Open in another program

How do I open a photo in the iPhoto library in Photoshop? With most apps you can find the photo in a file directory and select "open with ...." however iPhoto seems to store all of the photos in a seemingly inaccessible library. thanks

The one way to Never open a pic in iPhoto is by surfing the iPhoto Library Folder - every time you do that you risk damaging your library.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor)as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically.
This is the only way that changes made in Photoshop will be reflected in iPhoto.
Otherwise: There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
To upload to MySpace or any site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser. Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
Also, for 10.5 users: If you use the extended Open or Attach dialogue (with Column View) you can scroll to the bottom of the Shortcuts and find the Media browser there. Select any pic you want from there.

Are you saving the files to a server? Did you email a version of the file and then continue to work on it without closing it?

i tried to copy an odt file, while an older version was open in the destination folder., ang i got this:
Exception in thread "main" java.io.FileNotFoundException: ... (Access is denied)
I printed this:
System.out.println(" " + cfile.canExecute() + " " + cfile.canRead() + " " + cfile.canWrite()+ " " );
resulting: true, true, true
So, i could write the file, while it is opened, said the Java 6...
How can i test wether it is opened by another program?

Try to open it. If it's open by another program you will get a java.io.FileNotFoundException 'Access is denied'.Oh, i user a FileInputStream, and an exception was throwned.
I thought, i can test it using some kind a boolean method...
using a try block to test wether a file is opened by another program is a little bit strange to me...

I experience a weird issue.
I have Windows 2008 server. Created 2 shares on the server. Every day starting between 2 and 7 PM i cannot save or rename files and folders at the root of the share. I have no problem to rename files in sub folders. This issue happens if i trying to rename
file on vie server console, or accessing the share from Windows 7. no issues from Windows XP. the error i get: "the action cannot be completed because the file is open on another program"
I don't have any software running on that server except Backup Exec that runs backup at night. I uninstalled Antivirus, still same issue.

The folder rename operation fails because thumbcache.dll still has an open handle to the local thumbs.db file and does not currently implement a mechanism to release the handle to the file in a more dynamic and timely fashion.

Saving completed file for opening in another program

I have been using Pinnacle Studio 10.7 because it allows me to produce HD-DVD on regular DVDs. (The drawback is the approximate 20-minute time max on each DVD.) I'd like to start doing work in Premiere, then save my work to a file that I can simply open and immediately write to a DVD without losing HD quality.
What file type is best for saving my work in HD quality that can be reopened by another program without liosing that quality. I've thought that a workaround might be to simply write the new file to tape and then recapture in Studio. Can anyone help me, please? Thank you!

There is a way to fool Premiere Pro into writing the file. Just start the process, and while it is transcoding, disconnect the camera. You will eventually get an error message. Before you click OK you rename the file so Premiere Pro can't delete it.
That makes a perfect M2T file that can be used without having to recapture.
By the way, you can use many different utilities to write a data file to the DVD-ROM. I use WMV or M2T files on a DVD-ROM since my player supports them.

Need Help With Exporting EPS Files That Will Be Opened In Another Program

I am trying to export some files from Illustrator in EPS format, to be used in another program called "Blufftitler". Their documentation is pretty sparse and doesn't go into much detail. It only mentions the following:
"Limited support
BluffTitler has limited EPS support. It only imports filled shapes built out of lines and curves from uncompressed, unoptimized EPS files."
No matter what settings I try in Illustrator when exporting the EPS file, it won't open in Blufftitler, and keeps throwing me errors. I tried Choosing "Illustrator 3" as the format, and turning off the preview option. I also tried "expanding" the shape itself several times too. Is there some other way in Illustrator to just export a bare-bones EPS files without any extras or other stuff that might cause problems with other programs?
The funny thing is, when I create EPS files with another program, such as Vector Magic, they work fine in Blufftitler - it just seems to have a problem with EPS files created in Illustrator specifically.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

The main problem is with BluffTitler is it doesn't have a very good eps handler as it can really only import eps files that are about 10k each and are not overly complex. If you look at all the sample .eps files that come with it, each one is about 1 or 2k each. A simple circle in Illustrator, even when saved as v3 without a preview, is around 258k. The reason for the larger file sizes is due to the extra things being saved in the file that aren't even on the page, such as brush presets and graphic styles. The sample .eps files that come with BluffTitler don't have these presets so the files are already smaller.
Something you may want to try is to open up one of the sample eps files and use that file for your vector work but save the file with a new name. I found that by doing this I could get the files down to a much smaller size. You may also want to setup any vectors in Illustrator first, save them, and then open the files in InkScape, http://www.inkscape.org. From what I've read, InkScape can get you fairly small file sizes so it's something you should check out.

How to read data from a file that is already open by another program

I have made IV, where I'm trying to read data from a log file, that is being updated by another program while my IV runs.
To be clear, this program writes data continuously to this file and I want to read from the file in LV at the same time.
The problem is that LV reports an error when I'm trying to read the log file, even if I use to "read only" mode.
I believe that the program that is producing the file, have some kind of lock on the file. I have tryed to copy the file and then reading from the copied file, but LV throws already an error when I try to copy the file.
Has anyone tryed this, and found a solution.?
Additional info: The program that produces the file is STM Studio

when that file is locked by the other program you can't do anything about that - apart from quitting that other program. Probably this isn't an option to you…

I am using labview to read a text file, also there is one more software(not lab view) is writing to the same file which I am using to read.My problem is that ,is it possible to read a file which is already openned by another software ?

that depends on that other software...
- When writing to a file usually it is opened with exclusive access rights to the writing software. No other software can open the file simultanously.
- The file may be opened with non-exclusive access by the writing software. Then LabVIEW may access the file too.
- The file may be opened with exclusive access rights by the writing software for each write access and released when write access is finished. Then LabVIEW may open the file in parallel, but errors may occure for simultanous file access from both parties...
It's never a good idea to share one resource (your file) for several requests (your different executables). It may work (with several conditions), but it doesn't need to.

HT1923 when right-clicking C/Program Files (x86) Bonjour, it say the folder or a file in it is open in another program. How do I overcome this?

am trying to uninstall all components of itunes, according to the apple support guidelines, as itunes was not recognising my iphone, although windows was recognising it. I am going through all the steps accordingly, but there isn't a note about what to do if this happens. Where else could Bonjour be open so that I can close it?

Just stopped working today after my Windows 7 laptop automatically updated last night. This site works fine (still!) in IE on this machine.

application/octet-stream is a generic content (MIME) type. Firefox will always show the "open with" download dialog if a server sends a file with such a MIME type. You shouldn't get that MIME type with every web page that you open. You may have security software (firewall) that has changed the original content type.
A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox without informing you about that, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.<br />
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process.<br />

Win 7 After uninstalling Firefox from Control Panel, "The action can't be completed because the folder or file in it is open in another program"

Update failed numerous times. Uninstalled FF using Control Panel. Followed instructions to delete the Mozilla folder from AppData/Local/Mozilla. Then the "Folder in Use" prompt comes up and I have to cancel the delete. Folder was created 4/8/2011, but I can't find the folder using the search command. Can't install a fresh install of Firefox 18. Using Windows 7 64-bit. I no longer have FireFox on my system that I can see.

Okay, I drilled down further:
Specifically, the files I cannot delete are:
     A driver with the following location:
          Program Files > Common Files > Apple > Internet Services > ShellStreams.resources > en.lproj >ShellStreamsLocalized.dll
     And a driver with the following location:
           Program Files > Common Files > Apple > Internet Services > ShellStreams64.dll

Use LV to read data from a file that is already open in another program.

My operators use an office application where they pull up PDF and Word data sheets for various components that we test.
The URL looks like this:

I have no idea how to get to this from LV.
What I need: when an operator selects a document (PDF or Word) from this list I want LV to know what document was selected and have LV read the data from it.

I mistyped. It's not an office application but a Windows application that stores documents on our company intranet. The user clicks on a hyperlink of a document that can be either in Word or PDF format and it opens the document. I want LV to "see" this somehow so I can get the text data from the document. I realize this is more Microsoft/.net/magic than LV but was just wondering if anyone else has done something like this.

After I install Itunes 10.5.2 and open itunes a window opens stating another program is not allowing itunes to burn cd's. Next, I get an error window stating itunes 42404 is missing. I've uninstalled itunes 3 times and re-installed. No luck.

After I install iTunes 10.5.2 and open iTunes a window opens stating "The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and CD's and DVD's are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes." This happens everytime.
After that on one occasion a window stated "Itunes msi) was missing. Upon uninstalling and reinstalling that disapeared. Now I get a window stating, (A required Itunes component is not installed. Please repair or reinstall Itunes.(_42404)"

Please help. I cannot delete any adobe files because get message above. I have tried repairing Adobe Acrobat but does not help.

I have no idea of your Acrobat version. For example, AA9 is currently at 9.5.4. The updates may resolve your problem (Help>Updates). However, you may find you have to not only close Acrobat, but also check the running tasks to be sure it is totally closed. Do not disable AcroTray or you will lose the ability to print to the Adobe PDF printer.
