZone value under the registry key?
    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\HTMLhelp\1.x\ItssRestrictions
If not, you may take a try:
    1. Right-click the ItssRestrictions subkey, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
    2. Type MaxAllowedZone, and then press Enter.
    3. Right-click the MaxAllowedZone value, and then click Modify.
    4. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
    5. Quit Registry Editor.
If the above steps do not work for you, please see
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896358 for alternatives.

  • How can I open .chm files in Firefox?

I'm trying to open a .chm file in Firefox. I've read that this is possible -- ultimately, I want to save the content out as something more accessible. But whether I right-click the .chm file in Windows Explorer, and use "Open with ... Firefox", or use the File/open menu command from within Firefox itself, it merely brings up a dialog box in Firefox asking me where to save the file, with the same filename and filetype extension. I save the file, and the pattern repeats. It never opens.
I can open the file in the Microsoft Help File utility, so I know it's a valid file, but that utility doesn't let me save or export it in any other format.
I've gone into Options/Applications in Firefox to set how this filetype is handled, but can't find any reference to Compiled Windows Help Files on the list in any form, and I don't know how to add it as an option.
How can I resolve this, please?
For reference, I'm running Firefox 35.0.1 on Windows 7 x64. Thanks for any help.

No, I know full well what .chm files are, and how to search for info about them. I'd rather have an answer to the specific question I asked, which I asked for specific reasons.
You seem to have ignored my question, and leapt to massive assumptions about what I "really" need, and it's puzzling that you persist with them even after I've told you your assumptions are wrong. Your answers come across as somewhat patronising, maybe intentionally so - is that what you intended? Why would you do that?

  • Error opening CHM file (Cannot open the file: mk:@MSITStore)

    Hi,
I'm getting an error opening a CHM file (Cannot open the file: mk:@MSITStore). I have tried the following solutions, but neither of them worked:
Deleted the CPD file, reopened the project, and recompiled.
Ran MJ's Diagnostics report and recompiled.
    I'm using RH10 and Windows 7.
I have lots of other projects, and none of them result in this error. I can't think of anything else to fix it. I have seen a few threads on this issue, but none of them have lead me to any solutions that work for me. I'm hoping that starting a new thread will provide visibility and allow someone to share a solution.
    Thanks,
    Amy

    ---UPDATE---
I was able to fix this by generating the WebHelp and then regenerating the CHM file. I'm not sure why this worked, but it did.
However, I'm also seeing this issue with a different project now, and this "fix" isn't fixing that one. So I still need an actual solution. At least for now, the first project is "fixed."
    Thanks!

  • Mk:@MSITStore error while opening CHM file

    Hi,
I have placed a CHM file (generated using RoboHelp
X5) in the network folder. When opened from there, it is
    throwing this error:
Cannot open the file : mk:@MSITStore: <path where file
    is located with file name>.
This error is thrown only for one or two files and not
all the CHM files in that network folder. Why so?
What is the reason and how to resolve this? Please
    help!
    Thanks and regards,
    Krishna

    P Krishna:
The CHM will not open from a network drive. This is a
security issue. There ia a work around it but it involves editing
the registry of all your users (which could be a formidable task).
    Girl from Ipanema:
If it will not open locally it could be due to the manner in
which the CHM file got to the local drive. The latest Windows XP
(and I assume Vista, too) will block any CHM that was simply copied
to your hard drive. To resolve this, right click on the CHM in
Windows Explorer, select Properties, and "Unblock."
    Hope this helps,

  • Cannot open chm file

    Hi,
I've found several threads on this site conserning error
messages containing: mk:@MSITStore , but none of them seems to fit
    my situation.
I worked in RH on a project, generated a new chm file a
couple of times a day. No problem. Then suddently after generating
another time I could not open the chm - not from within RH project,
not from the folder, not when copying the (newly generated) chm to
    the desktop.
The message is: "Cannot open the file:
    mk:@MSITStore:C:\Program Files\RoboHelp Office...\..\filename.chm"
I've shortened it here with a couple of folders, but no it is
not very deep. I'ts at the same level as my other projects, so
    that's not the problem.
I can open older chm files generated from other projects as
before, so there is nothing wrong with the help function itself.
I've tried deleting the chm file, rebooting my pc, regenerating -
    but no result.
I also tried the MJ's Diagnostics and the only problem found
    was:
HTML Help 1.x Workshop Components*** HH Workshop not found or
    not installed correctly. Try reinstalling.
But it seems like this 1.x is something very old and my
installation has worked up until now. Do I really need to reinstall
something and exacly what and how? Is this an RH component or MS
    component?
    Any clues are welcome.
    Thanks
    Sara

    Hi John,
Thanks for trying to help out. It's solved now. I should have
written the solution here right away, but I was so happy that I
could continue with my work so I forgot about it.)
What I did was that I looked at the single source layout and
I thought that Optimize CHM File Size might cause a problem (a shot
in the dark - but you have to try everthing). I deselected it and
regenerated. Voila - it worked. Then, with trembeling hands, I
selected it again and regenerated - it still worked. Maybe this
change of the layout made it save again properly and restart from
scratch. But i thought that I had tried a similar thing before when
a made new layouts to see if they would work, and they didn't.
So, it's solved, but I'm not really sure what was wrong and
    what solved it.

  • Error when opening .chm file

I converted a .Winhelp help project to HTML and generated
.chm file. The .chm file opens just fine on my local hard drive.
Then I check in this .chm file into Visual Source Safe where we
store all of our files. When I get a copy or check out this same
.chm file from Visual Source Safe on to my local hard drive, it
refuses to open and displays the error message:
    Cannot open the file:
    mk:@MSITStore:C:\SOURCESAFE\Enterprise\ENT5.0\Documentation\Help\CHM\ptwin.chm
The same behavior occurs even when other people get a copy of
this file on to their hard drive. How can I resolve this problem?
    Thank you in advance!

    Hi Mandavilli,
    This
thread suggests that the chm file has become corrupted somehow,
and that deleting the CPD file and recompiling solved the issue,
although there is no mention of VSS. It might be worth trying, in
    any case.

  • Cannot open .CHM file when Application is running in Service Mode.

    Hello All,
I have a compiled HTML help file (.CHM) that i am trying to
integrate with my VB 6.0 project.
I am using RH_ShowHelp function (which uses htmlhelp()) to
    launch the Help File.
All is fine when i run my program in Application Mode.
But, when i install my app in Service Mode, (running under
SYSTEM account) - it does not work.
I have tried to use ShellExecute API as well, and that does
    not work either.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get this working
    from services mode?
Is there some other function call or parameters needed...
    Any input is appreciated.
    Thanks
    G

Software executed as a service is usually running as a
    background task and
is usually executed not by the current logged-in user but by
    a special
default "user" named "System". There are a number of
    advantages to having
software run as a service... it can run continuously no
    matter who's logged
into the system or even if the system is locked.

  • Link in program won't open .htm page in .chm file

Previously we were able to link to an individual topic in a RoboHelp .chm (this old copy may have been generated in RHx5 or earlier) by clicking a link in the program interface.
This is how the link was written in MS Help Server Program HH -
         m_strHelpPath[0] = "mk:@MSITStore:%sSystem\\FabriTALK.chm::/Connecting_a_Control.htm";
The .chm file compliled in RH8 will not open the topic level doc. It opens the .chm file, but for some reason won't dig down to the .htm to open it the way it used to.
Is this a question of compile settings?
    Any suggestions?

  • Problem with opening a chm file in java.

    Hi all,
I m having an application in which i need to open a chm file from some gui interface. I m using the following code for that...
    Process theProcess =Runtime.getRuntime().exec("hh.exe RWXml.chm");
it is working fine on my machine. But when i deploy the code on other machine, It shows some windows error. And when i give the same command on commandline it is working fine. Can anybody tell me that what's wrong with this code.
    Thanks

Nothing to do with ID. It really means what it says - your file permissions are hosed and it being an ID file this could include things like fonts or placed images referenced within it.

Please help me in solving the same

    HI,
    Thanks for the response.
I am really tensed for the same...
Actually the error occurs in the following case:
    1. I am creating a Parent folder in robohelp with the name ABC..
    2. Next Under ABC i have created 2 separate folders say XYZ and EFG.
    3. Under XYZ i have created various Topics say 2 or 3.
    4. Under EFG i have created various Topics say 7 or 8.
    5. Now, i have created a TOC with name for ABC (Parent Folder.)
    6. Next i have dragged and dropped my two sub folders that i have created under ABC in Project Set up wizard that is XYZ and EFG, in order to generate the webhelp first and then the CHM file fo rthe same.
    7. Webhelp is successfully getting generated.
    8. But when i convert the Webhelp to CHM Converter, after few seconds the robohelp gets halt and it shuts up the robohelp, showing a message dialog box that the Adobe Robohelp 11 is Troubleshooting for the error, the Windows manager will get back to you..Someting like this, the .CHM file for the same gets generated on the described path, but when i click on it, it does not open and shows the error as "Cannot open file: mk:@MSITStore: C:\\Users\..\Desktop\filename.chm".
Please  help me in sorting the above issue.
    According to me:
I think i am Lacking in the two things:
    1. How to link all the topics with the parent folder.
    2. How to Merge the projects.
Can you please provide me the link where i can get tutorial to create a TOC for multiple files in a same TOC and to generate a chm for them.
Actually for single project folder i have worked successfully. But, its first time i have to create a chm with lot many sub folders in it, as like one create a book.
    Please help
