Is there anything to look out for here? What have I done wrong? Did I reformat my drive incorrectly? I chose Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Tried also to fix permissions from the install disk but got the same errors.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hmm I haven't seen so many errors either.
the number of errors is not high at all. Leopard would very often produce at least 3 to 4 times as many.
It could have something to do with me running snow leopard on a Macbook Pro 2.16 core duo and not a core 2 duo... ?
no, that would not have anything to do with it. as i said, those are most likely just errors in the permissions database. as i said, leopard was notorious for those. snow leopard is not as bad but produces a number of them too. I just haven't seen this particular kind of messages before. reinstalling SL will fix them but it seems like a serious overkill in this case.

  • Creating files in user directory results in "Operation not permitted" error

    Hello everyone,
I have a FileVault-secured home directory on my PowerBook G4 running OS X 10.4.6 which gives me some headache, as you can see from the following Terminal session:
    arepty-powerbook:~ arepty$ touch fubar
    touch: fubar: Operation not permitted
I am definitely in the correct directory, logged in as the correct user, have enough free disk space and the directory has the correct permissions, as you can see below:
    arepty-powerbook:~ arepty$ pwd
    /Users/arepty
    arepty-powerbook:~ arepty$ whoami
    arepty
    arepty-powerbook:~ arepty$ id arepty

Am I missing something here or is my FileVault-directory perhaps fubar? Thanks in advance for any help you guys might be able to give me.

    PowerMac G5 & PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

That is good to know, but it will probably make it ever harder to locate the cause of this problem. In the meantime, I made a backup of my FileVault-enabled user directory on my PowerMac and reinstalled the operating system on my PowerBook. During the backup, I have encountered a couple of I/O errors so I'm guessing either the filesystem was damaged (and could not be completely repaired by Disk Utility, which I have tried) or the hard drive is damaged.
Just to be on the safe side, I have ordered a new hard drive and exchanged it (wouldn't want to risk data loss with the old hard drive) and everything works perfectly again with a completely new user directory.
I am still wondering what caused all this trouble though, since I want to avoid another incident like this in the future.

  • Acrobat 8 Form - "This Operation Not Permitted" error when enable user rights and open Reader X

I have a form which is causing me fits.  It was created from an existing PDF form to which I added data fields using LifeCyele Designer.
When I enable user rights to the document and try to open it in either Adobe Reader X or Acrobat 8 Pro I get the message "This operation is not permitted" twice.  Once I get rid of the messages the form works fine.
Is there a way to upload the form to this forum for someone to look at it?
With my limited knowledge, I did try to investigate embeded font issues and hidden object issues.  But after much work I've not gotten much closer to a resolution.
    Best,

You cannot upload the file to the forum, but you can use Acrobat.com or Dropbox if you have an account. If you ha e no other options I'd be happy to take a look: acroscript at gmail dot com

  • [SOLVED] ALSA equal "Operation not permitted"

I need to start a script at startup to run sound through a PCM type EQUAL.
I created the alsaequal package from the AUR repository.
    https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/alsaequal/
I tried to try on a newly installed Arch X86, seems to be a permissions issue when trying to access the pcm from a non-interactive session.
If I run a SSH session and leave it running as a daemon, it works perfectly, but if I try to load from systemd to have it in the boot, there is no way to make it work.
    For example:
    / usr/bin/aplay-D equal /root/piano2.wav
But if it is run from the "units" start as a service, displays an error that does not have permissions to access the pcm.equal.

  • Operations not permitted

    Hi
I have a MacBook Pro with a corrupted copy of Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installed on the HD (I say corrupted because if I try selecting the HD as the startup disk I'm locked at the pretty spinning gear screen). The problem started when I went a little OCD on system files and tried to make everything look pretty but accidentily deleted necessary things... IE... the entire utilities folder and what not... anyway I'm using my factory install disk with Snow Leopard 10.6.3 to run Disk Utility and Verify/Repair the permissions but I keep getting "operations not permitted", errors... I'm semi-comfortable in using the Terminal from my OS disk if anyone knows the commands necessary to fix the permission issues.
Any help is greatly appreciated -- I really don't want to lose my files (Silly me... I never used Time Machine or a external HD to backup anything important) and I'd like to have my Mac running smoothly!
    Thanks so much,
    Timothy

You should not be getting any kind of error message when trying to install, if you're booted from the DVD. I can't comment further on that without knowing what the message is.
As for backing up, you can do that within Disk Utility, but you should have done it long before now. If you don't make regular backups, you'll inevitably lose all your data.

everything was working fine before the upgrade, but after the upgrade, the process fails to start with the error, “Operation not permitted.  An attempt was made to perform an operation limited to processes with appropriate privileges or to the owner of a file or other resources.”

  • Ln -s on a NAS device gives - Operation Not Permitted

    Hi,
I am installing Oracle Database on a NAS mounted drive and the installation fails.
The reason is I am not able to create softlinks on the drive.
    ln -s a b
gives the error : Operation Not permitted.
I use the following mount command to mount the NAS
    mount -t smbfs //machine/share /share username=oracle,password=oracle
    Thanks

mount -t smbfs //machine/share /share username=oracle, password=oracleWhich user has executed this command?
In case it was "root" (I belive that) then only root can create that symlink.

    Hi
Well, it is not advised to do it manually, the logged in user (sidadm)
should have the permissions, the reason being it is required at several points of time and with several folders..
However, for learning purpose, here is the syntax to be given in command line-
chgrp -R groupname <directoryName> (for all subdirectory - recursive)
I gave this jsut to cross verify, please assign the access rights (add to admin group) and then continue installation,
    Revert for queries,
    Cheers

  • Mac OS X 10.6.8, receiving error message "Failed to check for updates. The operation couldn't be completed. Operation not permitted." How to fix?

When I try to update my software, I'm receiving the error message "Failed to check for updates. The operation couldn't be completed. Operation not permitted."
I'm using Safari 4.0.3. Yes, I know this is an old version of Safari - I can't update it, or any other software on my MacBook. Should I just wait for the Lion OS, or is there any kind of fix a non-technical Mac user like me can attempt without screwing up her laptop?
I've tried clearing my cache and resetting Safari already - doesn't help. I've also tried to update after disabling my (Norton) antivirus software, thinking that might be interfering. None of these help.
I don't know if it's a related problem, but also I can't download .pdf files from the internet, although I used to be able to.

You should use the NortonAV uninstaller to uninstall it. Disabling the dreadful thing in the past hasn't always been sufficient for it to cease creating system havoc. The Mac NortonAV version has a long and well-earned reputation for doing truly seriously nasty things to OS X. Shame on Comcast for inflicting NortonAV on its Mac customers. It's not a matter of if NortonAV will mess up OS X but when and how badly. I can't help but wondering if some setting in your Norton AV has decided that NortonAV, rather than you, will be making executive decisions about what you are allowed to install on your computer and is keeping that fact a secret.
After you are done uninstalling Norton use the finder to search for any Norton files that the uninstaller might have missed. Add the option to search for invisible files.
After you have removed all the Norton bits and pieces restart in safe mode by holding down the shift key right after the startup chime. Keep holding down the shift key until you see the Apple logo and spinning gear. Safe mode does some maintenance tasks which means a much longer than normal startup time. Use Disk Utility to repair permission
If your Mac works normally in safe mode restart. If things still aren't fixed you might want to give another shot at reinstalling Snow Leopard from the install DVD and applying the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo before taking your Mac to the Apple Store.
If you feel the need to run AV software on your Mac use ClamXav in manual mode. It's donationware and doesn't seem to cause the litany of weird problems that are associated with other AV software.

  • Operation not permitted - Permission errors when restoring

    Hi Guys,
I'm trying to restore some files from a time machine backup from a DIFFERENT machine (i.e. browse other Time Machines) to a different laptop.
BOth machines run 10.6. When using Time Machine it didn't want to know about it with the graphical restore.
I tried the browsing via Finder and drag/drop onto the new machine's desktop and no joy - error messages.
Finally, I used the command line and the even used sudo, but got this error:
mv: Linwood College//10Bi SS/Global Terrorism/Rainbow warrior comic.comicdoc: Operation not permitted
    The command I used was:
    MacBook:Grad School sam$ sudo mv -f Linwood\ College/ ~/Desktop/
I did enter my password too, which is an Admin account on the machine.
Any suggestions on how I can recover these files? I'd really like to get them off the external hard drive before I give up and wipe it.
    Appreciate all help in advance.

What does that mean? Did you get an error message? If so, what? If not, what happened?
You should be able to restore to an "alternate location," per #16 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
