Open DNS better than Comcast xfinity DNS?

Is OpenDNS better than using Comcast/xfinity's DNS? If yes, how do I switch over?
I go to into Airport Utility and enter in the 2 openDNS numbers, something like 222 and 220, but at the bottom of the page right now (because I am using Comcast's DNS) there's a web address something.comcast.net  Do I need to change that info too? If so, what do I put in that field?
Thanks!

How did you add them?
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:

If your computer is part of a network: please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/bestpractices/#yournetwork and follow the advice given.
(An explanation of why using Open DNS is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 /
Open DNS also provides an anti-phishing feature: http://www.opendns.com/solutions/homenetwork/anti-phishing/ )

  • Why Does FIOS Quantum Offer Less than Comcast Xfinity?

It is coming time for my FIOS contract to be renewed and I am having a hard time justifying renewing it.  FIOS Quantum was a huge disappointment for us because:
    1. The Remote control lag is terrible, even trying all the reboots etc. IR remotes have been around for ages, this should work, AND it's ridiculous to have to shutdown and reboot all the set top boxes to fix a memory leak at this stage of programming.
    2. Althoough the VMS1100 has eSATA ports, they are not enabled.  You cannot export shows to a computer or an external hard drive, both of which I could do with TiVo.
    3. ALthough FIOS has an app for my iPad, all I can do is "see" and set up recordings, I can't watch anything from my DVR on my iPad or a Windows PC, AND the FIOS app ONLY works when it's on the same WiFi Network as the DVR, it doesn't;t work over the Internet.
In theory at least Comcast Xfinity does all of the above.
So my question is, why should I stick with FIOS?  I hve read the forums for months and there is no word from Verizon that they acknowledge these deficits to Xfinity, much less that they have any plans to address these shortfalls in the future.
Without the hope that Verizon is addressing their shortcomings, maybe it is time to move on to what seems to be the better wide area connected service.

I agree. They have stolen more of my life then that even.

  • Wifi better than Comcast?

Is the wifi network that comes along with the Time Capsule generally considered better and faster than that of my other home wifi provided by Comcast?

Gottta admit, I am new to all this but what I can find about my router that I have from Comcast  is----
    Make & Model:
    TECHNICOLOR tc8305c
I also have the newest Time Capsule.  So, what do you think I should be primarily using?
From Comcast, I have the plan Extreme 150 that is 150 mbps download but I don't think I get anywhere near that.

  • My palm calendar wont open after Lion download.  Palm is so much better than ical,  is it not going to work w/ Lion?

Palm calendar won't open now that I've downloaded Lion. Palm is so much better than ical.  Is there a fix?

I miss Palm Desktop for Mac. The integration of contacts, to-dos, notes, appointments, etc. was great. I stopped using it about a year ago when I finally sold my Palm Tungsten T and purchased and iPhone 4. iCal etc. work fine for me, but they're not as good as Palm Desktop was.
I also miss Graffiti 1 handwriting recognition. I could write with it as fast and flawlessly as I can write longhand on paper, and nearly as fast as I can type. It was the best for meetings and interviews, since I could write without having to look at the screen. iOS has nothing that comes close; I've gotten used to the onscreen keyboard but it's slower, I make far more mistakes, and I have to keep my eye on the screen while typing.
As others have pointed out, Palm Desktop was written for PPC processors. Lion does not include and cannot run Rosetta, which is the emulation environment which allowed Intel processors to run PPC code. So Palm Desktop will not run on a Mac running Lion.
I was syncing to my Palm Tungsten T under Snow Leopard (and using Palm Desktop) with no troubles at all. There are third-party sync options available, but they're all kludgy and unreliable compared to Palm's own syncing. Again, though, the Palm software for syncing was written for PPC processors and so won't run on any Mac booting into Lion.

I've read a lot of comments/suggestions about camera issues that it turns black when opening the phone camera but nothing is worked for me. I'm so frustrate on my iPhone 5s im using it like for a month, I thought its more better than Samsung but I failed. Please help!!! I hope apple has something to do about this. Thanks.

I would have had the phone looked at long before a month of problems.
First thing to try is to reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.
If that doesn't help Make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your device examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support. You phone is under warranty and someone at an Apple store can help you.

  • After a recent comcast / xfinity update I have been unable to even connect to the internet using firefox. I can using internet explorer.

After a recent comcast / xfinity update I have been unable to even connect to the internet using firefox. I can using internet explorer.

Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
Restart the router. Many problems are solved that way.
    Step 2
Change the name of the wireless network, if applicable, to eliminate any characters other than letters and digits. You do that on your router via its web page, if it's not an Apple device, or via AirPort Utility, if it is an Apple device.
    Step 3
    Run the Network Diagnostics assistant.
    Step 4
    Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Enter the name of your wireless network in the search box. You should have one or more "AirPort network password" items with that name. Make a note of the name and password, then delete all the items. Quit Keychain Access. Turn Wi-Fi off and then back on. Reconnect to the network.
    Step 5
You may need to change other settings on the router. See the guidelines linked below:
Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    Potential sources of interference
    Step 6
Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
    Step 7
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).

  • "it's always DNS" - Need Help setting network/DNS settings for MacMini Serv

Well, I must admit defeat and ask for help. I've set up an Xsan or 2, but for the life of me cannot set up my mac mini server. My basic two problems seem to be these:
    1) Service Order in System Preferences/Network
I want to run my private LAN through Ethernet, using a 10.1.17. IP range, and use my Airport Extreme Base Station (Technically a Time Capsule) for the Public ISP 192.168.1 DHCP service. Cannot get both to work. The only way I can get the server to work and to be able to login using Open Directory is to either set the Ethernet as Primary for both my client and server, in which case there is no internet service AT ALL for either. I have a sneaking suspicion it has something to do with either DNS or a few extra DNS entries in the ethernet or airport categories, but for the life of me I cannot find the right combination. Is there any way to have BOTH Ethernet LAN and Airport internet service?
    2) Related to the first question, I think, is that my local FQDN (not registered, just meant for internal LAN use only right now) and DNS name only show up to my client computer in Server Admin, Directory Utility, Workgroup Manager if I DISABLE my airport card. Otherwise, they come up as <servername>.local and not the FQDN <servername>.editdog.com, and I cannot login using OD.
    3) I'm not sure what happend to the Binding I used to have to do in OSX Server 10.5, but maybe that's the issue? I have the Peachpit OSX Server Essentials Book, and it's been less than helpful.
    Any ideas out there?

  • What Is an Appropriate Hostname & DNS Zone Configuration for External DNS Setup?

I setup servers that are hosted on a secure external data centre. The data centre has its own DNSS, so the DNS service is never setup on the server itself, and is handled by the data centre. I have already setup a handful of servers, and they all seem to be working well. Nevertheless, a couple of people in these discussions have told me, that I'm not setting the servers up 'properly' because of the way I'm naming the server - ie., they believe I'm assigning a 'wrong' hostname - and because of the way I'm setting up subdomains in the zone file. Here is how I'm currently doing it:
    CURRENT SETUP:
The server is public, and it is also the ONLY machine publicly in the domain zone. So, if the client's domain is "example.com", there is only one machine that will respond to all services in that domain. Because of this:
    - Server Hostname: "example.com"
    - reverse DNS PTR record points to "example.com"
    -  'mail.example.com', 'www.example.com', 'ftp.example.com', etc, are all setup as A records that point to the same IP address as "example.com".
This has been working fine so far. I have not had any problems with any service, including mail. However, a couple of people suggested that "example.com" is not a fully qualified domain name, and that this setup is therefore  'incorrect', and that it will cause me problems in the future. They suggest I should be setting these servers up like this:
    SUGGESTED SETUP:
    - Server Hostname: "server.example.com"
    - reverse DNS PTR record points to "server.example.com"
    - setup "www.example.com" as a record pointing to the same IP address as "server.example.com", but avoid setting up other subdomains unless absolutely necessary - ie., tell client to use "server.example.com" as the 'proper' address for mail/ftp/etc.
Technically, 'net', 'company.net' and 'server.company.net' can all be fully qualified domain names, if each one of them points unequivocally to a single IP address. An domain name is not fully qualified, for instance, when it points to a subnet instead of a single IP address. Using "example.com" as a FQDN is technically correct. However, what is 'technically correct' and what Server considers acceptable are not always the same thing....
I certainly don't want my clients to have problems in the future, and if OS X Server is going to misbehave because of the way I'm setting up my hostname and zone files, I need to know for sure NOW rather than later!

I'm the "other people" referenced here.
For general information on DNS, please acquire and skim a copy of Cricket Liu's DNS and BIND book.  It was on its fifth edition when last I checked.  DNS server on OS X Server is the ISC BIND server, which is discussed in that book in some detail.
If configuring OS X Server in a data center, the OS X Server box probably does not want (nor need) to be running a local DNS server.  (Running local DNS services just means that DNS server will potentially become part of a DNS DDoS, if who can issue queries to the server isn't carefully controlled.)  Use the DC DNS server(s).
If you want the domain itself to be used as an IP address (eg: example.com), then that's usually an A record, particularly if you're getting email via that domain (and not an MX record going elsewhere).  Some versions of OS X Server have had some issues with setting up this record within Server Admin.app and Server.app.
The previous issues were likely due to stale DNS translations lurking within the configuration, and caching of that data up to the TTL.  (FWIW, this discussion is related to this thread and this thread.)

  • What's better than Illustrator?

I've been using Illustrator for many years and several versions.  My usage is nominal and occasional/once a week, and I don't get very sophisticated for my needs, so it has been OK so far. I do not do commercial work but know Ai is the "de-facto std".
But I read this forum often and see many criticisms of Ai and I do have occasional issues with Illy with tools and UI....just not as easy or robust as it could/should be...cumbersome at times.
I see JET and others here make great use of Illy but also criticize (justifiably) it for not being as good as other vector tools.
I know there are competitors, Inkscape is free, others less costly than Illy; and seemingly better/easier/faster to use...at least for some things.
So my question: What is better than Illustrator (I'm using CS5) and why? What can they do better than Ai?  Is it worth having a second program and learning (tho I suspect the learning curve should be easy as they do similar things but have different GUI).  Or replacing Illy with something?
Pro's/Con's that would make one make the effort to try/use something else?  I don't even know what out there is better than Illy.  I've searched www and got a few hints but nothing very significant.
Am I wasting my time looking?
Your feedback welcomed to help me decide whether to explore/trial other programs.

I see JET and others here...criticize (justifiably) it for not being as good as other vector tools.
I can't speak for "and others", but since I'm the only one you mention by name:
If you've already deemed the criticism justifiable, then you must already know what that criticism says. When I criticize Illustrator, I don't just say "Illustrator is crap" and leave it at that, unsupported. I'm careful to explain myself with facts pertinent to the context of the discussion. I actually own and know how to use the other programs to which I compare. I've often posted lists of comparitive features.
I've always used my real name here and sign all my posts with my initials. So finding my comments is not difficult.
I know there are competitors, Inkscape is free, others less costly than Illy; and seemingly better/easier/faster to use...at least for some things. So my question: What is better than Illustrator (I'm using CS5) and why? What can they do better than Ai?
Didn't you just answer your own question? Other than the broadly general things you just mentioned, what program do you want to compare, and for doing what? Surely you're not asking someone to do an exhaustive feature-by-feature comparison between Illustrator and all similar programs in this one thread?
All you've said about what you use Illustrator for is that your use is nominal, occasional, unsophisticated, and non-commerical. Mine isn't. Commerical graphics has been my livelihood for over 40 years. Vector-based illustration is both a speciality and a passion.
    I...knowAi is the "de-facto std"
"Defacto standard" is self-fulfilling. It's effectively equivalent to saying "More people use Illustrator because more people use Illustrator."
So what? More people ride Vespa scooters than KTM motorcycles. But which one would you call "professional quality"? You can use either one to pick up a gallon of orange juice at the corner store. But if you enter an enduro, the KTM will get the job done with alot less stress.
The myth is that most software buyers choose the best. That's as naive as the faith that most voters do.
Illustrator has been slothfully resting on its "defacto standard" haunches since the dark ages (AKA the 80s). "Defacto standard" be hanged.
I do have occasional issues with Illy with tools and UI....just not as easy or robust as it could/should be...cumbersome at times.
Okay. What issues? State something specific and users actually familiar with other programs can compare.
This is the 21st century. There's really little new under the sun here. A 2D drawing program is just an interface pasted on top of mostly the same old geometric functionality. The competitive advantage goes to the offering that best (easy) and most fully (robust) empowers the user. The multiplication of easy and robust yields elegance. That's a term I've never applied to Illustrator. Illustrator is one of the oldest of the bunch, lounging under the sun for so long it's at risk of skin cancer. Yet it still fails to provide basic functionality users of other drawing programs have taken for granted for decades.
Examples that may be germane to your casual, non-commerical use? Try these things in Illustrator:
Star Tool: Draw a star. Now change the number of points it has.
Arc Tool: Draw 36 degrees of a circular arc.
Label that star with a dimension.
Distribute a group of different objects along a curve.
Uniformly space Blend steps along a non-uniform curve.
Attach a Blend to a closed path and have the first/last instances properly positioned.
Knife Tool: Cut across an open unfilled path.
Connect a text label to an object that stays connected when you move it.
Paste a simple graphic into a text string so that it flows with the text.
Perform a Find/Replace on carriage returns.
Round Corners: Apply it to an accute or obtuse angle and have it actually yield the radius you specify.
    Crop a raster image.
Rotate something. Go back later and find out what its rotation angle is.
Pathfinders: Use them without wrecking existing fills/strokes.
I could go on (and have). How long a list do you want? All the features/functions associated with the above basic operations (and many more) are substandard, half-baked, or even non-existent in Illustrator. This is "professional"-grade software? No, it's largely consumerish rubbish sold at exhorbitant prices just because it's the "defacto standard."
Is it worth having a second program and learning...
Obviously, it is to me (and a third, and a fourth, and...). As I've said many times in this forum, I don't know how anyone can legitimately claim to compare two programs if they've only got workaday familiarity with one.
As with any other endeavor, the more drawing programs you're comfortable with, the less arduous it is to pick up another, because you tend to pick up on the underlying principles involved, as opposed to just becomming habituated to a particular program's command locations and procedures by rote.
But you've been using AI for "many years" and find it to be "OK". So if you're happy with it, use it.
I have a cheap, consumerish Ryobi table saw and it's "OK." But I didn't pay a professional-grade price for it, either. And I'm sure not going to write glorious reviews on it, call it "professional," and get all fearfully brand-loyal defensive about it if someone dares suggest I might ought to learn to use a different one. My use of it, like yours, is merely occasional. But I also presently need to build a TV cabinet, and I'm dreading it. If I were to open a cabinet shop, I'd be much more discriminating, and would do my own homework to make an informed decision.
    Or replacing Illy with something?
One doesn't have to "replace." There's nothing any more wrong with using more than one 2D drawing program than there is with using more than one 3D modeling program, or raster imaging program, or page layout program, or word processor, or video edting program, or....
Pro's/Con's that would make one make the effort to try/use something else?
That depends on what one is doing with it. Not knowing that, I can again only offer generalities that matter to me: If you've only ever used one program of a particulat kind, you're rather in the dark regarding functionality that you may be missing that may be important to you. (Second-degree ignorance: You don't know what you don't know.) If you're mission-dependent upon that one program, you're also kind of captive to the whims and agenda of its vendor.
That very well may not matter to you, given your nominal, occasional, unsophisticated, and non-commerical use. And if so, that's fine.
I don't even know what out there is better than Illy. I've searched www and got a few hints but nothing very significant.
But you just said you've been reading a bunch of posts here which mention other programs.
Am I wasting my time looking?
Only you can answer that about your time. Time is all any of us have.
Your feedback welcomed to help me decide whether to explore/trial other programs.
No offense, but frankly it sounds like you're just not motivated enough to do your own homework. If you are  sufficiently motivated, visit the websites of other drawing program vendors. Read the features lists. Dowload the demos, read the documentation, and try them out. Visit the programs' user forums. Or, if it's really not that important to you, don't.
If you've got questions about specific functionality and/or specific programs, be more specific about what you do (or want to do).

I am living in this SAME nightmare!  Help.  I spent ALL day yesterday 8 hours on the phone with many many different people, some who were just plain RUDE and others who all contradicted each other. Sent me to get a new modem and we did that, speed still like the above.Called today, got a decent guy he tried helping for a while then phone cut out.  No call back.UMMM really?  Then yesterday during Chat, they guy just shut me off.I have 105 per my preferred bundle.  Really want to get that.  SOOOO Angry, if they did NOT have MONOPOLY on my community I would switch.  I however have NO one to switch to.  SO unamerican.  Poor service, HIGH prices. I left service center in tears as I watched elderly couple hobble out on their canes wondering how they can pay the increase to their bill.  That is just NOT right.

  • Why not reporting on DSO is better than Cube,DSO is more denormalized?

    Hi,
As it is said that for better reporting response, all dataware house solution are denormalized. Normalized tables take more time in executing report.
Then why not reporting on DSO is better than Cube?
Cube is said to have multidimensional structure. But DSO has more denormalized data than cube.
Please correct me..." Cube is not completely denormalized". It has links between fact table and dimension tables.
    Thanks !!

  • Why is LR5 catalog better than PSE 12 Organiser?

    Hi/
I have started using a trial version of LR5.
I have been a regular user of various versions of PSE over the years.
Generally, I have been happy with the organiser, & have various tags nested in each-other.
I have never had a problem with it being unstable, & can normally find what I am looking for,
(provided that I have correctly tagged it in the first place :-)
My first impression of the LR5 catalogue is that it is not as intuitive.
I have searched on-line for how to set-up the catalogue & much of the discussion relates to how many catalogues to have. - I've already made that decision - Just the one:
So?  What features am I missing in the LR5 catalogue that make it better than the Elements Organiser?
    What do you think?

I am also a happy user of the Organizer, but I also use LR 4.4.
What I find interesting in LR:
    - huge amount of possible customization and options (if you need them...)
    - Ability to manage jpegs just as raws (the organizer does not let you open jpegs in acr, )
    - Smart ways to manage variants without copying files (virtual copies)
    - More advanced metadata management
    - possibility to merge catalogs
    - Much more support by Adobe and user forums
    - More advanced options in output in the latest versions
What can be debated is the difficulty of the learning curve as well as the 'robustness' of the software. The organizer was plagued with many bugs (it was already there many years before LR.) The problem is that having many more options makes LR much more complex. For instance the database has three times the number of tables. The result is that the LR forums are full of complaints about bugs or missing features... just because it is too rich and tries to satisfy everybody's needs.
Many cases of problems with the Organizer are related to the backup function which backs up both pictures and catalogs. Lr only backup catalogs. Backing up pictures is your responsability. If you have problems, it's not LR's fault, it's yours .
I can't find a post I made to show the possible advantages of the organizer, but that was just for the fun.

So after a couple of hours of playing around and testing I've finally found the correct settings to achieve this, I wasn't able to find the configuration options through the Windows Airport Utility client but borrow a MacBook Air from a family member and was able to find it:
    1. Open the AirPort Utility on a Mac computer.
    2. Click on your AirPort Device, then click "Edit".
    3. Select the "Internet" tab.
    4. Now in the "Domain Name" section type "yourhostname.ddns.net" or it could be "yourhostname.no-ip.com" or whatever other hostname No-IP.com may have assigned you.
    5. Now click the "Internet Options" button.
    6. At the bottom of the windows that opened tick the check box "Use dynamic global hostname"
    7. In the "Hostname" section fill it with "no-ip.ddns"
    8. In the "User" & "Password" sections fill it with the username and password that you chose when creating your "No-IP.com" account.
    9. Now click "Save" which will save the settings and click "Update" to update the Airport device which will also restart it.
    And you're done!
Please note that it does sometimes take up to 5 to 10 minutes to update the DNS settings to No-IP.com, which caused me to think it wasn't working initially.
    Good luck!

  • Is firefox adblock plus make it better than safari?

    hi
    just quick shoot question.
i 99% uses firefox browser with add on called adblock plus 2.03
it never shows advertisement like the mackeeper that so frequently harrased me when i used safari. this made me scared of unintended clicking on my part.
are there similar thing on safari?
i just dont feel secure with safari, because once i opened it, and in few minutes pop up ads and mackeeper coming out of nowhere....
hope ur not mad at me for favoring firefox. but i really think if safari has same adblock i would move back, as i feel it is wierd that firefox could do better than mac... its nigh impossible... ?

You're certainly free to use Firefox if that works for you. There are similar add-on web blockers for Safari, including a version of AdBlock:
    http://code.google.com/p/adblockforchrome/
Personally I don't like browser-specific blocking add-ons since they can break with any browser upgrade, so I use GlimmerBlocker. It's a stand-alone ad blocker (it works sort of like a web proxy system) and hence works with any browser you run on your system, so you don't need an ad blocking add-on for each browser.
But if Firefox works for you, by all means use it. Many people do.
    Regards.
