  • Opening my appleworks file in word 2007

I have a PC at work and used to have a mac at home (I will be getting a new mac in a few months). I have an appleworks file that I saved a while ago that I am trying to open on Word 2007 at work, but there isn't the converter like word 2003 had. Any ideas how I can open this file? Thanks in advance
    Jolene

    Welcome to Apple Discussions Jolene
I never have had good luck opening AppleWorks documents in Word 2003 on my work PC. Where Word 2004 on my Mac opens them almost flawlessly, they will open on the PC, but full of "garbage text." A one-line AppleWorks word processing document became 26 pages in Word. Of course, Word won't even know it can open the AppleWorks file if it doesn't have the .cwk extension. And it can only open word processing files.
I think you'll have much better luck if you save your AppleWorks documents as Word before sending them. Be sure to add the .doc extension because AppleWorks won't do it for you.

  • How do i open an Appleworks file now that I am running Mavericks and Pages?

How do I open an Appleworks file now that I am running Mavericks and Pages?

Word Processing documents can be opened directly in Pages 4 (AppleWorks 6 only) but this is no longer available - the newPages 5 (Mavericks required) does not open AppleWorks documents. Panergy Software's docXConverter v3.2 ($19.95) can convert Appleworks 5 and 6 Word Processing documents to RTF (though it has been reported that it can only handle documents which contain only text, not those which include images or frames). The latest version of the free LibreOffice has announced that it can open AppleWorks 6 Word Processing documents and an ability to open ClarisWorks documents has been reported: it does appear to be able to handle at least some embedded images.
Draw Documents can be opened directly only in EazyDraw (the more expensive version from their website, not the cheaper one from the Mac App Store, and you will need v4.0 'Retro' not the most recent version) or Intaglio (though this appears not to be able to handle very complex drawings). LibreOffice will open simple Draw documents but I found it very unreliable with complex ones.
Spreadsheets can be opened directly only in the older versions of  Numbers - the new version for Mavericks will not do this. The old version is no longer available.
Presentations can be opened directly only in the older versions Keynote; again, the new version for Mavericks will not do this. The old version is no longer available.
To use other programs, or open Database documents at all, you must export from AppleWorks first, which means you need a way to run it.
If you have upgraded to Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks and have AppleWorks documents you cannot open, then you should be able to install Snow Leopard on an external hard disk and start from that (provided that the Mac did not come with anything higher than Snow Leopard originally installed); and success has been reported in running Snow Leopard Server under emulation in Parallels - the method is described here: Snow Leopard Server is available in the Apple Store (by telephone) at a reduced price (at the time of writing) and is preferable to using ordinary Snow Leopard which is quite tricky. I haven't tried this myself: use at your own discretion. You can then run AppleWorks as an emergency measure.

  • Need help opening old Appleworks file

Hi all I have been searching the forums and seem to come up with well lets say I'm screwed,,,I am trying to help out my uncle who had a mac back in the day and had made some what appears to be some appleworks documents that I cant open, the documents are on floppies which I was able to pull some pictures off and convert them to .jpeg's but I cant open the other files,,,I have tried OpenOffice and Office for Macs but no luck,,,can anyone help with this or tell me how to do this,,I'm not real good with Macs seeing i've been only using one for 6mths ,,,,

You could use AppleWorks 6 in OS X or AppleWorks 5 in Classic to open the files. You could try eBay and do a search for "AppleWorks" or "Apple Works" (some people put a "space" in the name). Hardcore Mac sells AppleWorks 6.2.4.
If there are just a few files (less than 10), you can e-mail them to me & I will convert them (to text, Word, Excel, PDF) & send them back.

  • Pages won't open word documents created in Office for Mac

I'm using system 10.10 with the latest version of Pages. Although I've read that if you right click on a word document you should get the option to open it with Pages, and it should be translated. But I get a message that the document can not be opened. I created it with Microsoft Office for Mac 2004 using Word.
I've been able to email those documents to people who use PC's and they have always been able to open my documents, so why not Pages?

I tried that, but no luck. I also tried copying my Office for Mac 2004 onto my new iMac 12,2 but that didn't work. because those programs won't run in the Yosemite operating system. I see that there is supposed to be a new Office for Mac 2015 version, but nobody seems to know if or when that will be released. I may purchase Officer for Mac 2011, but before that purchase I thought I'd ask Microsoft if the 2011 version would open up Work files created by the 2004 edition. Their support line put me in touch with someone in India who tried to be helpful, but I'm not convinced he really knows the answer. He tried to persuade me to get Open Office, but that's not what I want. I'd like to be able to compose documents on the Mac platform and send them as attachments to emails for people who I know are using PCs. I don't like that extra step you have to do through in Pages to export as a PC document. The same for Excel and Power Point.

  • Can't open old AppleWorks files on new MacBook Pro w/Snow Leopard

Just bought a refurbished MacBook Pro, did the migration from my old (2 yrs) MacBook via FireWire. Many of the old application icons are not appearing in my Dock, just Question marks ???. When I click on a ?, it indicates the name of that app which was there on the old MacBook, but there's no icon & I can't open the app from there. I can't find my Adobe Reader app, & several others, on the hard drive. Maybe I can find a work around for those....
BUT - zillions of files in the old AppleWorks/ClarisWorks files open in sometimes unreadable text, with all formatting gone. I NEED these files!! Please help!!

Thanks for your reply. When I try opening an AppleWorks documents with Pages as you suggested I get the message that the AppleWorks document is damaged.
Ahh...then it may actually be damaged. All of my old AppleWorks docs (word-processing docs) are opening just fine with Pages. On the other hand, if the AW doc is a drawing or database doc then Pages might not be able to open it. If the AW doc is a spreadsheet, it might open with Numbers.
Would you suggest that I use Migration Assistant to transfer my older files from my iMac to my MacBook (rather than using the thumb drive?) Will it ask me about overwriting files? My concern is that it may erase some changes to newer versions of documents that were on the thumb drive.
I do have the installation disk for my MacBook and all disks for the iMac.
No, If you still have your AppleWorks installation disk, I would suggest installing it and trying to open the 'damaged' docs that way. Later, if an item won't open in Pages but will open in AW, then resave it in AW as a generic format that Pages will open. In this way you can move these docs from the now unsupported AW and into Pages format. If we wait too long, we may not be able to install AW at some point in the future and then your old docs will be orphaned.

  • How do I open older appleworks files on my new iMac?

I cannot open cwk documents created on an emac running 10.3. I now have an iMac, power PC G5 running 10.4.11. I have installed Appleworks 6.2.9 and can create and open documents that have been created with it. I cannot open any documents created on the old computer. I keep getting an i/o error occurred message when I double click on the icon. I have tried opening a new document and inserting the old, but nothing happens. I have downloaded the appleworks file repair utility and dragged the files into that, but still nothing. Help!

    You hit widely described features.
AppleWoks 629 is unable to open a lot of old files.
If you had take care of the description of the tool, you wouldn't have lost time with "Appleworks file repair utility" which is perfectly described as a tool designed to repair files corrupted by a specific network configuration. Nothing common which a single user system.
To solve your problem, two tracks available:
    (a) run AppleWorks under Classic. Doing that it's in fact AppleWorks 628 which will run and it is able to open oldies.
    (b) get an older version of the program, 624 or 627 which are able to do the job.
Open the files then save them in the "new" format. When it will be done you will be able to use them with 629.

  • Buying a new MAcBook Pro - How do i move files and office for Mac

I am buying a new MacBook Pro and have a license for my office for Mac 2008. Can I re-install into the new computer or do i need to buy a new license? Also, how do i move all my itunes, photos, and files from one to the other!

Use TDM for transferring files, drag libraries into folders (iTunes Library into iTunes Folder for example). The Firewire cable will need to be a 6 to 9 pin, or an adapter.
If you're giving up the pB, De-authorize it for iTunes.
Don't do applications between G4 and Intel machines, better to reinstall.
Uninstall Office and use your key on the new Machine. Run Office update.
Connecting Your PowerBook to Another Computer Using FireWire Target Disk Mode.
If you want to transfer files between your PowerBook and another FireWire-equipped
Macintosh computer, or you have a problem that prevents your computer from starting
up, you can use FireWire Target Disk Mode to connect to another computer. When you
start up your computer in FireWire Target Disk Mode, the other computer can access
your PowerBook as if it were an external hard disk.
Note: When using FireWire Target Disk Mode, it’s a good idea to connect your power
    adapter to the PowerBook.
To connect your PowerBook to another computer in FireWire Target Disk Mode:
1 Make sure that your PowerBook is shut down.
2 Use a FireWire cable to connect your PowerBook to another FireWire-equipped
    computer.
3 Start up your PowerBook and immediately hold down the T key.
Your PowerBook display shows the FireWire logo. The other computer’s display shows
the PowerBook internal hard disk icon. You can now drag and drop files between the
    computers.
4 When you finish transferring files, drag the PowerBook hard disk icon to the Trash.
5 Press the power button (®) on the PowerBook to shut it down, and then disconnect
    the FireWire cable.

  • Opening saved appleworks files in pages

My 4 year old MacBook crashed, got new hard drive (free) at Apple store.
I also bought a MacBook Air and installed IWork.
Installed same IWork on the old MacBook (OSX 10.5.8) as well, since I can't find the original Appleworks disc.
However, can't open the saved (Iomega hard drive) Appleworks files on old MacBook now.
    What do I do.
And how will that work on the Air, the same?

You should be able to open AppleWorks Word Processing documents in Pages: use File menu>Open. Pages won't open any other type of AW document.
EazyDraw will open AW Draw documents, though it's not cheap.
Numbers will open AW spreadsheets including calculations and headers and footers. It has slightly fewer calculation functions, so if you are using any of the more obscure functions they may not work.
No other program can open AW Paint or Database documents. To handle this you need a functioning copy of AW to convert them to PICTs and ASCII text respectively.

  • Open URL or File not working for standalone exe

I've tried lots of different things here...
I have one movie, published as standalone exe (windows). In
Preferences, I have "Open URL or File, and enter the next movie
    name - movie_2.exe.
I have tried using a front or backslash in front of the file

I've confirmed the files do both exist in the same directory.
    Symptom:
They publish fine, and I can click on the exe to run it, but
when it ends, it seems to be looking for a site...I get a browser
window that opens, and a please wait, while it looks for
    http://movie_2.exe/, then a "Page

    Any hints?
    Thank you!

I don't much use EXE output because of its limitations, but

  • Why won't Pages open old AppleWorks files?

I have some very old word processing files which I wrote in AppleWorks. I'm having trouble opening these files.
When I attempt to open them in Pages, I get the following message:

    1.  Read Roger Wilmut's excellent series of articles - Abandoning Appleworks:

    2.  Consider running Appleworks 6 in Snow Leopard Server installed in Parallels 8 in Lion or Mt. Lion:

  • How to open password protected files in Numbers for iPad?

In my company, there are formats created in Excel 2010 which have password-protetected cells. Neither Numbers, nor Doccuemts to Go can't open them.
The workaround is having someone open the file in my office and re-save it in an older version, but it messes up with the formatting and it's simply not a practical solution.
Documents to Go still doesn't support Office 2010 password protected files. Numbers niether, so does anyone know of any app that can solve my problem?

Go to the App Store on your iPad and download Adobe Acrobat DC (formerly called Reader).
Open it and click on Help. Then click on Handbook. Read the section on "Open PDFs in Acrobat DC"

  • Opening a client file - Mail attachments for example

Building a swing client mail application has one huge hickup and can't think of a good solution. How do you automatically open an email attachment?? If its a .doc document, it should open a word document automatically instead of reinventing the wheel and code some Java RTF viewer.
A lot of attachments are compressed, you mean you have to code it all in Java? That would be absurd? With 100 now common mime types, anyone have any good suggestions of doing this.
For example - Would the windows "start" command be a good idea to simply open the folder if not a text/html or image (gif/jpg) file?
What about linux and unix and mac?? Whats the OS command to open the mail cache attachments folder? Not happy that Java doesn't support a native method to open a file. Why is that?
Hope people reply to this and bring some ideas that are effective and would not be too troublesome to implement or re-invent the wheel??
    Thanks
    Abraham Khalil

If you peruse cross-platform browsers and mail clients (like Mozilla), you'll see that most provide in their editable configurations a mapping of mime-types to applications. Using this, a user can specify what command to give to the hosting platform to execute when a mime-type is opened.
Some platforms, like windows, provide a mime-type mapping service. You can add platform specific code to take advantage of this. Mozilla allows you to, for a mime-type, specify the default application from the platform or your own.
Compressed files also have their own mime-type, so the associated application would take care of that.
I hope you find this of some help.

  • How do I open recovered Appleworks files?

I have used Stellar Phoenix to try and recover/open deleted files. It seems to recover data but when I try to open by clicking in the finder I get an I/O error message. When I try to open withing the app, it does nothing. S.P. techies are stumped. Any ideas?

    Hello
    I never used Stellar Phoenix.
Recovery programs scan the HD in search of file headers. When they find one, they use this header to rebuild a file.
Alas, many of these headers are pointing to reused blocks so the resulting file is unusable.
    This is not surprising.
In the lot of "resurrected" files some are odd, some are correct.
You will have to scan them one by one.
If you send me one of these odd one, I will be able to write and test a script batch checking the "resurected files". It will move the odd ones in a folder named "odd".
