Open CS5 Document in CS3

Help. There appears, from my limited knowledge, that there is no way to get a CS5 document into CS3 (without CS4).
This is very bad. I have CS5 documents from customers and I can no longer open the files. CS3 does not know about .idml files and CS5 doesn't know about .inx files.
Please tell me Adobe is fixing this! This is a huge mistake on Adobe's part just assuming that everybody upgrades to every new version. We do not have CS4 and don't have access to it.
Please tell me Adobe is going to allow CS5 to create .inx files that can be read by CS3.
Does anyone know anything about making this happen?
Or, another way to get a CS5 document into CS3?
Thanks,
David Whitmyre

Thaks for the perspective, Bob.
I don't think Adobe is evil, as some certainly do.
I think their prices are high, but hey, they make great products (my opinion). Your point about the cost per day does put things in perspective when looked at that way, but I know many who have held off, being that business has not been so good. For myself, I have upgraded every product I have used at just about every version (skipped a few). I started this "back in the day" using Pagemaker 1 on Windows ver. 2 (yea, some people have no idea that even existed!), Corel Draw ver 1, Photoshop Ver 2, Illustrator, Ventura Publisher (Xerox) ver 1, FrameMaker (when it still belonged to Frame). Fractal Design Painter, Flash, Dreamweaver, blah, blah, blah. Pretty much, you name, I've used it and upgraded it until it died. I've spent thousands upon thousands of dollars on software. However, as you make your point, the payback, if your are in business to make money, is far greater. I have made 100-fold back from what I have put into the purchase and upgrade of the software I use.
I also know it it is no easy task to fix or even add new things into software. I have worked for several software companies over the years. Believe me, I know. I do also know that just about every product I have used has had the ability to downgrade a file back several versions at least. Adobe has to know that there are lots of people out there using CS3 for real-world work. And, unless they live on an island, it is likely they will be working with people who have CS5. Just sayin', seems a little too close to cut it off, even if it is because of features. Make some sort of downgrade ability.
Just my perspective.
Thanks,
David

  • I can't open CS5 documents in CS4

I can't open CS5 documents in CS4. I know I need to update my plugins, but when I go to updates it says there are none. I have a hardcopy of CS4, is there a way to download CS4 electronically so I can receive all the updates I need? I have no idea how to do this manually . . . or maybe I just need to upgrade to CS5?

Or else you need to update CS4 to the 6.0.6 patch...

  • How to open CS5 project in CS3

    Hi All,
How can I open CS5 project in CS3?
    Thanks
    Shaul

    In theory you can't.
    Premiere is not downwards compatible.
Some have opened CS4 in CS3 or CS5 in CS4 with non or basis effects.
But you can always give it a try, make sure you have a backup

  • Opening CS2 document in CS3 Server not working,

    Hi
I'm trying to open an InDesign CS2 document in CS3 Server, but when I do that, the Application.open() doesn't return.
InDesignServer.exe starts working for a while, creates a lock file, but then it starts to idle and the call won't return.
After this, I cant do anything against the server anymore, until i restart it.
Is this a known issue? is there a solution for this?
    I'm using the Java/CORBA interface.
    Thanks

I got it working after uninstalling and installing again, and updating, but now i have another problem.

  • I am having problems opening any document in CS3.

I keep getting an error mesage that reads... the specified module could not be found C:\Program Files\Common Files\AdobeVAdobe Version Cue CS3\3.3.0\Version CuwUI.DLL.  The program then closes. How do I fix this problem. I have Windows Vista Home Premium.

On the Mac open System Preferences > iCloud.  Deselect the box next to:  Documents & Data then reselect it.
On the iPad tap Settings > iCloud
Switch Documents & Data off then back on.
Give iCloud a minute to re sync the data then try opening that document on either your Mac or iPad,

  • How can I force Indesign cs5 to open cs5 documents when both cs5 and cs6 is installed?

We are using Indesign with cs5-specific plugins. Due to that we have both cs5 and cs 6 installed on our workstations. Trying to assign cs5 documents (INDD) to cs5, windows refuses to let us choose indesign.exe (cs5). How can we force cs5 to be the chosen application for .indd?

The best way is using Soxy:

  • Open CS5 Documents in Earlier Versions (CS2, CS3, CS4)

I am currently working on some documents in CS5.
Others need to access these files but they are not on CS5.
Is there a way to save down the files from CS5 so they can use them in the earlier versions?
Or is there another way besides saving down that I can give them the files for their use?
    Thanks for the help!

Yes there is. How many older versions do you have installed on your computer? (You need all of those you mentioned expect for the very oldest one.)
Just like most software that produces extremely complicated files, InDesign cannot 'save as' any old version. There simply is no way to 'convert' most new features into stuff that works with an older version of the program -- think of spanned columns, cross references, grep styles, footnotes, tables.
You can export your document to a format that can be opened with ONE (1 -- that's one, not two or three) previous version. All features that were new in your current version will silently disappear, and will not show up or be visibile or leave any remark or note in the document when opened in the older version.
Apart from that, there have been updates of other parts of the program, even though to the casual user they appear to work the same. One I know of is the Paragraph Composer -- this has been changed from CS3 to CS4, meaning that if you open and edit text from a CS3 document into CS4, it will be reformatted. In the other direction, the same will happen.
Given all this, are you absolutely sure you want to even try this? There is absolutely no guarantee exporting down to one older version will create a usable document. Saving down two, three or more versions is hopelessly optimistic for anything more complicated than a plain-text newsletter.

  • Open CS5 documents in InDesign CC

When opening InDesign CS5 files in InDesign CC it is opening up as "converted" and forcing us to "Save As". Is there an easy way to forcibly overwrite the document instead of save as?
We're having the same problem with InDesign server scripts failing because if ID server CC opens a CS5 file it will not forcibly save as CC and will throw an error.
This is a problem for us because we need do not want our users manually going in and trying to find the right path to save their documents as they're all stored on a network share.

Simply try saving with the same name. It will effectively over-write your file as you want. The "[converted]" I find this to be a courtesy to let you know at a glance that you're working on an older version document. As far as the path issue, I can't answer that, as I use a third party program which, with a single keystroke, takes me to the original folder the files resides in. It's called Default Folder, and I've found it indispensable since 1999. Try it, you'll love it. It's from St. Claire Software.
    Cheers!

  • Help Opening CS5 Indd in CS3?

    Hey,
so I work using both cs5 and cs3 but unfortunately when I tried opening one of the files i had created, it would not open in cs3... Is there anything I can really do to get this to work. Updating to CS5 on the other computer is not an option unfortunately.
    Thanks guy!
    Tyler

You need InDesign CS4 to open IDML files exported from InDesign CS5. InDesign CS4 can then export an INX file which InDesign CS3 can open. Do not expect a perfect translation. If you are haring files between these two computers then you are using a terrible workflow that will certainly cause nightmares for some people.
If you don’t have access to InDesign CS4, then just export your IDML file and contact someone here via PM (like me) and we can take care of it via email. Of you can post the IDML file online somewhere and paste a link into a new reply.

  • Problem with opening cs4 document in cs5.5

I have quite a big document of a catalog, created in InDesign cs4. It contains many layers and different master pages. When I open this document in cs5.5 layers and master pages get completely confused and the document looks completely different. When I created the inx-file in cs4 and opened it in cs3 everything was alright. Does anybody know what the problem in cs5.5 could the problem? Am I doing sth wrong?

I've been looking at the file, and it is indeed a puzzlement.
There is some good news, however. I don't know why it is happening (perhaps a bug, and maybe John would like to take a look at this, too), but it looks like the Paper-filled rectangle from Hinweise layer on the right of Master Ee is being copied to the left half of the actual document spreads on random layers. The pages that seem to be blank are easy to spot in the Page panel (22, 24, 26 & 32) and you can simply Cmd-Shift click on the rectangles on those pages to override and your text and graphics will be revealed. I'm not immediately picking up any other problems scanning quickly through the pages. For a quick and dirty get it done solution, I think this will work, though I would use the .inx file rather than the .indd for the conversion in CS5.5.
I've looked through the file history, and it is long. This started out in 2007 in CS2 and has gone through updates in CS3 and CS4, and been recovered from crashes at least 4 times (which might have something to do with the strangeness). I also think there are a lot of extraneous unused frames on many of the pages. If it were my project, I'd probably clean it up as much as possible in CS4, even going as far as recreating the master pages in a new document and then going page by page and doing a copy/paste in place of all non-master objects into the new file if you don't want to spend the time to place everythign again from scratch, which in my opinion would be a better idea (I tried moving the pages to a new file, but that didn't make any difference in the CS5.5 conversion). You could also rebuild from Scratch in CS5.5.

  • Opening .psd Files from cs3 In CS5?

I'm new to photoshop CS5 and I'm getting this error on some PSD files "Could not complete your request because it is not a valid photoshop document" and I think its because these .psd files were made/saved in CS3. So is there any way I can open CS3 .psd files in CS5?
If CS3 .psd files should open fine in CS5, then does anyone know what could be my problem? thanks!

There should not be an issue with PSD's from CS3, in CS5. There were some compatibility issues way back, but Adobe offered the ability to include that backward compatibility.
My first thought would be that there is a problem with those particular PSD files. Do they Open in PS CS3? Do they Open fine in programs, like IrfanView?
Now, if there IS an issue with CS5, someone will correct my assertions.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • CS5 InDesign cannot open files in the InDesign CS5 document format

I'll be working in InDesign CS5 with no problems then at some point I'll double click on an InDesign file and a window comes up and says - InDesign cannot open files in the InDesign CS5 document format. Sometimes when this happens I have to completely reboot my whole system before I can get InDesign to function correctly. Is this a flaw with CS5? Did not happen with previous versions. It doesn't always happen but I can't figure out what causes it. Would appreciate anyones help. I'm getting to really HATE InDesign!!

I have not uninstalled and reinstalled, but I did just switch over to another workstation using Time Machine. The previous system was Leopard. This one is running Snow Leopard.
I'm not sure how to parse this. When you say "switch over to another workstaiton using Time Machine" do you mean, "started using another machine that happens to be using Time Machine for backups and is also running 10.6 instead of 10.5"?
Or do you mean, "Used the Time Machine program to upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6?" If you mean the second one, well, I can't say I am surprised that things are messed up. And that would make your problem rather different than the other posters, which is good reason for you to have started your own thread (and thus your own solution)....
I'm a little bit leary of getting in and changing things in Terminal, without understanding what I am changing. Plus this is a workstation at work, so if I screw something up, that is not a good things, and I don't have time to spend a day fixing things back up again, with the way our workload is.
Well, you can find a lot of marginal documentation about lsregister and Launch Services, but I wonder whether your understood the ramifications of messing with Time Machine (or maybe I have misinterpretted you!). I'd be surprised if you found another way to fix this, other than uninstall/reinstall.
    Good luck.

  • InDesign cs3 crashes when opening CS2 documents

ID cs3 crashes when opening CS2 documents, not when open dialog appears, but after I choose file and it "starts" opening it. (core duo, xp, clean install, all updates)
If i open ID by opening file, it crashes with standard windows dialog, if I open ID first, it does not crash, but rather behaves strangely, nothing is opening, if I move a mouse it turns to sand clock.
Same thing happens on all machines with ID cs3 in my office.
All other apps works fine. I did read every single forum about ID crashing and nothing helps. Files resaved in interchange format opens well. There must be something in the files that ID cs2 did and what id cs3 cannot open :( Any ideas?

    1. Is there any reason to use eps? Avoid it use AI, PSD or PDF instead.
    2. Are all used fonts ok? What kind of fonts du you use?
    3. Which Mac OS X do you use?
Does it crash with alwayst the same files?
What does the file history tell you? Hold down the command key and got to InDesign > About InDesign… Does it tell you somewhat more specific, like missing plugins, severly damaged files and restored files, when (in which version) the files have been created first (helps often to export to IDML and open this again and save it as INDD and work with the new file.), has the problematic file been converted from another application (Quark Xpress or PageMaker), etc.

  • CS5 document won't open

I have a 55-page CS5 document that will not open. I sent it to our local IT help desk, with no luck. Of course, this goes to press tomorrow.
    I'm on a Mac.
    Any options out there?

Ask in the whatever product forum and be much more specific - exact system info, document details and so on.

  • Illustrator & Photoshop CS3 Freeze When I Try to Open a Document

I have CS3 installed, and just since yesterday, when I open photoshop or illustrator and then try to open a document (just from file-open), the entire program freezes and won't let me click anywhere. I have to ctrl-alt-del to get the program closed. I have restarted my computer numerous times. If I don't have photoshop or illustrator open and go to my computer and find the file I want to open and double-click on it, it will open that document. But while that document is open, if I go to file-open, it then freezes again. Anyone know how to fix this?

That is I take it Pages '06? Which is a bit long in the tooth.
I'm trying unsuccessfully to find the minimum requirement for OSX 10.6, but yours may not be compatible with Snow Leopard.
Your contacts are no doubt using either Pages '08 or Pages '09 which as later versions can open yours but you can not open theirs.
Updating from Pages '06 is a no brainer IMHO.
