Open imovie 6 project in imovie9

I have seen many threads saying "file, import, imovie hd project".. I have tried, and all I get is a new event in the Library with the relevabt name but with no content. It says "no matching video"  I have 25gb of content!  The project is on an external hard drive and is clearly visable, not greyed out.  Anyone know what I am doing wrong.
I can clearly extract the files somehow and start from scratch ...but......
Project opens fine in imovie 6 on my old iBook from the external.

Thanks Winston.  That is what I was finding and, as you explain, I can find ways round it by exporting or converting the files.  The thread at:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/11218827#11218827
seemed to imply that you could import and certainly doing "file, import, imovie HD project" does make it look as if it is possible - until nothing much happens!
Fortunately the project really has nothing much in it apart from the raw video so not much lost.  I really just dumped the files so I could reuse the video cam memory card.
Thanks for your help.

  • Opening iMovie 6 Projects in Final Cut Pro?

I have a load of unfinished iMovie 6 HD projects that I'd like to finish in Final Cut Pro, firstly is it possible to open iMovie 6HD projects in FCP and if so how?
    Thanks

Not a very good way obviously as you you'd have a string of shot with no handles. FCP doesn't work in the same format DV as iMovie does, so the audio will need to be rendered. The best thing is to try opening the project and see if it works. You could try taking the media from inside the iMovie package and reconsidering the project in FCP, but again the video format is not the same and will need rendering.

  • Will iMovie HD open iMovie 08 Project?

Based on what I've read, I can't see iMovie 08 replacing iMovie HD, but I could see it being useful in just the sort of circumstances it seems intended for -- a quickie movie that can be shared right away.
I could also, however, see myself wanting to fine-tune a quickie project created in iMovie 08 by using iMovie HD.
Will iMovie HD open iMovie 08 projects? If not, can anyone suggest a way to, in effect, have the best of both worlds?
    Thanks

Projects cannot be shared between iMovie '06 and iMovie '08. '08 can import '06 projects with some documented limitations. There is no quality loss going in that direction. To go from '08 to '06, you have to export your project as a movie file. Your best choise is using the Quicktime DV Stream format, as that is the native format for iMovie '06. Then import your movie into a new project in iMovie '06. You will get one long clip in iMovie '06, will all effects, transitions, and titles rendered. There is a slight quality loss in the process, as iMovie '08 is not a DV editing application, and re-encodes your clips, even if they were in DV format originally.

If the system just Restarted on it's own, Shut down while you were working on something then started back up all those changes, edits, you had done in that app, document, are gone.

  • Problem with opening iMovie 2 projects in iMovie 5I submitted this question

I submitted this question some time ago and had some interaction with Lennart Thelander but it was never resolved. I didn't explain my question in as much detail as perhaps necessary to understand what happened, so I will try again.
I was using iMovie 2 for years and created many projects consisting of portions of clips split and moved around, audio, titles, transitions, the works, all dragged into the timeline and saved. Earlier this year I got iMovie 5 HD. When I opened one of my iMovie 2 projects, this message appeared:
"The project “home again home again” was saved with an older version of iMovie. Opening it in this version will cause it to be upgraded, which will make it unreadable by older versions. Are you sure you want to open it?"
I assumed that this could only make for improvement of the project, so I hit OK. When the project opened, the clips were now all exactly "9:28" in length (i.e. 10 minutes), and all the original breakdown of components (above-mentioned) was lost. It seems that iMovie 5 simply flattened the iMovie 2 project and broke it into 10 minutes segments.
My main question is whether there is any way to restore the original movie in its previous fom, with all the component parts. If I want to use any of those video clips in another movie, I need the original clips, which iMovie 5 seems to have flattened and essentially destroyed.

    Hi
There are two levels of problem here
    A. How to Copy Event's and Project's to external hard disks
    - CAN NOT BE DONE - via DeskTop/Finder - must be done within the iMovie application
    - The external hard disk must be - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted - UNIX / DOS / FAT32 / Mac OS Exchange - do not work for Video
    B. Regarding Audio and photos used in Movie Project's
    - There is NO Copy of them (or video) in Your Project.
    - The Project is no movie at all - it is just a small TEXT document pointing to where material is stored and howto it's supposed to be presented as the Movie You are making.
IF Audio and Photos are not copies over to the external hard disk - and in Your movie introduced from this new storage - the new Mac can not find and connect to this material. It just don't work.
    To move
    • iTunes
    • GarageBand
    • iPhoto
Libraries to the external hard disk - so that the New environment will find and connect to is - has never worked for me.
I maker a dedicated folder and put copies (of audio and photos etc.) into this - and when copied over to external hard disk - re-import them (one at a time) into my movie project. Now iMovie on second Mac will know what and where to look for it/them.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Trouble opening iMovie HD6 projects on iMovie 08.

    Hi there,
I have just bought a new iMac, with iMovie 08. I have all my prior projects, created in iMovie HD6 stored on a LaCie external drive. The projects read and open on my laptop (running iMovie 06), but show blank files when plugged into the new iMac. How do I get them to open on both?

iMovie 08 cannot 'read' all of iMovie HD6's transitions/effects and will show blank files if you try to open version 6 movies with iMovie 08. You can download a free version of iMovie 6... version 6.0.4. This is the same as version 6.0.3, but it is only available to those of us who purchased new Macs that have iLife 08 preinstalled. The reason for this is for exactly what you are finding. You still need iMovie 6 to open your older projects and probably for creating new ones. Both versions of iMovie can coexist on the same computer......
Just tried looking for 6.0.4 and cannot find it...Maybe it is in the iLife updater released today. Will check and let you know.

  • Trouble opening iMovie v4 project in iMovieHD 6

I just tried to open an iMovie 4 project in v6. I agreed to have it convereted, and up it came with no errors. The clips are all there in the right order and length, and the music is in place. However, the clips are like ghosts. Just black with no audio.
It should be noted that I recovered this project from a failing hard drive using Data Rescue II. However, I did import the entire project folder. Any ideas?
    MacBook 2.0 GHz, 1GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Karl,
Thanks very much for your reply. I tried to keep it simple, but here's the details:
I was able to successfully recover an iMovie v5 project and open it in iMovie v6. The v5 projects appear as just one file (correct?), which probably helped out a lot in this case.
I'm still recovering files intermittently from this dead hard drive (on an iMac G3). So, I haven't had a chance to try to open in the v4 project within iMovie v4. I will do that after I've recovered all desired files, replaced the hard drive, and re-installed Tiger and iLife (according to your suggestion, I would do well to install iLife '04, not iLife '05 on this iMac).
This brings up the next question. Some of my previous movies were created in iMovie v2 or v3. It sounds like your advice is to open them in the oldest possible version of iLife. Is that right? Or, otherwise you suggest that I move the Quicktime movie file from the old projects into a new folder and then open it that way. How does that work with this apparently streamlined iMovie HD project file?
Lastly, a short description of my experience with Data Rescue II. It has performed superbly for my situation. Based on the last message this iMac displayed before crashing, I think perhaps my hard drive simply lost the ability to write. But, it appears to have retained the ability to read, so I've been able to recover all the files that I've wanted to so far. I believe that I was lucky. Data Rescue II is great because there is a free demo on-line that allows to see and scan your injured drive. If you can't, you don't buy the software. Very good idea!
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Opening iMovie '08 Projects from Different Installation

    Hi -
    Question 1:
I have 10 iMovie '08 projects saved on a USB HD from a prior installation of iMovie '08. I cannot open these projects or, make iMovie '08 "see" them at all. I can right-click the files and view the contents where I see the different size movies ('Large', 'Mobile', etc.) that I created. How do I access these project files in my new iMovie '08 installation?
    Question 2:
I want to configure iMovie '08 so that the default location for ALL actions is an external HD volume. I do not want any files associated with movie production to ever be saved in the ~/Movies directory of my home directory. Is this even possible? I tried the symlink trick noted elsewhere in this forum, but it did not work. (Actually, the symlink process worked fine but, iMovie '08 still saves projects in ~/Movies.) My editing need are technically simple but, I have a lot of files and want to tightly manage the results. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
I had the same problem...I created a movie on my laptop while away for Christmas and tried to transfer it to my iMac when I returned.
What worked for me was to copy the movie into the iMovie 08's Project Library folder - it apparently it looks there for movies when launching. I found the folder by opening a finder window and then searching for a movie that was already in the iMovie project library. My folder is located in my Movie folder and is called "iMovie Projects".
    I hope this helps!
I don't have an answer to your second question. Sorry

  • IMovie '08 won't open iMovie 6 project.

Am I missing something here? Even on import, the iMovie 6 project is grayed out, but not the individual movie files. Seems the "Open Project" under File menu disappeared. Any suggestion as to how older project can be opened? Thanks in advance.

A step back to backward compatibility??!!! This is such a disappointing "upgrade"! I should have read the fine print before shelling out $80 for this! I just assumed that since all the other upgrades had no issues with opening previous versions of iMovie, that '08 would not be different. I edit in FCP 6.01 but my son, a big fan of iMovie had to revert back to iMovie 6.x. I hope an update will allow iMovie users to open their last masterpiece produced in this "matured" version.

  • Open iMovie 09 project in iMovie 08?

I'm trying to open a project that was created in iMovie 09 with iMovie 08. The only way I've figured out to do this is to export the 09 project and then import it as a movie into 08 then drag the event to a project. Are there any other ways to do this?

  • Can not open imovie ios project in imovie osx

hi i have importet my edited imovie project from my ipad mini to my imac.
I would like to edit more on my Imac, but when i trry to open the file, i get the message:
"This version of Imovie can not import this imovie to iOS-project"
    Not further options or possibilities.
I have recent update of Imovie 11 on Imac, in on 10.7.5 (lion) and my imovie on ipad is also updated.
Im kind of stranded here, does anyone have an idea to a solution.?
    Kindly
    Peter

I'm sorry. I have no idea what's causing your problems.
If your operating system is up to date and you have the latest version of Quicktime, you should have no problems at least opening the software.
Have you tried the tweak recommended in the FAQs to the right of this forum?
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/542377?tstart=0
You also may want to uninstall and reinstall the program, just in case somethign didn't take the first time.
BTW, have you really got a 1 terrabyte drive that's already got 700 gigabytes filled on it? That's a lot of data!

  • IMovie Freezes when opening iMovie HD project

I am trying to continue my project that I started awhile ago in iMovie '07. The project is HD and about 2 gigabytes. But, when I try to open it in iMovie '08, iMovie stops responding and I have to force quit it.

with this specific project it allways crashes
You haven't given us much to work with...
What is the source and format of the content you are having problems with?

  • Open iMovie 4 project in '08?

I haven't used iMovie since version 4 but I now have '08 and want to finish an incomplete project in the new version.
Is this not advisable? iMovie 08 does not recognise the project and I suppose I could force it to open but I don't want to risk messing it up.
Is it best to finish it in the older version and if so can I run version 4 on my new intel iMac?

iM vers.4 has a very different file structure than iM08 .. usually, iM08 opens older projects, but just the clips in edited length.. no effects, titles, no music etc. ..
I would finish the project in iMvers.4 .. which should run on 10.4./5 in Rosetta mode.. (never tried)

  • Open iMovie 10 Project in FCP X

My son edited a movie in iMovie 10 and wanted to choose different fonts for the titles. For some reason we haven't been able to figure out, he is unable to edit the font styles as that option appears to be grayed out, regardless of which title style he chooses (reading in the Apple Support Communities, this is either a bug or intentional), so we decided to add titles in FCP X. But we can't find the project now! Where in the heck does iMovie 10 save projects?
    Chris

Thanks so much! I followed that info and was able to get much of the material up in iMovie. There are still some projects that it cant find the media for, but that's not surprising. I've got files and folders spread between two different drives, in all kinds of places. iMovie shows three different Libriaries in the lefthand colum now, iMovie Library, iMovie Library 1 and iMovie Library 2.
I was able to find the main Movies folder, with its iMovie Porjects and iMovie events folder and I put them at the root level of the external.
Now I need to figure out where this new material has been stored, then find all those other folder and files and somehow get them into iMovie as well.
Eventually I'd like for the iMovie library and and all its assoicated files and folders to be stored on one of these externals Iit may be that way now...) Do you know how to check which folders and files iMovie is referencing?
