Open .indd layout files in InCopy, different extension possible?

Hey,
I'm trying to open InDesign layout files in InCopy, so I can edit the incx/icml files. The layout is opened by another application, which runs the default application, and for .indd thats InDesign and not InCopy. Inca files are not available.
Is it possible to change the extension .indd to something else, so it will open in InCopy?
When I rename the file to .inca it seems to work fine, but maybe I'm wrong/missing something. The layout will be removed afterwards, so if InCopy breaks it, it's OK.

I have created an InCopy package file from InDesign CS3 (Mac). I am able to open this package file in InCopy CS3 (Mac) without error. However, two editors working in InCopy CS4 (Windows) on different machines receive the following error message when trying to open the .incp file:
"An error has occurred opening the package file"
I have read AnneMarie's excellent cautionary tales about working in a mixed CS3 / CS4 environment, but my understanding was that simply opening the initial .incp file was unlikely to produce an error.
Can anyone suggest what might be causing the error? Should we conclude that the error stems solely from a CS3 / CS4 conflict?

Great tip about the masked filetype, I hadn't realized these packages were so easily extractable.
However, the error message you're receiving is adding a new layer of complexity. A quick search on these forums reveals this thread:

That thread suggests to me that the error may be related to Snow Leopard. We're using Mac OS 10.5.7 here at work. Could I trouble you to open the file on your Windows machine to attempt to replicate the same error we're receiving in Windows here?
And are there any known issues that could prevent a user from opening a package file?

Can my editor open an indb file in InCopy CS4?

I think the answer is no, although I'm not sure why. It would be great if my editor could open my indb file in InCopy CS4 rather than opening all indd files - but it doesn't appear possible. Is it?

The default text editor in windows is usually notepad so you should be able to do this:
Runtime.exec("notepad.exe myfile.xml");
FWIW, if you use the same technique as to open the default browser, it will probably open the xml file in IE since this is the usual default registration.

I haven't seen a solution to this, but the question has been posed.
I was sent a hard drive with media to edit. I had to change the file extension of all the clips (long story). The clips however, are named the same.
I'm working with a director in another state who has the same clips I had to change the file extension to. He has edited a rough cut using the the QT clips and sent me the PP Project. I'm trying to re-link the clips, which total 350. I can manually re-link these to my clips with the different extension....which is a pain. I would like to batch link these. Is there any way to do this?
We are both working in CC2014 v8.1
I'm in Windows, he's on a Mac, which is no problem as we've worked on films like this before.
Also, the reason I had to change the ext is a ling story. I just need to know if batch re-linking is possible with a different ext.

I received the footage which was encoded using a tricaster. I was given a hard drive which contained these files and a PP Project, all having a Quciktime wrapper. When I tried to open the project and link the media, I kept getting a "file import failure", error message "codec missing or unavailable". However my colleague is able to open them. I'm on a pc, he's on a Mac. I've never had any issues importing media. When I checked the codec on the clips, it says xd54. I researched and it was shown as XD Cam codec, which I've never had a problem with. I researched and found that it might be a proprietary Avid or FCP version. I was unable to open any of them in QT Pro (up to date), but was able to open them in Media Player Classic. This lead me to believe that there was something wrong with the wrapper and the codec. I started thinking about it and changed the file extension on a clip to .mp4 and was able to import it. I dup'd the folder and batched changed the file extension of all the clips.
I downloaded a trial version of a Calibrated XD Cam Decode which worked on the QT clips but left a watermark and cost $150, out of my budget for this film.
I read somewhere that PP doesn't understand a Quicktime wrapper using that codec, as it isn't normal to have that. I have a Sony EX3 Cam which encodes as .mp4's and also use the Sony FS100 which encodes as .mxf's. XDcam is a Sony codec.
IDK...I'm trying to understand all this myself. That's why I was hoping to re-link with a different extension as it took forever to re-link these clips. I will be sent another project ile using those same QT's that don't work.

Opening the same file in by different users

As a newbie to InDesign I got a workflow question.
Working with a team of 6 designers, we would like all to work in the same InDesign document. We need to create a big salebooks book, therefore it is necessary to open the same file in different copy of indesign?
Currently we are working with CS5 and when I have a indd file open, none of my coworkers are able to open the file except for a copy. I understand that really working together on the same file is something you could do. But can’t be like in MS-Office? The moment you open a indd file which is already opened by a other user, you will get a message and you can then either to open as read only or a notification when the other user is ready editing the file

I would actually be surprised if there are no workflow management plugins that do this.
As you imply, it's really not that hard to do.
Making it look really slick would probably require a plugin.
But you could do it fairly easily with some simple scripting, a few hours of work.
One script that runs whenever anyone opens or closes a file and registers that open/closure with a server.
Plus some extra stuff to deal with messaging.

I am trying to open a .mxf files from 2 different Panasonic cameras in After effects CS3

I am trying to open .mxf files from 2 different Panasonic cameras (the HVX 200A and the HPX 170) in Adobe After Effects CS3. I have down loaded all of the Adobe CS3 upgrades and I have also installed the P2 card reader for Tiger which is the operating system on my mac. I have not been able to open these files. Can anyone help pls?

Opening ipod mp3 files on a different computer?

My friend brought over his ipod to show me. We hooked it up to my mac to check out what would happen if I wanted to copy his stuff to my itunes library. Just got a mesage asking if I wanted to replace the stuff in his library with the stuff in my library. Nothing happened. Tried to open up the files in the ipod on the desktop icon and there was nothing in there. BUT. Hooked the ipod up to my windows pc and I could open and play the song files and everything. What gives?

Yes, sharing copyrighted material such as music is not legal. Your friend owns a license for that content... not you. It would be illegal for both of you to have that content when only one of you paid for it.
But, why can I authorize music that I bought on itunes to be played on 5 other computer's?
You can authorize 5 of YOUR OWN computers. You can't legally authorize your friends computer to play your purchased tracks.

For yourself, yes. You can make all the backup copies you want, if you're the only one using them.

No, this is a violation of copyright law.

Opening a binary file with the right extension

Hi everyone,
I developed a real simple VI that enables me to read the first five bytes of a binary file to get its signature (ASCII) and verify if its signature matches with the expected extensions. If yes, another VI is called, and if not a 2 button message error is displayed : if the User chooses OK, then a new dialog box opens up to pick another file ; and if the user chooses Cancel, the same dialog box opens up rather than escaping the VI.
It is due to the while loop (VI below) but i don't see how I can handle this without it. Till the user hasn't chosen the right extension, it can't escape which is a problem! The true case consists in calling another VI, and the first step of the stacked sequence consists in displaying a two button error message.
If you have any ideas, I'm a bit new! Thanks !!

I have tried your solution CoqRouge, filtering the extensions. But it seems that you can choose between different filters when the dialog box opens up, and then choose any kind of extensions.

Cannot Open .indd template file

Hi,
I have some javascript code that I am porting from CS3 to CS5.
The code was working well on a Windows Server as CS3.
I have ported this to run fine on my local Mac machine on CS5.
As soon as I try to run this on a Mac Server running CS5 I get issues.
Here is the original code snippet.

document = app.open(template, true);
The file exists and template.exists is combing back as 'true'.
The error logging coming back is this:

I have tried the following code variations with the following results in red.

Like swingcarlos, I'm a bit confused what problem you're trying to solve, Jongware. He's already got a way to tell.
Though I would probably use application.hasOwnProperty("serverSettings"), but it probably doesn't matter much.
What would be nice would be an open() method with compatible type signatures on both. But it seems clear we're not going to have that.
(There's also app.serverTest(), but I don't know what that does... Ah well...)

How do I convert Mac files to a different extension?

I know how to convert a window's file extension. For example, I can change a .jpg to an .exe, if i needed too.
I want to know how to change a powerpoint 2008 file, which has a .pptx extension to a .ppt extension. How can I do that on a MAC?

First of all, it's as easy as clicking into the Title, and selecting all, or any part, and changing it. BUT, if you think you fool PowerPoint by changing the newer version to an older extension, you won't. You would be better served, maybe, to "save as", and select the older PPT version. So far, in my experience, the latest Office is terrible at these conversions, and reading older versions. Once again, leave it to MS to try to put lipstick on a pig.

If you're talking about Windows Media files (WMV, WMP, etc.) then Flip4Mac will allow most (unless they have DRM) to be played in QuickTime. VLC will also play them. There may be other solutions.

I'm opening a garageband file on a different computer than the one it was made on, and my drum loops are playing as low pitched beeps instead of the jazzy brushes I want. I believe my version is more up-to-date than what I used first. How can I fix this?

Could it be that you had more instruments on the old computer? Or haven't correctly installed the instruments on the new one?
Obviously, GB hasn't assigned a drum instrument to the track that the drum notes are on (my guess: since it doesn't have the desired drum set.) Press cmd-I to make the track info pane visible and pick one of the drum sets for that track.

Importing files with same name but different extensions

Hope I will be clear enough.
Lets say that instead of sending a file from Lightroom to an external editor, I open it directly in Photoshop.
When I'm done, I save the edited photo using the same name but in a different file format : IMG_1333.cr2 > IMG_1333.psd or IMG_1333.tif, and selecting the same folder location.
Then, I come back into Lightroom and synchronise the folder.
Why is the knew version of the picture not showing up beside the original file, despite the different extension ?
I notice that the different extensions ( .psd or .tif ) are recorded in the sidecar files field in the Metadata panel.
Of course, everything works fine if the file name is modified ( or just by selecting the "copy" option in Photoshop's "save as" dialog box ). Lightroom synchronise dialog shows the new photo to import.
So, why is Lightroom not making a difference between files with the same name but different format extensions ?

I think your problem is likely that you have the option to stack the copy with the original turned on. First, right-click on one of these photos and go to the stacking menu. If Unstack is not grayed out then you have a stack -- select Unstack to reveal all copies.
To change the automatic stacking of edited copies from Photoshop, when you next choose to edit a file, in the bottom left corner of the dialog is the check box for unstacking. Clear it, and that choice should "stick" until you change it again.

Placing Multiple Files in Incopy

I know that you can load your place curser with multiple files to place text in Indesign; however, when I have empty frames that have been exported to Incopy, check the stories out, and load up my curser, I am not able to place the text in the stories. Even if I have my curser directly over the Incopy story frame, Indesign creates a new text frame.
I also tried opening the Indesign layout file in Incopy, checked out the stories and loaded my place curser. When I try to place the text, a get the circle with slash icon meaning it can't be done.
I find it hard to believe that this feature does not work with Incopy stories. Has anyone else been able to do this? Have I set something up wrong?

A shortcut to perhaps the prolem is to go "around" the live-edit workflow and just focus on the .indd file.

IMovie '11 will no longer show project or open the project file

Upon finishing a project, I was ready to do a Share > Export Movie command, and opted first to do a restart on my computer (by first doing a File > Quit in iMovie).
Now my project no longer shows up in the projects pane!
While the import of the original footage still exists in the Event Library pane, the project is nowhere to be found in the Projects Library pane.
In addition, while the project file that sits in my iMovie Projects folder is there, it will not open!
When I option click it to open with iMovie, iMovie launches normally (displaying no messages) but does not show the project in the projects pane!
What has happened here? The iMovie Projects folder is on my internal hard drive and I have not ever moved any files around. Is there any way to get it back?
I have tried to open my project file on a different computer that is networked in the same room, but the same happens: iMovie launches normally, however the project does not appear in the the Projects Library pane.
As a test, I have created a couple new projects that I have named "Test1" and "Test2" and they indeed show up normally every time I launch iMovie or do an "open with iMovie" command from the iMovie Projects folder. But my origional project just doesn't work. Please help!
If this is of any help: my origional project comprises of a 26 minute MOV file that I have simply imported in iMovie and have added subtitles (no transitions). I had been working for two days on it, and there were 2 times early on when I had to force quit iMovie because I was getting the spinning ball - I was worried about whether the changes were saved, but each time they were indeed saved and I could access the project normally. (I had considered this was caused by a shortage of memory, so I did not think anything of it.) Since then and up to the moment of the problem, I had occasionally shut down or restarted my computer (by first doing a File > Quit in iMovie) with no problems up to now.
Looking through the forum, I have tried 1) logging in/out, 2) logging in as a visitor, 3) creating a new admin account, in addition to 4) subtracting the iMovie preferences file from the Library, but nothing has worked.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I'm running Mac OSX 10.7.5 and iMovie '11 version 9.0.8 on an iMac 27 inch, 2.8 GHz i7 with 4 GB ram.
