Open EPS with Illustrator

I've just upgraded my Ai CC - 2014 and in my documents i can no longer right click on an EPS and 'open with' - 'illustrator'
I've tried clicking on 'choose default program' and then finding the illustrator.exe file - but it still won't have it.
Is there a way around this?

If you are using EPS files between Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign you should definitively change your workflow as EPS does not support color management nor transparency.

Open PDF with Illustrator

I have PDF files created in Illustrator; saved as .pdf that until recently I could right click the PDF icon giving me an option "Open With...Illustrator" which would then open the file in Illustrator CS4 and allow me to edit the PDFs.
Now when I right click to open with, Illustrator opens to Welcome Window as if I had just opened the program with the Illustrator icon but does not actually open the PDF.
From within Illustrator I can use the open process to go to the file location and open with no issue.
Something that tells Illustrator to open that file seems to have been lost.
Suggestions? CS4 on Windows 7

In Windows Explorer, navigate to a file of the type you want to associate (GIF, JPEG, etc.).
Click on its icon once to select it.
While holding the shift key down, right click on the icon. (Note: Holding the Shift key down is not necessary in Windows 2000 and Windows XP.)
In the pop-up menu, choose Open With... A box will open asking you to choose a program to open that file type. If you have a lot of software installed it could take a few moments for this box to appear.
Pick a program from the list.
If the program you need isn't in the list, choose [other] to navigate to another EXE file on your hard drive.

Finder wants to open SWFs with Illustrator

My computer seems to think that SWFs (unless I create them personally) should be opened by Illustrator, and I'm tired of having to manually set the "Always open with..." all the time. Is there a permanent fix for this? Thanks for your time.

I managed to discover the answer to this one. I selected the .SWF and opened the Get Info window (File/Get Info). Under "Open with:" I selected Flash 8 instead of Illustraror and then clicked "Change All..." to always open .SWF files with Flash 8. I'm not sure how I got into this mess in the first place, but I'm glad to have discovered the solution.

Can't open EPS with CS6 - sent from someone using CS4

Friend mailed me an .eps file from CS4 and I can't open it on CS6. What's wrong??

Can your friend open the copy from their sent folder in their email application? I ask because it is possible the file was corrupted in the send. If they can open it, how are you opening it? Did you copy the file from the email to your computer instead of trying to open it out of your email app?

Having Trouble Opening .EPS File

I am trying to open a .eps file in Illustrator CS3. As it is trying to open the progress bar for Parsing EPS format appears. Once the bar reaches the end, an error message shows up saying operation cannot complete because of an unknown error. Can anyone please tell me why this is happening? Even tried opening it up in Photoshop and paring error message appeared. I am using a PC on windows Vista. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I received the emailed file in zip. Tried opening it with illustrator and the same problem happened again. Any reason why it may still not be opening up? Do you recommend maybe reinstalling illustrator. This problem never happened before. Thanks

Email servers often corrupt eps files. It's best to have the person zip the file before sending it.

Opening eps files in illustrator cs3, created with GMT

I have been using previous versions of illustrator (10.0, 11.0, 12.0) to edit my eps files created with GMT (Generic Mapping Tools) with no problem.
I have just recently installed CS3. When I open these GMT generated eps files the colors are changed and lines are shifted when compared with the original eps image (which i can open and view in GSview, a postscript viewer, with no problem).
My current work-a-round is to open these eps files with illustrator 11.0 (which I have installed on another computer), save the file as an AI file (version 11.0), and then open this file with illustrator CS3. The file then displays correctly.
My question is this, what has changed with the CS3 version of illustrator that does not allow me to open eps files created with GMT (Generic Mapping Tools). Older versions of Illustrator open these files with no problems.
My OS is windows XP - 64-bit. My older computer running illustrator 11.0 is winXP - 32 bit. I bought the newer Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design Standard because I was having trouble installing the older version of illustrator onto my 64-bit machine.

Can't open EPS files in Illustrator CS3 since installing CS6

I'm on Windows 7, and need to be able to open .eps files with Illustrator CS3. Since installing CS6 yesterday I'm no longer able to associate EPS files with Illustrator CS3. When I right click an eps and go to "open with", only Illustrator CS6 is listed. When I "choose default program", only Illustrator CS6 is listed. If I "browse" and manually select the Illustrator CS3 executable, it still defaults to CS6. Using the same process with .ai files works fine, there is no issue. However these .eps files are not behaving like .ai files. If anyone could suggest a solution to my problem I would be very grateful.
EDIT:
Also, attempting to set the default program through the "set associations" control panel doesn't work, after selecting the Illustator CS3 executable it still shows up as CS6.

Some research solved my issue. Need to create a registry entry for Illustrator CS3 (v13) in the eps file extension section of the windows 7 registry.
1. Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.eps\OpenWit hProgids
2. Create a new "binary value" key called "Adobe.Illustrator.13" (leave the value blank).
That's it. CS3 is now a valid choice for eps files. Hope this helps anyone who has the same issue.

Is it possible to open eps files with Keynote?

I have some eps Clipart files that I have been trying to edit so I can use the individual clipart images instead of having to crop a jpef or tiff copy of the original file.
However, I can't seem to open the eps version of the file in any of the applications I have, which makes the files almost impossible to use...
Is there any way of actually opening the eps files with Keynote, or does anyone know of a program or app that I can open these with?

There are a number of compatibility reasons why Keynote will not open eps files
I use Illustrator to open, then save as a different file any eps files which Keynote wont open directly.

Cannot open eps files on maverick oSX with CS6

I cannot open eps files on maverick oSX with CS6. AI and FW just hang and need to force quit to continue.
I have tried using FW but no success. I can open old files but no new ones (existing on my computer) since upgrading to Maverick on a Macbook air.
The files will open in Photoshop (as raster) and are able to be placed in ID.
No Plugins in AI or FW.
Latest Java update.

If you can't open them, but place them, then the files might have been created with a newer version (like CC) or they might just be (partly) corrupt.
You can try and create a new Illustrator file and place the EPS in it (embedded).

How do i open EPS file with "rasterize generic EPS format" options in photoshop CS?

Hi please can someone help!?
I'm using Photoshop CS on mac- when i open EPS format files i usually get the "rasterize generic EPS format" option so that i can select the size i want the file to be etc without losing quality. However on one file i've opened before i don't seem to be getting that option at all, if i open the EPs file it just goes to a standard size automatically and doesn't give me the chance to change the size. This is the same file that i have used since being sent the file, i've not resaved it. It used to give me the rasterize generic EPS format option but it no longer works. Any ideas how i can make those options appear when opening or how i can rasterize/resize it once open without losing quality?
Just to be clear, i still get the rasterize generic EPS format option when opening other EPS files but it seems not with this one particular file.

Encapsulated PostScript-files can contain either vector-content (in which case one gets prompted when opening with Photoshop), pixel-content (in which case Photoshop opens straight away) or a mixture (same as the first case).
When a file has been rasterized that’s that, You may want to go back to the original file if You can locate it.

Illustrator can't open eps files

I've been have an issue with CS3 and now CS5. When trying to open an eps file I get an error "Can't open illustration. Could not complete the requested operation". I can see a thumbnail, but nothing in the file shows up. Any ideas?

Tranparency gets flattened in the making of the .eps, and there is a choice as to whether you want to embed links.
If you somehitng simple with no transprency, you would be able to make yourself a nice editable .ai file out of this.
Once you have transparency, the those elements get merged and embedded, and often in quite a complex splicing.
You can place the .eps in Illustrator and then embed the .eps to convert the placed into some vector shapes you may need to grab.

Opening EPS files - Photoshop vs. Illustrator

I have many instances during the day when I need to open different types of EPS files - vector-based graphics created in Illustrator and images saved in Photoshop. However, the Finder can't seem to differentiate between the two - it opens an EPS in Illustrator regardless of how it was created.
I know I can change the default launch app in the Get Info window, but is there a way to make the Finder recognize that there's a difference between the two? I've been working on Macs for 15 years, and I don't recall having this problem before...? I'm using the CS3 Suite, if that makes a difference.

on Mac OSX, type and creator are stored in a resource fork, which I'm guessing the clients/stores your getting your eps from don't give you. The finder can't recognize the difference between the 2, however if you open the file in textedit first you will see a line %creator and it will tell you the program the file was created in.
Thats what people use to restore the resource fork. You can use this app
But its missing the extensions in photoshop cs3 so you could rebuild it from the source code, found here
Drop the code in to script editor and then when you are done save it as an app
You will have to find this line in the source

look in text edit at the % creator if you need to change more recent versions of files, of even file types if your more advanced.
Here is the official answer from adobe in bridge, they say it can't be done.
If its a little much for you sorry, its a complex solution.

Opening an eps causes Illustrator CS3 to lock up

I am running Illustrator CS3 on a Mac G4 laptop running 10.4.11.
Today I tried to open an EPS file, of the same time that I've opened before, I Illustrator looks up -- the spinning beach ball. I've tried to open the EPS file from within Illustrator, by dragging it to the Illustrator icon and by control-clicking on the EPS file and using the "open with" command, all with the same results.
I'm assuming I need to trash something in the preferences. Any help would be great.

I haven't updated any software other than playing a little Myth II
I trashed the whole folder inside the general preferences folder.
The files were from different directories and different machines
I did quite before I trashed the preferences.
I think the program, for some reason, has gone South.
I don't want to sidetrack this thread, but I've been using Quark since 1993 and have had maybe one corrupt file that hasn't been able to be rescued. Same with Freehand.
My confidence in Adobe is pretty shaken at this point, but they're sort of like the Microsoft of desktop publishing.
Photoshop seems to be their only real stable app.
