Open file in imovie

I am making a presentation of pictures timed with music on iMovie. I then finalized/published it and moved it to iDVD. The iMovie file was accidently moved to the trash, but i still have the iDVD file. i recovered the iMovie file from the trash but I cant open it in iMovie anymore. There are some things that I need to change about the presentation, but it wont open in iMovie. Is there any way to open in iMovie file in iMovie if it is not already in the project library?

What version of iMovie are you using?

  • Can Frontrow Open Files in iMovie?

The iMovie is in the "Movies" folder but does not show when I use the remote control. I can open all my slideshows form iPhoto through the remote control.
    Thanks,
    Carlos Marques

    Hi Carlos,
The iMovie file in your Movies folder is actually a package that contains all the elements that make up your iMovie. You can see what I mean if you right click the file and choose 'Show Package Contents'.
To view the iMovie in Front Row you will need to export it as a Quicktime movie. Open the file in iMovie and choose File/Export from the menu bar - a dialog box will open. Select the Quicktime option from the top and decide which compression (quality) you want to use. Click Share, give it a name and make sure it's saved in the Movies folder. Depending on how large the movie is and which compression you choose, it may take quite some time to do the export. Once done, you should be able to view the exported movie in Front Row.
    Hope that helps.

  • Can't open file in Imovie 09

Hello there. I was working with a friend on a video project. She has a newer macbook then I and when she emailed me the file to finish editing I could not open it. When I tried to import it into Imovie it said that 'This file is not comaptible with Imovie." Do I need to upgrade my Imovie? Please help!

you don't 'open' iMovie Projects as 'files'.
iMovie-Projects have to be in the structure, how iMovie handles video:
Projects in the Projects Folder, corresponding Events in the Events Folder.
Just a single file is of no use for sharing Projects...
    Steps to do:
Your friend connects an external harddrive to her Mac (=video files are huge!)
(be sure, the HDD is formatted 'Mac'/hfs!)
that extHDD will appear in the Project Library
    drag the Project onto it
a Warning will ask you "just the project or all corresponding Event Media?"
    … select nummero due ...
connect that drive to your Mac, launch iMovie, in your Project Lib the Project will appear, happy to be processed by you

  • IMovie for Mac: "iMovie cannot open files in the "iMovie for iOS Project" format."

    Frustration
Manufacturer: Apple (a multibillion dollar company)
    The year: 2015
    Hours lost: Three Weeks
Total costs for both devices: $4,000
    Background Details
I just wasted thousands of dollars on these two hardware devices by making the rookie mistake of assuming projects were compatible across iMovie applications. However, the exported .iMovieMobile project files are in an incompatible iMovie for iOS Project format that iMovie for Mac cannot import. So I am stuck with a 15 GB .iMovieMobile project file--for an hour-long+ video--that I created and I was editing on my iPhone for weeks that I can no longer edit on my iPhone due to an error, nor potentially rescue the lost hours on my Mac, the sole reason I purchased it one day ago. The reason I can no longer edit the project on the iPhone is because iMovie for iOS suddenly stopped displaying the video of the project in preview, external display, etc. The clip snapshots remain visible and the audio remains audible, but the video appears fully black. Any attempt to export the video at any resolution generates an error message. (This error applies only to this project; other projects export without issue.) I can save to and from iTunes or iCloud without issue, but import into iMovie for Mac is unavailable for this latest version. Deleting and reinstalling the app does not resolve the issue. Nothing has resolved this issue; so I purchased the Mac as a last attempt, and it appears that I will have to begin the meticulously painful process of recreating the video from scratch with all the titling, sound effects, precise edits, transitions, organization, etc. This video was to surprise my mother for her birthday with "this is your life" footage, including my late father. It may seem like a small first-world problem, but such things carry big emotional impacts. What began as such a wonderfully intuitive and joyful experience has descended into a soul-suffering nightmare of catastrophic proportions. This software grinch stole christmas.
    Likely Suspect
I believe this originated from Apple's confusingly designed iTunes client that removed videos used by iMovie for IOS during a sync, which I successfully restored back to the iPhone. This apparently resulted in iOS seeking and then claiming to find all of the videos, but somehow a bug in the coding causes the audio to play but not display video, and no way to resolve the bug from an enduser standpoint. I was hoping that iMovie for Mac would allow me a workaround, but I'll never know because the iOS and Mac formats are currently and dishearteningly incompatible.
    Suggestions
I never performed a full backup of the iPhone, but I don't believe any of the iCloud nor local backups actually backup iMovie projects themselves anyway. (That's a fail.) So one must back them up manually to iTunes or iCloud.
MANUALLY BACKUP YOUR PROJECTS DAILY, IF NOT HOURLY.
MANUALLY BACKUP YOUR PROJECTS BEFORE IMPORTING OR SYNCING FROM ITUNES.
MANUALLY BACKUP YOUR PROJECTS BEFORE IMPORTING VIDEO CREATED OUTSIDE  OF YOUR IOS DEVICE.
    Resolutions
Hope Apple fixes this problem soon? Perhaps.
Return the Mac to Apple, if they allow? Perhaps.
Someone in this community will provide a magical workaround--that I haven't already attempted? Perhaps.
As unlikely these options may be, I shudder to imagine that I may be forced to suffer no resolution and $3,000+ completely down the drain, because if iMovie for IOS worked as intended, I wouldn't have ever purchased the Mac as a last ditch effort to rescue the project. It meant that much to me to surprise my mother by attempting to retrieve this project file from oblivion--but to no avail.

I appreciate you taking the time to copy and paste boilerplate responses to increase your points in this forum, but I've already read all those support articles in depth; but you have barely read my post at all. Please don't guess a fix. Only someone with the latest versions of iMovie, iOS, iPhone, Yosemite, and MacBook Pro is qualified to troubleshoot this, because anyone would immediately see that the following option no longer exists:
Open iMovie on your Mac, and choose File > Import > iMovie for iOS Project.
Read my post before you reply: It clearly says in the title and within my post that I can neither export nor import through iTunes without receiving an error message. So your response neither solved my question nor helped me whatsoever.

You really should be doing backups with an actual backup application, especially one that will work automatically, and, if your external HD is large enough, back up your entire system.  These can automatically back up only what's changed since the  previous backup, and some will keep "archive" copies of things you've changed or deleted, also.
Too many things can go wrong, such as your internal HD failing, and you'll have a major project to reinstall everything.
You already have Time Machine, built-in to OSX.  You might want to review the Time Machine Tutorial, and perhaps browse Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
#27 in the second link mentions some alternatives, too.

  • How can I open a .mov file with iMovie?

    Hi,
I keep trying to open a .mov file in iMovie and it isn't doing it. Is that not a recognized file extension? Should I convert the video file somehow?
    Thanks!

.mov is just a container for a variety of video codecs, some of which are not recognized by iMovie.  You will need to convert it first with a third party app such as Media Converter (which is free, see:   http://media-converter.sourceforge.net).
Another free app  VideoSpec (see:  http://videospec.free.fr) is useful for identifying all the details of a video clip

  • How do I open a iMovie 2.0 file in iMovie HD? Does it convert?

How do I open a iMovie 2.0 file in iMovie HD? Does it convert?
I have a movie from iMovie vers. 2.0.1. I want to open it on our new Mac Mini which uses iMovie HD 5.0.2.
Please tell me this is doable. Or can I get a copy of iMovie 2.0 to run it on my new Mac? I want to make copies of the movie by burning a dvd. Pls help.

iMovie 2.0.1 ran in Mac OS 9, not Mac OS X. If I recall, it is necessary to boot your Mac into Mac OS 9 to run it. It won't run in Mac OS 9 Classic running inside Mac OS X. Your Mac cannot boot into Mac OS 9, so you probably can't run iMovie 2.0.1.
You probably wouldn't want to anyway, for versions of iMovie that ran in Mac OS 9 used the OS 9 file name structure, which causes problems for projects converted to Mac OS X.
The simplest solution is to simply import the project.mov file that's inside the iMovie 2 project folder to a new iMovie HD project. (Don't import the iMovie 2 project file, import its .mov file.) Because of the name problem, it's possible this won't work either, but it probably will.
That will deliver the entire iMovie 2 project as a single clip to the iMovie HD project. The clips you had in iMovie 2 won't be editable, but everything will be there and play in the proper order.

  • Opening iMovie 08 file in iMovie 09

How do I go about opening a file from iMovie 08 in iMovie 09? I did it a long time ago but did not get an iMovie 09 icon of the file. Instead, I got a file folder and for a time, when I started up iMovie 09, it would open the file? or folder? but not save it as I expect. Now iMovie 09 has stopped opening the file? folder? all together. I just want to open my 08 movie in 09. Any help would be appreciated.

You can do this by using the File menu. FILE/IMPORT/FROM iMOVIE HD.
You should be aware that the DV source clips will be imported into an Event. Any clips that you have placed in a timeline will be placed in a Project. Transitions, effects, titles, music, etc will not be imported.

  • Opening iMovie 6 files in iMovie 8

I have 4 files I created in iMovie 6, and all I need to do is export as is- no editing or anything. I thought I'd open them in iMovie 8 as a way to start to use the new program. But It won't open them. I've tried "Import Movies" but the import button stays grayed out.

What compression format are they in? iMovie '08 will only import files it can edit.

  • Can't open Sony HDR-SR8e movie files with iMovie 08

Has anyone had any success importing movies shot in HD on the Sony SR8e and then importing them into iMovie 08? I can see the files there, but they are all greyed out as if they are not compatible. I've imported them on a seperate PC running windows successfully, transfered the files onto memory stick and put them onto my Mac desktop, however iMovie rejects them if you try and drag them in.
Everythings upto date, can anyone help?
    Thanks, Neil

I'd still like to know how to import the files individually as I have loads of existing footage that isn't on the actual camera any more.
MPEG1 files are playback only compatible with QT. Attempting to add/import such files to iMovie, FCE, or FCP applications would normally automatically convert the video to DV compression and lose the audio content. However, iMovie '08 appears to avoid this problem by refusing to drag 'n drop or import such files in the first place. The normal procedure here would be to open your files in an MPEG based third-party application like MPEG Streamclip (free) and convert the files directly to the DV compression format (keeping the audio) which can then be edited in iMovie, FCE, or FCP.

  • How do you open a finalized imovie file?

How do you open a finalized imovie file?

Correct. But I figured it out. I moved the file to my desktop after I finalized the project and it wouldn't open in imovie or QT. I moved the file back to the folder it saved to and I was able to open it in my Project folder. Whew. THX for responding

  • Imovie will not open files

I have old analog video that I converted to DVD 10 years ago now I went to import some of these into i Movie. I movie would not open them so I downloaded Handbrake to convert the files to MP4 format, but i movie still will not open. Any options? Thanks KLS80

What's the format of your analog video?
Although iMovie supports .MP4 video format, not all mp4 video can be imported into iMovie. If Handbrake can't help you convert the files to iMovie video, you could get another conversion software, like total video converter for Mac. Btw, it's a free to try application, 30-day free trial. With it, you are able to convert any popular video files to iMovie supported video formats on Mac OS X.
