Open InDesign CS4 files in CS4 in Windows 7

Hi!
I want to open InDesign CS4 files in in InDesign CS4 but it opens with InDesign CS3. What can I do?
I also tried 'open with' by right clicking and select a default program but that didn't work for me. I also downloaded registry files from 'Windows 7 forum' to restore registry settings of 'open with', even that didn't work.
How can I manually change registry settings to open ID CS4 files in IDCS4?
Please help me!
I'm weird of manually dragging and droping inDesing files to inDesign program window.
Should I uninstall IDCS3 and reinstall it?
Thanks.

Did you install CS3 after CS4?
In any event, you might want to try this:

  • Opening Indesign CS2 files In CS4

    Hi everyone,
I have just started using Indesign CS4 for work but found that it is mostly a waste of time as most clients send me documents made with older versions of Indesign which i just cant open with CS4. Is there anyway around this using the standard software or are then any plugin's that will do the job for me?
    Thanks in advance,
    Loki

Hmm...very odd. I simply get the old "this
file is not compatible" error come up when ever i try to open CS2. CS3 seems ok but not tried anythng older yet. I thought it seemed a little weird not opening, I guess that who ever was doing the job before me just screwed it up some how. :/   guess i have a few hours of system cleaning tomorrow ahead of me, if anyone can think of anything they could have done to stop it working i would be greatful for the advice if nto ill just try a re-install.
No worrys about the clients not being able to reopen the file Ill be sending it strait to the presses once finished.

  • Can't open canon raw files in cs4

I recently had to rebuild my pc after a problem that stopped a few of my programs working (I'd installed xampp so I could use wordpress on the pc but it stopped cs4, firefox, video studio and a bunch of other stuff working - removal and reinstalling did no use, I had to build a new disc).
I reinstalled cs4 and got all the updates but now I find I can't open can raw files with cs4 or bridge. I tried replacing the Camera Raw.8bi file with the latest file from adobe as per their web instructions but it still doesn't work. So I tried the adobe dng convertor (version 8.3) and ran the files through that, still no luck, I can't open the files.
I could open them wwith canons own software and save as a tiff, but then I'm losing a lot of information.
I'm still running vista home premium - no I can't upgrade to windows 8.1 and use the latest photoshop and lightroom software because 8.1 doesn't work with my nikon scanner or my epson large format printer. It doesn't like a few other items I have either.
I remember I had to download a few files a couple of years ago when I first bought the pc (a whole 3 years ago) as I was having trouble with photoshop and raw files then but I can't remember the name of the file or where I got it from.
Anyone able to help? much appreciated if you can.

    Hi John,
Adobe told me to replace the relevant file, which I did. The trouble is that went I do this then 'camera raw' disappears from the 'help / plugins' list and there doesn't seem to be any way of getting back other than uninstalling and reinstalling cs4, and once I do this it overwrites the files again...
I can't remember having this trouble when I first installed it a couple of years ago but I do seem to remember having to replace a file somewhere but that may have been on an earlier version.
    I have an old EOS 5d mk1 & a 7d mk1, so it's not as though the camera is unknown to cs4.
    Regards,
    Doug

  • Open Flash CS5 file in CS4

    Hey all,
I think I know the answer to this, but ... Is there any way I can open a CS5 file in CS4? A designer I'm working with created some files using her CS5. She's on vacation for 2 weeks (so I can't have her edit or resend the files as CS4) and I just got an email that the client needs a couple tweeks and all I have is CS4. Is there any way (or any program) that can backwards convert a CS5 file?
    Thx.

If you had access to CS5 you could save as CS5 or save as CS4 (but not CS3 or below).  But opening a CS5 Flash file in Flash CS4 produces a "unexpected file type" error.

  • Paragraph style issue when opening imdl (CS5) file in CS4

Sending a CS5 file to a printer using CS4.  When they open the imdl file in CS4, it changes the paragraph style in the pull quotes. The initial character, whether a letter or a quote, appears tiny.  It looks like a paragraph style issue.  The 'quote' paragraph style in CS4 has a drop cap set on it.
Has anyone else had this problem or have a suggested fix? Certainly, we can check our files in CS4 before sending each time, but what a pain!

IDML is meant as an interchange format, and is far from "the same file but in another version".
If your printer wants a CS4 file, send them a CS4 file. Better yet, ask them why you have to send them native files anyway and what's their problem with a PDF?

  • Can't open flash/fla files (with CS4) - might be version issue

    Hi,
I am trying to edit a website for a friend (built with Flash and XML) and i can't seem to get into any of the .Fla files.
I don't know if it is my version of Flash (CS4) or the files and not sure how i could test it. Could also just be a CS5 file hence i can't open it.
Any help or suggestions would be great. Please help i don't know what to do, haha.
Here is an upload of one of the files i am talking about
    http://www.2shared.com/file/kb2NKm0i/book-verification.html
I wasn't sure which hosts were allowed so if i messed up please let me know.
    Thanks
    Asher

    Hi Asher,
You  cannot open a file which is saved in future version such as CS5  version  in Flash CS4 .This is as designed .
If you need to open a CS5 file in CS4 , You need to save the file as CS4 file  and then open in Flash CS4 .
    Thanks

How do I make a button open a swf file in a seperate window
new window (like if i opened to swf file seperately)

well you can publish the the other FLA, which would give you
an HTML file, upload that and the SWF then link to the SWFs' HTML
    page.

  • Can't Open Indesign CS6 Files In CC

How do you open indesign CS6 files in CC?

That sounds like there is no file association for .indd, and I'll bet you uninstalled CS6 or some other older version after you installed CC. If that's the case, uninstall and reinstall CC to repair the damage to common files and the file association.

  • Opening Indesign CS3 files in Indesign 2.0

Can any one assist in opening Indesign CS3 files in Indesign 2.0 please.
    Many Thanks.

That is not possible. InDesign 2.0 is four versions ago. You can use InDesign Interchange format to get back to CS2 (and if you have CS2, you can use it again to get back to CS, but that's as far as it goes).

  • Unable to Open InDesign CC files with InDesign 6

I've upraged InDesign 6 to the 8,02 level and still unable to Open INDesign CC files (which were upgraded to CC8). Is there a solution? An upgrade to IND6?

This is only an option if you actually have access to CC. I ended up installing CC on my machine along with CS6 when we started receiving CC files from our customers.  Until I did that I had to call clients and ask them to resave their files to IDML and resend them.
As far as I know there is no way to upgrade CS6 to a point that you can open CC files with it.

  • Will I be able to open InDesign CS6 files from the latest CC version?

Considering Cloud purchase and want to check compatibility. Will I be able to open InDesign CS6 files from the latest CC version? Thanks for any advice on this.

You can open files in CC from CS6 and earlier.
Due to updates to the text engines you might notice a text reflow - note that text won't reflow until it's interacted with.

  • Unable to open a CS file in CS4 After Computer Crash

    Can anyone offer any help.
I was using my computer with my indesign CS files open, when the graphics card broke on the motherboard - I now have removed the Disk Drive and have it in a cradle attached to a new computer.
Trouble is I can not open the files on my new comp on CS4 - it states "The file is already open by another user or application, the file may be stored on a network server and can not be used until the user closes it"
I have made sure that all files on the old drive are available via the security tab to the new machine - I have also made sure each individual file is able to be used by the new comp.
It seems that the file is in use and I do not know how to resolve it. I have found references to the fact the file may be locked in the preference file but I do not seem able to locate it in a satisfactory way (if thats in fact the problem)
Its probably complicated as the crash occured on the other drive not the main drive where the CS4 software is located
    Can anyone offer any advice?
    Many thanks

ACTUALLY HERE IS THE FULL PROCESS:
    Prerequisites
Log on as an administratorYou must be logged on to Windows as an administrator in order to change security permissions for a file or a folder. If the computer is your personal computer, you are likely already logged on with an administrator account. If the computer is part of a network at work, you might have to ask the system administrator for help. To verify that you are logged on to Windows with a user account that is a computer administrator, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
    http://support.microsoft.com/gp/admin
Start Windows XP Home Edition in safe modeIf you are running Windows XP Home Edition, you must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an account that has administrative rights in order to access the Security tab. Access to the Security tab is required in order to change security permission. If you are running Windows XP Professional, you do not have to start the computer in safe mode. For more information about how to start Windows XP in safe mode, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
304449  How to start the System Restore tool at a command prompt in Windows XP
Disable Simple File Sharing in Windows XP ProfessionalIf you are using Windows XP Professional, you must disable Simple File Sharing. By default, Windows XP Professional uses Simple File Sharing when it is not joined to a domain. For additional information about how to do this, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
307874  How to disable simplified sharing and set permissions on a shared folder in Windows XP
To take ownership of a file or a folder
How to take ownership of a fileYou must have ownership of a protected file in order to access it. If another user has restricted access and you are the computer administrator, you can access the file by taking ownership.
To take ownership of a file, follow these steps:
Right-click the file that you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties.
Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message (if one appears).
Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
In the Name list, click Administrator, or click the Administrators group, and then click OK.
The administrator or the administrators group now owns the file.
To change the permissions on the file that you now own, follow these steps:
    Click Add.
In the Enter the object names to select (examples) list, type the user or group account that you want to have access to the file. For example, type Administrator.
    Click OK.
In the Group or user names list, click the account that you want, and then select the check boxes of the permissions that you want to assign that user.
When you are finished assigning permissions, click OK.
You can now access the file.

  • Opening InDesign CS3 documents in CS4

I am hoping someone from Adobe can help me with this question. Here is the scenario:
I work on the support team in a prepress environment where we get hundreds of client supplied InDesign files weekly. Some clients supply their files in InDesign CS3 and some supply the files in InDesign CS4. We have both applications.
From our experience, we have found that if we open a InDesign CS3 document using InDesign CS4, there is a potential for items to disappear in the document. I don't know what changed from 3 to 4 to cause this problem. This has happened to us more than one time and we have experienced money losses due to on press errors.
One would say, as we have, if the document is supplied in InDesign CS3, work on it in InDesign CS3. Easy enough, right?
Well, not really. If you have CS3 and CS4 both installed on your mac at the same time, simply double-clicking on the file will default to CS4 (since it is newer).
We have told our operators that they need to identify what version the file was created in; which is not the easiest thing either.
If you "get info" on the file, you do not get accurate information. It may say "CS4", even if it is "CS3", I think this is because your system is reading what the newest application that you have install is.
I have found that by dragging the file over the CS3 icon in the doc, it will attempt to open the file in CS3 and if it truly is a CS4 document, you will get plugin errors and the file won't open. This works, but my 38 mac operators are so used to just double-clicking a file to open it, they sometimes forget to do it my way, and thats when we get errors.
Is there a plugin available that would prompt you, when double -clicking on a file as to what version it is, or what version InDesign that you would like to open the file in?
What did Adobe change in InDesign CS4 that would cause items to disappear or change when working on CS3 documents in CS4?
    Thank you in advance.

First, this is a user forum, not an official Adobe support site, so you aren't talking to Adobe employees for the most part.
Second, though it is subtle, there is a visible difference between the icons for file created in CS3 and CS4, but you do need to look.
There is (or perhaps it's now "was") a known issue with master items disappearing when placing one ID file into another in CS4. Be sure your copies are updated to the latest patch. Another reason to avoid opening CS3 files in CS4 is potential differences in text flow due to text engine differences which will affect how lines break.
If you want to train your people in a hurry, tell them the next time you have to re-run a job because they opened it in the wrong version you'll deduct the cost from their pay.

  • Opening CS5.5 file into CS4

The office I worked at got the InDesign 5.5 trial. In the middle of working on a docu the trial ended.
They do have the Creative Suite 4 cd, but I'm unable to open the CS5.5 file into CS4.
Changing the file to a .IMDL didn't work, but also not sure if I didn't do it right.

One of the staff members has CS5 on her laptop, so I just put the file on a flashdrive and try to open it and I got these.

  • Problems with opening Indesign CS5 document in CS4

I have the CS4  Design Premium  Academic package and am working with another graphic designer who uses CS5 - Indesign. When  trying to open her InDesign CS5 file that she exported to the CS4 format I received the following message - " cannot open brochure.indd. Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest versions or upgrade  to the latest version of Adobe InDesign. I called Adobe and they suggested to export the CS4 file to the idml format. We did that and when I opened the file many formatting features- such as no margins or grids appeared. Any suggestions - I don't want to upgrade to CS5 if I don't need to. Also, any suggestionsthe cheapest place to upgrade if I need to?

She didn't export it for CS4. If she had it wouldn't be an INDD file. She needs to export to IDML and you need to realize that this document may not look like it does in CS5.
You do need to upgrade if you want to work successfully with this other designer. Worth noting, in case you don't, is that you cannot upgrade individual components of the suite. Personally, I recommend Design Premium as the best bang for the buck.
    Here's why: http://www.theindesignguy.com/purchase-advice.shtml
You find a link a Amazon on that page, which as far as I can tell is the best place to buy with free shipping and for the most part no sales tax.
