Open File in Reader or Acrobat

I have Acrobat 8 and Reader X installed on my PC (Vista Business). After installing updates for both programs over the past few months I have lost the default toolbar on documents I download from the web and need to use F8 to get a toolbar. In addition, last week I had an "accessibility" screen pop up when I opened a document and took me through a number of set-up screens so that my documents no longer open up the same size and also appear fuzzy until I manually enlarge them, and finally, I notice that my documents always open with "Acrobat Standard" rather than Reader. So now I'm wondering if Acrobat and Reader conflict with each other. If I have Acrobat do I really need Reader? Is there a way to force Reader to open the document instead of Acrobat? If I get rid of Reader will this fix all the issues I have (no toolbar, fuzzy looking docs)? I don't know who makes the decisions to "update" but everything WAS working fine until the updates.

You can create files that don't work properly in other readers (as you have), but you cannot take any action to control which app the user selects (or get) to open a file.
Worse, many people do not understand when they are opening a file outside Adobe Reader, as constant posts here prove; they do not realise that Chrome or FireFox don't use Adobe Reader.

  • Can't open files with Reader 9.0

I just upgraded to Acrobat Professional, so I also upgraded to Reader 9.0. When I try to open a file on our Intranet, I get the message, "The Adobe Acrobat/reader that is running can not be used to view PDF files in a Web Browser. Adobe Acrobat/Reader version 8 or 9 is required. Please exit and Try again." Everything worked fine with Reader 8. There is no other version of Reader or Acrobat on this machine except version 9. I am using Windows XP SP2.

Every time I click on a link while in browser IE 7.0 that calls to open a pdf I am receiving this error. I am running Win XP Pro w/SP2.
This is the verision I am running over Adobe Reader, verison 9.1.2:
I do not have Pro installed. When I look at "Add or Remove Programs" I have: Adobe AIR, Adobe Download Manager, Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX, Adobe Reader 9.1.2, and Spelling Dictionaries Support for Adobe Reader 9.
I have tired to do the "Repair Adobe Reader Installation" and it runs through the process and appears to go through ok.  But I am still having the problem when I get on the web and click on a pdf. I have restarted my computer after the installation as well to see if that would help (incase files needed to finish installation) and I am still getting the same problem.
What does work...I am able to save the link by "Save Target As" to my computer and are able to view the files and additional all other PDF files physically on my computer will open fine in Reader 9.1.2, just not files located on the web.
Is this a common issue going around or local. I did not have this problem with v.8 prior to this upgrade.
Thank you for any assistance you can give.

  • Cannot Open File In Reader 9 After Using CutePDF Writer

After using CutePDF Writer to output a file from the print screen of Adobe Reader 9.0, I am unable to open it.  I get the error "Adobe Reader could not open 'filename.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged."
The file shows a Reader icon, but when I view it under Properties, it shows the file size as 0 kb.  Something went wrong on export...
The file was created using Acrobat Pro 9.0.

You either used Cute or you used Acrobat. Which one?
If Cute was involved and the file shows 0kb, then it's a CutePDF issue. You'll want to talk to their people about it.

  • Can't get OPP service started after OATM due to can't open file for reading

This is my second run on the OATM upgrade. OPP (and thus XML reports) came up fine after the 2nd run. After this run, had some issues with enqueing and solved them in an S/R with Oracle, but now I can't start OPP. I have tried all sorts of things, like aborting it in OATM, restarting, shutting down instance, running cmclean twice, resubmitting request, etc. Here is the error I get:
As System Administrator in forms, go to:
    Concurrent -> Manager -> Administer
-> pick Output Post Processor (from the many manager in the list)
-> by the way it says "Activating" under status, seems stuck there.
-> then hit the Processes button
-> it will show a long list of "Terminated" and default to the first
    one at the top.
-> Hit the "Manager Log" button
    -> you now get
    "APP-FND-01632: Cannot open file
    /sechi/applcsf/log/SECHI_orav880d/FNDOPP1380237.txt for reading
Cause: [Routine] encountered an error when attempting to open file
    sechi/applcsf/log/SECHI_orav880d/FNDOPP1380237.txt for reading
Action: Verify that the filename is correct, the environment variables
controlling that filename are correct, and the file exists.
Action: Verify that protections on that file permit reading by this
    program
    - but what is wierd is that the permissions on this dir are 777. I can see old OPP logs in that directory from before OATM. I can manually create a file with the name it complains about , then the app opens up the blank file with nothing in it. It seems that file is not getting created, not that it can't be opened.
If I need to change the log level of OPP please also tell me how to do that if it would provide some clues.
    THanks Marvin

One more thing I am going to try first....
I am going to change the service ID of the OPP manager. It keeps trying
to restart the dead process maybe that it is..

  • Why can't I open files with Reader X??

I received an auto update request about one week ago from ADOBE.  I had 9.4 (I think) at the time and the request took to me to Reader X 10.1.1.
Since then, I cannot seem to open PDF files stored in my document library, nor attach any files to emails. When I click one.....nothing happens.  They files are all solid white rather than showing the red/white coloration of Adobe - like they used to before the "upgade". The only way I can open a PDF is to launch the Reader X software and click "open files" from there.  Obviously, this doesn't help me since I need to email PDFs to clients, and printing 'n faxing isn't an option.
Here's what I've done before so as to avoid repetitive suggestions:
    1.  Uninstalled and reinstalled (more than 1/2 dozen time).  I restarted the PC in between both fuctions. Didn't work.
    2.  Tried to fall back to 9.4 after uninstalling.  Didn't work.
3,  System restore.  Done for (3) different dates proceeeding the update to 10.1.  Didn't work.
    SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!!!!
    Thanks in advance.....

You don't need Adobe Reader to email PDFs to clients.

  • Open file for reading and allow access by others

How can I open a file for reading and still allow others to access (read and write) the file?  I plan to keep this file open for the duration of my program and close it at the end.  However while my program is running another program will need access to the file so it can write to it.  I may be wrong, but I dont think that setting the appropriate permission will solve the problem...  Thank you for your time.

    hi jmcbee,
I think as long as "readers" open a file as "ReadOnly", then the OS (at least Windows) will allow another process to open and write to the same file without a problem.  It's been a while since I've done this - maybe 7 years - and I may have opened the "writer" first, though doubt it makes a difference.
    Have you tried?
    Cheers!

  • How do I disable preparation for read out laid when I open files on the Mac Acrobat Pro DC

I seem to remember this was a real problem in Windows? for earlier versions as I would sit and wait for Acrobat to do this meaningless chore as I never have files read to me.  But there was a software switch somewhere in the prefs.  I really can no longer find that switch.  Anyone know where it is or maybe this should be a requested feature?  Thanks

  • Can't open files in reader

    Hi,
I'm using reader to download files for a grant application. The application says to download the most recent version of reader to proceed which I did but I still can't download or even see the files. Help! My deadline is approaching fast.

Google Chrome uses its own PDF viewer, not the Adobe Reader plugin.
You need to either use a browser with the Reader plugin (Internet Explorer), or configure Chrome to use the Reader plugin: http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/pdf-browser-plugin-configuration.html

  • LaTeX cannot open files using reader 9

For some reason LaTeX and adobe reader 9 don't get along.
Normally, I code my document in Latex, hit compile, and it makes the pdf and has reader open the document for viewing.
However, after updating to reader 9.3 I started getting error messages saying the document could not be opened every time a document compiled.  The documents still compiled, and I could still go and open the document in reader manually, but for whatever reason reader and Latex could no longer communicate.
I solved this problem by rolling back to adobe reader 8.11.  The problem persisted in reader 9.2, 9.1 and 9.0.

What browser are you using? Are you positive that they are PDF files? If so, do you have a link we can look at?
Typicaly, if they really are PDF fies, that's the only option you get when you use fie>save as. If they're just web pages, you get the options that you mention.

  • Office 2013 opens file in read only mode

I have a client on Windows 8.1 Pro using Office 2013. When he access an office file from a network drive it opens in read only. When he saves the file to his desktop using save as it lets him open the file again in compatibility mode but he is unable to
then overwrite the file on the network folder. It keeps giving him a permission error. I have deleted his profile, changed settings in office trust center settings and checked folder permisisons. I am out of ideas. Can anyone help me out here.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    Thanks for the reply.
From the user, "Every file that I open, opens in read-only mode.  It appears that the security is set correctly and I have not changed anything, but, it does not allow it.  I have tried rebooting - not solved.  I tried disconnecting the shared drive and reconnecting - not solved.  However, when I do disconnect the mapped drive, I get a warning saying I have files open.  The problem occurs whether I access the files from the mapped drive or directly by drilling down through the folder structure."
When I try to move files over to the drive it says I do not have required permissions to overwrite or move a file. On a different computer he has full access but not on this one. Also the settings in trust center settings for file blocking and trusted locations
    also privacy.

I know it's a very old issue and I reached to this page looking for a solution. Finally, I have found a fix to this problem.
The problem is that we create an instance of Word and do not close it correctly. This makes program believe that the file is already open and hence you're getting the respective message of file being locked by you.
Set the visibility of your application to true and then when you close it both file and instance should close and you will not get the problem again.

If the newly opened file is a PDF, you should use a "Go to page view" type
