Open in new tab when dragging url in address bar

Hi,
when using Firefox on a Windows system, i can get a url (not hyperlink) opened in a new tab by dragging it to the address bar while holding Alt key on the keyboard.
Now I'm using Firefox (last version) on a Linux system (Linux Mint 14, precisely) but I can't do the same; is there any solution to reproduct this behaviour?
Thanks in advance

Does it work if you press the Return key afterwards? That is what I have to do with a Mac, anyway.

  • Upon opening a new tab, it auto selects the address bar. Also when closing firefox, you must wait 5 seconds before re-opening or you get an error saying it's already open but not responding. Please help!

    Please help with this annoying problem - the firefox main start page that runs off google accel. should set it to the dialog box to search so you can begin typing A.S.A.P
    Same with other websites like bing and google.

    Try to wait a bit longer before reopening Firefox to give Firefox more time to close completely.
    Try to use "Firefox/File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit") to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the title bar.

  • QT Turn OFF Autoplay when video is open in new tab (CMD-CLICK url to open)

    Seems to me that what ever builds the HTML for the video by itself in the new tab window has turned on autoplay. I need to turn this. I have figured out how to get WMV files to stop playing automatically, but MOV files still do. I open 20 to 30 links a day for my job and having 10 things playing at the same time drives me crazy and then I have to rewind everything. On 10.5.8 I use Multi-safari 3.2.1 and do not have this problem. I can not use Safari 4 on 10.5.8 and have had to downgrade from 10.6.2 because of this.
    My theory is that maybe the HTML that is rendered is stored in WebKit and we should be able to get "Open in new tab" videos to be set with autoplay to FALSE.
    Let me know if you have any questions / solutions.
    PS ClickToFlash has nothing to do with this issue so do not mention it.
    I have demo videos sent to an Apple Engineer that details the issue.

    Here is more info to describe the issue.
    These are the movies sent to the Apple Engineers to show how our
    workflow has worked for 7 years until Safari 4 came out.
    Again this has caused us to go back to 10.5.8 though we enjoyed some of Snow Leopards improvements.
    Have your sound on when listening to safari4 so you can hear the overlaps.

  • How do I get Firefox's home page to open a new tab when searching?

    I'm slightly modifying Firefox's about:home page, and I'm trying to get the home page to effectively be its own app tab. In order to do that, I need to make it so that when I search with it, it opens a new tab to view my search results.
    I've tried two things so far; I've tried adding the attribute '''target="_blank"''' to the '''<form>''' tag, and I've tried adding the attribute '''onclick="this.form.target='_blank';return true;"''' to the '''<input>''' tag nested inside of the '''<form>''' tag (I'm guessing the latter is JavaScript lol). I also tried an extension "TabSubmit" which didn't work here.
    I know how to edit the right page (I'm changing the contents of aboutHome.xhtml in omni.ja), and have already edited the stylesheet slightly (to underline links when hovering over them and adjusting the fading of Mozilla's logo when hovering over it). This is the next change I wanted to make.
    Any suggestions? Thanks!

    The about:home uses window.location.href = url; to change the location of the current tab.
    Changing this to window.open(url); and adding a line at the end of the aboutHome.js file to initialize localStorage works for me with a locally saved about:home page.
    <pre><nowiki>function onSearchSubmit(aEvent)
    let searchTerms = document.getElementById("searchText").value;
    if (gSearchEngine && searchTerms.length > 0) {
    const SEARCH_TOKENS = {
    "_searchTerms_": encodeURIComponent(searchTerms)
    let url = gSearchEngine.searchUrl;
    for (let key in SEARCH_TOKENS) {
    url = url.replace(key, SEARCH_TOKENS[key]);
    window.open(url);
    aEvent.preventDefault();
    localStorage["search-engine"]="{\"name\":\"Google\",\"searchUrl\":\"http://www.google.com/search?q=_searchTerms_&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a\"}";</nowiki></pre>

  • Why does Yahoo Search appear when I open a new tab, when Google is my default homepage?

    Ever since I upgraded to 4.0, when I open a new tab the yahoo search page appears, but my homepage is www.google.com.
    I have three tabs open at all times on my main foxfire window and always ask to restore them: Yahoo mail (my account), www.imdb.com, and http://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/. Anytime I open a new tab http://search.yahoo.com/?fr=freeze&type=W3i_NA,132,3_6,Tab%20Search,20110104,6894,0,16,0 appears, but my default homepage is set to www.google.com.
    Interestingly, when I open a new window for firefox my default homepage of www.google.com appears, but http://search.yahoo.com/?fr=freeze&type=W3i_NA,132,3_6,Tab%20Search,20110104,6894,0,16,0 appears when I open new tabs.
    Why????
    Very annoying, but the highest of priorities.

    I have tried looking through all the setting that it gave me and i can not find when it wont let me open a new tab. All the settings i have are the default settings and before it happened i hadn't even been into the setting so its not like i was messing with them and then it messed up it just happened one time. I do not have any viruses or anything because i use 3 different virus scans and they say my computer its clean. Also my virus scanning programs are up to date i updated them today.

  • After opening a new tab, when I click on my home page (the house icon), it duplicates and opens a second window...it's never done this before?

    I just installed Firefox on a new laptop. Google is my home page. My opening tab is always Google. But, when I open a New Tab, it doesn't open in Google. So, I've always clicked on the house icon to take me straight to Google. Now when I do, TWO tabs open in Google. (it duplicates)

    I tried all of the above, I've reinstalled Firefox and I've checked if value set to 3 in browser.link.open_newwindow which it is, but the problem still happens.
    Regarding what you say re what is written in the article Tab preferences and settings, I understand what this means. However I am using FireFox in my work. I have a CRM where I constantly click on a button that automatically opens my order system on a new tab, or email templates in a new tab etc. The tab opens next to the tab I am currently on. However ever since I was prompted to Refresh Firefox earlier, it now opens these in a new window. Therefore the size of these pages has nothing to do with it, as this was not a problem before.
    This is irritating, as no I have to go from one window to another, and where I have multiple tabs open it is making my life difficult.
    Not happy!

  • How do I change firefox to open a new window when I start it several times instead of opening a new tab when I want to go to a different location?

    I want to go to several different websites at the same time. I want to compare the information on each site. I do not want to open a tab, I want a whole new window. How do I change firefox so it will open a new window instead of opening a new tab and then requesting the site I want to go to?

    In Windows XP I am able to right click a link and get an option to open it as a new Firefox window
    *'''tear off tabs'''
    You will probably note tabs can be dragged along the tab toolbar, they also tear off. You can click a tab and drag it off the browser onto the Windows Desktop where it will open as a new window, or drag it on to another open browser window.
    An alternative is to click the tab and drag it down, again it will then open in a new Window.

  • I cannot open a new tab when I click on the + to add a new tab so I can't have multiple tabs open. How do I fix this problem?

    On my home page, I have it up and I want to open a new tab. When I click to open a new tab, nothing happens. How can this be fixed?

    Hello lsmalls787, '''try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode|Firefox Safe Mode]] is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings, disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).
    If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
    *In Firefox 29.0 and above, click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]], click Help [[Image:Help-29]] and select ''Restart with Add-ons Disabled''.
    If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
    * On Windows: Hold the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".<br>
    [[Image:Safe Mode Fx 15 - Win]]
    '''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]] article to find the cause.
    ''To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''

  • I cannot open a new tab - when I restart firefox (or my computer), ctrl T does not work, and the "+" tab next to the single tab on my browser window does NOT open a second tab

    Firefox3.6.18, running on WinXP (all the Microsoft patches), opens with a single tab. Clicking the Add Tab "+" or pressing CTRL T does not open a new tab, although I can open a new window. Also, when exiting from Firefox, my tab location is not saved.

    Please disable or uninstall the Ask toolbar extension to solve your problem. It has a known incompatibility with Firefox. See [[Uninstalling add-ons]].

  • How am I supposed to open a new tab when the "+" icon has been removed?

  • When opening new tab, text placement defaults to address bar, any way to change it to the new page (like Google)?

    When I click on the plus for a new tab, which automatically takes me to google.com so fine, but the cursor is in the address bar. It looks like the cursor is in the google search field, but it isn't.
    When I click "home" the cursor defaults to the search field, which I feel is proper. Is there a way to have FF not default to the address bar for text input when opening a new tab?

    I doubt it. Google controls both their search and their browser and they integrate the features. But you can use "Ctrl+K" to place your cursor on Search Bar" within your Firefox toolbars. Pressing the TAB key is pretty much a waste of time since there are a lot of links before you get to the input area.
    There might be an extension, if it bothers others, but I can't see a valid trade-off to justify using an extension for something that seems trivial to me.

  • Is there some way to keep Safari from opening a new tab when clicking on a link?

    When one clicks on a link on a page in Safari a new tab is opened. This is fine if the link is to a different site. However, it is annoying when navigating through the pages of a single site such as is required, for example, in on-line banking. Firefox seems to be smarter in this regard, opening a tew tab in the former case but not in the latter. Is there some way to keep Safari from opening a new tab each time?

    Safari Preferences > Tabs (in Safari 7)
    There is an option there for specifying how new pages open
