Open Firmware startup keys not responding

Hi there,
My Command-Option-O-F combination at powerup is not responding to get me into the Open Firmware.
Any thoughts?
Cheers,
Aaron

Intel Macs do not support Open Firmware rather they use the EFI - extended firmware interface. You can start up in safe mode, single-user mode, or verbose mode. See the following:

  • Safari do not open and ends up not responding

    Hi,
Safari no longer works for me after a software update. Safari will not open and ends up not responding upon launch at which time I have to force quit.
I have gone through the Mac help forums without finding a suitable answer and I tried the following actions but unfortunately not one is working.
    -I have tried to uninstall and install safari again (to uninstall the program I have deleted also all the cookies in preferences and library and application support);
-I have created a new user and safari does not work for the new user either.
It seems to me that the mac feels that a safari window is open but I cannot see it.
Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

A few things you can try (I see you have tried some of them already):
If your Safari won't open, one or more of the following procedures should fix it:
    1. Go to Home/Library/Safari/ folder and remove the following two files:
    ¥ history.plist
    ¥ lastsession.plist
(Safari may not load properly If these two files are corrupted.)
    2. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari/ and remove the contents of that folder.
(These are just webhistory files and are not required for Safari to run. However, similar to preference files, problems can arise if they have become corrupt.)
    3. Locate the cookies.plist file that's located in the Home/Library/Cookies/ folder and remove it.
(Again, faults in stored cookies may interfere with Safari's launch.)
    4. Check whether any of your third-party internet plug-ins may be interfering with the launch of Safari by carefully moving them to the desktop (do NOT delete them at this stage). You can find these in two places:
Home/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ folder, and Global plug-ins are located in the Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins/ folder.
Also look in Library/Input Managers where other third party add-ons may lurk. If you find a SIMBL folder, please note that some SIMBLE.bundles may require updating or possibly removal.
Restart Safari and place them back in the correct folders, one at a time, closing and re-opening Safari each time. If you discover that one of them was causing the problem with launching Safari, trash it and download and install a fresh copy.
If Safari is getting very slow:
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security:
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network: please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/bestpractices/#yournetwork and follow the advice given.
You could also try these codes as well: 4.2.2.1 & 4.2.2.2
If you use a Router, make sure it has the latest firmware installed.
One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x
    This is described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type
    killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page.
Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The latest versions of Flash 10.1 appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.

I opened my activity monitor to check on a current process then noticed in red, Policy Key Not Responding. It had 4 hangs as well. I have repaired disk permissions and that is about it. • Open firmware commands do not work on Mac mini

Open firmware commands do not work on Mac mini. At least on Mac mini 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo (2 GB RAM and 80 GB HD) with Mac OS X 10.4.8.
    Holding:
    Option Command OF
    when restarting does nothing!
    Option: alt key.
    Command: Apple key ().
Is this a flaw or am I missing something?
    Thanks.

Since there is no Open Firmware, there's no reason to reset the Open Firmware defaults. I would assume that since there's no current interface to reset the EFI defaults, this operation is not necessary. I can't say that for certain. But, just like "zapping the PRAM", which used to help when troubleshooting issues with Mac OS 9, doing it in Mac OS X doesn't change or affect as many settings so it's really not necessary.

I just updated itunes to 11.1.3 on my laptop and now it won't open. It does not respond to trying "safe mode" either. Anyone have an idea as to what to do?

I just uninstalled it and am waiting for it to reinstall. I sincerely hope that I have not lost everything that I worked on so hard. Now that mobile me is gone, I have not been able to go between devices to transfer things. I was merely trying to take a document I had worked on and open it in pages, but it said my version was too old. When I updated, it wouldn't load. Now I cannot do anything. I hope that the reinstall fixes it without losing everything. Please advise!!! Yes, I am in panic mode.

  • My mail won't open and keeps on "not responding"

My mail won't open and keeps on "not responding"

    Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail.  Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

  • Open firmware startup disk by default

I have an iMac which by default always goes to the open firmware startup disk screen. How do I get rid of this? I have tried zapping the PRAM, reinstalling the OS and a different hard drive. There are no problems w/ the functionality of the computer or the software and there are no symptoms to say that there is anything wrong w/ the computer. Just want to get rid of having to hit enter at the firmware startup disk screen every time I turn it on. Any suggestions please.

Mark, it appears that the defauly startup mode has been changed on your Mac.
Probably the easiest way to get back to normal is using a utility. I use the free utility OnyX. In OnyX go to Parameters>Login and at the bottom of the pane you can change your Mac's default startup mode.

I just updated iTunes to 11.3 and now every time I go to open iTunes its saying that iTunes is not responding and closes. I do not know what to do or how to fix this problem at all. please someone help!

    Hello elizabethfromvineland
Check out the article below to troubleshoot the issue of iTunes crashing on you upon startup. Start with seeing if you can start up in Safe Mode. If you are still having issues, try to open in Tunes in another user on your computer to see if the behavior still exists. One of the last troubleshooting steps is to remove iTunes; there is a link in the article that will assist you to sort you out.

  • F keys not responding

I'm running tiger still but my F1 thru F11 keys do not respond does anyone have a idea how to fix this?

Do they work if you hold fn and hit them ?
If so open System Preferences/Keyboard & Mouse, click the Keyboard Tab and uncheck "Use all F1, F2 etc, keys as standard function keys"

  • Thinkpad S440 Keys not responding

    Hello Community!
I have a Thinkpad S440  from 09/13 and in the last few weeks the p-key as well as the o, the 0 and sometimes ü,ö,ä (German keyboard) are not responding.
They don't react to keypresses, however, after pressing them a few times they become responsive and do so every press of the key, unless I leave them alone for a while, then they become unresponsive again.
It's not dust or dirt, I've been using pressured air to clean it it changed nothing.
Now I've been told that this might be a problem with the fixation of the keyboard, the way it stops and starts certainly points to this.
Now, do I have to send it in?
I know how to open the thing and I have professionals around who might do it but I'm afraid of voiding the warranty.
    What shall I do?
    Thanks for reading!

I opened the backcover and had a look.
However to look at the keyboard you'd have to remove basically every component of the interior and neither me nor anyone I know dares to do that.
I tightened every lose screw I could find, one screw at the battery showed clear signs of unprofessional usage too.
This seems to have made the problem A BIT better, the keys work more often but not well at all so it's definitely a problem with a connector.
I think I can't but use the warranty.
I don't feel too well with sending my laptop with a lot of sensitive data but I think I'll have to.

  • F12 key not responding

I don't know for what reason my MBP's F12 key is not responding, making it impossible to show the dashboard just by pressing F12. Well, to be precise, there is indeed a little response: there is a dull sound signifying you just did something wrong when I pressed F12. Anybody got a clue?

No, it's not assigned to anything else.
I'm guessing you've done this already, but just to make sure, open Sys Prefs, Keyboard, and check the box for "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys."
Then go to Keyboard Shortcuts, Dashboard&Dock, and check the box for "Dashboard . . . F12."
Close Sys Prefs and see if it works.
If that doesn't work, log in to another account and see if it works the way you want it to in that account. If so, it's a software issue, probably a corrupt preference file in your main account. If not, it may be a hardware issue.

A variety of issues can cause PPRO to crash on launch. Here are some of them:
a problem with the Preferences, or some other pref-related file in the Profile-<USERNAME> bin.
    the graphics driver
having an integrated graphics chip as well as a graphics card. Disabling the integrated chip often fixes this.
having Nvidia CUDA drivers installed on a system with an AMD card
    third-party plug-ins
a problem with the cache files.
a problem with the project file (if you're loading a project...)
folders that Premiere writes to being set to read-only
the user not having administrator rights
a conflict/incompatibility with some OS setting
a problem on the licensing/authentication side.
The fact that you've done a fresh installation of 10.10 eliminates some of those possibilities.
After a crash on launch, does a dialog box eventually come up prompting you to submit a crash report to either Adobe or Apple? If so, please click "information" or the like to access the crash log and copy/paste the report here.

  • After searching in Google, resulting links will not open, get a 'Firefox not responding' message. What is the solution? Ray Allum

After doing a Google search for web sites, the reultant links will not open, a 'Firefox not responding' shows in the URL bar.

I had the same problem and my solution was to disable the PDF extension that came with Firefox 4 which belongs to another company. I found out that it wast interfering with ReaderX. I unabled it and restarted Firefox. I have had no problems since then. Go to Tools, Add-On and click on Extensions and disable the PDF extension. I hope this helps
