Open EOS 1ds Mk III CR2 files in ACR 4.6

OS 10.4.11, CS3, G5 PPC  PS 10.1, LR 2.6
Is there a way to default open my CR2 files in the ACR 4.6 dialog when I click the "Photo" menu, then "Edit in PS" in LR?

If you find yourself wanting to open LR from ACR, you should probably just be using LR.

  • Cannot get CS3 photoshop on my mac os10 to open my canon rebel T1i .CR2 files

I have spent hours downloading a variety of stuff and still cannot get  CS3 photoshop on my mac os10 to open my canon rebel T1i .CR2 files. I  have downloaded the Camera Raw 4.6 plugin. Photoshop acknowledges that  is the version installed. But it won't recognize the .CR2 file type.  When I say show me all files, the files show up in the open file dialog,  and the thumbnails look right, but when I open the file it is munged. I  also installed the DNG Converter, which also does not recognize the  .CR2 files.
Has anyone figured this out yet? It has been almost a year. I don't want to upgrade to CS4 or 5 or buy Lightroom.

The Adobe DNG Converter 6.2 will open your files, if you have an uncorrupted download and use it properly.  No doubt about that.
Once you launch it, be sure to target a folder containing raw files, not the raw files themselves.  At least on the Mac, the DNG Converter works on folders, not on individual files.
Alternatively, you can try dragging and dropping the individual raw files onto the DNG Converter icon.
Some routine maintenance may be overdue on your Mac, such as Repairing Permissions with Apple's Disk Utility, running Onyx or Cocktail, etc.

  • Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III and Aperture 2?

I was wondering if anyone using a Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III can confirm if they're able to shoot tethered using Aperture 2? Though it's listed under the RAW support page, this model of camera is not supported in the knowledge base article called: Tips on tethered shooting.
I tried the demo and though it registered my camera, it wouldn't allow me to capture. Not sure if it's a limitation of the demo, or ignorance on my part. If you know for certain one way or another, please share.
    Thanks.

To the best of my knowledge the tethered shooting does not work with any of the newer Canon DSLRs. A workaround that may be good for you is the Aperture hot folder script that I used with Aperture 1.5. If you can't find t just hit the thread back.

  • Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III RAW support PLEASE!

Seriously, the camera was announced in August 2007. 6 months have passed and Apple has failed to provide a RAW support update for this camera!
Why is this program targeted towards professionals if RAW support takes longer than a half a year?
If this goes on much longer, I might have to make the dreaded switch to Lightroom. And i truly do not want to do that.
    Sorry, I am upset.

Large Photographic software developers (of which I'd consider Apple, with its iPhoto and Aperture applications, to be part of the group) can get early access to preproduction copies these high end cameras so their RAW definitions can be nearly complete at camera rollout time.
This is a process problem that Apple has (batching RAW definition creation and distribution for all cameras, mostly all those digicams, with OS updates). Apple needs to see this (time delay) is a problem for their Pro application users and set up a new process to to fast-track DSLR RAW definitions (creation/distribution).
The E-3 has been waiting since its release in October as well.
Word is that the new Nikon Defs are in the OS X 10.5.2 update (according to beta testers), so the E-3 and Cannon EOS 1Ds Mark III is probably in there too. Couple of weeks now...would be the expectation...no word on what you'd do if you're running 10.4.

  • 1ds mark III raw files

    Hi folks,
I use to work with Canons 1Ds Mark III raw files (all about 21MP or more).
Using Quick Preview mode everything runs fine in terms of speed.
But as soon as adjustment mode is used it takes up to 10secs to laod the raw files. (Loading...)
Comparing this to the latest DPP Version or Capture One 4.1 this seems to be an incredible long time as the other apps take 2 to 3 secs to show the raw file.
What's going on here? I suppose this to be a raw decoding issue rather than a hardware issue???
    Anyone else similar experiences ?
    kind regards Frank

i work the same files on my G5 and usually wait a few seconds to load ... soon i will upgrade to a new MacPro, but this old beast has been great for me, and i am not sure how to break it to her that i want to "trade" her in for a newer model ...
i've also heard the the ati is better .. there has been talk of it here on this board, also check out barefeats.com to see what tests they have done ...

  • Artifacts when developing CR2 files in ACR

When developing CR2 files in ACR (version 8.4), I get almost always terrible artifacts into the picture, particularly in darker shots (night, thunderstorms), which can not be completely removed in Photoshop. These show up mainly in gradients (such as sky after sunset), even if I change only a little of the settings.
With identical shots from NEF files (because sometimes two different cameras are used at the same time) this color breaks in ACR are not given.
    Why might that be?

Which Camera Profiles are you using for each camera? Have you tried different ones?

  • Problems with opening Canon 1ds III .CR2 files in CS 3

I have just purchased Photoshop CS3 student edition. However, when I try to open .CR2 files from my Canon 1ds III, a message stating that Photoshop "could not complete my request as it is not the right kind of document" appears. Whilst I can get round this by saving from DPP (which does not allow me to transfer the .CR2 files directly to Photoshop) as TIFF, this is quite slow.
Has anyone experienced a similar problem? Help on finding a cure would be much appreciated.

    Stephen,
Make sure you've got the latest version of Camera Raw. The package you have is probably compiled before the Mk3 was out.

  • How to open Canon 5D Mark III Raw files in PSE 9? [was:Updates]

I am unable to unpdate my PS E2 PSE 9 to support my Canon 5D III.  I am using a laptop.  What should I do?

Your CR2 files are not supported in PSE2. You can download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your raw files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)
Windows download (.exe file) click here DNG Converter 8.4
Mac download (.dmg file) click here DNG Converter 8.4
You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

  • SRaw support for Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III

I just shot some images in sRaw and was suprised to find the "unsupported image format" message...
I'm using Ap2, 10.5.2 and the latest graphics libraries...
Is this not supported or am I experiencing a unique problem?
I realize the convert to DNG is a workaround - but I'd rather not...

When the 1D Mark III came out (first with sRaw), I saw someone at dpreview (a sports photographer) saying that for the sort of work he did, the resolution wasn't important, but that it would be valuable to be able to send a smaller file wirelessly (using the WFT-1 or whatever it is called) to his editor. The smaller file size would speed up transfers.
On a 1Ds Mark III, the 5MP sRaw seems more useful to me, as it is more than enough for casual shooting. Though, why you would bring a 1DsIII for casual shooting is beyond me.

  • Blooming in LR4.2 EOS 5D MK III Raw Files

    Hi,
I am a show photographer dealing with many different light sources and sometimes with strong monochrome colors. It appears to me that I have now sometimes quite strong blooming effekts with LR. I opend the same files with Capture one and don´t have this effect. It seems that the camera pofile provided with LR is not working properly. Does have anybody a solution. I am happy with LR so far, but this issue let me move away from LR...
    Thanks
    Ralf
As you can see LR leaves sharp edges while C1 renders the colors more smooth. No adjustments are made.

  • Modified CR2 files in ACR and changes were not saved

I have a directory with 1400 CR2 files in it. I have a stack of picks that I am working with. I went through and for 6 hours adjusted all the images by opening them in Camera Raw and making changes to White Balance, Fill light, etc... When I was done, i clicked done to save the changes to the file (Like I've done many many times before). However most of the modifications were never saved. All the files have sidecar xmp files, but most show original files without modification. I edited approximately 580 images this way and probably 20% kept the changes and the rest "seem" to have reverted back to their original "As Shot" state. Any ideas what happened? Is this reversible or did I just waste my life?

Look at the folder in windows Explorer.   What are the time stamps on  the xmp files?  Do they appear to be "current" -- that is, timestamps approximately when you performed the ACR edits and pressed Done?  Or do 70 to 80% of them have earlier time stamps?  Current time stamps would suggest that xmp files are being written or updated, possibly omitting some ACR edit data; earlier time stamps suggest that the xmp files were not updated by ACR-Done.
Sequence the xmp files by Date Modified.   Do the xmp file time stamps appear to be in time groups?  If you clicked Done after editing 20-25 images in ACR, you would expect to see 20-25 xmp files with the same file modified date and time.  If you see this, it suggests that entire groups of edits were saved; but some groups of edits that should be saved by a Done from ACR may not have been saved to xmp.  If you see groups of substantially fewer than your usualy edit Done sets of 20-25, it suggests that only some xmp files were written.
Since it looks like that you will need to go back and redo the edits to a good many of your 580 images, you might try looking at the xmp files after each ACR Done.  Sequence the xmp files by Date Modified.  Is the number of file modified timestamps with the 'now' date and time the same as the number of files you just edited in ACR?
In Bridge, do the just-performed edits appear in the thumbnails?  Look a the ACR values in the metadata for each of the just-edited images.  Do they show the values you just edited?  (Be sure that you have checked on Camera Raw metadata in Bridge preferences.)

  • Canon 1Ds Mark II CR2 files -- Aperture vs. CS2 Raw

    Hi Gang,
I can tell I'm going to be frequent flier here for a while as I experiment with Aperture. This forum is a great resource.
A question for other users of the Canon 1Ds Mark II (or other canon models for that matter). Compared to the CS2 Raw converter, which has been my converter to-date, I'm finding two things:
    1. Lots of noise coming out of Aperture! It takes the form of image-wide color noise, appearing in both subtle color fields and patterned areas. I know this topic has been covered at length here and I'm finding that the noise reduction controls, combined with CS2's noise reduction filter, can solve the problem. However, it is still somewhat distressing -- particularly when it happens on ISO 100 shots.
    2. The second issue is actually advantageous, although I'm not sure why it's happening. My conversions out of Aperture appear much richer and warmer than those coming out of CS2. It's very pleasing, but baffling. In comparison to the CS2 conversions, the Aperture versions seem much more vibrant, as if the color saturation has been bumped up and the contrast deepened. My attempts to replicate this using the CS2 controls have been unsuccessful, even though I'm a pretty sophisticated user of that tool.
I haven't shot film in years, but I can only describe the results out of Aperture as more "film-like". I almost feel as though CS2 has a leveling effect on the RAW data, working too hard to interpret the data to produce even exposure and color values across the image. Aperture seems to leave more of the data intact, producing a result that is closer to how the image was actually lit and shot.
Curious to know whether anyone has had similar results between the two tools.
    Thanks in advance.

On item one, it would be good to revisit your tests after 1.1 has come out - they are supposed to have improved the base RAW conversion for many cameras, and Canon I think in particualr since there have been lots of similar reports about noise.
But the second feature that will make things better even if the raw conversion were no better is the ability to fine-tune conversion parameters per-image. So if something is coming out noisy, you can turn up the noise reduction in conversion as opposed to using the noise reduction tool which can rather soften an image if applied too liberally.
As to the second point, I have seen reports from others there as well (including Rob Galbraith) saying that already colors from Aperture are better than many other converters - there was an article some time ago going into how much time the Aperture team went into making color rendtion as good as it could possibly be, I think to the exclusion of lots of other things. So when other aspects of the RAW conversion like detail, noise and sharpness have improved enough people I think will generally be really happy with the Aperture conversion and opinions will change quickly.
I think it's kind of interesting that until now very few RAW converters have been put to the kind of scrutiny that Aperture has been put through, certainly the first few versions of ACR were not looked at that closley by a wide audience. This will be great in the long run for all tools as improved Aperture conversions could fire off a real push across all the RAW conversion tools for improved quality. Bibble in my mind is the first out of the gate by improving not only the converter but also adding Noise Ninja and some lens correction tools.

  • O.T. New Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III  - 21 megapixel full frame slr

Rumoured body price on Amazon $8000
    http://www.dpreview.com/news/0708/07082009canoneos1dsmarkiii.asp

That was apparently the price Amazon showed before Canon presumably got them to pull the listing - it seems they jumped the gun on publicising the new camera.
U.S. customers shouldn't complain as, on current form, it'll probably be nearer £8000 in the U.K. !

  • Canon Mark III CR file

I tried to open a Canon Mark III .cr2 file but received message that it was not the correct file.
I have the latest update. The camera is shipping. When will we get the update for this camera?

    Here we go again
This question gets asked over and over every time there's a new camera out.
Three to four orderly releases of Adobe Camera Raw per year have been promised. Beyond that, there's no guarantee that your camera will be supported in the very next one.
Pressure Canon to share the necessary information in its entirety and in a timely fashion.
Frankly, I never cease to be amazed at folks who buy a camera without checking whether it is supported by their preferred software or not.
