Open Folders in Add Bookmark Dropdown

Is there anyway to close the open folders that appear in the Add Bookmark dropdown? I have many folders and subfolders and with them all open when I try to add a bookmark it makes it really hard to find a specific folder. Or is the workaround to just us "Show All Bookmarks" and drag and drop your bookmarks?

Greetings,
If you want to add a bookmark, you should get a dialog box dropping down that let's you select where to save it. But if you don't get that, you can always just save the bookmark to the bookmarks menu, then Show All Bookmarks and move it from there to wherever you like.

  • Opening folders in the bookmarks bar

Is it possible to make folders in the bookmarks bar to open "like other menus" i.e. when you move your mouse to the next folder the old one closes and the new one opens. Now I have to click the new menufolder twice. The first click closes the old one and the second opens the new one.

I am running 10.6.7 and Safari 5.0.5 on a MBP silver keys) and I am not able to get Safari to save bookmarks to the bar. I have tried a few times now but whenever I quit and reopen Safari the bookmark bar resets to the default. GRRRR

  • "Add bookmark" disabled in ibook author?

I can't seem to add a bookmark in ibook author. I have followed all the instructions: highlighted the text and then opened inspector, but add bookmark feature remains disabled (grey) here and on the main menu. Should be very straightforward and I have managed everything else. Am I doing something wrong?

I have tried bookmarking an item further down a chapter that is apart the main text flow, but I hyperlinked it back to text in a text box towards the beginning of the chapter and it worked, however when I try to bookmark something in the text box, it doesn't work. This seems a bit contradictory to what this discussion is saying.
Are you sure you cannot link anything outside of the main text flow given this exception I found?

  • Some folders in a bookmark will not open

Some secondary folders in my bookmarks menu will not open. This just started. I have 24 primary (subject) folders in my bookmarks menu. Five of them have secondary folders.
Using the bookmarks dropdown menu -- of the five, I can not open secondary folders located in four of the primary folders. In all cases, at least one secondary folder will open, the majority will not. One primary folder works and all secondary folders will open.
When I click on "Show all bookmarks", all the secondary files contain the webpages I bookmarked. I can access them by this method, but it is much more time consuming.
Can you help me fix this?
    Thank you.

    Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.

  • I'm running firefox on a Macbook Air 10.6.8, and the bookmark folders in the bookmarks drop down menu don't open when I mouse over them or click on them. How do I fix this?

I've run diagnostics on the mac air, reloaded firefox, and tried eerything I could think of. The 'show all bookmarks' page works perfectly- it's just the dropdown menu that has problems. All the folders have numerous items in them except for one- which only has two. That one works- the pop out menu for that folder comes out on the left side. All the arrows for the folders are on the right side (pointing right) of the of the drop down bookmark menu, pointing at the right edge of the computer screen. The dropdown menu appears on the right half of the screen, close to the edge. Strangely, my main computer is an iMac desktop, and my mozilla bookmarks dropdown menu folders open on top of the dropdown menu, not out on the side.

I figgered it out. The resolution of the screen was set at 600x800, so the bookmarks dropdown menu took up more space than usual. The pop out folder contents didn't have enough room to pop out. With a resolution for a slightly smaller display the drop down bookmarks menu functions perfectly.

  • "Add Bookmark" = expanded dropdown list

When I want to add a Bookmark in Safari 3.0.4, I click on Bookmarks / Add Bookmark, and I get a little window asking where I want to keep this bookmark. If I click on the drop-down list arrows, a very lengthy, fully-expanded list of all my bookmark folders and sub-folders, opens up. I've got a lot of sub-folders, so it takes a lot of time to scroll down to the bottom.
In Firefox, if I recall correctly, that drop-down list is collapsed - in other words, only the top-level folders show up until you start drilling down into the specific sub-folders you want.
Is there any way to get Safari to show me just the top-level folders and then let me drill down to specific sub-folders? It'd be a lot easier than scrolling through every folder and sub-folder I have.

    Hi all,
Unfortunately, there's no way that I know of to do what you've described. Hopefully someone will come along with a solution. While waiting though, perhaps you could also give Apple your feedback via the 'Report Bug' toolbar button.
That said, I have been a long-time user of Saft (shareware) and it provides an 'Add Bookmark Here' function to the Bookmarks menu, and to each subfolder therein. It's not an ideal solution, especially since it's a paid plugin, but I thought you might find it interesting.

  • I restarted my business Mac, Firefox opened up with the bookmark toolbar of my personal Mac, and I added/subtracted folders;can I get old bookmark toolbar back?

I have two iMacs, each one has a separate set of bookmark folders on the bookmark toolbar. Yesterday, I restarted one iMac to update some software. I noticed this morning that the restarted iMac had the same set of bookmark folders on the bookmark toolbar as the other iMac I run. Since I want and need different bookmarks/folders on each computer, I began deleting unneeded folders from the restarted iMac bookmark toolbar.
When I began using firefox on my other iMac, I noticed that its bookmark toolbar was the same as the one I had deleted folders from. I have tried, but cannot find a way to restore these deleted folders. Is this possible to do?

    Hi,
It seems you have sync setup which you should disconnect if you want separate sets of bookmarks.
This article describes a way to get your bookmarks back, https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/restore-bookmarks-from-backup-or-move-them
If you use time-machine for backups or any other form of backup then use that to restore the bookmarks.
Quit Firefox if it's running. In the Finder, open the Library folder in your home folder (not the Library folder at the top level of your boot volume.) Enter Time Machine and restore the following items:
    Library/Application Support/Firefox
    Library/Application Support/Mozilla
    Library/Preferences/org.mozilla.firefox.plist
    Relaunch Firefox.
    Hope this helps

  • How do you add folders and organize bookmarks? I've been able to do it in the past, but can't seem to figure it out now

I've been trying to add folders to my bookmarks menu and can't find the option to do that.
Also, how do I add directly to a folder. As of now, I have to add it as a loose bookmarked item, then click and drag to a folder.

  • Add bookmark doesn't show folders

MBP 2.6 GHz (2008), 10.6.8, Safari 5.0.5,   When I select Add Bookmark...   I get a dropdown that shows the webpage, and below that Cancel and Add buttons.   Above all of these there should be a pull down with a way to select which folder to store the bookmark in.   If I click around where this should be it finally shows up.  How do I get it to not be hidden to begin with?

Above all of these there should be a pull down with a way to select which folder to store the bookmark in.
You can do that if you update to Safari 5.1

  • Add bookmarks bar folders in ios

How do I add bookmarks bar folders in safari iOS?

Thanks a lot.  Ive spent hours trying to find this.  Not very intuitive, and I've been using Macs for twenty years!  I tried redoing my bookmarks on my MacBook after I posed the question and that did it, but I'm glad to know how to do it on the iPad.  Several sites tell people that bookmark menu folders cannot be added in iOS.  Have a great day.  Rick

  • How do I get rid of "Open All In Tabs" from the Bookmarks dropdown menu? [STUPIDITY] Also, my bookmarks run off the bottom of the screen and I can't see them all.

The bottom of my bookmarks in one subcategory extends beyond the screen on my TV and I can't see them all. I can't see where any arrow to extend the bookmarks to the bottom of the list is so I've been clicking below the last visible bookmark in that list and I hit that STUPID "Open All In Tabs" crap (then everything locks up). WHO IN THE WORLD WOULD WANT TO OPEN ALL OF THEIR BOOKMARKS AT ONCE???? Seems really, really stupid to me. And why won't the bookmarks drop down list allow me to see all of the bookmarks I've saved on that topic? It does not automatically scroll down as large lists on other drop down menus routinely do.

I agree. It is a brainless moronic subcategory!!! I would love to get rid of it!

  • Having just installed the first patch on firefox 4 beta, I now find none of the folders in my bookmarks toolbar will open.

I have a series of folders in my bookmarks toolbar, which used to drop down when clicked. They are now inactive.
Additionally, I have just tried to click the help menu to copy and paste the troubleshooting info, only to discover none of the menus at the top of the page are working either.
    ?

This can be a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • Can no longer add bookmarks to my home screen

I can no longer add bookmarks to my home screen.  As before, I get the choice of "Add to Bookmarks" and "Add to Home Screen", and after chosing "Add to Home Screen", I am asked to save the name as before, but the bookmark is not saved (or at least I can't find any trace of it amongst my home screen bookmarks, even after scrolling up, down and to the right).
As I already have quite a few (but not excessive) bookmarks, most in folders, I tried deleting some and then trying to add a bookmark, but without success.  Restarting doesn't help.  Problem was there before the latest software update, but was not fixed by update.
Anyone have an idea how to fix this?

    Hi Carolyn
I have just spent 3 hours reading and looking for an answer and came across your article here in respect of a similar situation I have with bluetortilla.
I recently dropped my macbook and had to have a new diskdrive replaced. I am a total novice in IT and had a long time in resetting and reconfiguring all my information and migrating my back up from my time machine.
However, since then I have been having alot of issues with Safari which I have never had in the 3 years I have been using Mac.
My problems currently are as follows, after each time I quit safari and when I close the mac and rebooting it.
    1.    All my history is not there when I re-open Safari. Only the history from when I last migrate the data from my time machine is there. However, after following the your instructions to bluetortilla, the old history is now deleted and the history of today remains.
    2.    Everytime I add a new bookmark and save a webpage into this bookmark, it disappears every time I quit and reopen Safari.
    3.    Similarly, even when I save a new webpage into an existing bookmark, this particular webpage disappears when I quit and reopen Safari.
    4.     I also deleted some of the default webpage in bookmark bars, but again these reappears when I quit and reopen Safari.
All-in-all, everytime I delete or add into my bookmarks during a session on Safari, seems to disappear the next time I quit and reopen Safari. Previously all my histroy disappear but it seems ok now after following your instructions here.
Would appreciate your advise and help here. It has been frustrating that I have not been able to save any webpages into my bookmarks or create any new bookmarks without it all disappearing the next time I open Safari.
    Jimmy

  • I have reinstalled Firefox 26 as well as reset it to default. Besides losing the bookmarks, my tool bar does not function- particularly add bookmarks.

Not sure if either Windows or Firefox update caused my bookmarks to be lost. I uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox (26) as well as made multiple attempts to reset to default. Any attempts to restore only show the current date and NOT the date when last had the bookmarks. I have researched (ad nauseum) and have found multiple profiles- a couple of which show bookmarks backups from an earlier time, although earlier than I wanted (gap of 2+ weeks from other profiles up until loss of the bookmarks). I have attempted to copy the older bookmarks backup folder(s) and place them on to the desktop. When I tried to restore from a file, it was not recognized so I'm not sure if the file format is different I'm also not sure if I'm doing all of this correctly because within those backup folders (after clicking on the folder) it shows the Json files. Needless to say, I'm pulling my hair out and said lost bookmarks are important for school research. This has happened before and "somehow" (after reading different sources) I was able to get the lost bookmarks back. Now, nothing is working and can not add bookmarks. I'm "somewhat" knowledgeable of computer glitches and usually have corrected them within a reasonable amount of time. I haven't been this lost (and frustrated) in a good while. Sorry for the length here, but this has become quite cumbersome. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

<u>Initially back up all the profiles,</u> you have they will hopefully contain useful bookmarks files.
*[[Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles]]
It may even be possible to repair some files or add bookmarks from other profiles so it is important to backup whatever is available.
<u>Take CARE with any restore attempts</u> .json files overwrite existing bookmarks so you should always manually backup existing bookmarks before any restore attempt.
*[[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer]]
    * HTML may be useful they append
    <u>Multiple Profiles?</u><br />
The actual full working database is ''places.sqlite'' although other files may be useful. In your case there will be multiple copies of this database, one in each profile.
    * Why the multiple profiles ?
** Do you normally deliberately run and use multiple profiles ?
** Are these all within the same OS user account ?
    <u>Standard procedures </u>
If bookmarks have stopped working unexpectedly the database file '''places.sqlite'' may have been corrupted. Finding the profile and deleting, or better still renaming the database will force creation of a new file. You may lose an bookmarks created in the last day that Firefox was open. See
*[[Can't add, change or save bookmarks - How to fix#w_create-a-new-bookmarks-file]]'''_create-a-new-bookmarks-file'''
    * To find the profile easily <br> Use '''Firefox Button → Help → Troubleshooting Information [open folder](or similar options)''' <br />See [[Profiles - Where Firefox stores your bookmarks, passwords and other user data#w_how-do-i-find-my-profile]]'''_how-do-i-find-my-profile'''
    * Also note [[Recover lost or missing Bookmarks]]
I presume that you are talking about the one computer and not upgrading the Windows Operating System, just uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox.
Ordinarily the bookmarks are not removed. Firefox attempts to retain the profile that includes bookmarks in case you decide to reinstall it again.
If you aggressively remove Firefox and all associated files that you will lose the bookmarks. You may be lucky and find that the bookmarks file has been tracked by Windows and possibly is restorable.
If you have any current bookmarks save them now as an HTML files by exporting them as HTML. This sort of backup has the advantage that it can be appended to current bookmarks.
*see [[Export Firefox bookmarks to an HTML file to back up or transfer bookmarks]]
It is important to note the ordinary backups overwrite and destroy any existing bookmarks when you import them.
*Do a full backup of bookmarks before you attempt any restore. <br />See [[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer]]
The bookmarks themselves are stored within the Firefox profile and the file is called places.sqlite , that is the file you want. (There are also backup bookmarks within a backup folder inside the profile, they may also be useful files.)
*You can find the profile from<br />Firefox Button -> Help-> Troubleshooting Information -> [Open folder] <br />See [[Profiles - Where Firefox stores your bookmarks, passwords and other user data#w_how-do-i-find-my-profile]]_how-do-i-find-my-profile
