OPEN FIRM WARE SCREEN, ENTER MAC-BOOT COMMAND, GETS WEIRD SCREEN, ......

HELP- HELP- HELP-..."OPEN FIRMWARE/WON'T START-UP".....( IT WAS RUNNING, BUT DIED LIKE THE CORD WAS CUT )....G3 B&W 400MHZ OS 9.2.2, BATTERY GOOD, STARTS UP TO "OPEN FIRMWARE" SCREEN, ENTER "MAC-BOOT" COMMAND, GOES TO A BLUE-ISH/PURPLE TOP 1/2, YELLOW BOTTOM 1/2 SCREEN W/SMALL-ISH (APPROX. 2") MAC FACE THAT THEN GETS ABOUT 5 FOLDERS (STACKED FRT. TO BACK) COVERING MOST OF THE MAC FACE, WON'T GO BEYOND THIS WEIRD SCREEN, HAVE FOUND IMAC OPEN FIRMWARE COMMANDS I'M GOING TO TRY BUT DOUBT WILL WORK BEING THEIR FOR AN IMAC, I HAVE ALREADY DONE A TAP DANCE ON THE KEYBOARD HOPING TO STUMBLE ON TO AN UNKNOWN MYSTERY FIX COMMAND, ALSO DONE PRAM, CUDA, PROGRAMMER RESETS IN ORDER / OUT OF ORDER...AND SPOKE TO LOCAL MAC EXPERT REPAIRMAN, SAID HE'S NEVER SEEN SUCH A SCREEN...ANY IDEAS ANYONE ????..THANKS.. I WONDER IF IT'S BEYOND FIXING, IT'S NOT MY PRIMARY MACHINE & IT WAS NEAR FREE, BUT I HATE TO BE DEFEATED & TOSS IT TO RECYCLING. ....THANKS AGAIN...I'M AN EX-PORSCHE MECHANIC AND HAVE BEEN SELF TEACHING MYSELF ABOUT JUST OPERATING A MAC FOR 4 YRS., SO I'M NOT ALL THAT SHARP IN THE GEEK AREA......WAYNE146

Sorry about the "CAPS", old eyes & tired brain, + in hunt & peck typing method I forget to cap at start of new sentence.....I don't have camera capability at this time. I re-read my discription of the screen and it is worded very accurately, as I close my eye's and imagine the words I see this weird screen as described. When this first occured I tried booting from cd (holding c key down) 5+ minutes and nothing (x5). I pulled the battery a week ago to clear cache, also disconnected power sup. from mother board, hoping for a magical self healing effect from complete discharge of residual currents in board or cache. I'm going to try bring life back to it today. and try the Imac boot commands just for fun (?). I may have lacked the patience needed when doing CUDA, programmers resets, so I will approach with a more zen like mind set this time. Do you think I should re-type my original question in lower case, to get more responces ??....Thank you, All, And Thank you, Allen Jones, for the first responce.

Why does my Mac boot with a Grey screen and a globe?

Usually means you don't have a bootable system installed so the OS is looking for a bootable system on the network.
Does the computer eventually start up shortly after the globe appears? If so then open Startup Disk preferences, select your boot volume and click on the Restart button. If this is not the case then you need to reinstall Snow Leopard.
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

    Hello nosaint1961,
It sounds like you are unable to successfully boot your computer to your desktop. I would use the troubleshooting from the following article to help troubleshoot what is happening named:
Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1367
If your computer won't turn on, try each of these steps:
Verify you have a good connection from your Mac to the wall outlet by confirming the power cord and adapter if present are securely connected and plugged in. To check if the wall outlet is working, plug in a lamp or other electrical device.
If the wall outlet is working and you continue to have no power try another power cord or adapter if available. If it works you may need a replacement cord or adapter.
Note: See Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters for further troubleshooting with MagSafe adapters.
Disconnect all accessories that are plugged in to the computer, such as a printer, hub, or other mobile device.
If your Mac supports user-installable memory, solid state drive, or hard drive, and you recently installed any of these, make sure they are installed correctly and are compatible with your computer. If possible, reinstall the original memory or drive into the computer to find out if the behavior persists afterwards.

  • Macbook Pro won't boot and getting gray screen, help!

I have a Macbook Pro 15" from mid2011. The warranty just expired one week ago.
I was normally using it without any problem, when suddenly the screen started to freeze and get some horizontal line. I had to force shut down with the power button couple times. The next day, my MBP wasn't booting during the startup.
When I turn on, I can hear the chime, the Apple logo show up and the little wheel turns, but after those things the screen remaing gray without any thing happens.
I have tried some steps that I found on discussion, forums, and websites like:
    - PRAM
    - cmd-s (to verify and clean the HD)
    - hold option and restore using a flash drive with Mountain Lion (after I choose the drive, I get a "blue" screen)
    - Remove the RAM and put back
    All those things weren't successful.
What do you guys think I should do now?
What are the main causes of gray screen or blue screen?
Should I replace my RAM or HD?
I'm avoiding to take to a technichian or a geek, because I have a lot of confidential work inside. Luckly, I have a backup of everything.
    I appreciate every reply made.
    Thanks!!

    Hi Eric,
    Thanks for your fast reply.
Yes, I've tried cmd-R. I get a "blue screen" with vertical lines. Pretty weird.
I'm unable to access the Disk Utility.
Do you think the HD is damaged?

  • Boot camp gets black screen when open games

    Hi apple support.
I recently installed windows 7 ultimate 64 bit on my MBP (using boot camp) and i also downloaded all the drivers from the boot camp assistant.
After the installation i run in to these problems. Everytime im trying to play games (even the standard chess games in windows 7 ultimate), the screen goes totally black, but there is still light on the keyboard and the computer is still running. Then i need to shut down the computer and start it again.
    MBP specs:
    2,8 GHz intel core i7
    4GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 288 MB (nvidia geforce gt330m)
    Software: OS X 10.8.2
I really tried everything, like downloading drivers for my graphic-card, updated newest updates from Windows Update.
    HELP

I too have had this issue occur on one of my MBPs (early 2009 15" 2.4 A1286).
I would launch steam in windows bootcamp environment and temps would go to mid/upper 60s.  Playing simple game such as AOE III (circa 2006 game) and after 10 minutes of gaming the screen goes black.  Game sound is still on with the screen black.  Requires hard reboot.  I installed Lubbos Fan Control to occaisionally monitor temps while in game (using windowed game mode or via alt+tab to see the temps).  Temps would be at mid to upper 80s.  So I reasoned that it was a thermal efficiency issue.
The laptop is about 4 years old so I bought replacement fans incase they were struggling to spin/cool efficiently.  I also did an SMC reset since some of the thermal charateristics of the Mac are controlled by SMC.  Ordered new thermal grease too.
Since installing the new fans, SMC reset, applying the thermal grease to the GPUs and to the CPU... temps in OS X at idle are low to mid 40s (30s at startup in OS X).  Temps in windows bootcamp environment are at  about 62c at startup but settle to mid/high 40s at after a few minutes at idle (startup in windows has alot of services restarting, etc which accounts for the 60s temps at startup).  SImple IE browsing is at low 50s (currently at 52c as I type this).
Now when I launch Steam, the temps while in windows climb to 60s.  When in AOE III, temps can still climb to mid/uper 70s but never over 80c.  I haven't had the black screen appear again, but I'll continue to test and monitor to be certain it doesn't return.  One thing is certain, the temps are alot better now.
Macs running windows via bootcamp just simply run hotter than in OS X when doing similar things (Just launching steam in wondows, without running a game causes a 10c increase), but you can do a few things as noted above to try to keep the temps down.
    Hope that helps.
    Ben

  • Start up issues and open firm ware.

Ok, so heres the deal. I have a Gigabit G4 with dual 500 processors. I had a bad motherboard and replaced it. But getting the machine up and running again has proven challenging.
Here are the problems I am having.
    1. The power button on the front stays on all the time, whether the computer is running or not. It will go off if I unplug it, and it does not appear to function as the power button any more. The only way to power on is to plug in the machine.
    2. At start up, there is about a 3 second tone that sounds before the usual mac chime. This tone is only heard once per start up but at every start up. According to Apple and their 'beep' chart that means bad ram. I have checked the ram with another machine and all is good. Also once booted the system profiler can read all the ram just fine and it passes third party ram tests.
    3. After the classic Mac chime I go straight to Open Firmware. Every time. I have pressed the PMU. I have reset the nvram in open firmware, I have zapped the pram. And still I start in Open Firmware every time.
Help please, this is driving me insane. I want my reliable Mac back.
As for an OS on the machine, it currently has a triple boot of Mac OS X Server 10.1, OS X Server 10.4, and Mac OS X 10.4 client.
    Thank you in advance,
    tom
I removed all components except for original equipment.

    Bump
There has to be someone on this forum that has solved this. Or at least have some Ideas that I have not thought of yet.
    Anyone??

  • Why my mac boots showing user selection screen?

My mac freezed on the user selection screen las time I started it so I reseted it by holding the power on button on the back of the imac.
Now when I boot it it just shows the user selection screen and freezes there. Mouse and keyboard don't respond. If I reset it or jnplug it I still have the same thing ocurrimg.
What can I do to solve it?

Try using a USB keyboard and mouse and see if they work. I'm assuming that you have the bluetooth wireless setup? If a wired keyboard and mouse work then you either should replace the batteries in both or have your Mac taken in because something is going on with the bluetooth

  • Why does my mac boot into a black screen followed by a bad sound?

If I start my iMac my Display doesn't work and after some time there is a bad sound.
When I press cmd+alt+P+R and boot my Mac everything is alright.
My brother tried to install Ubuntu on the iMac.("without rEFIt")!
    What can I do?

What does the sound sound like? Is it three beeps? Does it sound like a small "bip" noise only when you immediately press the power?

  • Cannot boot.  Get Grey Screen

I cannot turn on my mac book anymore. I get the grey screen and nothing comes up. I do not get an apple, pinwheel, or any error icons. The fan gets very loud also like it would during a system update. I'm on 10.5 is there anyway to repair this?

Disk Warrior and Tech Tool Pro are good tools to have for maintenance and emergencies like this one. Disk Warrior specializes in this type of "disk directory" error. Tech Tool Pro is more general purpose, but can fix often this type of error.
If you know someone with a Mac that has Firewire, you could start up your Mac in FireWire Target Disk Mode. It becomes an external FireWire drive, and you can then connect it to another Mac with a FireWire cable. The drive will often mount even if there is a problem with booting from it. If so, you can copy off your valuable data, reformat your internal drive, and reinstall the OS and apps. Then, you can restore your data.

  • After installing IOS8.02 my ipad air will not boot up. get white screen and apple logo and then a blue screen. over and over again.

    Hi ..
    Reset the device:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, restore the iPad >  Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes

  • Got Black "You must Restart" screen, won't boot after. only restart screen!

I was browsing craigslist when i got the slow creeping down "You must restart blah blah blah screen..."
After obliging the machine's wish and restarting, it started to boot as normal. After an unusually long boot cycle, i got the same Restart screen. I removed the battery and reset power management because of a post that I found with a similar problem. After that, it goes through the boot system and then just shuts down.
It just continually does the same thing. I believe i left my install discs at work, so am working without them.
I logged in to single user mode and ran fsck -fy , and found it to come back with this result:
    ** /dev/rdisk0s2
    ** Root file system
** Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    ** Checking Extents Overflow file.
    ** Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid sibling link

    ** Volume check failed.
/dev/rdisk0s2 (hfs) EDITED WITH SIGNAL 8

anyone know what the **** is going on??
I can't run diskutil in single user and verbose shuts down when trying to boot.

Not bickering at all. Are all discussions "bickering"?
Topher, let me get this straight. How does one determine something is wrong? DU? DW? Other Utilities? What if, after an A&I, these Utilities show nothing wrong? Still recommend an Erase and Install?
This is like the "permissions" debates of yesteryear. My analogy was and is the same. I keep an elephant stone in my house. It wards off elephants. Not one elephant since I bought that stone.
A lot of people around here seem to have this type of thinking as regards someone else's data, time, and effort. It's not that complicated.

  • My iPod touch screen doesn't shut off. The auto lock is set for two mintues, and everything else is working fine. I've noticed it only fails to shut off when in the music screen. How do I get the screen to shut off without using the lock button?

Please help. This is really annoying and it runs my battery down. My auto lock is set to two minutes. I've checked several times. Thanks.
