'open in new tab' opens new window instead

My system just went through a bunch of updates, maybe that was Windows 7, but I'm unsure. I didn't initiate them. Anyway, now when I right click 'open in new tab' instead a new window opens. I have read a bunch of other similar posted questions the answers to which do NOT solve the problem I'm having. I've gone into Tools>Options>Tabs and selected the appropriate boxes. PLEASE read this post carefully and only respond if you have a working answer. Thank you very much!
My system is Windows 7
I use Firefox as my default browser

The items on the right-click context menu should be independent of your settings and should work as described.
I think there might be an exception for links with certain kinds of scripts attached, so if this only affects some links or links on a particular sites, you could post some page addresses and describe which links cause the problem.
Do you have any tab-related extensions such as Tab Mix Plus? If so, please review the settings to make sure they haven't become changed or corrupted.
You also could test whether Firefox works with extensions disabled. One way is to try Firefox's Safe Mode. That's a standard diagnostic tool to bypass interference by extensions (and some custom settings). More info: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]].
You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using
Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Reset)
Any difference?

  • When opening new tab, a new window opens instead; 2nd window does allow you to open new tab

boot up firefox, click to open a new tab, a new window opens up instead; in the original window, if you keep clicking to open a new tab it opens it in the 2nd window.

I'm having this problem, but I don't have the textarea cache add-on, nore the MozBar 2.3.
Now that I think about, I did just update an add-on (imtranslator), maybe that's what causing this to happen for me..
edit: yep, disabling it fixed the problem for me.

  • Firefox 4 new tab opens new windows instead

After upgrade to Firefox 4, the feature "mouserightclick-open new tab" opens a new window, instead.
From then on, all "open new tab" operations open new tabs in the other window, the second one created.

Thanks for the hint, cor-el , but problem persisted even with all Add-ons disabled.
But after some 8 days and several O.S. reboots, the problem disappeared .
No action was taken, I suppose that it was some bug that the developers corrected.
    Issue solved.

  • When clicking CTRL+Link my new tab opens in the background window, instead of the foreground window I'm using. Is there a way to make this work the way it used to, where the new tab always opens in whatever window I was currently using?

I use a web based software for work. I go to a web page listing all employees as links (Window A). When I click an employee link a new window opens (Window B). Window B contains links, i.e. Add Client, Change Address, Change Phone Number, Change Name, Upload Photo, etc... When I hold CTRL and left click the links in Window B, the new tab opens in Window A. I don't understand why this has changed, as I've been using this method to open new tabs in my current window in both of the previous versions of Firefox.

That didn't work, but thank you very much for the offer of help. I had already tried that option.
To give you an example of what I'm speaking, I found this page that recreates the scenario.
    1. Goto [http://www.kirupa.com/developer/mx/centered_popup.htm http://www.kirupa.com/developer/mx/centered_popup.htm]
    2. Click the GO in the center of the box on their page (This creates a pop-up window with links to other programming pages)
    3. CTRL+left click any of those links. The page opens in the background/original window, not the pop up window where you are currently working. And, with your solution takes me back to that window and the new tab.

  • New tabs open in new window or in a pre-existing window that was not currently being used.

What has been happening is that I was running two windows of Firefox at the same time and when trying to open a new tab, the new tab would open in the window that I wasn't currently using. Afterwards I closed one window and upon trying to open links in a new tab, instead it would open a new window.
I have checked the option settings that opening a new window would open a new tab instead is on, which it is.

This can also be a bug.

  • Clicking 'Open in new tab' opens in new window

Since the latest update (8.01), I've been unable to open links in new tabs without dragging the link up to the tab bar. Alt-clicking the link and clicking 'open in new tab' opens the link in a new window instead (The 'open in new window' works as it should). Also, middle button clicking opens in new window, even though I have the 'Open new windows in a new tab instead' selected in the tabs option menu.

And now it's started working fine...odd.

I usually use Ubuntu, and am not aware of HTML5 being the default for Flash videos on Windows.
Is it more likely you have chosen an option on the YouTube website to use HTML5. I think this page offers support and includes an option to toggle HTML5 or FlashPlayer.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.<br />
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.<br />

  • IE11 opening 'New Tabs' as 'New Window'

//Posted already over at Answers Microsoft who then requested me to post here.
    Original Thread: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/ie11-windows_7/ie11-opening-new-tabs-as-new-window/9836eb86-9879-46e6-8b86-3d2e8c272f00
    Hi,
I'm currently having an issue with a few computers that have been updated via WSUS. It appears that the IE11 browsers are opening "New Tabs" as "New Windows" and I haven't been able to figure out a resolution as of yet.
    Computers are all Windows 7 x86, running IE11 Ver 11.0.9600.17691 / Update Ver: 11.0.17 (KB3032359)
I've tested multiple websites to make sure it's not just a website causing the problem. All websites are doing it.
I've reinstalled IE11 and even tried to 'repair' IE11 but this hasn't resolved it. No issues found.
I've uninstalled all virus/spyware protection (McAfee)
I've reset Internet Explorer 11 through 'Advanced' in options.
    I've restored advanced settings
I've checked "Tabbed Browsing Settings" and they're all set to open in a new tab, not a window.
Does anyone have any suitable solutions? trying to avoid rebuilds (though I know this fixes the issue)
    Cheers,
    Matt.
    Additional information:
Computers are on a domain network
Last time this worked fine was before the deployment of IE11 (we were on IE9)
No changes were made prior to deployment via WSUS.
Clean Boot didn't resolve my issue.
Turned off and back on via Windows Features. Didn't resolve.
SFC /ScanNow didn't find any problems.

    Hi Matty344,
"I'm currently having an issue with a few computers that have been updated via WSUS"
Do you mean all the machines share the same symptom or just part of them ?
"Last time this worked fine was before the deployment of Internet Explorer11 (we were on IE9)"
Do you mean the issue occurred after we upgrade to Internet Explorer 11 from Internet Explorer9 or it worked correctly until last updates ?
How did you get the Internet Explorer 11 installation package ?Is the Internet Explorer 11 a customed package ?
Have you configured any group policy of Internet Explorer in the domain ?
Compare you symptom with this link:
Links open in new windows instead of new tabs in Internet Explorer 11 or Internet Explorer 10
    http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2937063
If the issue persists ,please take the following steps to have a troubleshoot .
1.Run "iexplore.exe -extoff" to open the Internet Explorer 11 without add-ons to have a check.
2.If the issue occurred after we upgrade the Internet Explorer ,manually check for updates of the machine to get all the latest updates of the machine .
3.Remove the machine out of the domain then restart to have a check .If the issue persists, download the installation again from the following link ,run the following command line to uninstall the Internet Explorer 11 then restart the machine ,install the Internet
Explorer 11 to have a check.
    "FORFILES /P %WINDIR%\servicing\Packages /M Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-*11.*.mum /c "cmd /c echo Uninstalling package @fname && start /w pkgmgr /up:@fname /quiet /norestart"

  • How can I get a query in the search field to open in a new tab or new window from the current window?

How can I get a query in the search field to open in a new tab or new window from the current window?

If you are searching via the Search Bar on the Navigation Toolbar, this preference can be changed to have searches there open in a Tab.
Type '''about:config''' in the Address Bar and hit Enter. Then answer "I'll be careful". Type this pref in the Search at the top.
    '''browser.search.openintab''' = double-click to toggle to '''true'''

  • I am running 3.6.12 and my new tab and/or window actions are the same. How can i open new links within apps into new tabs?

I used to be able to control new tab actions such as opening on top of current tab or in a new tab. This is frustrating as i always cover up where I am or was! How can this be corrected so I can open a new tab in a new tab? I am enrolled in an on-line class and can not open tabs in a new tab as needed as it always places the new tab on top of teh current or old tab.
Funny as i use to complain about opening in new windows!
I am missing how to control new tabs and new window actions?
    THanks,
