Thought previously that the disk permissions would completely resolve the issue but was still experiencing some problems that others have described. Saw another post on open dns so googled it and found this article: http://appletoolbox.com/2010/06/safari-5-0-hangs-while-loading-pages-fix/
Plugged in the numbers for the open dns and all seems to be fine in the Safari 5 universe now!

Adding DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security:
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:

Yes, exactly. You can always input those addresses again, if it does not solve the problem.
OpenDNS may offer some advantages over your whatever your ISP uses for DNS but optimizing download speed is not one of them.
Maybe I have jumped to the conclusion that Open DNS is the problem when maybe it isn't.
It is possible. As I understand it, Apple's servers attempt to use a location near you to deliver iTunes content, and OpenDNS may result in pointing it to a less ideal location.
3 hours may or may not be normal for HD movie. The download speed depends on a number of factors that are difficult to surmise without knowing details about your network and your ISP. -

Safari 5 issues resolved since using OPEN DNS/working fine here at WEGMAN'S
my issues have been resolved since using OPEN DNS codes. have been using the internet at home and also am using it at WEGMAN'S right now and seems to run fine. i'm satisfied! btw, cnet.com gave Safari 5 an excellent rating.

Use Open DNS Free / Basic No more problems with DNS. Includes anti phishing filters.
For Safari. Empty the cache more often. From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Empty Cache. A faster way is: Option + Command + E on your keyboard.
And from your Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Advanced tab.
Click: Change Settings next to: Proxies. That will prompt the System Preferences / Network pane
Make sure none of the boxes are selected under: *Select a protocol to configure* If there are, deselect the box, then click: OK.

Please help me. My YouTube app will not work. Every time I open it says 'cannot connect to youtube'. I have searched for help and tried resetting my settings and rebooting my ipad2 but nothing has solved the issue.
Yes, I am connected to the Internet through my wifi. Everything is working fine with the e eption of youtube. I have reset all Internet settings and have tried synching to iTunes followed by rebooting. This is all the advice I have found although none of it has been helpful.

My address bar has disappeared in Safari 5.1 - not the same issue as discussed elsewhere in Forum
My address bar has disappeared in Safari 5.1. When I click "Customize Toolbar" to fix it, the Home and arrow buttons become unusable--they just click but nothing happens.See image below.
I have to close the window and open a new one to get the buttons to work, but the address bar does not return.
I am running OS 10.6.8.

Re the toolbar. Since this issue started after the 5.1 update, could be a third party Safari add on that was compatible with the prior version of Safari but not 5.1 that's preventing the Toolbar to load correctly.

Issue with opening PDF file link from Safari
Hi Everyone,
I got a problem with opening PDF file link from Safari 4.04. Instead of getting a normal pdf content, it shows some weird characters. Not sure it is something wrong with Adobe Reader Plugin or Safari?

JohnThere's nothing wrong, except the fact that you have Adobe Reader installed. You don't need it, so get rid of it; it will only cause problems with Safari. What you're seeing is the contents of the PDF file, rather than having it displayed.
If you want to download a PDF file, you can either Control-click on the link and choose "Download Linked File As…", or you can Option-click on the link for the file and it will be downloaded to your Download folder (usually your Desktop).
If you want to view a PDF file in Safari, you don't need Adobe Reader; Safari is perfectly capable of doing this by itself and has been for years. Adobe Reader will only get in the way and slow everything down. -
Adventures in Safari Land...Upgraded the other night to 5.1 running OS 10.6.8. Everything seemed to go well except for some Netflix strangeness and content missing on my Site. Tried a number of things but site would not display main graphic and some links were dead. Site worked perfectly using Firefox on same Mac and looked lovely in Safari 5.05 on a G5. Started messing with some HTML but nothing seemed to work. Time for a starry spin on the ole Time Machine, 5.0.5 re-installed but problem persists....Tried 10.6.8 Combo & Pacifist and still no Joy....Only one thing left to try.....Time for the Shiny Brand New System Install...Insert Snow Leopard Disk customize agree to all the Apple Goodness... install begins...off to do other stuff for a while...........Come Back: Thou must Restart your machine for good things to happen....Lights, Music, Welcome to Safari! (5.05) Full Safari Goodness Restored! Time to enjoy third glass of frozen Coffee of the day.

Periodically "safari can't open the page" - not a ISP issue
Periodically I will have an issue where I click on a link and anything from the website cannot be opened for about 2 minutes. I get the following message "Safari can’t open the page “https://xxxxxxxxxxxxxx/” because Safari can’t find the server “xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx”."
Here are some important notes:
I can access the website on my phone while the issue is occurring on my macbook pro
I can access all other websites
The issue lasts for about 2-3 minutes and all webpages with that address will not work
Any thoughts how to resolve the issue?(Presumably you regularly empty your Safari cache by deleting the following file: Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/cache.db and also clear your History)
One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x as is described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
You can cancel DNS pre-fetching by going to Terminal and typing:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
You have to restart Safari for it to take effect.
If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page. Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The latest versions of Flash 10.1 and later appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.

The main reason I mentioned your ISP is that their servers may be too busy, which is why I suggested Open DNS. -
Open dns resolver issues on windows server 2008 R2
my client is running a windows 2008 r2 server with dns and dhcp roles. it's not a domain controller, just a workgoup server.
got a notification from my client's isp:
"These attacks have been facilitated through DNS
amplification attacks. AT&T has detected these attacks and has confirmed
that the IP address x.x.x.x allocated to your Internet access account is
accessible from the Internet as an open DNS resolver. "
tried disabling recursion, but then there is no access to the internet.
tried disabling the firewall rule for dns udp, and no access to the internet.
does anyone have any idea how to correct this? do i need to add a public dns server to my dhcp scope for internet access? if i do, then what good is a dns server and it doesn't resolve internet addresses?
GaryJust to add, I was wondering why you had port 53 opened to your DNS servers. And just to point out, that rule you created is a port translation rule that allows access to your DNS server from the internet, just as if you had created a rule to allow access
to an internal web server for public use, or for allowing webmail (OWA) access from the internet to your internal mail server.
What you did, as Keith said, will stop that, but to further point out, the rules are not really needed again, I would just remove the rules completely. For internet access, such as allowing your users to access websites, your DNS to resolve external names
(whether using Root hints or a Forwarder), just about any firewall will allow that out-of-the-box. In some firewalls, you have to create a rule to the outside untrusted interface to "allow established" meaning when an internal request goes to an outside resource,
such as a website, to allow the response back in.
The only time you want to create rules is either you want to allow inbound traffic with a port translation rule (such as what you originally unknowingly did for TCP & UDP 53) to a web server, OWA, SMTP traffic to a mail server, etc.), otherwise,
leave it out of the box.
As for what the ISP is concerned about regarding DNS amplification attacks, is that they are a fairly recent method for attackers to create a DOS (denial of service). You can read up at a couple of recent discussions about what all that means in

How to solve problem - " Safari cannot open page because it isn't connected to the internet" but the airport is ok. signal full and i have n IP address. and i m using Macbook pro.

I have recently upgraded my iMac to 10.6.8 and now find that the upload photo to Facebook facility no longer works. I have reset Safari but this has not resolved the issue - any suggestions? I can click on the "upload photos/video" field and it takes me to Finder to select the photo - but on selecting the photo, the Finder screen disappears as normal but from then on nothing happens.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
Click: Remove All Website Data
Now empty the Safari cache.
Back to the menu bar, click Safari > Preferences then select the Advanced tab.
Select: Show Develop menu in menu bar
Now click Develop from the menu bar. From the drop down menu click Empty Caches.
Quit and relaunch Safari then try Facebook.
If that doesn't help, it may be a Safari extension preventing you from uploading content to Facebook.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall. -
Issue with opening PDF's on Mobile Safari
I'm developing a Mobile Application in which i need to open a pre filled PDF in the browser at the end of a user session with data already entered by the user in my application. When i'm trying to open the pdf in the Safari browser on IPhone and IPad no user data is visible but if i choose the option "open in Adobe Reader" all the user data is visible.
I have a web version of the same application and all the pdf's are showing up with the user data in IE, Chrome, Opera and Safari browsers on Windows platform and Safari browser on Mac.
I'm using the following code to send a PDF to the browser

How do i restore Preview as my default viewer.
Seems adobe has hi-jacked Safari and and opens using abobe not preview.
Have uninstalled adobe but safari then will not display any pdf files.

What kind of files? PDFs? or Others as well?
If you want Preview to open all PDFs, then find a PDF on your HD.
Highlight it, and then press the Apple/Comand key along with th letter " i " key.
When the window comes up, look down to the "Open with" line, and change it from Adobe to Preview.
Then look slightly below, and select "Change All."
Now, all PDFs should open with Preview. -

Outlook Web Access sends an illegal Content-Dispositon header to Firefox. This is no longer allowed in Firefox 8. Firefox 9 will have a workaround for this so that Microsoft has time to fix their software.<br>
