Open iBooks Author with NO template?

It seems that it doesn't matter whether we choose "New" or "New from template browser" from the File menu, we always get the Template browser. I would like to start out with a truly blank document and build it up from scratch rather than having to tear apart one of the existing templates.
Can we create a BLANK template - even manually?

Having the same problem. I can't seem to delete the front matter that I do not need—Intro Media, Glossary.
Also having problems add bookmarks and links from Contents. Doesn't work for me according to the instructions

'custom' font sounds like you may be working with a font that is unsupported on iOS/iPad.
Supported fonts are found in the pull-down font menu in the toolbar. Authors are obligated (mostly) to stick to that list.

Can't Open iBook Author File - index.xml "missing"

I've been working on a new book for about two weeks now. I've opened, closed, saved and changed it many times. I went to open the book today in iBook Author to continue adding content and I got this error message:
"'Book Name' couldn't be opened. The required index.xml file is missing."
I've tried re-installing iBooks, accessing the the file under a different user name, but everytime I'm getting the same error message. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I've already spent about 40 hours with this book and I'd hate to loose all my work.

I know this is a few weeks old, but I just had this happen and here is how I fixed it:
Duplicate the .iba file (the iBooks Author project) to your desktop or wherever you'd like.
Next, delete the .iba extension and make it .zip and click "Use .zip" when the dialog box pops up.
Then, double-click your newly created ZIP file. It will extract to a folder in the same directory.
Now, add the .iba extension to this folder. It will pop up another dialog box asking if you want to do this, click "Use .iba".
Your file should work now.

Why can't I open iBooks Author app anymore?

I have stopped using iBooks Author for a while, then out of no where I want to just mess around with it. I go to open it and it says, "iBooks Author cannot be opened because of a problem". What in the world? Almost no Apple apps work for me anymore. iWork doesn't work, and Messages doesn't work either. What happened?!

That is most likely your problem....8.54 is right at the minimum for OS X just to be able to breathe and stay running.
Clear off tens of GB free, then use Disk Utility to check/repair after booting into Lion's Rescue partition...hold down cmd-r while booting to get there.
I'd start shopping for a larger and faster drive. Cost is low now, I think.

Why do I need Pages 5 to open iBooks Author documents?

I am a TA at a college and I have been grading students' iBook submissions for a class. However, this week when I went to open their submissions I got the following error message: "You need a newer version of Pages to open this document." Clicking the "Learn More" button sent me to the Pages 5 website, which said I had to pay $20 for Pages. I do not currently have Pages on my computer (MacBook Pro OS X 10.7.5). Do I really have to pay $20 to do my grading? Is there any way around this? Can the students save their submissions as an older version?

I've just had this issue. Edited an .iba file on a different computer and then when I tried to open it again on my old iMac that it was originally created on it gave precisely that error: You need a newer version of Pages to open this document." Google points to this webpage, but all the answers above miss the point the op was making which is that iBooks Author is giving a stupid error message. The fix was to update iBooks Author to the latest version on my old computer. (Basically the other mac had a more recent version of iBooks Author on it.)
What a waste of a morning, installing the hideous Yosemite, fixing the god-awful look of the thing, upgrading pages (unnecessarily it seems), and finally getting iBooks Author upgraded.
Anyway, I hope this answer might help others avoid similar.

IBooks Author not saving templates

I am not able to save an iBook Author file I am working on (.iba format) to an iBooks Author Template (.ibatemplate) via File > Save as Template. I can go in and change the extention and then see the file in the Template Chooser view, but this seems like an unusual hack AND I get no preview for the template.
Anyone else experienceing this issue.
I am on version 2.1.2 (462) on OSX 10.9.3.

The normal process involves saving so that your creation is saved to 'My Templates'. That assumes you want it to show in the template chooser.
I've never tweaked the file name suffix.

HT4980 Adding Tamil Font to an iBook thats created with iBooks Author ?

I am trying to add Tamil Font ( Used for Indian Regional Language - Tamil ). I Have over 1500 titles on print and would like to digitalize them for iPads.
When I opened iBooks Author, I don't see any Tamil Fonts available. How do I get around this or is there any other steps that I need to take inorder to make this work.

What you type in iBooks Author is automatically Unicode. I was referring to the case where you might use some sort of scanning to convert your print titles to digital text.

Very simple, discuss the needs of teh book and ask each to create a chapter and allocate who does Chapter 1...and repeat for each chapter.

Very easy - each student and yourself needs to download and install teh free app "Dropbox" there are others - this is the best IMHO - each student then uploads their chapter to Dropbox. The other and maybe easier way if everytbody is meeting in a "classroom" is the inevitable USB!
One ( or more ) person is designated as editor and pulls down the chapters from drop box using the links or public folder access. Once gathered on one machine, thay are assembled in iBooks Author.
How to create the book?
The first essential is to decide which template to use. Will it be a standard freebie or will it be editted and customised to your own design.
Once the template is completed - it is saved as a template and save again as template "yourname1"
Now you have two copies on standby. open as an iBooks Author from the template and save as ( whatever your books is to be named). Each student then gets a copy of that file... by same process of using Dropbox or USB
The editor ends up with 20 files and if each uses its designated chapter number....
Have all your 20 chapters available and simply copy and paste into the book tree on the left.
After the first past- delete the original chapter 1 - you paste becomes Chapter one - now repeat the process.
Its quite easy really. I suggest you create a few chapters in a Test book and then open another different template as test 2 and start copying and pasting chapters to get the hang of it.
The book as a whole now needs editting if you intend to have a glossary and maybe tweek or correct anything in the other chapters.

If you search the iBooks store for iBooksAuthor, you find any number of books available which will guide you through the basics. Download the free books and work through them, later you may decide to purchase other books.
If you have an iTunes Connect account, open and look for Deliver your Content ...open that section., top right are number of PDFs you should download and study. Below those, is an hour long video which will also show you the various functions available.
Its worthwhile to open the Help file in iBooksAuthor and work through it.
I also suggest that you open iBooks Author and open every menu option and become familiar with the functions.
Open any template and simply practice adding, changing and organising the book..this is better than starting a book without knowing what to do!

How can I import an ibook file back into iBook Author?

I exported an ebook from iBook Author thinking it is the equivalent of saving the file.
I did not save the file, I only exported it and than exited the program.
My active file is vannished.
I need to make some adjustments to the ebook, but can not bring it back up.
Is there a way that I can re-import the iBook file back into iBook Author?
When I open iBook Author and try to open the exported file the program does not recognise the ibook file...

Check for previous versions of that book in iBA....even if not saved.
You can dig into the .ibooks file by changing the suffix to zip, but you'll have to manually extract what you can from assets you find. Please only do this with your own books.

IBooks Author crashing SFWordProcessing

After producing about 80 pages and following the last Mountain Lion update (now using OSX 10.8.2) I can no longer open iBooks Author without it crashing, making my work inaccessible. The error message begins:

Suggesting that the fault lies with SFWordProcessing.framework. I have tried the solution suggested by Apple for fixing a similar problem that occurred with iWeb, i.e., restarting in safe mode and then restarting again, but that has no effect whatsoever. Every time it crashes a report is sent to Apple but, as others have noticed, Apple never seems to respond to these crash reports or to messages in these forums, so has anyone else had this same problem and managed to resolve it?
I'm thinking that the best thing I can do is to give up on iBooks Author and move to preparing an html file for Kindle publishing.

I felt the same way. I checked each item and found I entered too many categories and put two author and was repetitive
My last issue is obtaining ISBN numbers...how I get them.

Using iBooks created by iBooks Author

We created an internal orientation book on iBooks Author, with the intention of using the book on an iPad. We can't get it to show up on the iPad in iBooks. Any suggestions? We're using iOS8.2 and 10.10.2 on the Mac. Thanks.

We exported it into .ibooks format. We're able to open it on other Macs by posting the file to our FTP site, and downloading it (we've just started to build the book, and its too big to email already). Help in iBooks Author suggests emailing it to the iPad and opening it (too big) or posting it to the iTunes "window", then sync with an iPad. The and directs us to look for further info in iTunes Help, but I can't find any further directions there.

IBooks Author Keep crashing (tried reinstall)

I am using new macbook Pro with OSX 10.8.2
after i download and open iBooks Author, it just crash 10 seconds later.
Tried many times, and then i reinstall and restart the computer, but it doesnt help.

i cleared my caches file this worked for me. this occured three times there is a number to call apple for support, they helped me it did take over 1 hour to problem solve the issues though

IBooks Author Freezes

I downloaded the new OSX last night for my iMac and now when I open iBooks Author it just freezes, is anyone else having this problem? It worked fine before I got the new OSX, can someone please help?

with the new version iBooks Author (2.1) you can add captions to the images or captions?, I can't use the option maximize by clicking in inspector options, just want to know if anyone has the same problem, greetings.
