Open iTunes in Time Machine

Hi, how do we open up itunes in TM? I launch TM and went to applications and hit itunes. It just opens up a gray box with the itunes logo but does not open application. I also tried opening up itunes first and then launching TM like needed for iPhoto. Nothing. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks

I know what you mean - I only found this feature of iPhoto / Time Machine today. If you have iPhoto open and it is the active application, and you enter Time Machine, you're taken into a view of seeing your iPhoto contents back through time. This is really nice, so I was curious to see if it worked also with iTunes - and it doesn't - I'm just taken to the regular Finder window.
Please don't try and start iTunes from within Time Machine, if that's what you're doing.
I just tried Address Book and it works there too! Very neat - you get a Time Machine view from within Address Book. Who knows what other applications have this as a feature? I'll have a dig and find out.

  • Can't open apps in Time Machine

In June we had a great electrical storm, and my i.Mac fried. Lucky for me the Maxtor external drive was OK, so I was able to get a total backup on to my replacement iMac and I lost not one thing.(three cheers for "Time Machine").
So I then reformatted the Maxtor and hooked it up to the new iMac and turned on "Time Machine." Everything seemed to be working just fine until just recently I tried to open my Reunion genealogy program and all Time Machine would bring up was my desktop. Even when I tried to open it through Time Machine, applications, Reunion..still cant open it.
On investigation I have the same block on iTunes and iCal.(all I get is the desktop) while apps like address book and iphoto are in Time Machine just fine.......what is going on ?
Should I reformat the external drive and start again ?

I apologize for stressing the point, but, again, can I ask why you're trying to go through Time Machine to get to your Reunion files? From your first post, it sounded as though you recovered everything from your backup (presumably you used the "Recover from TM backup" option when you installed the new hard drive?)
Does Reunion run normally when you launch it from your Applications folder (forgetting about Time Machine for a minute)? If so, do you have your current Reunion data somewhere in your Documents folder (or wherever you stored it before?) If not, and you believe you still have Reunion files in your backups, you should quit Reunion itself, then go into the Finder, go to the Time Machine interface, and locate your data file. Not the Reunion application, the family data file. Then recover that from the backup.
Again, the reason you're seeing what you're seeing through Time Machine is that TM is not "aware" of most applications (ie, you can't just launch any app, go to TM and expect that app's data to appear in the interface). It works for Mail, Address Book, iPhoto and the Finder. It's the Finder you're experiencing when you're going back in Time Machine, not Reunion itself. You just happen to be looking at the Reunion icon when you do so.

  • How to restore iTunes on Time Machine

When I try to restore my lost music on iTunes with Time Machine, it tells me that iTunes cannot be modified as it is an integeral part of OS X.
There has to be some way to restore this lost music (Thank you, Onyx!) and I would appreciate your good help.

    Neil,
I have a list of iTune Libraries within Macintosh HD. None can be opened or restored via Time machine. i get the following: "The alias "iTunes Library 2013-09-26.itl" can't be opened because the original item can't be found."
    What to do?

  • IPhoto, iTunes, and Time Machine

I have a late 2009 Mac Mini running Mavericks. The Mini has a 200gb drive.  Is it better to have iPhoto, iTunes and Time Machine on an external hard drive? I understand it doesn't matter where the location is as long as you have adequate drive space. That is not what I am asking. Another words, you have a separate external drives for EACH one.  Does it make sense to have separate drives for iPhoto, iTunes and TM. All of these external drives plugged into the Mini. I am thinking of the recovery as well as if one drive crashes then you are not dead in water,
I am thinking this way because iPhoto alone can get fairly large as well as iTunes. It makes sense to me to have separate drives for each one. Anyone else have this type of setup at home?

Thanks for the response. I understand that I would need a backup of all three drives.  However, I was asking if it is better to have your iPhoto and iTunes libraries on separate drives versus using 1 large drive to hold the data. The other point, iPhoto and iTunes can get fairly large in size over time. So, do you use 1 large external drive or use 2 separate drives.  Obviously, I know that when a drive crashes, you may or may not be able to recover any data off of it. Obviously, I know that you need a backup of the drives in case of drive failure.
I would like to know if other Apple users have separate drives for iPhoto, iTunes and TM?  If so, which manufacturer are you using?

  • Time machine is not working. I get a message: You can't open the application "Time Machine" because it may be damaged or incomplete.

Time machine is not working under "Applications". I get this message: You can’t open the application “Time Machine” because it may be damaged or incomplete. What do I do?
Time machine under system preferences lets me setup time capsule. But backup fails because "Volume is in use" Help please!

It does sound like you have a corrupted install.
The volume in use error is something we see all the time.
    Look at C12 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
But I suspect you have more serious issue.
I would run a disk verify on your local OS disk. A5 in the above reference has some info.

You can't open iPhoto in Time Machine, you need to restore it first.

  • Restoring itunes using time machine

    Hi everyone,
I'm not hugely computer literate so please be gentle.
I managed to delete my ENTIRE itunes folder... apps, music, playlists, etc. Is it possible to restore itunes exactly as it was? I have a time machine back up from yesterday that would work.
So far I've managed to use TM to get all the music, apps and video back so I'm not stressed but it was basic and messy and not as organised as itunes was before I deleted everything.
So can you help? Can I restore itunes using time machine or not?

Hi, im actually in the same boat here, im in the process of re installing my OS and i want to restore Iphoto and itunes as it was. So correct me if im wrong, all i have to do is on my Mac go to this folder (<MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music )and than jump into time machine ? That would take me directly to the folder i have in view on my mac ? Once i hit restore, will this restore all my apps, songs, iphone and ipod back ups etc ? Thanks for your help all.
    Probably not.
How and why are you reinstalling OSX?
Assuming you erased your internal HD before installing OSX, your best bet is to use +Setup Assistant+ when it reboots to transfer your apps, users, and data from your backups. See #19 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If you don't do that, but set up a user account instead, that account probably won't be recognized as the same one on your backups, so you won't have permission to restore from them.

There is no way to "convert" Safari into Windows.   And very unlikely for a hacker to get into a Mac.
But, ok, your system is all messed-up somehow.
First, what version of OSX is on your Mac?  If you don't know, click the Apple icon at the upper-left of the screen and select About This Mac.  You'll see a display like this:
    We need the Version number.
Second question: do you have backups made with Time Machine (on an external HD or the like) that you want to restore, or do you want to start your Mac over fresh, the way it came from the factory?
p.s. i dont have the disc it came with , my daughter set it up for me to get started !
You may need that, depending on what version of OSX you're running, to restore the backups or start fresh.
You really should have a copy of the original disc, as there's an Apple Hardware Test on it, tailored to the hardware on that Mac. You'll need it it there's ever a problem.  If your daughter can't send it,  call AppleCare (800-275-2273),and  give them your serial number -- they can send you a replacement for a nominal fee.
Sorry, but it's late here, and I'm going to bed, but will be back tomorrow.

  • Problems with new iMac and Maverick: ITunes and Time Machine

Just upgraded from an old to new iMac, migrated my data from my old machine and installed Maverick. Couple of major problems.
    1. My iTunes library won't open. I've been into the library folders but can't work out how to get the old library to load. Decided to try a sync back from my iPhone but while the phone tells me that it has synced with my Mac, the music hasn't moved across.
    2. Time Machine doesn't work. On my old machine I was using an external Omega hard drive but when I plug it into the new Mac it isn't even showing up on the desktop. Clearly there's a connection of some sort as the disc is powering from the Mac. Prior to upgrade, I was getting messages that Time Machine couldn't be updated but I put that down to my failing elderly Mac, which kept crashing, freezing and needed replacing. Perhaps the external drive was dying too.
    Any suggestions welcome.
    Thanks,
    Mike

I dragged the installer from the install disk to my desktop and was more successful in installing problem CS2 apps. Make sure to update everything as well. Some times it takes a restart to get the finickiness out of PS.

  • Trouble with itunes and time machine

i am having trouble with my iphone and thought it may have been itunes, so i went into time machine and tried to replace my current version of itunes with the last one. Everything went fine until i got right to the end of replacing it. it said i didnt have the authorization to do that...or something along those lines... now i cant even open itunes, ill click on it and it just bounces once and thats it. can anyone help me!?

I haven't been able to back up to my FreeAgent external hard drive
The TM disk is your backup destination and I assume it is the Seagate FreeAgent disk. The source is your Mac.
Wireless. I have a Seagate FreeAgent external hard drive plugged in by USB to the mac.
You say it is connected via USB, yet your are saying backups are done wirelessly.
From Terminal, can you post the output of tmutil destinationinfo (remove any personal information as you see fit)?

  • Itunes and time machine (authorization)

    Hi all,
After a recent apple update I lost the ability to connect wirelessly to the internet. I have reverted back to an older system set-up and have rectified this problem however now I can't play any of my itunes purchases. I believe this is because I changed the username of my apple account after the latest time machine backup I made. It says I am signed into the correct account but if I try an play anything it asks me to authorize the computer again. If I put my password in at this point it opens a file and starts to play however there is no picture or sound just a grey window? I have tried the help on the apple website and it didn't help at all as I had to get the latest version of itunes which required an update of safari, quick time and the operating system (to 10.5.8) so I lost the wifi again.
    Anyone had this problem?

    A couple of things.
First I'd recommend against using WD EHD, their enclosures tend to have problems with OS X.
Next is NEVER use the TM drive for any storage than TM. If you want to store your media library on an external HD (which is a very good idea) get another EHD and dedicate it for media, including your iTune, iPhoto (or Aperture) libraries.
As far as what drives I'd recommend they would be:
    OWC Mercury Elite Pro series
    Lacie Quadra d2 series series
    G-Tech G drive series
All are of similar build quality and features. Personally I use Lacie but wouldn't hesitate with either OWC or G-Tech.

  • ITunes with Time Machine

I cannot get iTunes to work in Time Machine. Every time I have iTunes open and click on the Time machine icon on the deck a screen of my desktop pops up instead. I spoke with the "experts" at tech support and they are telling me that Time Machine will not work with iTunes. Any one out there have any suggestions or answers.

As others have said, TM is not (yet) integrated with iTunes. It will back up your iTunes Music folder, so long as you hadn't excluded it from the backups when you set up TM. To see an example where it is integrated well with an App, check out Mail or iPhoto. I don't think the lack of iTunes integration is any big deal at the moment; your music library is still backed up and safe. Integration would be helpful for recovering changes to playlists and such.

  • How to reinstall Mail and itunes from Time Machine backup

My Mac Pro is running slow and AppleCare have advised to do a clean install of 10.6.6
All my files are backed up and I have done a TM backup. I want to be able to reinstall Apple Mail with all my family email and business email accounts & emails in it and also iTunes with all music and podcasts.
Is there any way I can do this directly from a back up of Time Machine without having to reinstall the whole thing once my machine has had a clean install.
    Thanks in advance
    Matt

First, reinstall OS X as you've been instructed to do. Upon completion of the installation Startup Assistant will give you the option to restore from a TM backup or other external drive. Restore your Home folder, Applications, support files, and network preferences which should return all your files.
If you restore your old system entirely then you will have what you now have - a slow running system.
But before you perform all of the above what you might try first are these:
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc. Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Backuplist
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    iBackup
    JaBack
    Silver Keeper
    MimMac
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    ynchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup

  • Re-installing iTunes with time machine

Somehow I can't find a clear way in other forums in how to re-install iTunes and associated playlists from the time machine back-up.
I installed a 650gb hard drive and took the old 100gb drive out and erased it. I backed up everything via time machine. When I loaded a iTunes again. All the playlists, artwork, and different menus I had for the 'music' were gone?
I have tried to drag the 'iTunes" folder from time machine and put it in the "music folder' of the computer - NOTHING
Tried the restore function from time machine - NOTHING
What am I doing doing wrong or missing? How can I get my 'iTunes' the way it was before I switch hard drives? with all the playlists and artwork?
I don't understand why after loading from time machine I get a music tutorial thing and not my music?
Please help, this is just has dragged for about a month now.
    Thanks

In which order do you do all this?
What did you do to get everything back onto the new HD
Did you run Migration Assistant and pull everything off the TM backup?
No particular order. Open the the MBP took the old HD and put the new one in. Then using my external HD followed the intructions TM told me to follow to restore the HD.
    Never used Migration Assistant
Did you install the iTunes app first?
Then you should go to the Time Machine and copy /Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Music and copy the iTunes folder to the new drive.
-All know is that I copy everything that you said and even try a restore cause the other option did not work. Even by doing this I still don't have the playlists; Im even missing artwork.
The files are copied but it is in a really raw format - there is organization in the files. In other words , it is not the same iTunes that I used to have.
    Any other thoughts?

  • Restoring iTunes from Time Machine

Yesterday I did a clean install of Snow Leopard on my MBP. Now I would like to restore my iTunes library from my Time Capsule. I ensured that I did a full back up of my OS prior to the clean install. However, now when I enter Time Machine (the Star Wars interface), the backups created yesterday and before are not available. It shows the backups, but it won't let me access them. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Since you erased everything, and set up one or more new user accounts, those accounts may not be recognized as being the same as the ones on your backups. One user, even an Admin user, doesn't normally have access to a different user's files, and Time Machine enforces that on the backups as well.
Also, when you erased your MBP's disk, it got a new UUID, which is how TM and OSX keep track of drives, so it's treated as a different one. By the way, the next backup will be a full one because of that.
Try the procedure in #E3 of [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If that doesn't work, your best bet is to start over, and use +Setup Assistant+ to transfer most or all of your stuff.
