Open Indesign CS5 In CS4

I need open an InDesign CS5 document in InDesign CS4, I am advised to export the document from CS5 as InDesign Markup Language (IDML),
then download the IDML plug-in from the Adobe website: Choose Support > Updates in the Adobe website, and go to the InDesign Downloads page.
For all my efforts I cannot find this plug-in...can anyone send me a link.
Thanks
Steve

You don't need to download a plugin. You need to update CS4 to version 6.0.5 ot 6.0.6. in order to accurately read the .idml genereated from CS5.
Don't expect an exact match. Unsupported new features from CS5, like multiple page sizes or span/split columns will be lost, and the text will probably flow a bit differntly due to differences in the type engines between versions, so there may be changes in paragraph line counts and where text breaks across columns or pages, which can result in oversets or other problems in long docs.

  • Can not open InDesign CS5 after updating to Yosemite.

I cannot open InDesign CS5 after updating my iMac to OS X Yosemite. I received an error message that said I need to install the legacy Java SE runtime.
I searched through the topics in this Forum, and followed what was recommended.
I have installed the most current legacy Java SE 8 runtime and verified that it is on my computer,
then rebooted the computer, a 2014 iMac. I have uninstalled and reinstalled InDesign CS5.
I still receive the error message that I need to install the legacy Java SE runtime. Next steps?

CS5 is NOT supported under Yosemite. Additionally, in place operating system upgrades are nothing short of a crapshoot.
Try uninstalling, running the cleaner tool and reinstalling. If that doesn’t help a clean install of the operating system is in order.
Even then you’re on your own.

  • Problems with opening Indesign CS5 document in CS4

I have the CS4  Design Premium  Academic package and am working with another graphic designer who uses CS5 - Indesign. When  trying to open her InDesign CS5 file that she exported to the CS4 format I received the following message - " cannot open brochure.indd. Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest versions or upgrade  to the latest version of Adobe InDesign. I called Adobe and they suggested to export the CS4 file to the idml format. We did that and when I opened the file many formatting features- such as no margins or grids appeared. Any suggestions - I don't want to upgrade to CS5 if I don't need to. Also, any suggestionsthe cheapest place to upgrade if I need to?

She didn't export it for CS4. If she had it wouldn't be an INDD file. She needs to export to IDML and you need to realize that this document may not look like it does in CS5.
You do need to upgrade if you want to work successfully with this other designer. Worth noting, in case you don't, is that you cannot upgrade individual components of the suite. Personally, I recommend Design Premium as the best bang for the buck.
    Here's why: http://www.theindesignguy.com/purchase-advice.shtml
You find a link a Amazon on that page, which as far as I can tell is the best place to buy with free shipping and for the most part no sales tax.

  • Freezing while opening Indesign CS5.5 files

I'm having difficulty opening CS5.5 files. I designed them in CS3. Then I got CS5.5 and opened them in that and saved them.
Every time I try to reopen them they freeze up. More specifically, if I double click a CS5.5 Indesign file, it freezes up EVERY time.
If a drag it to the Indesign CS5.5 icon in my dock, it freezes up consistently every other time--asking me if I want to postpone the recovery.
My fonts libraries and caches are clean. I've run font nuke. I've installed Suitease Fusion 3.
I was thinking that this might have to do with Helvetica Neue conflicts. My document utilizes this font.
I've tured off open fonts automatically in fontbook and Suitcase Fusion 3.
    Any ideas?

As long as there's a problem in the recovery folder you will continue to have a problem on startup. Move the contents of the Recovery folder to a new location, like the desktop, and launch ID, then try to open the files using File > Open...
Other users report problems from time to time with CS3 and CS4 files opened in CS5 (and presumably 5.5), some of which do not show up until major editing has been completed. I recommend exporting the documents from CS3 to .inx and open the .inx in CS5.5.

  • I can't open InDesign CS5 file in CS6

I created a document at work in CS5. I saved it as an INDD file and transferred it so I could work on it at home. However I have CS6 and whenever I try to open this file, my InDesign loads to about 80% and then just freezes. I can't do or click anything. It never crashes, just gets to the point where I have to ctrl+alt+dlt each time.
    I am using a Windows 7 computer.
I need to finish this for tomorrow and I don't have access to InDesign CS5 at all to make it an IDML file or fix any fonts.
    What do I do?

Try open as a copy, and/or the script at Adobe Community: InDesign 6 is crashing when attempting to open a particular document. All others are opening OK.

  • Restoring a "mini save" to OPEN InDesign cs5 file through InDesign Recivery

using time machine, can I go back to a previously OPEN (not saved) indesign cs5 file to get to the "mini save" of the file? the file was open as time machine was running (overnight)
A tech person didn't save the changes I made to the indesignfile before restarting my computer, so right now on the hard drive there is no recovery data I can use.
Looking in the time machine back-ups, It looks like there is no "cache" in the "library" in any of the time machine saves. (so there is no "InDesign Recovery" file, right?) why not? isn't time machine making an exact copy of my hard drive?

  • Scripting label in InDesign CS5 vs CS4

I have read through a few (several) of the posts and am not finding info that I understand to help me with this specific problem.
I am editing a script that was written by another person several years ago and struggling to get it to work with InDesign CS5. The error I get seems to point to this bit of code that I believe creates a list from "labeled" text boxes in my documents. These boxes are later targeted and the content of them is changed based on the user's selection. As I understand it, the method or referring to these labels has changed in CS5, but the examples I have seen are all javascript or something other than Applee Script as far as I could tell.
--create references to Pass check boxes
    try
set passTextFrames to every text frame of all page items whose label is "Pass Text Frame"
    on error
display dialog "There is no labeled box in this document. Please click on the Cancel button, then place a slug from the slug library and re-run the script." buttons {"Cancel"} default button 1
    end try
Later the code used to change the content of these frames is:
    repeat with aPassFrame in passTextFrames
set contents of paragraph 1 of aPassFrame to "SECOND PASS"
    end repeat
Thanks for any help you can offer!

    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS5"
              tell the active document

  • Opening InDesign CS5.5 doc using CS5

We are thinking of upgrading to CS5.5 for only two workstations. The other three have CS5. Will there be a problem opening a CS5.5 created doc and editing, mostly text, in CS5?

edit: Then there is NO WAY u should update!
Only the OP is in a position to make that determination based on their workflow and needs. Making that decision based on this alone would be foolish.

  • InDesign CS5 installs, CS4 doesn't

  • InDesign CS5.5 Addresses Frame Edge Highlighting and Saves Back to CS4

Two of the biggest complaints I've seen over the last year, the inability to turn off frame edge highlighting and only one version back save have have been addressed in CS5.5.
There's a new user preference to turn off the frame edge highlighting and the IDML export opens in CS5 and CS4. Technically, I guess that's only 1.5 versions but there's some hope going forward.
I've got my usual top new features article on my website: http://theindesignguy.com/cs5.5-thoughts.shtml and there's a write up at InDesign Secrets as well: http://indesignsecrets.com/indesign-cs-5-5-announced.php

    Bob:
Two of the biggest complaints I've seen over the last year, the inability to turn off frame edge highlighting and only one version back save have have been addressed in CS5.5....
the IDML export opens in CS5 and CS4. Technically, I guess that's only 1.5 versions but there's some hope going forward.
I think this is kind of an odd way of looking at it.
CS3 can't open CS5's interchange format not because Adobe tried to break compatibility, but because in CS4 a decision was made to revamp the interchange format (from INX to IDML, which is a much better file format), and CS3 could never read IDML. Yeah, there was a decision made not to support writing to INX in CS5, but that's fallout from other decisions.
It's not as if CS5 strips out CS5-specific information when writing to IDML, nor will CS5.5 strip out CS5.5-specific info when writing to IDML. (I don't have CS5.5, but I can 98% guarantee you that's the case). The interchange format is designed to be read by the version it was written in and give you the same document (otherwise roundtripping through IDML to fix corruption would fail, as would exporting to IDML to get the data into external XML tools). It's also hoped that older versions will be able to read it and to safely disregard unknown features.
We should expect that if IDML is truly a future-proof format, as was hoped for, then CS6, CS7, and CS8 (if we get there before Quark comes back!) will all write IDML files that CS4 will theoretically be able to read (wth lower and lower fidelity).
So it's a bit weird to give credit to CS5.5 for being able to write IDML files readable in CS4. That's an outcome from reasonable architectural design decisions made in CS4...

  • Indesign CS4 and Indesign CS5 on new imac TOGETHER!

    Hi,
I am purchasing a brand new imac (27in., quad core i5) which comes with the Apple Snow Leopard OS.
I am also purchasing the CS5 master collection.
A company that I freelance for is still using CS4 and wants me to create print layouts for them with indesign CS4 (they don't trust the .inx route).
Will I be able to run the entire CS5 master collection AND just indesign CS4 on my new imac?
Are there any issues or difficulties that I should be aware of?
    Thanks!!!

Yes, you will be able to, but make sure you install CS4 first, get that going how you want it, (i.e. at least make sure it's working!) and then install CS5.  If you ever have to uninstall and reinstall CS4 you're in for a bit of fun unfortunately, the only clean way to do it would be to uninstall the whole Master collection first... Having said that heaps of people do exactly what you're describing with no problems.
On thing to be aware of is that once you have installed CS5 all your CS4 Indesign files will automatically open in CS5 not CS4.  You will not be warned about this until you have worked on it (Murphys law states that this will be for a long time) and go to save, upon which it will ask you for a new save location. The icons are slightly different so you could rely on that to alert you, and just use File > Open from CS4 or drag the files into CS4, or you could look at Soxy, which is a far more elegant solution, but IMHO is still not perfect, although apparently it's better on a Mac than on Windows.

  • InDesign CS5.5 won't open in OS X 10.10

I just installed Yosemite and hadn't had any troubles with anything until I tried to open InDesign CS5.5. It keeps telling me, "To open “Adobe InDesign CS5.5.app” you need to install the legacy Java SE 6 runtime." I've searched for Java SE 6 and cannot find a way to download it. I downloaded Java 8, but the program is still not opening and I still get the warning dialog. I have work I need to get done and cannot work on till this is fixed. Any help is appreciated.

  • InDesign CS5.5 freezes upon opening

As soon as i open InDesign CS5.5 on my Mac OS X 10.9.2 and try to start a document it freezes and the mouse turns into the colour wheel. It will continue to stay like that until I force quit the application. It used to happen in a trial version of InDesign CS5. I have updated my computer and reinstalled the application but it still continues to freeze. What can I do to fix it and is it an InDesign problem or a problem on my Mac?
