Open CS5 documents in InDesign CC

When opening InDesign CS5 files in InDesign CC it is opening up as "converted" and forcing us to "Save As". Is there an easy way to forcibly overwrite the document instead of save as?
We're having the same problem with InDesign server scripts failing because if ID server CC opens a CS5 file it will not forcibly save as CC and will throw an error.
This is a problem for us because we need do not want our users manually going in and trying to find the right path to save their documents as they're all stored on a network share.

Simply try saving with the same name. It will effectively over-write your file as you want. The "[converted]" I find this to be a courtesy to let you know at a glance that you're working on an older version document. As far as the path issue, I can't answer that, as I use a third party program which, with a single keystroke, takes me to the original folder the files resides in. It's called Default Folder, and I've found it indispensable since 1999. Try it, you'll love it. It's from St. Claire Software.
Cheers!

I second LibreOffice as it's the most recent fork, however NeoOffice and OpenOffice will also work.
Just say No money to Redmond!
Also the old Ready Set Go! will be having a Lion version out soon.
It's a low cost page layout program (like Indesign but without the high price) and can make booklets etc better, import the excel grpahics from LibreOffice.

  • I can't open CS5 documents in CS4

I can't open CS5 documents in CS4. I know I need to update my plugins, but when I go to updates it says there are none. I have a hardcopy of CS4, is there a way to download CS4 electronically so I can receive all the updates I need? I have no idea how to do this manually . . . or maybe I just need to upgrade to CS5?

Or else you need to update CS4 to the 6.0.6 patch...

I cannot open any documents in InDesign after downloading Yosemite.  Says I need Java 6.  I have Java 8 and still doesn't open.

It may seem strange indeed, but yes, you have to ALSO install the older version 6 for Apple's system; other applications will use your Java (which I believe is now even 9) and others will use that version 6.
    Download directly from Apple here:

  • Open .xml documents into InDesign?

Is there a way to open .xml documents into InDesign, or any Adobe program?
The goal is to access text from a web site feed and place it in an Indesign doc, to create a print product.

You can't open XML but you can certainly utilize it.

  • How can I force Indesign cs5 to open cs5 documents when both cs5 and cs6 is installed?

We are using Indesign with cs5-specific plugins. Due to that we have both cs5 and cs 6 installed on our workstations. Trying to assign cs5 documents (INDD) to cs5, windows refuses to let us choose indesign.exe (cs5). How can we force cs5 to be the chosen application for .indd?

The best way is using Soxy:

  • When I open a document in InDesign CC the window extends underneath the panels.

Prior to CC, InDesign would open my document windows with the right edges of them stopping where the left edge of the panels start. Now it opens them with the windows extending underneath the panels. Any ideas on how to get them to open the old way? It's a minor inconvenience, but it's like a tiny splinter and has been bugging me for a while. Thanks.

Tried, no dice. Even tried closing all panels, then just opening one (Pages) to see if I could get that right. Nope. :-/
These screengrabs show the right side after I tried opening a new document. I made the changes with no documents opened.

  • Problems opening psd document in InDesign CS 5.5

    Hey everyone
I'm having a problem with InDesign. I'm using InDesign CS 5.5. I'm trying to open a psd document in InDesign and I keep receiving the following message :
" Cannot open the file. "Fiche final.psd". Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing or the file may be open in another application."
Any ideas as to what I could do? I have Photoshop CS 5.1
    Thanks in advance
    S.

You don't open Photoshop PSDs in InDesign, you PLACE them!
InDesign is a layout application and you PLACE images and text in your InDesign document.
You only use OPEN to open other InDesign documents.
You should get a book about InDesign or read the Help files.
I see that Bob beat me to it. I'm sure he can give you a link to a good InDesign book.

  • Open CS5 Document in CS3

Help. There appears, from my limited knowledge, that there is no way to get a CS5 document into CS3 (without CS4).
This is very bad. I have CS5 documents from customers and I can no longer open the files. CS3 does not know about .idml files and CS5 doesn't know about .inx files.
Please tell me Adobe is fixing this! This is a huge mistake on Adobe's part just assuming that everybody upgrades to every new version. We do not have CS4 and don't have access to it.
Please tell me Adobe is going to allow CS5 to create .inx files that can be read by CS3.
Does anyone know anything about making this happen?
Or, another way to get a CS5 document into CS3?
    Thanks,
    David Whitmyre

    Thaks for the perspective, Bob.
I don't think Adobe is evil, as some certainly do.
I think their prices are high, but hey, they make great products (my opinion). Your point about the cost per day does put things in perspective when looked at that way, but I know many who have held off, being that business has not been so good. For myself, I have upgraded every product I have used at just about every version (skipped a few). I started this "back in the day" using Pagemaker 1 on Windows ver. 2 (yea, some people have no idea that even existed!), Corel Draw ver 1, Photoshop Ver 2, Illustrator, Ventura Publisher (Xerox) ver 1, FrameMaker (when it still belonged to Frame). Fractal Design Painter, Flash, Dreamweaver, blah, blah, blah. Pretty much, you name, I've used it and upgraded it until it died. I've spent thousands upon thousands of dollars on software. However, as you make your point, the payback, if your are in business to make money, is far greater. I have made 100-fold back from what I have put into the purchase and upgrade of the software I use.
I also know it it is no easy task to fix or even add new things into software. I have worked for several software companies over the years. Believe me, I know. I do also know that just about every product I have used has had the ability to downgrade a file back several versions at least. Adobe has to know that there are lots of people out there using CS3 for real-world work. And, unless they live on an island, it is likely they will be working with people who have CS5. Just sayin', seems a little too close to cut it off, even if it is because of features. Make some sort of downgrade ability.
    Just my perspective.
    Thanks,
    David

  • Open CS5 Documents in Earlier Versions (CS2, CS3, CS4)

I am currently working on some documents in CS5.
Others need to access these files but they are not on CS5.
Is there a way to save down the files from CS5 so they can use them in the earlier versions?
Or is there another way besides saving down that I can give them the files for their use?
    Thanks for the help!

Yes there is. How many older versions do you have installed on your computer? (You need all of those you mentioned expect for the very oldest one.)
Just like most software that produces extremely complicated files, InDesign cannot 'save as' any old version. There simply is no way to 'convert' most new features into stuff that works with an older version of the program -- think of spanned columns, cross references, grep styles, footnotes, tables.
You can export your document to a format that can be opened with ONE (1 -- that's one, not two or three) previous version. All features that were new in your current version will silently disappear, and will not show up or be visibile or leave any remark or note in the document when opened in the older version.
Apart from that, there have been updates of other parts of the program, even though to the casual user they appear to work the same. One I know of is the Paragraph Composer -- this has been changed from CS3 to CS4, meaning that if you open and edit text from a CS3 document into CS4, it will be reformatted. In the other direction, the same will happen.
Given all this, are you absolutely sure you want to even try this? There is absolutely no guarantee exporting down to one older version will create a usable document. Saving down two, three or more versions is hopelessly optimistic for anything more complicated than a plain-text newsletter.

I just downloaded indesign and after twenty minutes of trrying to find the damn app now I don't know how to open one of my documents. what format does it have to be in to be openable? or I have just wasted my money?

  • Intermittent problem - CS5 document opens grey when starting InDesign

Users PC specs - Windows 7, dual core processor, 1+ GBs of ram (most cases 2+ GB), InDesign CS5.
    (200+ InDesign users)
I have had several users complain about documents opening completely grey. The whole document, including text is greyed out. The only thing you can see is outlines of frames. It does not happen all of the time, and usually restarting InDesign solves the problem. I know for a fact it is not a display performance problem where the user has their display performance set to "fast". It is the whole document that is grey and not just the images.
We have tried deleting preferences, uninstalling/reinstalling InDesign, all with no luck. One user has this happen several times on a daily basis.
If anyone has any available information on what might be causing this issue, it would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

I have some updates to this problem -
    Attempted resolutions -
    Patch 7.0.3 has been applied
    Drivers have been updated
    Bios has been updated
ID CS5 has been removed and reinstalled
    Preferences have been deleted
So far, none of these have helped resolve the problem. I've been told that the application crashes 2 out of 3 times when opening a document. InDesign only crashes when opening a document though, not when launching the application alone. This does not happen on a specific document.
There is also an application error recorded in the event log when this happens -
Faulting application name:InDesign.exe, version: 7.0.3.535 time stamp: 0x4ca67222
Faulting module name: Public.dll, version: 7.0.3.535, time stamp: 0x4ca671ad
    Exception code: 0xc0000005
This is what InDesign looks like before it actually crashes -

  • Indesign CC crashing while opening a document - using a exteral font program

After a few days of terror and trying to find out why my Indesign crashed everytime i try to open a document i got pretty desperate.
Reading forums and found a lot of people with this kind of issue i found out it had something to do with the font i used in that document.
I found out Indesign CC keeps all fonts that you open before in the dropdownlist, even that font is deactivated. So when you open the document your indesign start to look for that font, also typekit does, and that's where the problem was...
After trying a few things i found out, if you know what font u use in that document and you activate that font in your extern fontprogram (i use Universal type client),
Open than Indesign, the document opens, if you want to open the font when Indesign is open it just crash.
Just wanted to share this, hope it helps some people

Check for Third Party plugins. Make sure that you only have plugins that come with InDesign application. Remove custom/sample plugins and try again.
If the above doesn't work, delete InDesign preferences (at C:\Documents and Settings\...\Application Data\Adobe\InDesign).

Unfortunately the Windows report doesn't offer anything terribly useful for us here.
I suspect this is some sort of configuration conflict rather than a file problem, though. Do you have another system you can try to open the files with? If not I'd be willing to try one here to see if it will open.

  • INDD CS6 error: "InDesign cannot open files in the "InDesign CS5.5 Document" format.

Working in CS6 on Mac OS X 10.7.5: When I double click an INDD file in the Finder, I get the following error from InDesign:
"The document "doc name" could not be opened. InDesign cannot open files in the "InDesign CS5.5 Document" format."
This just started recently and I have not been able to figure out why. I have not updated INDD or OS X. I can't think of anything else that changed, other than maybe a Java update. Have not updated to the latest OS yet.
The files I'm trying to open are files I created with CS6 - as recent as a few minutes ago.  I can open them fine using the File>Open command in InDesign so I can open them, but I can't open them by double clicking them in Finder or dragging them to the INDD icon in the dock.
The info in Finder's "Get Info" window says they are CS6 files set to open in CS6 and I have permissions to read and write. They are not locked.
This is not incapacitating, but rather annoying and slows me down since this is one of the most common ways I open files.
    Any suggestsion would be appreciated.

Probably won't work because it sounds like an OS problem of some sort, but you can try trashing the prefs. See Replace Your Preferences
